[RBW] Anyone doing the EBDJ Wednesday Challenge?

2015-01-21 Thread Amit Singh
I did it yesterday between 1:30 - 6pm. Ate normal during eating hours, no
binging in that time span. Felt normal. Had a big mediterranean salad at
dinner and was so happy.

Today is day 2 and the hunger has me feeling a little ravenous and wobbly.
I can't wait until 1:30 today and am beginning to fantasize about what I
will eat when the clock strikes that magical hour. I have confidence in
knowing this feeling should pass soon so I can get back to work :)

Anyone else doing the Wednesday challenge? How is it going for you?

Re: [RBW] Re: Compass 26 × 1.75 Feedback requested

2015-01-21 Thread Shoji Takahashi
Hi Hugh,
I've used Compass 26x1.75 and Big Bens on my Hunqapillar. The Compass tires
are noticeably faster-- 40-min commute goes down to 35-min. (I have to stop
at lots of traffic lights, so maybe it's due to faster acceleration?)

I've used Compass and Big Bens about a year each in Boston-area roads
(potholes, debris) and packed dirt trails. No problems with either.

The Big Bens are larger volume. Their sidewalls seem to-be sturdier than
the Compass. I can't say whether that translates to fewer flats or reduced
chance of sidewall cuts compared to the Compass.

I highly recommend either tire for these road and trail conditions. I do
wish the Compass were wider... and I know others feel that way from a
previous thread. That might make a difference for you on your journey.
Also, the Compass folds nicely for a spare.

I've been using the Schwalbe extralight inner tubes, and they've been fine.
If you're going to embrace your inner weight weenie, I'd add them to the
list, too.

Happy riding!

2015-01-21 Thread Aaron Young
I've just replaced some Big Bens on an older mountain-y bike with the
Compass tires. Only limited riding on them so far, but they've been
great. Maybe a bit quicker feeling then the BB's. Just eyeballing, but
they seem to be almost as poofy as the Hetres (not 26, I know) I have on
my Sam, which I just love. The Compass have a bit more tread (Pasela
style), but so far they make me happy even though they are less-poofy than
the BB's. Wish I could give you a long term report on each, but I don't
have enough miles on either to do that yet.

day-long rides (75+ miles) with a mix of pavement and trails. The Big Bens
will pretty much roll over anything, and I tend to use them where that will
 be helpful: think monster truck.

 Dear Tim,

Congratulations! It sounds like a great day outside. There's a card?

Besides, What is more unracer than racing? Consider the following.

Tying into the eat bacon, don't bonk thread, short-ish racing efforts
(especially criterium racing and CX racing, shockingly enough) are a whole
lot closer to the HIIT exercises and Tabata sprints touted for the unracing
crowd than the moderate long-distance riding most of us do for fun.

 Consider:

Criterium: Bug-eyed for a minute or so at the start, settle into the
rhythm and recover if you're near the front, or get cross-eyed four times a
minute if you're in the back and having to hammer out of every corner; get
redlined for a minute or so to establish a break, a few minutes
criss-crossing into the red to hold off the charging pack, then see purple
stars for fifteen seconds at the sprint, recover gently? All in under an
 hour.

Cyclocross: Bug-eyed for fifteen seconds or so at the start, floating in
red haze and for a few seconds on the runups and barriers (so eight or ten
times in 45min, tunnel-vision on the finishing straight for ten seconds or
 so, recover gently.

I'd keep the corner of your card.

 Cheers,

I competed in my first race ever this Sunday, so I guess I should cut a
corner off my unracer card as penalty. :)

The Triple D winter endurance race is 63 miles (100k) of gnarly
snowmobile trail single track, B-roads, and the crushed lime Heritage Trail
outside of Dubuque, IA. It was 40F, and the surface conditions ranged from
sloppy to extra sloppy. 95% of the riders (including myself) chose fat
bikes. Steve (owner/operator of Thirtieth Century bikes in Iowa City) is
friends with Ira Ryan and rode a rigid steel Breadwinner 29er single speed.

I took comfortable breaks to warm up and chose a relatively sane pace, so
my time was near the bottom of the finishers at 8:45. Considering that
almost half of the riders don't finish the race (there is an associated
poker tour you can flex to if you drop out of the race proper), I feel very
 proud for finishing at all!

Overall, a challenging but fun experience. The race concept did act as
a motivator to push myself a little harder, but I wasn't aiming for a
place. I was racing the sun more than any other rider, and I still got in
 long after dark.

Riv-ish accessories: Brooks flyer, Crane bell, German mirror, Aardvark
saddle cover. I have to clean and re-wax the Brooks, as the elastic saddle
cover disappeared really early in the race.

Adding an SKU to the shop is a major administrative task, and if you have
limited numbers, it's easier to just sell them at a discount and clear the
 shelves.

I actually prefer the current tires, as the new ones will revert to the
dry-feeling casing that the first Extra-Legers used. We had too many issues
with them fraying, but perhaps we ride them harder than many Japanese

My recollection was that there was at least 2-3 mm on all sides, at all points.
Homer spec'd clearance is (per chart on Harris Cyclery site) 700x43mm, though,
more than I imagine your Redwood has.

The Big Bens are larger volume. Their sidewalls seem to-be sturdier
than the Compass. I can't say whether that translates to fewer flats or
reduced chance of sidewall cuts compared to the Compass.

I highly recommend either tire for these road and trail conditions. I do
wish the Compass were wider... and I know others feel that way from a
previous thread. That might make a difference for you on your journey.
Also, the Compass folds nicely for a spare.

I've been using the Schwalbe extralight inner tubes, and they've been
fine. If you're going to embrace your inner weight weenie, I'd add them to
 the list, too.

 Happy riding!

thing these days.Yeah I'm thinking like a weight weenie, and my truth is
the lighter the load along with less tire rolling resistance the happier
 I'll be.

Again thanks for the feedback and others please let me know your

2015-01-21 Thread David Banzer
Hi Jim,
Yes, I can fit 38mm with Tektro widemouth brakes, which does help with
clearance over the Shimano.
That was with a road tread too, so knobs, even small-ish, could add to the
overall clearance. I'd stick with 35mm with small knobs as the maximum. The
35mm USH sounds perfect. I'm going to pick up a pair to give my Redwood a
little more mixed terrain capability.

RE: [RBW] Re: 700C Tire suggestion for mixed terrain 200K on Redwood?

2015-01-21 Thread Allingham II, Thomas J
No, it has Paul Racers, and there's ample clearance under those. But spec'd
brake reach on the Hilsen is ~65mm, so there's a little more room under there
for bigger tires than on your 47-57mm reach Redwood.

Looks like your AHH has cantis. Yeah the Redwood has 47-57 mm brakes and is
similar in geometry to the Rambouillet, I have been told. The brake caliper
clearance is probably the limiting factor. Someone on here posted a Redwood
with 700x38s without fenders, but I don't want to buy something, get all
excited, but then have to exchange it out, you know?

And this one gives at least some indication of the rear clearance.

My recollection was that there was at least 2-3 mm on all sides, at all
points. Homer spec'd clearance is (per chart on Harris Cyclery site)
700x43mm, though, more than I imagine your Redwood has.

 Great tires, though.

I would be worried if those would fit. If they're really 38mm then should be
good but if closer to 40 on my rims that would probably be a no-go. They do
look pretty nice through and I did have it in mind already that I wanted to
order some other stuff from Rivendell.

Adding an SKU to the shop is a major administrative task, and if you have

I actually prefer the current tires, as the new ones will revert to the

Overall a very nice high-volume tire, but maybe not that much better than

I've forced myself to run my absolute least favorite tires on my

super neurotic when you are a minimalist packrat. Minimalist tendencies

It's 6:00pm here in CT. I had my tea with coconut oil and ghee this morning.
That's all I've been having until noon, when I always eat lunch. I didn't get
lunch in until 2:00 today. It was Grant's yogurt/bleu cheese/coconut/macadamia
concoction (which I've kind of grown to like.) I'm a little hungry now but I'll
have dinner around 7:00. It will be a big salad with smoked chicken, bacon,
gorgonzola, avocados, cherry tomatoes and greens. I'm in my third week of EBDJ
eating and I don't get ravenous like when I eat carbs.

sticking low carb at this point. Not ravenous, but definitely missing the

clementines for breakfast/mid morning snack. A nice lunch my wife packed
including turkey/cheese in a lettuce wrap w/ mustard, some baby carrots and
peppers and a couple olives... then dinner was a good test at a favorite
restaurant where I did my usual jalapeno burger sans bun and sub'd a garden
salad for the delicious fries... oh and 2 scotches! :) Probably not a
full execution of the diet's intent but it was a big step for me!

[RBW] Re: GrandBois tires on sale at Grandbois

2015-01-21 Thread Jan Heine
It's a bit more complex than that. The Standard tires have a lower tpi
casing, which improves their cut resistance. (Very fine threads are easier
to cut.)

The Extralights have a higher thread count, but not the highest TPI
Panaracer can do, because spacing the threads further apart makes the
casing more supple, rather than a super-dense weave. The blog post David
referenced explains it in more detail.

[RBW] WTT or WTB stem

[RBW] Knobby tires for 1st generation 48cm Sam Hillborne using 650b wheels.

2015-01-21 Thread RJM
I'm thinking of turning my road/touring Sam Hillborne into a mountain bike
and am looking for a tire for it. I have just begun my search and am pretty
sure the clearance on my Sam is too small for most of the modern 27.5
mountain bike tires that are on the market. Does anybody have any good
suggestions for a tire?

There are two trails local to me that I'm thinking of using the Sam on.
Both are singletrack but the first one is a trail that doesn't have any
roots or rocks to roll over, it is a pretty nicely groomed trail that uses
that really fine gravel surface. It is nice and hilly and winds all over
these ridges in a federal park. I have a set of Fatty Rumpkins on the bike
now but the tire doesn't grip all that well to the surface of the trail
when it has wet leaves, which it does almost always. So, I'm looking at
something knobby. The second trail is very rooty and rocky in places, with
lots of leaves, some loose dirt but hardpack too.

Here is the setup I'm thinking about on the Sam for this. I won't be using
fenders but I will be using XT V-Brakes, Albatross bars, mountain triple in
the front with a Shimano mega range freewheel in back. The wheels are
Phil Rivy hubs laced to Dyad rims. I haven't decided on shifting but it's
a toss up between bar end or thumb friction right now. Thanks.

[RBW] Re: Compass 26 × 1.75 Feedback requested

2015-01-21 Thread dougP
My wife's Atlantis has a Compass 1.5 on the rear, and while she likes the
ride, does get the odd flat, but not often enough to be a worry. I picked
up a Pasela TG when her front was worn it seems pretty much the same tire
as far as the sidewalls ride. Having the belt it's heavier but it's half
the money too. She's not an off-roader so no info on that service. I've
been very careful off-road with the Soma C-lines on my Atlantis as I sorta
abused the stock Paselas. Light sidewalls are more supple ride better,
but give up some protection from rock cuts. No free lunch or silver
bullets there.

If these are for your Atlantis, I'd just go for it enjoy the Compass for
pavement light off-road, and figure on using the ones you have been
running (WTB?) when we do expeditions with David, Mike, Jim, etc. Come to
think of it, Jim's had the Big Bens on his Hunqapillar for a long time

[RBW] Re: Compass 26 × 1.75 Feedback requested

2015-01-21 Thread stonehog
Hugh! I have had them on my Miyata for a year and change.
 https://flic.kr/p/g6AE6C

I recall when I received them feeling let down initially (before riding) as
the tread seemed thick and very much like a normal Pasela. However, after
a few rides, I realized this took nothing away from the comfort and speed
of the tires. It also gives them a bit more stickiness. I've only used
them for commuting, but they go well. My average ride times on this bike
are within a minute of my Homer with Stampede Pass tires. They are as
fast, and more importantly, as comfortable as the Hetres, and actually
remind me of these tires most of all. Or maybe it's the bike? :)

Like!!

I've used Compass 26x1.75 and Big Bens on my Hunqapillar. The Compass

 acceleration?)

I've used Compass and Big Bens about a year each in Boston-area roads
(potholes, debris) and packed dirt trails. No problems with either.

The Big Bens are larger volume.

I've been using the Schwalbe extralight inner tubes, and they've been
fine. If you're going to embrace your inner weight weenie, I'd add them

 the list, too.

 Happy riding!

Re: [RBW] Re: Surprising Failure Today

2015-01-21 Thread Tim Gavin
I had a derailer break in exactly the same place. However, mine was am '88
vintage XT M730
http://velobase.com/ViewComponent.aspx?ID=4a92b92d-00f7-40e0-9694-551ac9e9e554Enum=108
(very solid), and it broke because I picked up one of those little flags
(that mark buried utilities) in the chain and it jammed in the derailer.
The broken knuckle looked similar to yours.

A chain jam can break any derailer (and a jammed derailer can definitely
break a chain, as I learned during my fat bike race this weekend).

Thankfully, like your mishap, mine didn't hurt me or my bike. The chain
survived, and the wheel was okay after I did a tension and true.

*Sora Evidence: I set up three bikes with Sora triples, because I figured,
hey it's just a FD, save some money. All three of mine failed in the
exact same way, and it took me 10 seconds to Google search and find that
someone I don't know posted on the exact same failure that I had:

I wouldn't automatically blame poor metallurgy. There could have been a
precipitating event like a chain jamming that placed a high stress on the
 derailleur.
