I agreeI think I need mega puncture proofness though. Are the JB tires good
in that way or would a Marathon Supreme be a better choice? I'm still hovering
at 258 and 35mm is narrow for me but on pavement they seem fine. I just had an
annoying experience with a staple and my commute is filled with all kinds of
junk on the side of the road. Do you think the Green guard Marathon is a better
tire for that than the pricey Supreme? Money really isn't a deciding factor I
just want good performance and puncture protection.

35mm is the best size (that I've found) for optimum gearing

(200#) and rode more on nice asphalt and none on gravel logging roads.

I'm tempted by the JB Greens at 33.3mm, but every mm helps in gravel.

[RBW] Re: New Foss tube? and tire?

2011-09-08 Thread Brad
This is interesting. 2 years ago I moved and my new commute takes me
through an industrial neighborhood with streets that are a mess. I
started getting 2 or 3 flats a month, sometimes late at night in the
rain. I was riding Paselas exclusively. Last year I bought a used
Quickbeam and it came with Marathon Supremes (700x40). I haven't
gotten a single flat since then. I would consider myself a Schwalb
convert, but now I wonder if it would work as well (and be slightly
cheaper) to use Foss tubes with Paselas. A Pasela tire with a Foss
tube is still slightly cheaper than Marathon Supremes, I think. And
the tube (theoretically) shouldn't wear out.

Also, the 700c/40 Supremes fit on the Quickbeam, but it's a little
tight with fenders.

close it is.

is your only concern is cost to switch back to the paselas or is it a
ride reason too?

[RBW] Goatheads - The Scourge Is Everywhere!

2011-09-08 Thread jimD
After my summer's three week stint in Eastern Washington I returned to Northern
California.

As I wrote earlier, goatheads are always a problem in the dry climate of

They seem to come in various vintages and like wine get better (worser) with
age, lurking in
nooks and crannies, waiting for the innocent cyclist.

I'd not encountered goatheads here in silicon valley and believed myself safe
from their evil presence.
Boy was I wrong! Last weekend I rode through a patch of dirt and half a mile
later my Saluki had a
flat rear tire, I fixed the rear and rode several yards further down the road,
the front went flat.
Repairing the tubes has been, in that Rapha way, epic. I've used up all my

This episode convinced me to get some 650B medium Foss tubes.

[RBW] New Rivendell Tee Shirts?

2011-09-08 Thread Peter Pesce
I think this is a great idea, though I imagine ordering a dozen or so designs
might be a duanting prospect for Riv.
I think a design for each model with the headbadge on the front (maybe the left
breast pocket location) and a drawing of the bike on the back would be
fantastic.
Maybe there is something like Cafe Press where people could order whatever they
want. I know Riv's share of the sale would be small, but it sure beats getting
stuck with inventory.

how much I tightened it.

I finally traced the problem to the fact that the square-hole washer
that sits on the frame was slightly too thick for my shifter boss. I
sanded it down a little bit with a Dremel tool, and that solved the
problem.

Trimming it every 3 minutes is annoying.  Any tips on preventing the
 slip?

we've got one last weekend to nab in stock stuff at the old levels.  And for
folks who were hoping for another chance at the Glorius-level mixte, there's
 a short run a-comin'!

However, the thing that caught my eye was item #7 - the tandem design is
 getting to that final phase:

 7. So is a super limited number of tandems. One fellow is interested. I
forget your name. If you're reading this, contact me (grant) the same way
you did last time. I'm almost finished with the design, and have a few
questions, before I can finish and getcha-a-quote.

I know that a number of folks herewith have been wistfully wishing for a
twin rider Rivendell option, and it seems like it's closer than it's been in
 a while.

So a new knothole post this morning:

We have many, could be too many projects in the works, but they're
all coming along, and none is a far-fetched super expensive long-shot.
The tandemwhich I bring up every 20 months or so, isn't exactly in
project form yet.

There's interest out there, but tandems are such a hassle, and I'm
guessing that anybody who spends more than $5,000 on a frame is going
to pretty much also want the kind of customizing that could come only
for another thousand or more. I want to do a stock, boilerplate tandem
in four sizes to fit four hypothetical typical couples. So for now,
the tandem isn't on the project list.

:(

oh well.

I guess I'll go back to plan-b.

I was hoping to be able to post tandem ride reports to this list though :)

Interesting... it also seems that Philips has a simlar, slightly brighter
battery light which looks to compete with the Ixon IQ (i.e. 4AA
rechargeables, in-situ charging). One distinguishing charactersitic is that
it uses a USB interface for charging (i.e. it comes with a wall-wart charger
but the connector at the light is USB format and it can be charged from a
USB port). I wonder how long reasonable AA batteries would last at each of
its settings, which Philips says are 80lux/20lux?

Though I'm happy with my Ixon IQ lights right now, it is nice to know that
alternatives exist and may even be better.

And, of course, a silver light would be nicer than a black one... hmmm
:)

Re: [RBW] slipping Silver shifter

2011-09-08 Thread William
The Suntour Sprint, which the Silvers copied, came in the box with two
different thicknesses of flat washer that slides onto the boss right BEFORE
you slip the shifter onto the boss. There's a 'standard' thickness one, and
an extra one that is slightly thicker. Some bosses are a hair longer, so
the stack up of the shifter assembly is a hair too short, even when
tightened completely. The slightly thicker washer corrects that.

The Silvers I assume do not come with a choice of base flat washer, so
you'll need to replace it or augment it. I'd pull off one shifter, get that
base flat washer, and find a replacement at the hardware store that matches
the inside diameter and the outside diameter and is EITHER a little thicker
(a couple tenths of a mm will be fine) or is very very thin. If you find
thicker ones, replace. If you find very thin ones, add them in.

Setup costs for screenprinting one-color shirts are minimal, but
inventory would be daunting, you're right. There are art costs
associated, of course. You don't magically get a line drawing of a
bicycle by waving your hands... unless you're an artist and wave them
very carefully, for a certain amount of time! :^)

If (any imaginary) Rivendell bike model tee shirts came out one at a
time, there'd be less of an up-front cost. And maybe more excitement
and sales at each release. I'd be more likely to buy a Roadeo tee
shirt if it was the only one on offer at the time than if I had to
choose amongst several.

Re: [RBW] Nice rides around Boonville, CA?

2011-09-08 Thread Eric Norris
I've spent a lot of time in Boonville, and have ridden in the area a lot. Here
are some thoughts:

If you're in Boonville, you basically have the choice of riding on Hwy 128
(toward either the coast or Cloverdale) or heading over the coast range
(Mountain View Road, Fish Rock Road, etc.). Riding on Hwy 128 is the easier
choice. Mt. View Rd will eventually take you to the ocean, but it would be an
epic trip--wicked steep and lacking any type of services (ditto for Fish Rock
Rd).

If you're riding on 128, the easier route (big rollers mostly) is toward the
ocean. It's about 25 miles to the coast from Boonville, and along the way
you'll ride through the Navarro Redwoods state park--very pretty. Traffic
isn't too bad, and there's a wide shoulder in most places. Go a little way up
the coast and you'll reach Albion, where there's a nice little store/deli that
makes good sandwiches.

Heading toward Cloverdale on 128 involves more hills, including some extended
8% grade sections.

Another alternative would be to ride on Hwy 128 toward the ocean, then take
Flynn Creek Rd to Comptche, and from there turn left and head for the coast.
That would be about a 60-mile round trip from Boonville. You could also head
over the mountains to Ukiah, but that involves some significant climbing and
several miles of 10-11% grade.

There are a number of wineries along 128, specializing in Pinot Noir. You can
find services in Philo (limited) and Navarro (one store that's usually open
during the day).

(toward either the coast or Cloverdale) or heading over the coast range
(Mountain View Road, Fish Rock Road, etc.). Riding on Hwy 128 is the easier
choice. Mt. View Rd will eventually take you to the ocean, but it would be
an epic trip--wicked steep and lacking any type of services (ditto for Fish
 Rock Rd).

If you're riding on 128, the easier route (big rollers mostly) is toward
the ocean. It's about 25 miles to the coast from Boonville, and along the
way you'll ride through the Navarro Redwoods state park--very pretty.
Traffic isn't too bad, and there's a wide shoulder in most places. Go a
little way up the coast and you'll reach Albion, where there's a nice little
 store/deli that makes good sandwiches.

Heading toward Cloverdale on 128 involves more hills, including some
 extended 8% grade sections.

Another alternative would be to ride on Hwy 128 toward the ocean, then take
Flynn Creek Rd to Comptche, and from there turn left and head for the coast.
That would be about a 60-mile round trip from Boonville. You could also
head over the mountains to Ukiah, but that involves some significant
climbing and several miles of 10-11% grade.

There are a number of wineries along 128, specializing in Pinot Noir. You
can find services in Philo (limited) and Navarro (one store that's usually
 open during the day).

Re: [RBW] Nice rides around Boonville, CA?

2011-09-08 Thread Eric Norris
Fish Rock is definitely on my to do list for rides in that area. A very
challenging ride would start in Boonville and head to the coast on Fish Rock,
returning by heading north on Hwy 1 to Hwy 128.

There are also some interesting roads from Ukiah to Fort Bragg. I've ridden
partway on both--Low Gap (which becomes unpaved soon after leaving town) and
Orr Springs (paved, but more climbing). I'd like to do the entire loop from
Ukiah to Fort Bragg to Boonville to Ukiah. That would be a great day's ride of
100+ miles with a fair amount of climbing and mostly in the backcountry.

[RBW] Re: Roadeo Questions

2011-09-08 Thread rperks
I will chime in since I can at least aswer a couple of your
questions. I have a 63cm Roadeo and tip the scales at 215, so YMMV.
I love mine it is great on and off the pavement, a little bit
unsettlingly compliant for rough singletrack, but it has been their
and lived to tell the tale. It is more than stout enough for me and
20lbs of stuf well distributed, but any more or concentrate the load
and its presence becomes well known. I have not ridden the other
models, but at times in the winter wonder if a Homer would have made
fenders easier, but in SoCal that is only a month or two. If you wnat
to test the waters the few Ram/Rom bikes that come across the used
market seem to be a heck of a deal.

As for the fenders and bridges: At the chain stays there is a threaded
boss on the BB casting web, you will need a 1.5 inch poly spacer and a
long bolt from the hardware store to make it work. At the brake
bridge there is only the brake hole, I use a Sheldon Fender nut here,
Short version is that Waterford built bikes may never be threaded at
the brake bridge for a fender the way we would hope and dream.

Re: [RBW] slipping Silver shifter

2011-09-08 Thread Brian Hanson
I had the same problem. After trying two sets of Silver shifters on both
bar ends and down tube mounts. I finally replaced my modernish DuraAce
front (7800) road triple derailleur with an older XT circa 1989ish. Fixed
the slipping problem, and the shifter is smooth and light. Big difference.
My observation is that the modern derailleur has a heavier spring and pulls
the shifter more. Tightening it down hard doesn't work.

What modern front derailleurs have a moderate spring tension/leverage?
