Re: [RBW] RE: FS: Paul Racer Brakes

2016-04-06 Thread Tim Gavin
Patrick-

My '97 Riv Road should be essentially identical to yours.
So, the Racer should have the correct reach.

I assume you have the Racer Medium. You should be able to distinguish which
model you have by looking at the Paul Components web site.

FYI, mine will fit no wider than a 650 x 38 tire; the fork legs and chainstays
are too narrow for a fatter tire. I find the new Pari-Moto tires to be
reliable, very fast, and a great price.
I appreciate my Riv so much more with these wider tires; I don't like the ride
of 700 x skinny at my weight (225#).

The Tektro R559/Silver brakes also work well, but they intrude upon the fender
space.

The biggest concern with a 650b conversion of a Riv Road is the low bottom
bracket.
With 170 cranks, I can scrape a pedal if I crank while leaning in a turn (so I
don't do that). The low BB means lower stand over, though, which is nice when
I dismount.

I hope the conversion works out and let's you appreciate your Riv even more.
Best of luck!

Cheers,
Tim

[RBW] Re: Stolen rivs in seattle

2016-04-06 Thread Michael Ullmer
I wanted to post a big thank you to everyone on the list who responded and
sent kind messages along. It felt great to have a community of people who
knew and appreciated what it meant to have TWO Rivs stolen. A LOT of time
was spent putting these together, piece by piece, and to people like my
insurance company they were just two "bikes."

As many of you saw, the Hillborne was recovered thanks to Aarons Bicycle
Repair, less a Mark's Rack, Wald Basket and a Tubus Nova Low-rider rack
that the thieves literally ripped off (pieces of the struts are still
attached to the front eyelets). It also sustained quite a bit of paint
damage and a dent on the right chainstay just off the bottom bracket shell.

The San Marcos was actually seen a few hours after my Hillborne was
recovered only a couple blocks from my house. The rider was confronted by
someone who knew it was stolen after looking at Bike Index. The rider
claimed that he "tried" to get it back to the owner (me) by posting it on
CL, but he definitely did not. The rider got confrontational and took off
and I haven't heard anything about it since. I'm still hoping though, it
was a great build that I was pumped to have ready for this summer's riding.

The insurance company is going to cover a portion of the loss which is
great. Not sure when that's all going to come through, but I'm in no rush.
Not sure what I'll replace it with yet, an Ocean Air Rambler sounds very
tempting.

If I learned anything from this, make sure you write down serial numbers!
If you have more time, take pictures and make a spreadsheet with details
about your builds.

Again, thanks everyone for your support!

Re: [RBW] FS: Paul Racer Brakes

2016-04-06 Thread Tim Gavin
Racers have the correct reach for a 700c to 650b conversion --- if your
700c Riv had relatively tight clearance.
For example, my Riv Road Standard barely was designed for short-reach
brakes and barely cleared a 700 x 28 tire. The 57-67 mm reach of the Paul
Racer is perfect for this application.
If your Riv has the clearance for a tire larger than a Jack Brown, then the
Racers may not have enough reach.

To be sure, you can measure your Riv.
http://www.sheldonbrown.com/calipers.html
Add 19 mm* to your measured reach. (*difference in radius between 700c/622
and 650b/584)
If this number is between 57 and 67 mm, the Racer should work.

FYI, the Tektro R559/Silver brake has 55-73 mm reach (a bit more if you
need it) and Dia Compe 810s have 81 mm max reach.

Sean Hipkin, formerly of Rivendell, had his frame pump in the rear
triangle. There are a few pics of his Legolas:
http://www.rivbike.com/product-p/staff9.htm

It doesn't look like he rigged a pump peg, but did use a strap. I tried
this on my AHH with a Zefal pump from Riv, and it seemed fine. I haven't
ridden it a lot like that, though.

Good luck!

Re: [RBW] Re: New build photos of my Riv Allrounder

2016-04-06 Thread dougP
Some of those photos do look familiar, esp the Nevada trip. You've loaded
your A/R down as much as I have my Atlantis, judging by the Oregon trip
photo. Another tribute to the versatility of Grant's designs. So yeah,
I'll bet the A/R is about a pound lighter than the Atlantis. For that you
get a livelier ride un-loaded & decent handling with a load. No way am I
taking pix of my speedo at 50 MPH!

After much fiddling about with weight on my Atlantis, I'm convinced it's
more about placement & balance than "how much". People do serious tours
with Hilsens & Hillborns with pleasant reports. OTH, I can load my
Atlantis to handle like a noodle. Rivendells overlap nicely to span a
spectrum of uses, depending on how they're set-up. Your variety of
configurations is evidence of how far you can go with one bike.

[RBW] Re: New build photos of my Riv Allrounder

2016-04-06 Thread dougP
Addison:

That is a beautiful build. Nothing like a full tear down to allow you to
clean all those hard to reach places.

One question: you mention 26 lbs weight (carbon assisted, chuckle). Seems
kinda light, if that includes the rack & basket. I recall weighing my 58
cm Atlantis one time while re-assembling after a trip, and getting
something like 26-27 lbs before I put on any racks. It would have had
35-40 mm road touring tires. An old Rivendell flyer or reader mentioned
the Atlantis F was roughly a pound more than their other bikes of
comparable size.

On the fender question, it looks great as-is. Given that you have fendered
bikes, I'd keep it as-is. Just pulled the fenders off my Atlantis after El
Nino decided to pass us by. Maybe next winter.

[RBW] New Nitto front rack?

2016-04-06 Thread Bill Lindsay
I was doing some price comparison of Nitto stuff, and I usually just search
"Nitto" at both Ben's Cycle and at Alex's to get a feel for things. While
scanning Ben's I saw this front rack that I had never seen before. It's
called the F25.

http://www.benscycle.com/p-25908-nitto-campee-f25-lowrider-front-rack.aspx

That's got some cute details that I havent seen before. It's got the
splayed out shape that Francophiles like, but it's got a tall thin shape to
fit more normal panniers. No removable lowriders and a completely flat,
tombstone free top platform. There are no light mount positons to be seen,
which might be a bummer, and I can't tell from the photo how it avoids
interfering with the front QR skewer, but it's always fun to see a Nitto
Rack that I've never seen before.

I'm not sure of all the nuances, but I believe the all rounder never came
with 700c wheels, which the 58cm and larger Atlantis frames do. Beyond
that, I think they are really quite similar. I wonder if the tire clearance
is the same? Atlantis can fit 2.35 slicks.

Michael, that makes perfect sense. One bike and I'd be on the Hunq also (I
was for a couple years before the SS bug bit to the point of no return!).
Yes, every bike is a single speed if you don't shift, but I tested that out
before buying my QB and the extra noise of the drivetrain, the simple
knowledge that I could shift -- it is not the same experience -- though for
many it is close enough.

With abandon,

Portland, which is mainly very flat, but I figure I could do both with the big

It would also make the $2,000 price tag for a Hunq frame easier to justify.

[RBW] Kojaks vs supremes

Looking at Schwalbe's website, Kojaks are rated 4 for puncture protection vs
4.5 for Supremes. OTOH the Kojaks' protection is provided by a double layer of
nylon described as very good for a fast sporty tire. Are they really almost as
protected as the Supremes? Thinking about trying them for fun on my commuter
but I really don't want (any) flats.

[RBW] Frame pump placement - Rear triangle possible?

2016-04-06 Thread Pierre
I am thinking getting a full-size frame pump. I have a 59 cm Hilsen.

I am wondering if any frame pump would fit nicely & tightly on the rear
triangle (non drive side, on seat stay)?

(looking at pictures, it surely looks nice + I think my S couplers may
get in the way if placed on TT).

[RBW] Re: Cazadero lumpy bumpy

2016-04-06 Thread Neil Doran
I've had this issue before. Once it was resolved by going to high pressure
to make sure the bead is properly seated, but you already tried that.

I blame the tube. I've had more than a little bad luck with faulty tubes
that will have a massive bulge at a thin spot. Also had this problem, for
some reason, repeatedly using Schwalbe 650B tubes within a Panaracer on a
VO rim. Switched to 26" tubes and the fit was perfect, with no more hop.

I'd try a new (name brand) 26" tube. Good luck, it's an annoying problem to
have.

[RBW] Re: Nitto Campee front rack advice: Center-mounting a light

2016-04-06 Thread Michael Hechmer
I use this rack with the small Arkel bags. These fit just fine. They did
not work with the small racks that RBW sells. With the pannier frames off
the weight differential with other small racks is insignificant.

I agree that a center mounted light makes more sense but there are also
good reasons for choosing the left side. I wouldn't make a deal breaker
out of that.

Re: [RBW] Centerpulls vs. cantis

2016-04-06 Thread Michael Hechmer
I agree with everything Steve has written but can add a few more variables
to think about, along with sharing personal experience. In 45 years of
adult riding and wrenching I have owned and used a lot of brakes.
Currently I have Paul's Racer Ms on the Ram, Neo-Retros on the Saluki,
Tecktros on the Trek and posted Racers on the Bilenky tandem, but am
switching these to cantis while getting that frame powder coated. Here's
what I like about each.

CP brakes sit above the fender and so the pivots stay a lot cleaner than
cantis, which sit next to the wheel, below the fender. Living on a dirt
road this helps reduce my clean/maintenance work. The Racer M's on the Ram
have very good stoping power and offer better fender clearance than Shimano
dual pivot sidepulls but not much better than old single pivots like the
Campy Grand Comps.

The posted racers on the tandem also offer good stopping power but it is
hard to compare with a single, since the weight & distribution are so
radically different. (Our tandem, loaded for inn to inn travel, weighs
about 440 lbs.) The Racers are specked for 55 mm fenders but I have fit
the VO 60 mm under them. The brakes are compact and travel easily when I
disassemble the tandem for travel, which cantis don't do so well. However
these brakes just barely open enough to clear an (actual) 38mm tire. Above
that would require deflating the tire. That's why I am switching to
cantis, to use a 44 mm tire.

The Neo-Retros have phenomenal stopping power, the best opening,
(especially with road pads instead of the long V brake pads they typically
come with.) but they do get pretty grimy if you ride in a lot of rain.
This doesn't affect their power but I suspect wears the pivots.

I dispute the assertion that all cantis are hard to set up. There is a
small learning curve with the Paul's, since the process is different but
after that it is very easy and the on-line instructions are clear. I have
owned Shimano and Tectro cantis, both of which were annoyingly hard to deal
with. I have also owned a pair of hi profile Di-Compe's which were easy to
set up but had sub-par braking power.

Paul's brakes are expensive (although not as expensive as Compass) but all
the wear parts are available at very reasonable prices. If I were 40 years
younger and just starting to collect good road bikes, good cantis would be
my first choice with maybe disks getting a look see.

Ha! Actually, Ron, while I hate to take away your triumph, it was more the
rock to toe encounters on trails combined with the frustration of having to
pick the right side of the pedal (with our without spikes) that has me in
shoes for every ride. However, I've found a pair of sandals that should
work, so they on on the Spring wish list!

Lungimsam and Daniel, H. I'm not as smart as you. I find them
irritating. Grant is right and drivers give me a wider birth. I've seen the
stats about helmet use and cycling safety and there is no correlation, let
alone causation, as Holland has minimal helmet use and higher safety. I've
nothing left there to protect anymore. Pick whichever one will keep us from
devolving into a helmet discussion. Grin.

Thanks, Takashi! I talked with my wife last night and she is game for
attempting to cross a deerstalked and cycling hat. We'll see what happens!
If any make it to my head and on a ride, you'll see it here. Grin.

Patrick,

Stingray Hat from Mont-bell:
http://www.montbell.us/products/disp.php?cat_id=2401_id=2108117_cd=1
It comes with chin strap. (Click "Light Tan" color, and it shows chin strap)

It's made from cotton, but I don't know whether it's organic or not.
Lining is polyester. Maybe you can rip it off if you don't like it, but
that converts side mesh into mere holes.

Attached picture is mine, after being machine-washed 10 times or so.

Good luck!

Re: [RBW] Re: Cazadero lumpy bumpy

2016-04-06 Thread Hugh Smitham
Drew,

I like them. The 650b version weighs 470g which isn't the lightest but damn
light. They handle hard pack and semi loose dirt trails nicely with
pressures around 32# front & 35# rear and are really fast rolling with the
center ridge. Not much puncture protection which has me considering a
tubeless setup, however I have some trepidation with the side wall
strength? Keeping the weight down meant shaving material from the casing
and side walls and you don't really want a sidewall gash tubeless. I need
to ride them a bunch more to really know how they hold up.

Cheers,

~Hugh
