Despite the soaps and high temperatures in the dishwasher, there have been

To save energy, we don’t use the “dry” feature on the dishwasher, so the

Re: [RBW] AHH in Riv Reader?

2015-01-14 Thread James Warren
I can look, but I when the AHH was being developed, the announcements about it came kind of piecemeal in the Reader. I'm pretty sure there was not a big spread like there was for many other models. I do remember one that had a nice shot of the prototype bike (which I believe is Grant's personal bike still) with logo being tested out in paper on the downtube.

In 2006 or so, there was a lot of Saluki stuff going on, and then came the word that there would be 700C Saluki in the big sizes for the bigger people. I think because of this, there a slightly diminished feel in the air of "new model."

Then people started getting AHH's and riding them, and the excitement of "new model" really picked up in 2007, because the model is so fricking awesome.

Virtually does allow for one or two great tires. However, I think we
can surmise based on some passing comments in a recent BQ article that
Jan himself sees room for improvement (i.e., bringing the 559 offerings
up to the same standard as the other Compass sizes) so perhaps they'd
best be considered as very good rather than great. It's even
possible to view [reading between the lines, to be sure] recent comments
in his blog regarding his policy of not commenting on new products
before they are issued as a hint that such improvements may in fact be
in the offing.

When Tim said Grand Bois, I assumed he /meant/ these two Compass models.

I'm confident that's what he meant, too.

[RBW] FS: near-mint Atlantis frameset and 26 Mavic/chris king wheelset

2015-01-14 Thread Z
Hello group,

I'm reluctantly selling my recently-acquired 56 cm Atlantis frameset and
26 wheelset. I was hoping to turn these into a whole bike, but it wasn't
meant to be.

Here's the 411:

- 56 cm Rivendell Atlantis, Waterford-built. Only blemishes are from
previous owner fitting wheels (scratches at dropouts) and from me fitting a
seatpost (*really* tiny nick in paint at seatpost clamp). Never been
built up or ridden. Still packed as if it had come straight from Walnut
Creek. Includes installed FSA headset and front/rear brake cable hangers.

- 26 Mavic XC717 rims, 32 hole, black with ceramic coated side wall.
Laced to silver Chris King classic hubs (135 mm rear spacing). Rims show
signs of use and wear but true and in good condition. Hubs are
particularly shiny. No skewers.

$1600 for the frameset, $200 for the wheelset or $1750 for the package
(shipped).

Please contact me off-list for photos or additional info. I'll probably
soon be selling some Rivvy-style parts and an almost-complete Rawland Stag
(size Large) as well.

Thanks,

Zach

[RBW] High Intensity Interval Training

2015-01-14 Thread 'doc' via RBW Owners Bunch
With the other thread focusing on the diet aspects of EBDJ, I though I'd
chime in with a testimonial about the exercise perspective. Due to
schedule, I haven't been riding much, but took up HIIT last fall after
watching Michael Mosley's BBC show The Truth About Exercise. Grant
pretty much takes the same approach.
Due to bloodwork I get with regular checkups and for work provided health
care, I was able to do a before and after HIIT comparison, and have been
rather impressed. The only change I've made is to start taking a Fish
Oil/Omega 3 supplement to get my HDL a little higher. Here is a link
https://gspiess.wordpress.com/2014/12/10/my-experience-with-hiit/ to my
blog about the specifics.
My next challenge is to decrease my carb intake and cut out as much sugar
as possible to address the extra pounds I'm carrying. I have had success
in the past with both Atkins and intermittent fasting (on separate
occasions), but they can be a challenge when living in a carb filled
household.

About a 57cm I think. Made in Canada, fairly long horizontal dropouts,

Room for 35mm tires and fenders.
About $120 for DC to Richmond, Va area pickup.

Apologies if this has been covered. I've been digging around for anything

know of a spread on the Hilsen in the reader announcing its debut or a bio
or anything like that? Something like the spread the Sam got recently.
  Thanks for your time.

... in the absence of it in your diet, your body will synthesize 7-10 grams
(that's right, not milligrams) per week to satisfy the body's needs.

Not an under the top tube, but I have been using the PDW Big Sliver for
about a year now.
https://www.ridepdw.com/goods/inflation/big-silver
Its small enough to hide out of the way under a bottle, but its also big
enough to properly inflate a tube with less than the usual 5 stokes of
a minipump.

Re: [RBW] FRAME..PUMP?

2015-01-14 Thread Tim Gavin
I also use a Zefal for my two bikes that have pump pegs under the top tube.

I use a Lezyne Micro Floor Drive pump clipped under the bottle cage for my
other three bikes. I got spare brackets so each bike has one.

The Micro Floor Drive is like an itsy-bitsy floor pump, with a hose and a
small stand. It works for schraeder or presta. I have the HP model ($45)
which works great for even my fat bike tires. The HPG model ($58) has a
pressure gauge in the hose.

Congratulations on the hip rehab and intake overhaul. Nothing like results
to gauge your effort.

I recall about a year ago I was getting really tired of all this talk of
primal/paleo/low carb/let's eat better talk around here. In fact i was more
or less avoiding the topic altogether. Can anyone imagine why? :-)

Then last April I had my left hip replaced (documented here to some
degree) and decided that as long as I had to up my non-cycling exercise,
walking, stretching, and core stuff suggested through PT, I might as well
take off some of the lard I was carrying around.

My surgery was at the end of April and in May I was recovering and
frankly, eating garbage as a treat for my recovery (not a good way to
recover I might add - now). Still it was on my mind. Once I was fully
mobile I decided I'd try eating at least a bit healthier and stopped
bringing sweets home, switched to salads at work, and cut way back on carbs
(not in line with any particular plan, just cutting back).

I noticed some improvement in both health and weight and started paying a
bit more attention to the threads on the topic here. I made a few more
modifications but still was only losing weight only gradually.

When Grant's book came out I figured, why not? At least I would supporting
him and such. Well it made sense to me and as I'd already cut way back on
carbs it wasn't particularly difficult physically to go further (though
mentally I still wanted a bit of pie from time to time).

That's when the weight more or less started falling away and my health
improved noticeably, not just to me but to other folks as well.

I've lost about 50 lbs. since surgery, much of it in just the last three
months, though not an unhealthy pace. My energy is great and I don't bonk,
at least not on anything shorter than 60-65 miles (haven't gone longer than
 that recently).

I just got blood work back and compared it with numbers from fall with my
doctor yesterday. He was very impressed and happy that at least one of my
patients takes my advice. I didn't tell him that while, yes, he had
recommended very low carbs, my change had little to do with his advice and
more to do with a bunch of folks who ride bicycles a lot. In any case I can
 report:

 1. My blood sugar A1C number which had been 'sweet' though not diabetic is
now just high normal. I expect that will continue to drop as does my doctor
given what I've told him. Since the A1C is a long term number, my drop
doesn't represent just a change for that particular hour or time of day,
but rather a real change over time.

 2. My overall cholesterol was up, but still very safe. However my HDL went
up about 50% and my LDL only a little so my overall risk factor has
dropped. My doctor was not concerned about overall numbers and was very
 pleased about the changes.

 3. I've lost as much weight in the last three months as I did in the
previous six. In addition, during those first six I was depriving myself of
stuff that now I don't even think about.

My friends have all noticed the change (losing the equivalent of a six
year old around your waist is, um, noticeable). In fact a couple of my
friends bought me new shirts in smaller sizes for Christmas saying I really
needed to change my wardrobe. 'm still holding off on shopping because I'm
not at my goal yet and don't want to spend a lot 'in-between.'

To top it off my riding had really improved. As I said I really don't bonk
now (at least not under 65 miles). And after training for years with a 50
lb. weight around my waist and a bad hip, hills are much, much easier, even
fun. My overall speed (never really a concern) is up over distance as well.

My good friend who has always pulled away from me going up hills is now in
my mirror (we don't race, but have always agreed that we need to ride up
hills at whatever pace works best for us). He's also acquired Grant's book
but admits he hasn't really followed directions as well as he might though
now that he's seen my results I suspect he'll pay more attention.

Well that's my story. I sort of wish I'd payed attention earlier but it's
true that we're never ready till we're ready. :-)

 Aloha, Bob
