[RBW] Entmoot plans?

[RBW] Re: Great Allegheny Passage: A Family Ride Report
Spectacular. They will fondly recall this trip for years to come in conversations with others. A friend who shepherded his son with a handful of his willing friends and another parent on that trip for a 13th birthday party. His son who has graduated college and works in Florida now, mentioned taking that ride again. Andy Cheatham Pittsburgh On Saturday, June 21, 2014 9:44:08 PM UTC-4, WETH wrote: (Riv content: no Riv bikes, but much Riv gear and Riv inspired bike set-ups. I really doubt this ever would have happened without the knowledge and encouragement I have received from this group. Thanks!) On Father's Day, we loaded the bikes on the car and drove three hours to Cumberland, Maryland to begin our five-day family trip on the Great Allegheny Passage (http://www.atatrail.org). Early on Monday morning the good folks at Cumberland Trail Connections ( http://www.ctcbikes.com) drove us to McKeesport, PA to begin our ride west to east. There were five of us: my wife, my 11 and 13 year old sons, and a family friend age 12. I settled on riding the trail west to east so that the climbing would be gradually spread over three days, so the last day would be a fast downhill ride, and so each day we were a bit closer to home. We also slowly increased the mileage so as not to overwhelm the youth too soon. The mileage each day worked well for our group and left the boys tired but neither exhausted nor burned out. We stayed mostly in BBs with one night in a cabin at a KOA campground. The whole trip was great. The boys asked at the end when they could do another bike trip! That makes it a success in my book. We only experienced an hour of rain, and on most days the temperature peaked around 85*F. The GAP itself is a well maintained treasure that traverses a beautiful section of the United States. Here was our trip itinerary, inspired by a tour offered by Adventure Cycling Association: http://www.adventurecycling.org/guided-tours/family-fun-tours/2014-family-fun-great-allegheny-passage/ : Sunday-Drive to Cumberland, MD - Fairfield Inn and Suites Monday-McKeesport, PA to West Newton 19 miles Lodging: http://www.brightmorning.net/ Tuesday-West Newton to Connellsville, 22 miles Lodging: http://www.campriversedge.com/cabins Wednesday -Connellsville to Confluence 31 miles Lodging: http://www.riverviewkitchenettes.com Thursday -Confluence to Meyersdale 31 miles Lodging: Gram Grams Place http://www.gramgramsplace.com Friday-Meyersdale, PA to Cumberland, MD 32 miles Lodging: Home I highly recommend all the places we stayed, except the campground outside of Connellsville. They have a pool, which I thought the boys would use more than they did. I might look into a BB in Connellsville if planning this again. The campground was fine, but it was located 3 miles outside town. Being in town would have worked better for us, and we wouldn't have needed the sleeping bags. If you wanted to camp each night, the Adventure Cycling itinerary (link above) would work well, as would the KOA campground. Finally, I took immense pride in watching my family make the trip on bikes that I had built-up from just frames. A feat I could not have done without this group. So many, many thanks! This group is a treasure, too. Photos from the trip are here: https://www.flickr.com/photos/86975051@N08/sets/72157644880466610/ Here is a photo of the boys indicating our progress on the elevation map inside the tunnel at the Eastern Continental Divide. The last 20 miles from the divide to Cumberland were all downhill and a fun reward for a few days of gradual climbing. https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-_p2Dy2h8VRc/U6YyBAH2AbI/AQY/3LpU91d1REc/s1600/14289825107_daf046b408_o.jpg -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Friday Morning Adventure
http://dr2dc.blogspot.com/2014/06/friday-morning-adventure.html My most ambitious pre-work ride to date,~40 miles up to Great Falls MD on the CO Towpath for coffee outside and then to work! The 0400 wake up was unpleasant but justified. And amazingly I found a partner for this hairbrained ride in my friend Joe. We met in Georgetown at the trailhead of the CO/Capitol Crescent Trail at 0500 and had a thrilling early morning ride along the canal. Lots of wildlife including a 3 point buck so close I could have tweaked his nose (not recommended) and many, many Great Blue Heron out for a morning snack and glide along the canal basin. Anyone in the Mid Atlantic area who hasn't taken advantage of the CO and particularly Great Falls should put this spectacular place on their short list. A mere 13 miles from downtown DC and you get a world class view! Riv Content; The green Saluki performed flawlessly, I am loving the noodle bars after two weeks of riding with this setup. My coffee kit was contained in my Shopsack medium in Wald 137 basket and my work clothes in my Carradice longflap. This was my best opportunity to date to use the BM Cyo Premium headlight in its new mounting location (see picture) and it worked out great. Joe said he thought I was a car when I pulled into Georgetown! The offcenter mounting isn't perfect but I love how protected the light now is in comparison to its centerline, frontmost status on the bike previously. The GB Hetres (extra legre) continue to be my favorite tires ever, the CO towpath surface is often critisized but I found it to be just fine and largely dry on Friday. Joe's bike is his sweet UBI-built steel, fillet brazed machine nicknamed 'Frankie'. He had it clear powdercoated and we put a 10 speed 105 group on it, he's been riding it as his daily commuter for about a month or two now. He is fairly resistant to the fat tired, upright riding mantra but this bike is pretty upright and at least has 32mm tires and will be getting fenders soon. All around great ride, amazing view and good company. Over the last two weeks I've put in more miles than in any other two consecutive weeks to date, I definitely feel like I've been riding more. More the weather than anything else but I'm feeling stronger and stronger as a rider and looking forward to many more adventures this summer! https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-nf6pCPx6uYA/U6bEoratCaI/EZE/Ez9Fzv531Uc/s1600/DSC_3866.jpg -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: Atlantis/Hilsen owners
I completely see the logic behind selling the Hunq and picking up a faster road bike. I went a similar route with my Hillborne and Roadeo. I think you will feel a difference with just the frame change. The Atlantis is stiffer than the Hilsen, and also heavier. All in all, the Hilsen should feel a bit quicker given you have it fit properly and set up for faster road riding. I am convinced that one of the things that makes my Roadeo feel faster (and it is faster) than my Hillborne is the wheel change I did when I built it up. I went for a set of road wheels that are not really Riv approved, they weigh 1525 grams for the set and I put 32mm Compass Stampede Pass tires on them. I do believe that change to a standard build like what is on my Hillborne accounts for much of the speed difference that I'm seeing. On Friday, June 20, 2014 12:54:42 PM UTC-5, Bill Fulford wrote: I own an Atlantis and a Hunqapillar. I have them set up differently. I'm thinking of selling the Hunqapillar and getting a Hilsen. The Atlantis is a great bike, my favorite but seems a bit sluggish on quicker road rides. My goal is to get a quicker ride, not racing. So, in a round about way here is my question, if I set up an Atlantis and Hilsen with similar wheels, tires etc, am I really going to feel a difference in quickness, speed etc. between the Atlantis and Hilsen frames?Any thoughts would be appreciated. [RBW] Grand Bois Cypres tires, a review.
I got back yesterday from Sierra to the Sea, a 586 mile supported bike tour from Lake Tahoe to San Francisco. I used the Grand Bois Cypres tires. I now want to report that they were splendid. We encountered some roads with terrible pavement, as I knew we would since this was my second year on the trip. The tires are marked for 75-95 psi, so I initially tried 80 psi. After a day, I let out some air; around 60 psi ended up working well for me. Others would slow down on the bumpy downhills, but I just zoomed. My buddy with narrow tires was constantly crowing about how great his tires were. When I followed him on some bad stretches of pavement on the flats, I grew tired of his weaving around trying to find a good line, whereas I just rode straight with no trouble. No flats, no problems. I still think that there ought to be a standard way to measure bike tire width, so we can compare tires from different vendors. But these tires (which still measure 30mm wide on my bike) performed admirably. -- -- Anne Paulson It isn't a contest. [RBW] Re: Grand Bois Cypres tires, a review.
I think a lot of bike parts hype is mostly just hype. And I prefer the scientific to mere annecdotal evidence. I have no real science on MY Cerfs and my Cypre tires. I don't even have a very good imagination. But I swear these 2 sets of tires have made their corresponding bikes so much more fun to ride. I rode my Cerf shodded Curtlo coupled bike yesterday. 35 miles, 3500 feet, up down and and all around fast curves, crappy pavement. Love the tires a lot. Cerfs at approx 60 psi, me at 195 lbs. [RBW] FS Bagman 2 QR Support Sport
Hey Riv Folk, I purchased the wrong support for my Camper Long Flap so I had to buy the correct one. So I need to unload this one. It is meant to support these bags: For use with Barley, Junior, Pendle, Lowsaddle Longflap and Super C Audax saddlebags. Maximum load - 10kg or other similar bags from other manufactures. How about $65 plus what ever shipping costs. Please contact off list. Note: I'm leaving for the Great North Woods on the 24th for three weeks. Theoretically if one was in a hurry I could ship on Monday with Paypal confirmation or ship from my temporary home for the next few weeks. Another option: I'll be at the Riv West Jamboree and a physical hand off could occur. One other thing I did cut the support stays so if your riding a 67cm they probably won't reach. https://www.benscycle.com/p-17-carradice-bagman-2-qr-support-sport.aspx http://www.carradice.co.uk/index.php?page_id=categorycategory_id=51 Cheers, ~Hugh https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-CISF0999bYo/U6czmdtnWRI/A-4/JngY4OewdYA/s1600/Bagman+I.jpg https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-H7afk4GbiJU/U6czrNXQK-I/A_A/3KSia6eu5W0/s1600/Bagman+II.jpg https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-pgnFeRc_tCo/U6czv_DNu6I/A_I/66wb166Dzto/s1600/Bagman+III.jpg https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-vA9RaqcfoGg/U6c0_p0tcdI/A_U/n3PYdsDa3Ic/s1600/Bagman+Stay+cut.jpg -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Anne - I think the route along the water is very scenic (especially for someone who spent the first 33 years of his life landlocked). SF to tiburon/paradise loop is the first ride I did when I moved to california a few years ago and still one of my favorites for a nice casual ride especially with visitors, but you are right in that it can be a pretty crappy ride with all the foot/bike/tourist traffic along the embaradero, gg bridge, and sausalito portions, especially during the summer (I guess I've lived here long enough to turn a little sour on that ride too). I don't know what it is like after the mill valley area, so I'm assuming that is the suburban part you are referring to, but no matter what you will have to bike through that to get to China Camp unless I am missing something. Re: [RBW] Re: RBW 20th Anniversary Gathering and Entmoot -- SF Bay edition
I'm going to take the ferry, but if you like the direct bike route, you should do it. I rode from Point Reyes Station to SF yesterday, seeing dozens of riders along the bike path north of Sausalito. I continue not to like the part after the downhill from Mt. Tam, but that's just my opinion. ( I love Bofax and Ridgecrest). Chacun a son gout. I prefer friction. Maybe because it's what I cut my teeth on but to me it's simple, feels good and the end results are the same. Joes spot on on this, the Riv shifters are smoth. Ratchet or not, I'll take friction. But that's just me. On Saturday, June 21, 2014 11:58:51 AM UTC-5, Tim wrote: I've been fighting with the shifting on my Hilsen for months now. I have a 3x9 Ultegra drive train with Dura Ace bar end shifters. I'm admittedly not the best mechanic in the world but I built up my girlfriend's Sam and it shifted just fine, even after switching out Mustache bars w/bar ends to Albatross w/thumbies. I built my Hunqapillar up with less than stellar shifting. So last spring I put on a new chain, cassette, chain rings, and cables. It's never really been great since. It slipped and skipped, especially in the lower gears (which, of course, made it really inconvenient when climbing steep stuff.) I changed cables again recently with the same middling results. It wasn't unrideable but it was pretty annoying. I have my first 400k coming up next Saturday, so last night I started from scratch. I loosened the rear derailer cable (the front has always been fine) and used Sheldon Brown's method of setting up on the third smallest cog and getting the cable snug, with both barrel adjusters one full turn back from all the way tightened. I went on a 75 mile, hilly route today with similar results. It was a wee bit better but it still jumped around, mostly in the lowest gears on both the middle and small chainrings. I tried going both ways with the barrel adjusters to no avail. I would shift a notch but still have to try and trim a half notch or so to get it right. So finally I stopped and took the shifter out of index mode and into friction mode. Viola! It shifted like butter! What a wonderful relief. I had tried index mode once before but only briefly. This time it is great. I'm not sure if the indexing is wearing out on the shifter or what. I would tend to suspect my not so great mechanic ability, but the great thing is, it doesn't matter. I loved the friction shifting. I think I may never go back. This is one more thing that Grant is right about. FWIW, after using Simplex Retrofrictions on the new 9 speed Dura Ace 74XX drivetrain on the Ram for a couple of months, and after having used Silvers (bar end) for several years on the Fargo, both 7 and, for 18 months or so, 9, I have to agree that I find the Silvers more precise and easier to use with 9 speeds. [RBW] FS: Sackville Slickersack Green/Olive
Very good used condition with some minor scuffs on the bottom and back leather panel where it makes contact with the rack. Barely used. One of the nylon D-ring fasteners for the shoulder strap failed. Happy to post a picture. If you are handy with a needle and thread, this is easily fixable. Asking 130. I'd like to sell it locally (Berkeley, CA) but happy to ship it. DM me. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. No. I sold the platrack on this list about a year ago. However, I did just receive my new Clem rack and installed it today ...so far so good . I have to agree that I find the Silvers more precise and easier to use with 9 speeds. That may explain our different experiences. The largest rear cluster I've ever had is 7. [RBW] Re: Grand Bois Cypres tires, a review.
Just curious, what size are your Cerfs? I have 700x28s on my Riv Roadeo and am very happy with them. But, I have been running 75lbs front and 85lbs rear. I am lighter and wonder if I could ride with a little less pressure. On Sunday, June 22, 2014 10:30:19 AM UTC-7, eflayer wrote: I think a lot of bike parts hype is mostly just hype. I rode my Cerf shodded Curtlo coupled bike yesterday. 35 miles, 3500 feet, up down and and all around fast curves, crappy pavement. Love the tires a lot. Cerfs at approx 60 psi, me at 195 lbs. Re: [RBW] Re: RBW 20th Anniversary Gathering and Entmoot -- SF Bay edition
Jim: Thanks. I'll be following developments. After my last post, I went onto the website. The map shows several parking lots and advises that for the tent camping only area you may have to transport your gear up to 300 years from your car. I figured just clip on my bags pedal on in after ditching the car. Also, there looks to be the Shoreline Trail paralleling the main road thru the park. So the adventure can start immediately. The website says check-in after 2 PM. IME people leaving a campsite tend to go early so perhaps we can access the campsites mid-day-ish. [RBW] Riv Owner Qualifications
I've been wondering lately, what percentage of my bike needs to originate at Rivendell to qualify as a real RBW Owner? Obviously, a frame will do the trick, but that's something I don't have have, and probably won't anytime real soon. Meanwhile, just about every other part of my bike was bought from Rivendell. Tires, saddle, bar, grips, bar end Silvers, brakes, fenders, double legger kickstand, multiple straps, a Saddlesack, and many of my favorite wardrobe items. Bar tape and one or two accessories weren't ordered from Riv, but are the brands sold there. There's twine wrapped in more than a few places. I've read, recommended, and loaned both the latest RBW catalog and *Just Ride.* A hatchet and some camping bits are likely to be ordered soon. Is there a component percentage or a ratio of parts by mass that determine how Rivvy a bike is? Now, I'm sure I can call myself an iBOB, but as Google Groups go, the tone here is more comfortable. No one will quibble if I lurk or occasionally suggest that if Riv describes a hunk-O-cheese as a good thing to put in a Sackville pannier, then cheese should be On Topic, but am I a Riv Owner? Not exactly, but I'd like to think that if I mailed a postcard to HQ, they'd reply with the same. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: Riv Owner Qualifications
Hey there Matthew - There's never been a litmus test. Or a percentage. Just an interest to engage in polite discussion is all that is needed. The topics here are definitely narrower than other lists, by design and agreement. But the tone and quality of this group comes entirely from the folks who share their stories, knowledge, questions and photographs. We are all lucky to have found one another. Welcome and enjoy the discussions! - JIm / list admin -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: Entmoot plans?
Hrum Hooom. Ents being notoriously methodical and ponderous (non-hasty) in decision-making, this could take a while. I've been of the same mind as Philip, though the first step is to fix the two things that have had my Quickbeam hanging rather than rolling. So, to this weeks agenda, those tasks have been added. Given that Quickbeam was always regarded as the hasty ent, I see nothing wrong with such mercurial decisions. - Jim -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group.
