Re: [RBW] PBP Prep - Homer and Atlantis climbing in Eastern PA - A ride report
Well written. I look forward to hearing your and Eric's reports of PBP. Curious: what sort of gearing do you use for this hilly route? What is your cruising gear range (for flat terrain, low wind conditions)? What speed did you average over the 128 miles? Interesting fact: I'm deaf, so I don't rely on voice commands or hand signals when on a tandem - mostly I focus on the rhythm and on the streets when it comes to stops, bumps, and turns. Most of the time I actually do all the talking (maps, etc) especially if the captain is talking to someone else in the group and not paying attention to the road. :) -E. what sort of gearing do you use for this hilly route? What is your cruising gear range (for flat terrain, low wind conditions)? What speed did you average over the 128 miles? I have a Rive recommended Sugino triple crank (http://www.rivbike.com/product-p/cr1.htm) and a shimano 770 11-34 cassette. That is my gearing for all terrain, hilly, flat, in between. My average moving speed is probably 15-16 mph - lower for real climby routes. I am not a fast climber. [RBW] Re: Dirt Drop stem with Atlantis?
Pros - If you run the bars 2 or more inches above seat height, I think the Dirt Drops help disguise the extra long quill since it pivots approximately midway. Seems to break things up ... to my eye anyway. Put some stem shifters and/or a brass bell on the quill and that tall neck will virtually disappear. Personally, I think the Dirt Drop looks far superior to a super tall Tallux with a short reach. Another pro is the Dirt Drop is stronger and less expensive than the Tallux. Keep in mind mountain handlebars and road bars have different dimensions. One requires 25.4 stem and the other 26.0. Be sure to get the larger so that rather than having to purchase another stem to switch between the two, you can simply purchase a $5 shim. To me the Dirt Drop is to bring you up and back. The DD I purchased was specifically for the mustache bar so I went 8. I would much rather err being a little more upright, than a little too stretched out. If you were trying to fit a bike slightly too small for you or with a short head tube then the 100 might be the thing. Your goals with the swap should point towards one or the other. [RBW] Dirt Drop stem with Atlantis?
My Atlantis came with that set up. I don't think there is anything wrong with the pairing, especially if you want the bars up and back. I think it especially helps if you like to use the drops without being so deep on the bike. Some would see it as an odd aesthetic, but I like the DD with about any bar. I'd say it's necessary with moustache. In the end, if it allows you get comfortable on the bike with a bar you prefer it's all good. Personally I could never get comfortable with noodles regardless of stem. My issues were with the shape of the bar not the position. One thing that also was an issue was the cable routing done by the PO. They ran the barend cables under the wrap along with the brake cables and made the shifting super sluggish. I ended up swapping to an albatross set up that I really like. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Re: [RBW] Re: Bike, Book, and Hatcheting
What do y'all find to chop with them lil' hatchets (axlings)? I used to love to chop wood, but always used a full-size axe -- one was a Sears that my father bought circa 1963 (my brother still has it), and t'other was a backyard forged head on a hand-carved handle, Kenya, circa 1966. The tree trimmers came and chopped 2' thick limbs from the trees near the house (very pretty watermelon-colored-with-white-veins wood; the pink the color of our Sandia Mountains at dusk. The trimmers used *pangas.*). I'd go out on a weekend afternoon and chop those logs into smaller ones -- wish I had the option to do that now. As good exercise as digging ditches, but far more fun. Re: [RBW] Dirt Drop stem with Atlantis?
I've never drop-bar'd an Atlantis, but I've drop-bar'd many other bikes typically not drop-bar'd, and the DD stem is a wonderful instrument for that end. My favorite (he repeated hisself endlessly) was the very early '90s DB Axis Team with the head cut off almost flush with the tt. After conferring with Riv, I bought a 10 cm DD stem to hold the 46 cm Noodle, and the ride, despite my predilection for a shoved-back saddle and the (by road bike standards) unnaturally long top tube, the DD got the bar in a very comfortable place with at least 4 of quill to spare. Remember that, as you raise the bar, it comes back at you. The final setup was quite comfortable-- and note again: there was much quill to spare. IMO, the Atlantis is a natural for a drop bar -- go for it! [RBW] Re: Suggest a 36 hole rim that looks like the EQ21?
The weird thing about the Velocity rims is that either the 26 Synergy http://www.velocityusa.com/product/rims/synergy-559 or the 26 Atlas http://www.velocityusa.com/product/rims/atlas-559 are the perfect wide size and perfect boxy shape - but unlike every other Velocity rim (and almost everyone else's rims these days), they're only available in silver and polished silver. Same for the NoBS http://www.velocityusa.com/product/rims/nobs-559, which is a skosche wider than the Atlas, at 25.4mm. [RBW] Re: More Sam Love--and do you ride your Riv through winter?
I live in Central Oregon and I ride year round on my Atlantis. I hate cars, and I am car-less. We get snow, and it gets pretty cold. Winter before last, it hit twenty below. Crazy weather warming weirdness. Anyhoo, here are my tips: I run fenders with lots of clearance and ensure that the bottom of the fenders are closer to the tire than the top. This ensures snow does not get packed into a narrowing space between the tire and fender. I made long fender flaps from medium weight leather that gets neatsfoot oiled yearly. A Son hub with a Luxo U light, is mounted on the front rack. I took an old fender and pop riveted a short extension onto the existing fender on the front to prevent water from splashing up onto the light and vent hole. I use studded tires and run pressure low enough to ensure the studs make contact with the ice, and to provide a small amount of comfort for the battering of riding over auto-chewed-chunks. I treated the inside of the frame with Frame Saver, twice. I keep the scratches touched up and wax my bike three or four times throughout the year. Waxing helps the crud to fall off and helps preserve the finish. I had my Atlantis powder coated to give it a little more armor compared to the stock paint. Waterproof panniers and a Ortlieb handlebar bag carries stuff. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group.
