My helmet is a Bell Metro, which has a small brim which keeps a lot of the
rain off. But my main way of dealing with precipitation is to carry an
extra bandana in my pocket and give the glasses a quick wipe every few

[RBW] Re: Forward rocking vibration with long reach brakes

2013-01-26 Thread Jeremy Till
I'd say that your mechanic is kind of right in that brake shudder can be
magnified by long reach brakes, thanks to the flex inherent in the longer
brake arms, but the long arms are not necessarily the cause. Shudder is
caused by irregularities in braking force--which cause the brake pads to
stick to one part of the rim, flex the arm, and then jump back when braking
friction is reduced. The same methods which you can use to stop a
squealing or shuddering V-brake or canti brake apply here.

So the first thing I would try is making sure that your rim and brake pads
have a nice, even surface with no irregularities. Clean off your brake
tracks with some fine grit sandpaper to remove oil or other contaminants,
and then wipe them down with a clean, dry rag. Make sure your brake pads
don't have any pieces of metal or debris lodged in them, and then use a
file to remove any glaze from the pad's braking surface and give it a nice,
rough texture.

I bet that takes care of it, since many others on here use the same brakes
without issues. If it persists, maybe switching to brake shoes designed
for v-brakes, with spherical washers that allow you to adjust the toe-in of
the pad, might be in order.

On Friday, January 25, 2013 6:13:36 PM UTC-8, Tim Tetrault wrote:

Anybody have experience clearing up this forward rocking I have with my
long reach Tektros that are in the standard build for the Sam Hilborne?
When I brake sharply (or even if I don't and I'm just carrying weight I
experience this slight, singular vibration that I can feel in the
handlebar... the brakes are rocking forward a bit, and it is very
disconcerting. I took it to a mechanic I work with and he basically said
that it was something that happened with long reach brakes, v-brakes,
anything with a long arm design. I feel skeptical.

Thanks for your help- let me know if posting a pic of my current set up
would help- I gotta believe they can function better than this.

[RBW] Shake down ride of the RAM

Well aside from missing my kickstand, larger bags, and not disliking but
planning on changing handle bar tape or brake levers... The Rambouillet far

hills, good steep climbs, and better friends.

It handled turns in excess of 40mph accerating, braking and just coasting like

The weird gearing 50/38/24 on front and 11x28 on back was perfect for me.
Both the 50x11 and 24x48 got work outs on this day...:)

Re: [RBW] Shake down ride of the RAM

2013-01-26 Thread PATRICK MOORE
Very nice -- high end parts! Yours is the color of mine. I'll be using the
same pump, too. Very nice crankset!

My build has been stalled due to illness last week and two weeks of jury
duty. I'm still waiting for a few miscellaneous parts; I'm hoping to get
another tubular wheelset before too long but I have one to start with and I
think I have the required three usable tires.

Have:

Crankset: Pro 5 Vis 44/30
Pedals: Look Keo Plus
Bar: Noodle 42
Stem: Specialized Aero 8 cm
Brakes: Veloce dual pivot -- we'll see if I can get these to work.
Brake levers: Dura Ace aero pre-STI
Shifters: Dura Ace 7400 era downtube
Front der: Dura Ace, pantograph era
RD: Dura Ace 7400 era
Seatpost: Nitto Jaguar
Saddle: Flite, original issue
FW: Shimano 600 31-21 7 speed
Chain: SRAM 8 speed
Bag: probably Carradice Junior

Still need to get:

Cables and housing
Stan's -- for tubbies!

I hope that I can build it this week. The tubs will require a learning

Re: [RBW] Re: SFR Lighthouse brevet. Roll call?

2013-01-26 Thread Benz, Sunnyvale, CA
Fairly windy? A little rough?

Understatements of the year perhaps? (it's early in 2013) :)

The rollers to the Marshall store didn't end up being rollers as we had to
pedal to keep moving on the flat sections. No momentum was carried at all
from the downhills. I was crawling in my granny on 4% grades. Of course,
the same stretch going away from the Marshall store was a joy as I felt
like Cancellara. Still, if I didn't have to face headwinds for the rest of
the year, that's alright with me. The clear weather more than made up for
the pain with the fantastic view at the Lighthouse though.

on cloud cover, this is between 10 and 10 and one half hours of useful
daylight. Many starters will finish before sunset, however it is wise
to be prepared for finishing late enough to need lights. Bring lights
if you are not certain if you can complete the distance by 5 PM. It
may be prudent to assume you can’t finish a ride with the same speed you
enjoyed last summer. Winds and/or bad weather could slow you down.
Regardless you are encouraged to have lights in the event of a mishap that
delays your return. Weather conditions are highly variable along the
route with dense ground fog being possible. Lights will improve your
safety. Given cloud cover or inclement weather it may be prudent to
start the ride with lights on and reflective gear on.

[RBW] Newbaum's Tape is Great and Better Hunqapillar photos

2013-01-26 Thread James Warren

To get a bar tape that is a good match to the kidney bean color found on some
Rivendells, Newbaum's tape in maroon with one coat of CLEAR shellac hit the
mark to my standards on my Hunqapillar.

I recently put up 3 pictures of the Hunqapillar. Here I add two more without
the flash reflecting off of the bag and tires. In the following photo, you can
sort of see how the Newbaum's came out after the one coat of shellac.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/46035786@N07/8418276301/in/photostream/

I continue to ride this bike almost every day, both to work and for fun. I
can't think of anything I wouldn't do with this bike. Albatross bars VERY far
extended with a LONG stem have been good for me. I knew you had to get them
forward more, but I think on my first try a couple years ago, I didn't go far
enough. For me, none of the Nittos would be long enough for use with Albatross.
For me, Albatrosses work well with something even longer like an early 90's
mountain Ritchey. Luckily, I had that in the box. Rivendell should get Nitto to
make those again for use with the Bosco (nonBullmoose) bars. The 25.4 clamp
would be a match too!

Finally, Newbaum's tape is really nice. High quality with good adhesive on the
back: http://www.rivbike.com/product-p/gt1.htm

[RBW] Quickbeam Cockpit Change

2013-01-26 Thread Robert F. Harrison
My lovely silver 66cm Quickbeam had been sitting pretty much unused since
last October when I took delivery of my new 62cm Hunqapillar. There was
nothing wrong with it, but somehow it gets hard to get off a new bike.

But it wasn't right. I still loved the QB. I just needed a good excuse.

It finally came to me. The QB had ended up being set up with a Platrack up
front which often sported a big Wald. It was great for shopping and hauling
stuff around, but I was getting the feeling that my QB might want to run a
wee bit lighter. After all a Hunq can carry pretty much anything you can
throw at it so why have to two bikes set up more or less the same wa?

I'm a January birthday boy and after purchasing the Hunq I had a decent
amount of rebate due so I decided a cockpit change was in order for the QB.
I'd fallen in love with Albatross bars so I decided I'd move from Moustache
bars to Albas on the QB as well. I'm not giving up on the Moustache bars,
they'll be going to Hilo to replace the drops on the RB-1 I keep there. I'm
not a big drop fan so it'll mean I'll probably ride more when I'm in Hilo.

This was also a good time to replace the cables and housing on my QB. I
ordered new Albas, a new Tallux 13cm stem (big guy, 66cm QB, big stem -
it's perfect), new Shimano brake levers, and cabling to boot. I also
ordered a set of Portuguese cork grips. That meant I had to mix up a batch
of shellac. I use so little of the stuff that buying a pint isn't really a
deal as most of goes to waste after a couple of years. I find mixing up a
couple of ounces at a time from flakes a better deal - besides it's fun.

The rebuild itself was almost very smooth. I always forget my bikes are big
enough I need extra long cables to reach the rear of the bike - I had to
run out and get a tandem cable once I realized this. I also needed to
replace my front barrel adjuster - but luckily I figured this all out in
time such that I only had to make one trip to the LBS.

Everything went pretty well after that. I had no trouble and in a couple of
hours (lots of breaks) I had a brand new bike - sort of. :-) I did have to
wait for the shellac to mix so I rode for one day with some cheap rubber
grips I had laying around. Worked fine, ugly though.

Then disaster struck. When putting on one of the cork grips I managed to
break the darn thing. Luckily it was pretty clean break and I didn't lose
any material. I was bemoaning the fact that I'd have to order another set
when I realized that once they were on my bike both ends of the break would
push together and be pretty much unnoticeable. Beausage of different sort I
guess. Ultimately it turns out you can tell if you look at it up close but
I can't feel any difference and a little imperfection never really bothers
me so until they wear out completely I'm good.

I did a few good coats of shellac, let it dry and voila...time to ride.

Yesterday I went out for 20 mile jaunt after work and stopped to take some
not so great photos with my camera phone. I'll have to get out with a
decent camera at some point, but some aren't too bad at smaller sizes.
There are also a couple of shots of the bike with the ugly rubber grips,
though at larger sizes you can they blur a bit.

All in all I'm thrilled. Now I have a Hunq that can carry anything and a
relatively lighter Quickbeam.

Good stuff.

Here's a few shots of the whole deal...

2013-01-26 Thread James Warren

Well done! The next best thing to the color is the mini rack mounts, not
standard equipment on the Bleriot.

That's gonna be a nice travel bike with the slightly smaller wheels. I hope you
post photos of it built up.

Re: [RBW] Quickbeam Cockpit Change

2013-01-26 Thread René Sterental

Great story and great job! I'm also a January birthday boy and am now on
day 2 waiting to decide what to get...

I also went cockpit crazy today and decided to try the Rando Bars Jan loves
so much on the low trail Atlantis. Don't ask me why... except that I was
very curious both about the bars and about how the low trail bike would
handle with those narrower special drop bars. I put them on a 7cm Tallux
and only hooked the rear brake to have a chance to ride it a bit and try it
out. Just around the block. Tomorrow I'm going for a longer ride as it did
feel quite interesting and quite nice, although I have to ride it longer to
see what it'll do to my neck. Bars are quite higher than the saddle
though...

Your QB looks awesome! Happy belated birthday!!!

René
