[RBW] tires for clem

2017-05-07 Thread Davey Two Shoes
Hi everyone
I' love my clem (riv stock build) but I'd like to upgrade the tires from
the 1.75 kendas to something bigger and more supple. In a perfect world
Compass would make a 27.5 x 2.3 tire but thats not happening. What are some
of you clem riders running?
Thanks
Dave

2017-05-07 Thread Joe Bernard
I think time and quantity have knocked the prices down a bit. RBW has been
around for 23 years now and have sold a lot of frames. Anybody who wants one
can find one used now, and they expect a significant discount over the new
ones.

Pictures here: https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B6fp2AmAnZgmLUJTRnJ5NXJGSFE

1. Tektro R556 brakes, bike worth, used, great shape, reasonable pad left,
recessed nut, nut on front is currently a sheldon fender nut, which I hope
to keep, but if I can't find a regular nut, you get the sheldon fender nut
- $30 shipped

2. Tektro Novela disc brake calipers and levers - rode these briefly as the
stock brakes on a Breezer Beltway - bikes worth - $30 shipped

3. Swift Industries canvas rolltop panniers, brown and burgundy with high
wheeler graphic - $100 shipped

4. Rivendell Silver shifters on bar end pods - $45 shipped

5. Shimano Deore trigger shifters, 3x9 - $10 shipped

6. Campy Centaur FD - $15 shipped

7. Large Bike Burrito tool roll, brown outside, orange inside - $20 shipped

8. big pedals, I think these are sunlite - $10 shipped

9. Rivendell half mitts - these are weird, never used, kicked around my
workshop for a few years - $10 shipped.

10. 60cm Sam Hillborne, frame/fork/headset - I've advertised this here

parts off for a different build. I'm the second owner, it's got its share

Re: [RBW] Re: The Hubbuhubbuhs are here!

2017-05-07 Thread Steve Palincsar
I agree. And then, there's the issue of the cable having to match the
fitting on the actuation device. At the brake, of course, it's held by
a pinch bolt, but at the lever it's a made-on end that fits a receptacle
in the lever. But the important thing is, this has been done since time
immemorial with no problems.

On 05/07/2017 02:55 PM, René Sterental wrote:
As I've been doing some research on the subject, it's apparent that
this is just how people have been setting up their drag brakes
forever, at least as far back as I've been able to research, which is
several decades. Remember, it's not that you have to press hard to
stop the bike, you just need to pull the brake lever to get some
friction on the disc. Drum brakes which I think need a higher level of
force compared to large disc brake rotors have been set up this way
with no adverse issues.

Re: [RBW] Re: The Hubbuhubbuhs are here!

2017-05-07 Thread Julian Westerhout
Daniel,

Are you concerned about the shifter cable not being robust enough, or are
you concerned about the use of a shift lever instead of a brake lever
(possible cable pull length)?

If the former, I do not think it's an issue, as a drag brake is not
subjected to the repeated hard forces of regular brakes -- the intent of
the drag brake is to scrub speed, not stop you in a hurry (and is not used
that often, in my experience). If the latter, in my experience you'll have
plenty of cable pull from a shifter.

If something else is worrying you, what is it?

every orange frame I see has black parts. It was the same when I saw the first
silver frame with tan saddle and handlebar leather tape. Which is why my custom
is configured that way.

This is certainly an awesome project, and these frames are so cool!

[RBW] On rear racks for the Hubbuhubbuh...

2017-05-07 Thread René Sterental
I just realized that none of my racks, possibly with the exception of the
R14 will fit on my Hubbuhubbuh due to its disc brake. I did a quick search
online, and found what I consider ugly black disc compatible rear racks,
with the exception of the Tubus Disco Rear Rack, which can be found in
silver in the UK. However, I can't tell if it's the version that is painted
in silver and has a coating on top, which I dislike, or true silver metal
like the Tubus Nova (unlikely because that one is stainless steel) or
chromoly like the Nitto racks.

I have no urgent need for a rear rack right away, and similar to what Bill
did, was planning on installing the Nitto Mini F32 so I can add a basket or
just a small front bag, plus the Tubus Nova lowriders, where I can load
front/small panniers. Will need to check how the handling is affected, if
at all.

As stated, for the type of riding I'll be doing initially, with my wife,
children and friends, I won't need to carry a lot, and I plan on having
Carradice roll bags on each handlebar plus a Barley saddlebag, all
matching, of course... :-)

Anyway, this might be a consideration/concern for those of you getting
Hubbuhubbuhs and are planning to run the disc drag brake and want a silver
rack. There are plenty of black racks available with different pros and
cons, it's just that I don't like much like them.

Will let you know if the R14 fits, which would allow me to swap the Burley
for the large Sackville Saddlebag as necessary.

Re: [RBW] Re: The Hubbuhubbuhs are here!

2017-05-07 Thread René Sterental
As I've been doing some research on the subject, it's apparent that this is
just how people have been setting up their drag brakes forever, at least as
far back as I've been able to research, which is several decades. Remember,
it's not that you have to press hard to stop the bike, you just need to
pull the brake lever to get some friction on the disc. Drum brakes which I
think need a higher level of force compared to large disc brake rotors have
been set up this way with no adverse issues.

Perhaps someone else knows more?Fed

Kojaks flat less than any other tires I have. I’m big (215 pounds) and ride
over bad pavement. I get very few flats with the Kojaks. I get a few more
flats with the Barlow Pass and Stampedes on my other bikes. The Compass tires
are still great tires, fun and fast to ride, but do seem to flat a bit more.
Not a big deal.

They are nice tires, and if I did't have the 559 Compass Elk Pass
available, I'd be using the 559 X 1.35" version on the 2003. (I use the 406
bsd version on the Hon Solo.) They are one of the very few tires I've used
that roll *pretty* well, yet that can be ridden here in goatheadland
without sealant.

Nice work Rene!!! Your HuaHubba looks like it'll be a ton of fun!

Mark, you are so right, it is a lot of fun. My youngest suggested that we
go ride again this morning, and so we went for another couple of miles. We
saw some wild turkeys not twenty yards off in a field. I do feel a little
sorry for the girls when we are going uphill. They are having to stand to
pedal up the bigger hills, where I just comfortably shift to a lower gear.
Then while going downhill, if not for riding the brakes, I would pass them
coasting while they pedal hard. Maybe I should repack their wheel
bearings! Still, what's all that youthful energy for, if not to spend it
pedaling furiously.

[RBW] Tires for Joe Appaloosa

2017-05-07 Thread Stuart Lovinggood
I ride Maxxis Torch, 700x53. They are fat and provide lots of squish at 120tpi.
Could even work with B65 fenders. Have been proving themselves to be rather
prone to flats, however. Little to no flat protection if something works its
way between the treads.

Re: [RBW] Re: seeking Rivendell Saluki reviews...and maybe a lead

2017-05-07 Thread Deacon Patrick
Ha! Isn't it amazing how different the bikes feel? I was also surprised by
the difference between my Hunqapiller and Quickbeam, both unloaded. I've
settled into a pattern of always leaving my panniers on the Hunqapillar, so
the difference "unloaded" is even greater. Yet the difference in time to a
destination in negligible in any real world terms. If I meet someone at the
trail head 10 miles away, I know it takes me 90 minutes on either bike, so
I allow 1:45 for a bit of a cushion. The primary difference isn't actual
speed, it's the ride feel and experience.

Love the color! We will have lilacs blooming here in about 3 weeks, so
you'd fit right in! Ride with wild abandon!

With abandon,
Patrick

2017-05-07 Thread Matt Beecher
I've gotten out for a few rides already, but hope to go on a longer one
today. So far, I am shocked at how much lighter the Saluki is over my
Atlantis. While weight isn't a terribly significant factor for me, I
expected them to be the same. It is nice to have lighter bikes when I have
to carry them up and out of my basement.

In terms of comfort, I would say the Saluki has been a bit more
comfortable, but it also has better quality tires, which likely contributes
significantly.

Overall, I am very happy with the Saluki and would gladly recommend them.

Cheers,
Matt

Such a perfect looking bike... well done! Artistically and expertly
done

Speaking of, not that I am an expert, I concur on the choice of the older
XTR v-brakes. I cobbled together an electric cargo bike, a standard level
Yuba Mundo, one without disc brakes standard, and the shop I was working
with highly recommended the XTR's - and they were absolutely right. Even
with the weight of the Yuba, I have never doubted the brakes.

Anyway, it brought a smile here to see your new bike...

It is easy to see great fun in your future!
