[RBW] Re: Eat Bacon Don't Bonk?
I'm experiencing some of the same. I did a 200k on Saturday. I've been eating very low carb for only two weeks now. Saturday was actually day number 13. I'm going for my first RUSA R-12 so I need a 200k for the month of January. I chose a very flat (only 500 ft. of elevation gain in 200k!) route in VA. It was 31 degrees at the start with a 40 degree high, sunny, very light winds. I had fatty tea and yogurt with bleu cheese and macadamias for breakfast (Grant's concoction, but I forgot the coconut at home, darn it). I took along maybe 8-10oz. of salami and 6-8 oz of parmesan cheese. I didn't eat all of the salami and cheese. Maybe I ate slightly more than half. I also had half of a big dill pickle for the sodium. I felt ok for most of the ride. I had the pickle at 25 miles, then a couple of pieces of cheese between the 25 and 63 mile point. At 63 miles I stopped for lunch. I am caffeine free these days (for nearly a year now) except when on brevets. I find it is a great pick me up if only used on these long rides. I had coffee and salami and cheese. The next stop was at 103 miles and, although not hungry, I ate about 1/3 bag of almonds for the sodium. (I did take electrolyte tablets throughout the ride. About every hour.) So the last 22 miles I sort of ran out of gas. At around the 110 mile point I couldn't really produce any power. I ate a few more pieces of cheese and finished the ride. Overall I was happy to just finish. My rolling average was 15.2. I would expect that I could do better on such a flat route, maybe 16-17. But I was never hungry. I ate only because I felt that I should. I finished around 5:00 and I only had some fatty tea and a few macadamias that evening. There was no hunger. I look at it as an experiment, and a not at all unsuccessful one. I know that I am still trying to adapt to fat burning so Deacon's suggestion of dates (or some kind of natural carbs) is a good one. I also read Tony's link to Mark Sisson on fueling for a marathon, and I think I may try it for next month's 200k. Oh, by the way, I've lost 5 lbs in two weeks, although I gained one lb after the 200k. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. add me to the list of folks giving these a shot, i would've preferred the 700x30s but the 28s are a nice second choice. it's amazing that these guys will discount them so heavily only being 10% off on weight! they've could've called them 'leger' instead of 'extra leger'! shipping was very reasonable, all in it was ~$76 for two tires shipped to the east-coast, that's the regular price of one GB EL tire, i think that discount is worth the extra 10% weight penalty! -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Don't feel bad in transition (up to a year+?) that when you exercise you carry some form of natural carb (I used dates). Pop them as you need. Handy tip for tandem shifter cables, since you've got them: The Jagwire tandem cables come with two cylinder ends, one for Shimano-ish shifters and a smaller one (I'm betting for Campy). Assuming you're using Shimano-ish shifters, the smaller cable stop is a perfect match for the recess in Mafac Racer straddle cable bobbins (#59 in this Mafac blow-apart). The bar end shifters that I have on the Noodles should work on the Albastache bars. I should also be able to swap over the brake levers from the Noodle to the Alnbastache (I've got the original levers - non-aero, non-brifters). Is there something that I am missing? Will be cable lengths be similar or will I likely need new cables? For as long as I can remember, every bike that I have ever ridden has used drop bars, so I contemplate this shift with both excitement and a bit of apprehension. Re: [RBW] Re: Eat Bacon Don't Bonk?
I'm trying to understand how eating dates, which are basically sugar stuck together with a little bit of fiber and a little water, work in a diet that is supposed to be low in sugars and starches. Why not just eat jelly beans? On Mon, Jan 19, 2015 at 6:28 PM, 'Tim' via RBW Owners Bunch rbw-owners-bunch@googlegroups.com wrote: I'm experiencing some of the same. Don't Dremel, just beat them flat. Any smooth-faced hammer should work. Use a firm surface you can mar without regret, and back the rivet with a chunk of metal. [RBW] Re: Eat Bacon Don't Bonk?
I wanted to chime in on this thread after a very disappointing ride this weekend. I've been following the EBDJ regimen for about a month. I've gotten my carb intake per day down to the 20 to 25 grams, fat intake is in the 150 to 175 range and protein 55 to 75 grams per day. Net caloric intake per day seems to be coming out around 1500; a 500 calorie deficit each day. I have dropped 3.5 pounds so far (168.3 to 164.8) and percent body fat (as registered by FitBit scale so take with grain of salt) is down to 13.5%. During this time my exercise has been combination of very brisk walking two to three times per week (15 min/mile pace) for 5 to 7 miles at a time. Some strenuous hiking 6 to 8 miles. Sporadic HIIT sprints on the fluid trainer and also sporadic strength training. Too cold here for any distance outside on the bike until this weekend when it got into the 50's. So I took the opportunity to pack camping gear and head out with my riding buddies for 100 mile round trip S24HO. I started the day with coffee and heavy cream. greek full fat yogurt with heavy cream, coconut flakes and chia seeds. For the first 20 miles I felt strong and then stomach cramps and nausea hit me. A burger (no bun) with bacon and cheese at lunch stop did not improve the situation. At around mile 45 with 5 or so to camp we made a final stop to top off water for camp and I broke down and had a Pepsi (my buddies had beers). The Pepsi (possibly placebo effect) did bolster my spirits for the final push to camp. Dinner for me was a large egg, 4 oz pork sausage and 4 oz cheddar cheese. I again cheated with a 1 cup of a buddies mac and cheese. Breakfast consisted of 3 eggs (dehydrated egg crystals) four strips of bacon, coffee and a tablespoon of TJ ghee. The ride back was stomach issue free but I had no energy and my pace was much slower than I am used to. I ultimately pulled the plug after 40 miles and called for a ride home. Lots of variables here that surely have contributing effects. My main take away is that this isn't some sort of formula for transforming you into an elite athlete overnight and I need to adjust my expectations and probably most critical adjust my calorie intake and exercise regime. I plan to stick with EBDJ looking for a good balance that will work for me. Cheers Jayme On Saturday, January 10, 2015 at 3:42:04 PM UTC-6, Tim wrote: I'm curious what low carbers do for long rides? [RBW] Noodle to Albastache Swap - Trek 520 Touring Bike
Hi folks, I am contemplating a winter project that would convert an early 1990 Trek 520 touring bike into an around town grocery getter and/or bike trail, easy cruising bike. My plan is to swap out the Noodle bars on my Trek for Albastache bars. From what I have read, this looks to be a pretty easy conversion. After all, why mess with something that works? On the other hand, I think that this conversion will bring new life to a bike that does not get used very often. One other thought, what color Newbaum tape do you suggest to best match an Brooks B-17 honey saddle that has some years on it? Thanks for your thoughts. For one thing, I haven’t yet ordered the wheelset. Anyway, I test rode several bikes before I settled on the 650b Homer with albatross bars. Very nice! The one thing that could use a little improvement on the bikes that I test rode is the Tektro R559 brakes. Don’t get me wrong...nothing is really wrong with them and they were certainly adequate. But I thought they were just a little slow in stopping the bike. Perhaps I’m spoiled by the disk brakes on my other bike but I have no desire for disk brakes on a road bike or country bike. I have no doubt that RBW will setup and adjust the brakes for optimal performance. But I was wondering what other tweaks I could use to improve the R559 performance. Careful rim selection comes to mind, and I plan to discuss that with Rich. What about compressionless brake housing? Or what about Kool Stop or Yokozuna Brake Pads? Would either of these make any real difference or would I just be (pardon the pun) spinning my wheels? [RBW] Re: Fixing sharp edges on B67 rivets
I think a Drimmel tool would work well for that. I used a conical shaped grinding bit in a drill on my first B17. I ended up scuffing the leather a bit but it was worth it. I've had 2 B17s with the steel rivets and both rubbed me raw from one of the back corner rivets. It was the same rivet each time. The saddles with the copper rivets did not do that (I think, Eric, because they were hammered) and I figured if they did they would be easier to correct because of the copper being softer than steel. Re: [RBW] Re: A bike for Mom
Bobby you are too kind, thank you! Bob thanks alot, the Automatix hub is pretty cool if you are looking for simplicity, 1 gear won't cut it and you aren't afraid of a bit of weight. I didn't weigh it on its own but I did drop the hub the first time i went to pick it up (pre wheel build) when I was surprised by the weight. You feel the downshift very clearly if you get up to rhythm on a flat or downhill and you start to 'spin', I don't remember what the ratio's are but it does add back some resistance and I think it'll cruise up to 12-14mph w/out spinning out. (I'm sure you can look that up). In my test rides I never felt the upshift maybe because it only did that when I came to a complete stop...? I'm not sure. My mom commented that she thought the shifting should make pedaling easier not harder I explained about the spinning out and that the hub was now giving her more power per rotation. The inclusion of the coaster brake did it for me b/c I really didn't want to run a cable even for a drum brake let alone try and find a powerful, long reach brake for this frame. The finish is nice, the packaging was good and it built up quite easily from a wheel building perspective. Just don't discount the weight the first time you heft it! [RBW] Re: Noodle to Albastache Swap - Trek 520 Touring Bike
I support the conversion from drops to uprights. Personally, I find the Alba-type riding posture and handling is the most enjoyable for the type of relaxed riding I tend to do. You will likely need new cables and housing but that's hard to tell without seeing the bike in its current form. Depends on a few differences between set-ups like bar height, type of brake levers, etc. It would be a game-time decision during fit-up. What colour is the Trek? I think my fav Newbaum's colour is the dark blue (which does fade with use). If you are into the shellacking, I've heard that light colours (or white) work best. [RBW] Re: Eat Bacon Don't Bonk?
Jayme, my first attempt at ketogenic went similarly to yours, though without the cramps. I was running 30 miles a day on the Colorado Trail, with an ultralight camping setup in a fanny pack (too big a fanny pack). What I learned, over a year later, is that my body was not yet that good at producing the small(ish) amount of glucose needed to keep burning fat. Try this and see if it helps on your next long ride: continue eating as you have, but rather than eating fat during your ride, just have dates or similar source of carbs (honey, etc) to supplement your body's own ability to make glucose. Also, stopping for even five to 10 minutes can allow your liver to catch up with glucose conversion once it is good enough. With time, your body will get much more efficient at keeping the glucose you need as kindling for your fat burning fire. I hope this helps! [RBW] Re: Noodle to Albastache Swap - Trek 520 Touring Bike
Thanks for the responses. David - what a great looking bike. I live just down the road in East Aurora. Perhaps our paths will cross sometime. Kieran - my Trek is dark green -- a nice, distinguished British racing green. As I have been thinking about this project, I did consider switching to the Albatross bars. However, doing so would make it necessary to buy a new pair of brake levers and a shim to attach to my stem. Not a huge deal, but something to think about. As it is, the switch to a Albastache might require me to purchase a new stem - such as a dirt drop stem - since many folks have stated on this list and elsewhere that the 'stache bars seem to work best when they are positioned relatively level to the saddle. With my setup now, I think that the bars will end up being several inches below the saddle. If I decide to follow through with this project, I think that I will try the bars with the stem that I have and see how that goes before buying a new stem. [RBW] Re: Eat Bacon Don't Bonk?
Jayme, I think your summary about many variables is a good insight. I am sure the caffeinated sugary soda gave you an immediate boost. I am fairly certain that all the high fat food in your stomach, heavy on dairy, may have influenced cramps and nausea. That may not be the case on another day for you, and it might not be the case at all for someone else. It sounds like your are trying to put everything together for a eating and exercise program that works for you. Have you read Marl Sisson's book or website? He has a lot of valuable information to add to Grant's book; perhaps that should even be put as, Grant's book adds a lot of detailed information and personal insights to help guide through Sisson's voluminous writings, web links and comments from readers. Tony On Monday, January 19, 2015 at 7:46:07 AM UTC-8, Jayme Frye wrote: I wanted to chime in on this thread after a very disappointing ride this weekend. [RBW] Re: Noodle to Albastache Swap - Trek 520 Touring Bike
I like the Albastache bars a lot and have had them on a few bikes, but find that it is much more of an aggressive riding position due to you being in the curves where the brakes are, compared to the uprightedness (sp?) of the Albatross bars, which I enjoy for more upright townie riding. I did a Trek 500 '84 conversion a while back (also did a 650b conversion at the same time). I put on Albastache bars at first and ended up flipping them and finding some road diameter mtn syle lever brakes to setup on the bar ends as an Albatross-like setup, and that ended up working ok. If I had to do it again I would get a new stem and brake levers. Though, I think the big issue with the Albastache bars on that setup was that the stem I had on there was too short, so I'd also consider the Albastache bars with a shorter stem, I like short and high w/ Albastache, those drops are further out than you think. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group.
