[RBW] Re: Please help me with my Honjo fork crown problem please.

2014-11-05 Thread lungimsam
UPDATE:
So I removed that twisty front fender, and, holding it out to look a it saw
that the stays were a little off center in the eyelets, as one stay was
further out to the side of fender than the other.
I loosened eyelets and re-centered the stays, attached to dropouts and
retightened stay eyelets, and then reattached at fender nut and everything
from the fender nut back is in nice alignment now. I think I did it in that
order.

The nose still goes off a little to the drive side (just a smidgeon), but
doesn't take much of a touch of a finger to center it. I am hoping to use
the VO rando rack fender eyelet to keep it centered since there isn't much
tension required. The diff at the rack eyelet to move the fender over is
about 2/10ths of the center hammered hexagon divot on the center track of
hammered hexagons on the fender. So I am within the same center divot on
the fender whether I correct it or not.

One thing I have noticed, despite the big clearance I have with these
fenders, the stay eyelet nuts inside the fenders are only a few mm's from
the tire (Hetres), and can't get further away. I already cut the screws all
the way down to the end of the nuts, so the nuts are filled with the screws
fully, so I can't go shorter. I am using all the clearance my frame and
brake calipers allow. Maybe changing to a 38 Loup Loup will buy me some
more clearance. I have 32 Cyprus tires that would get me massive clearance,
I think. Not sure if I want to cut it so close with the 42 Hetres.

I have not found the 105 to be the best choice for very small chainrings.
The cage is too long to get low enough before it hits the stay. I have
found the Campy Comp Triple to be much better. I think the IRD is molded
after it.

Enjoy the new ride.

occasionally camp with this bike - a good platform is key.

I also changed out most of the drivetrain:
 1. dropped the 44T for a 42T to hopefully reduce the chance of breaking
 another front derailleur
 2. went back to indexed 9-speed downtube shifters and rear 9-speed
cassette - also retrying the Wipperman chain

In an effort to reduce the (albeit light) occasional shimmy, I put a Miche
 needle bearing headset on.

Initial test rides show are nice and snappy!!, but I have some work to do
on the derailleur adjustments (rear) and will have to put the 105 front
derailleur back on (tried an older Sachs) due to clearance on the tight
Compass cranks. One more day and it'll be just right.

speaking, meat production in this country (and others) has a terrible
cost. Yes, there are options for those who can afford it, to buy organic,
make sure the animals are treated humanely and not pumped with
antibiotics, etc. etc. That ability/luxury feels like a really smug 1st
world problem to me. I'm no longer a vegetarian but I've largely kept to
a very meat lite diet because I personally feel it's irresponsible not
to. Kind of similar to my car lite lifestyle. That's my choice. But I

Re: [RBW] OT (grant-related, not Riv-related): lo-carb, high fat protein, ketosis, c.

2014-11-05 Thread Deacon Patrick
The problem you describe, Addison, is not with meat itself, but with modern
animal husbandry practices, which largely are the result of feeding animals
grain rather than their natural diet of grass and wild foraging. Hormones
and antibiotics and pesticides are not generally needed for grass fed
animals, and they get to live life on the open range. Proper grazing
practices actually help promote strong plant growth and prevent the
arid-ization of land. These practices are easily and cheaply implemented in
third world countries.

You are right, that current grain-fed meat costs less than grass fed. This
is because our nation has a highly subsidized (and thus false) grain
economy. Get ride of grain subsidies and prices are at parody.

With abandon,
Patrick

[RBW] Bike Theft at SF Embarcadero BikeLink Parking - thief wore a Riv cap !

2014-11-05 Thread James P
Part Public Service Announcement, Part Call to Arms to find the culprit who
brings Riv into disrepute by his actions.

Here's the message from BikeLink, with pictures:
http://hosted.verticalresponse.com/1144185/960027eede/544118083/df81acb839/

Brief outline from BikeLink:
There was a theft over the weekend at the Embarcadero Bike Station. Three
bikes were stolen. The thieves stole a BikeLink user's backpack and wallet
near the end of the week and then used the stolen card to
access the station. The card was not reported as lost by the owner. The
card was blocked immediately upon discovering it was used by the thieves,
but the methods they used to break locks were fairly sophisticated, so
we'll be keeping an extra eye on things in case they try again.

2014-11-05 Thread 'Chris Lampe 2' via RBW Owners Bunch
Nice article. So basically we are just going back to the All-Terrain
Bikes that came out of Marin County in the late 70's and early 80's. I've
done a bit of reading about the history of the MTB (as well as watching
Klunkerz) and those guys (and a couple of girls) were really just doing
exactly what Guitar Ted is talking aboutdeveloping bikes that could
be ridden almost anywhere. The whole downhill/extreme terrain thing came
about when the racers took over. I know that Repack was all about racing
and was a huge influence but it seems those guys were doing a lot of what
would now be called expedition biking.

I've evolved to prefer just that type of bike and no longer have any
interest in riding anything less than 55mm tires. When I picked up a 1984
MTB last year, I did some research on bikes from that era and in 1985
Bicycling put out a book and they were still referring to them as ATB's,
which is actually much more appropriate than mountain bike.

[RBW] Re: WTB: Looking for a poncho

2014-11-05 Thread Edwin W
I have a Vaude and a Grundens. Different beasts. The Grundens I heavy and
substantial and doesn't flap around. I use it if it is raining when I leave
home. Like this morning.
The Vaude I leave at work, rolled up in its little pouch, light as a feather,
for when I need it in a pinch. Just enough to get me home.

The Grundens is too expensive, but then if you use it multiple times over
multiple years, it is less bruisingly so.

They are both so dorky you might find some people who bought them and are too
embarrassed to wear them.

Good luck,

pain with with a fully loaded Hunq with large Saddlesack and what-not.

I dismount after stopping as well, same thing in reverse - no coasting

as far as gravel riders the gravel races are races, full lycra kits

I stand on my left leg and swing my right leg over the back of the
bike. Even with the Large Saddlesack or panniers, I don't have a
problem with that.

When I used to ride a tandem with a kid stoker, I learned to swing my
leg over the handlebars instead, because stokids have to climb up on
the bike while it is stopped, so he would already be seated on his
saddle and I didn't want to kick him in the face. But now that I don't
ride a tandem anymore I swing my leg to the rear.

[RBW] Re: Atlantis chainstay length

2014-11-05 Thread Peter Adler
For comparison-to-analogous-framesets purposes, here are some chainstay
lengths for my early 70s Raleigh sport touring frames - sort of Ur-Rivs:

23/58cm 700c 1971 Raleigh International - 45.5 cm
23/58cm 650B conversion 1972 Raleigh Super Course Mk. I - 45cm

Re: [RBW] Re: Bike Industry Controlled by Grant Peterson

2014-11-05 Thread Mike Schiller
Anne, If you call riding 120 miles a day for 3 days just riding yes.
Most of the riders that I know or read about were on that schedule. I
was signed up to ride that event but figuring if I rode only 90 miles a
day I would be behind most of the others and I would run into empty shelves
at the few and infrequent tiny stores along the way so I decided to wait
until next year. At least that was what the organizer said to discourage
the 300+ riders that signed up. I'm signing up for next year and will give
it a go.

Others that I know went at a different time and did the ride over 5-6 days.
More tour then the event.

As far as the referenced site, most of those rides in the Midwest are very
race oriented, I'm sure some participants were more laid back in their
ride but are in the minority.

I'm doing the Outback this year with a friend or two. We'll go at the just
ride pace of six days.
