Well I think the color discussion was all in fun especially since none of us
can dictate what that may end up being on these bikes. It's a bike forum and
all sorts of topics get tossed around just for the sharing of ideas.

2017-03-22 Thread 'Mark in Beacon' via RBW Owners Bunch
Depending on your pbh, another great option would be the possible next
batch of Roscoe mixtes, PBH of 77 to 87, so saddle heights around 66 to 76
(see other thread). That might be the ticket--slightly lighter than the
Clementine, but can take the nice comfy tires, and will at least look a
teeny bit faster than ol' Clementine.

2017-03-22 Thread Abcyclehank
No horse in this race since I have a jumbo mixte mountain bike on the way.
However, I am happy leaving colors up to Will in my case or anyone else given
that opportunity by Grant. Personally I feel that is a slippery slope
suggesting colors; to many perspectives, to many contradictions, hope all are
content and grow to love whatever it end up being.

Now back to your regularly scheduled suggestions regarding your new frames.

[RBW] Another herd in desperate need of thinning

2017-03-22 Thread lconley
I thought I had about 15-16 bikes but wrote it down and came up with 21
including the anticipated HubbuhubbuH so it is definitely time to sell a
few. Trying not to become a hoarder, but I guess that ship has sailed.

I have two 56 cm Double TT Sams - one 2012 blue headtube built as a single
speed with grey 700x50 Big Bens (don't try this at home, White Industries
Eno eccentric hubs and centerpulls required) and a 2016 metal flake orange
noodle bar 22 speed (my "racing" bike) with 700x44 Compass Snoqualmie Pass
tires, Curtis Odom LF Holey hubs. I am going to transfer the single speed
components to the Rosco Bubbe 50cm version 1 that is on it's way - so the
Blue Sam frame will be for sale - w/headset, BB and I can throw in some
Tektro sidepulls with it if desired. It is in excellent condition, no dents
or damage, just a few paint chips if you look for them. This was my 1st
Rivendell (up to 8 now ?!?)

I also have a 60 cm Betty Foy 9x1 with Bullmoose Boscos that can go.
Hammered Honjo fenders and a gorgeous NOS Spidel crank.

I am "in training" for the Cross Florida ride April 1 & 2 ( 170 miles in
two days) so I might be a little slow responding to emails & posting
pictures for the next couple weeks if anyone is interested. Rode my
Bombadil last year, it will be the orange Sam this year.

I also have a Trek Belleville (converted to 8 speed hub), late 70s (maybe
early 80s) Schwinn SuperSport (fillet brazed chrome-moly frame), Bike
Friday Metro, Scott SUB 10 (8 speed belt drive, disc brakes, SP dynohub)
and a Flying Pigeon that aren't going to make the cut. The Flying Pigeon
is a two-speed kickback coaster brake with moustache bars (a Path Racer
style bike), but includes the rod brakes & handlebars, fenders and chain
case.

I have two 1973 P-15 Paramounts, one is too big for me (~24" frame) but has
original paint, decals and components and I am kind of on the fence about
it. The smaller one I bought new at the Schwinn dealer in 75 after my
Gitane TdF was hit by a car (actually a police car). Lots of miles and
components swaps (Campagnolo Hi-lo hubs, Rally rear derailleur) and a
couple of paint jobs. Keeping that one - need to sent it to Waterford for a
repaint & decals. Love those chromed lugs.

I have two early seventies Gitane Tour de Frances, one is too small (~20"
frame), it is going but I may have a friend that is interested already. The
other one is NOS - only ridden once by me with another set of wheels - the
original sew-up rims have never seen glue. Kind of a museum piece and a
keeper for now.

I also have an odd full nickel plated "Resurrectio" lugged single speed
with generator front hub and 650b's. probably about 53 cm.

Not sure about my SE bikes F@e.

I am in Florida and some of these would not be worth shipping, but if you
are in Florida I might deliver.

Laing

Ratio: 14-16-18-21-24-28" Mate that with a 7 or 8 speed index

mostly modern bike.

Couple that cassette up with the proper choice of chain rings,
and you can really make a pretty nice drive train. Here's a
configuration that would tick all of my boxes:

50/34/24 700x32 6 spd 14-28

75.049.536.0

56.337.127.0
48.231.823.1

And also note that thanks to the narrow hub and the flexible
modern chain you could use all six of the sprockets with the big
ring and have no cross-chain angularity issues. Given my basic
parameters (high <= 100 gear inches, low on the middle ring ~
32", low on the granny ~ 20-23") this is right there. No monster
cliffs to fall off or struggle to climb up, no zigzagging back
and forth trying to eke out reasonable spacing and no major
compromises on range either. Not shabby at all. Actually, this
is the first time I've calculated a 34/50 that made any sense to me!

2017-03-22 Thread Conway Bennett
Just emailed Grant. Gonna replace my wife's 53 cm caseroll with the bubbe
which will fit me too so it'll see more use than the salsa does. It'll make a
great kid hauler too, someday.

It's supposed to be a different color so maybe we can influence that decision.
I for instance, need an orange bike but always liked that frosty root beer
brown that ended up on a AHH way back when.

[RBW] Re: Anything unusual needed for an Appaloosa build?

2017-03-22 Thread Bob Lovejoy
Thanks Ed, much appreciated. When I lived in Denver, finding M4/M5/M6
bolts, especially stainless, were fairly easy to find. That is not
necessarily true now that I live in a smaller midwest town. I thought the
other day that my bike building days will end, not when I run out of parts,
but when I run out of bolts, screws and spacers!

I think the Appaloosa will start off without fenders, with the idea of
exploring local dirt and gravel roads, but there is more rain here than in
Colorado so fenders may come later. Part of that answer will be decided by
what size tires feel right on the bike.

Thanks for the help and the experience with the mount points.

Bob

[RBW] Re: Anything unusual needed for an Appaloosa build?

2017-03-22 Thread Ed Carolipio
For a canti build, someone mentioned the hangers already but I found I
needed to adjust the headset spacers (1" silver, 2.5mm or 5mm thick, having
a handful is nice) to accommodate the front hanger since I ran out of fork
using the spacer included with the frame. I also snapped the seat post bolt
troubleshooting slippage so I recommend having some spare M6x25mm bolts
(20mm may be long enough) with matching lock nuts handy.

There are three potential mount points for the rear rack: two are M6 (as
others have pointed out), with the third, rearmost one as M5. Most folks
run a fender on the M5 mount, but I won't judge you if you rebel against
convention. Of the two M6 mount points, if you choose the dropout one, I
suggest getting in the fenders in at the same time: the two mount points
are close enough that there may be minor gymnastics involved to get all of
that to work together. I opted for the seat stay mount, and that has worked
well for me and my commuter bags/panniers plus no issues with heel strike.

Note that "thick washer/spacer" (I think they're 2.5mm) which Riv sells are
for M5 bolts, so I couldn't use them to space out the rear rack whilst
opting for the M6 mounts.

I think you can key off the 55m Cheviut for sizing, seat tube is within a half

pretty fat tires, a fair bit fatter than the Chev.

[RBW] Re: The next Velo Lumino product: rear fender reinforcement plate

2017-03-22 Thread Mike K.
Anton,
What is the purpose of the center hole? The outside holes, I assume, attach
to the fender. Are there attachments beneath brake bridges for fender
mounting? If so, I probably could have saved myself some trouble over the
years.

Follow-up question, do these only work with center-pull/canti brakes? My
Ram is sidepull and I could see this being handy but not feasible due to
the distance between the brake bridge and the fender. But maybe it's not as
far apart as I think it is...

Re: [RBW] The next Velo Lumino product: rear fender reinforcement plate

2017-03-22 Thread Jay Fichialos
Eric,

I created a custom reinforcement plate for my daughters Jack Taylor using a
stock 1" aluminum strap that can be found at most local hardware stores.
You simply trace out the shape you want, cut with a hacksaw or scroll saw,
then file and and polish. I used a round file to give it a little camber on
the bottom and allow it to sit evenly on the fender, and a flat file to
taper the edges and overall thin it out. Various grits of sand paper and
Simichrome brought it to a mirror shine.

I wanted one a little longer/narrower than those available at the time, I'm
happy with how it turned out.
Takes a little time but well worth the effort.

As a side note Anton does great work and I'm sure the plates he's created
are top-notch. He modernized the lights on the little Jack, and they work
fantastic!

Re: [RBW] The next Velo Lumino product: rear fender reinforcement plate

2017-03-22 Thread Eric Norris
The one on my Singer just stays in place boy itself. It’s sandwiched between
the brake bridge and the fender, with a leather washer between the
reinforcement and the bridge. It is contoured to match the fender, so perhaps
that helps.

This photo shows a Singer with the reinforcer, but with some cloth tape added
at the ends: DSC_4851.jpg

[RBW] Re: Anything unusual needed for an Appaloosa build?

2017-03-22 Thread Bob Lovejoy
Thanks Joe...

I do remember you mentioning the 6 vs 5mm difference when you were doing
your build. Good thing to remember, so thanks.

I did call Riv the other day to ask about BB's and seatposts. Rich said he
thought they came with 111mm BB's. He also told me that the Appa's use
26.8 seatposts, so out went my stash of 27.2's. I know a post comes with
the frame, and it is probably just fine(!), but I am always looking at
options. One thing I could not decide on from pictures, and it's
impossible to know until I try it out or better study the numbers, but does
a 250mm length seatpost work or does it need to be longer (300, 350)? We
shall see and as long as I have something that works, that's 98% of it.

I had not planned on buying a new bike but I just could not resist...
strike when the right color and bike shows up!

Bob

Eric - looking at the photo I can see why you don't want the extra holes.
But how do you keep it from shifting or turning sideways a bit from
vibration, etc. without the bolts? Contact cement? Or is the
diamond-shaped plate beveled in such a way that it conforms to the
curvature of the fender, which keeps it in place? If the latter, how would
you create something like that? Seems like you'd need a die or something
to shape it.

[RBW] Errandonnee 2017 - any other Riv Riders onboard?

2017-03-22 Thread Cyclofiend Jim
Chasing Mailboxes' recent announcement of the Errandonnee 2017 caught me
just right, so I ended up crafting a quick Control Card and joining in.
Saw a few familiar names crop up in the reports to date, but was wondering
if there were any other RBW-riders engaging in this low-key, errand-based
Ran(or Run)donnee.

If you have no idea what I'm talking about, check out the description here:

https://chasingmailboxes.com/2017/03/16/the-errandonnee-2017-out-like-a-lion/

Although the Earth-based requirement may preclude some from taking part,
the barrier to entry is pretty darned low, and the benefits deeply felt.
Plus, you can even wait until the last day to start. Which is good for
those slackers onboard.

Since my cyclofiend blog is kinda dusty, I just was throwing images up on
my Instagram & twitter feeds:

https://twitter.com/cyclofiend

and of course on the FB Errandonnee page -

Look for the #errandonnee and hope to see you on the virtual route!

[RBW] New Batch of Rosco Mixtes - Maybe

2017-03-22 Thread Charlie R

I received a Rivendell email yesterday about another possible batch of the
Rosco sort of mountain mixte. Sounds like the same as the last batch with
maybe a different color. Cost is estimated to be $800 without bottom
bracket, headset or seatpost. Grant said he needs a commitment for 8 and
money will necessary at the end of June.

I'm on the list...

Re: [RBW] The next Velo Lumino product: rear fender reinforcement plate

2017-03-22 Thread Anton Tutter
Hi Eric,

I order all my stock pre-cut and drilled and then polished. I'd have to do
a special run of a single-hole version, and I have to order quite a few to
make them cost-effective.

Aside from aesthetics, what is the practical advantage, if any, to having
as single hole? I would think it would act less as a strain relief in this
way. It would still "cradle" the fender, but I would imagine its overall
net benefit is less.

If you're good with tin-snips and have a spare fender you can use as a
donor, you could cut a few out and polish them.

[RBW] Anything unusual needed for an Appaloosa build?

2017-03-22 Thread Bob Lovejoy
While waiting for e-mails with news of frame shipments and delivery dates,
I am putting together pieces and parts for building up a 58cm Appaloosa. I
think I have or am collecting most things but it dawned on me that I might
need the extra long rear derailleur cable that Riv sells, maybe other
things that I have not thought about. I know I will need two chains for
instance, or at least 1.x chains for the long chainstays.

Is there anything else that anyone has run into on an Appaloosa or Clem
build that surprised them? I am thinking not but thought it worth asking.

Anyway, all help appreciated!

[RBW] Re: Transporting a fendered tandem

2017-03-22 Thread Julian Westerhout
Daniel,

I just looked at the video on the Rockymounts website -- it appears that
the tandem is actually higher than on the Yakima. The Yakima holds the
tandem at the stoker's bottom bracket, the Rockymounts holds the rear wheel
in a tray. It appears to me that this makes the bike higher, which should
make it possible for a fendered bike to fit well.

I'd give them a call or email and ask.

[RBW] Re: Transporting a fendered tandem

2017-03-22 Thread Julian Westerhout
Daniel,

I'm not sure about the Rockymounts R4, but with the Yakima Sidewinder and
standard length SKS fenders it worked fine. I've attached a photo from 2011
of our Trek tandem on the roof of our Focus sedan. These days we have a
Subaru Forester and a Bilenky with S couplers, so the bike rides inside.

I think the key is the height of the fork mount. Is it possible to try the
rack at a shop before buying?

Hey Congrats! And good choice!

I'm picking up my 51cm Green Appaloosa frame this Saturday. Can't wait to
build it.

[RBW] Re: Wide drops for loaded Hunqapillar

2017-03-22 Thread Philip Kim
Drew,

I went from jones loop bar (which were a bit too wide for me) to the Map
ahearne bars (which were not "aero" enough on long rides) to RM-03s on my
Hunq. The RM-03 need to be tilted up a bit, and best with a dirt drop stem
up high. I had the 58cm handlebars, with 80mm dirt drop stem on my 48cm
Hunq. I really liked the bars for pavement to dirt rides. The hoods are a
bit more "aero" and comfy, but a bit more upright. And when the wind hits
the drops are super comfy. You can ride on the hoods like modern ergo with
your hands more around the brake lever, and you can also ride with your
hands and palms fully splayed out resting on the ramps.

Here is a pic of my Hunq with dirt drops:

Recommend getting the IRD power ratchet brake levers

or
gevenalle type shifters. The drops flare out a bit too far to make bar end
shifting very convenient. Brake is super easy from the drops as well as
hoods. Bars rode great on the pavement and dirt, and fun for technical, but
for really technical, i didn't like my body leaning forward that much,
which is the compromise for all dirt drop bars really.

hope that helps

I miss ebikestop.com, they were selling the XD600 for $88 for the longest
time. I got 2 of them during that timeperiod.

I guess they weren't making enough profit, they closed.

Thanks! I've been thinking about how this frame is a ton of bang for the buck.
Does it take a 27.2mm seatpost? These are made in Taiwan, right?

A Cheviot or Clem L would be fine for the riding you want to do. There are
many handlebars to choose from that are not too upright. What are you
riding now?

[RBW] Transporting a fendered tandem

2017-03-22 Thread Daniel Jackson
Curious what folks recommend for carrying a fendered tandem on a car.

Considering the rocky Mounts R4 rack but am concerned that the front fender
will preclude mounting. Is this often the case with roof racks like these? I've
always used hitch racks with bikes so have no experience with racks up top.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Best,
D.
