No, 65mm wide fenders don't fit between the fork blades or seatstays, so I
used 60mm wide SKS - I suppose they're called B60, though I no longer have
the packaging for them.

In 700c, there's always the Resist Nomad. The Nomad 28 is the best of the
lot, but the 35s are fairly close behind (The Nomad 28s are what switched
gravel riding from a thing I had to do to finish brevets into a complete
joy. They're a bit rougher riding than a Confrerie or Pari-Moto because
they're narrower, but they're marvellously stable on all of the gravelled
forest roads and farm roads I've ridden them on. Sadly, Resist doesn't
seem to be interested in producing a 27.5 version of the Nomad 28.)

David, I realize Compass isn't for everyone, but what has you scanning
about? As Reed mentions, there are decent tires at lower price points, but
for what you're describing Compass' offerings are quintessential. The main
trick with them (and it's not much of one) is to dial in the pressure.
Enough to avoid pinch flats for whatever terrain I ride, but not much more
than that and I'm happy as a clam.

[RBW] Question: Quickbeam With Axle Nuts

I have a two speed setup with one chain length. So the bolts are ideal because
I only loosen the drive side to allow slipping the chain from the 35x19 to the
38x16. The left side staying fixed keeps the wheel position perfecto.

Depends on your goals. If you want something less expensive there's the
good old Panaracer Paselas, but they're only cheaper, not better. (Though
they're still pretty good.)

If you want the best, that's Compass these days.

You can have the best of both worlds and get a QR axle for your Phil hub.
That's what I have (F and R) on my '99 Joe Starck. It does make gear
shifting a wee bit easier, particularly (for me) in adjusting chain
tension, but as the other Patrick said, using a wrench isn't hard either.

And since fixed/ss riding is meant to be fixed/ss, one ought to be somewhat
furtive and shamefaced when shifting, anyway.

FWIW, I also have a QR rear axle on the '-3 Curt, but on this one, instead
of a cogs on either side of the flip flop hub, I use a 17/19 Dingle, and
with the QR shifting is even easier. I don't use the 19 much, though.

Let us see photos and tell us about your gearing, please.

times.

I won't give up riding though and I'll just focus on what I feel
comfortable with for now and work up

I hope this driver has the book thrown at him because it sounds more like

So, it wants to go back to being a road bike, but has moved out of the
city near gravel/dirt trails and wants to get some riding time in.
I heard it talking about wanting to wear some 700x35 Panaracer Gravel
King SK's. It feels comfortable wearing up to actual 38mm 700c tires.

What tires would you recommend to the Redwood in its ongoing identity
 crisis?
 I'll pass along the info.

[RBW] Re: Riv Redwood Identity Crisis. Tire recommendations needed.

Barlow Pass IS a gravel tire, and top of the heap at that. In my experience
(Clement MSO, Barlow Pass), the Barlow Pass grip at least as well as the
Clement and are far smoother and quieter. Hands down, they are the top of
the 'gravel' category in this width for me.

With abandon,

Re: [RBW] Riv Redwood Identity Crisis. Tire recommendations needed.

2017-05-12 Thread Patrick Moore
John Bratton on the boblist is selling an almost new pair of Barlow Passes,
in case you've not seen his post:

John Bratton

[BOB] FS: Compass Barlow Pass EL (700c x 38mm), tan sidewall, $140/pair
shipping in CONUS

Hi folks- Mighty fine tires, but they're on a bike I don't ride much, so it
would be better if somebody rides them! As the title says, these are the
extralight model, and with tan sidewalls, price per pair. Note that these
are not the ones that *just* came out that are slightly wider and tubeless
compatible. These do have the Compass herringbone tread, though. They've
been ridden fewer than 50 miles- probably fewer than 25!

Re: [RBW] Leah's Bicycle Bus! (and question)

2017-05-12 Thread LeahFoy
Ryan, this is AWFUL. I'm not surprised this happened to you in a school zone -
parents are distracted and rushed and just generally at their worst in school
zones. It's a battlefield out there. I think that's why you see so many
So-and-So-Memorial crossings by schools. Blood will run in the streets
eventually as long as we have cars swirling around school zones. A compressed
L1 vertebra is really something; so sorry this happened to you. Your thoughts
on a GoPro are my thoughts, too - I wish I'd had one! I don't even know how
they work or how to use one, but sure seems like it would have been useful
yesterday.

I found one of the kids who was there on that sidewalk after school. The kid
was really hesitant to give me any information (as he well should be) said he
didn't know his mom's cell phone number, has no phone of his own but was
willing to give up "my mom's house phone." Then he promptly told me he'd be
really hard to make contact with. Sigh. I am also 99% sure he has special needs
and am not sure how he will be at recalling and repeating events. I emailed the
number to the officer and while I was at it, asked if he was ever able to make
contact with the driver. Here is his emailed response: " Yes I was able to
track down the driver. I issued him multiple citations for the violations. I
spoke to him at length about your concerns and the safety of the public. He
will have a future court date. Thanks."

I feel happy that the driver has been tracked down and dressed down, but not
happy that he wasn't arrested and his license revoked, though I kept my
opinions to myself. I also wonder what his side of the story is, but I dare not
ask the officer any more questions as I feel I may be dangerously close to
nagging, ha!

Monstercross is setup as a single speed, Thunder Burts, will soon have

The Redwood has had Barlow Pass tires on it before, and they do fit fine.
Those certainly are an option, I am curious about 'gravel' category tires

Re: [RBW] Leah's Bicycle Bus! (and question)

2017-05-12 Thread Ryan Fleming
well , ironically , my accident last fall was a hit and run in a school
zone (there are about 5 or 6 elementary - high schools within a 2 km radius)

I was in the bike lane (marked as a bike lane but can be shared) and as I
was just about to cross the intersection a car swerved , cut me off , hit
me and turned west. How the driver did not notice a 175lb body hit the
passenger side, I'll never know. Lots of witnesses but no plates recorded
unfortunately. I feel I was totally in the right but maybe a mirror would
have helped...or a go-pro. Bike was fine , I didn't lose consciousness or
anything but I ended up with a compressed L1 vertebra. Had to hang up the
bike for 6 weeks of really superb fall weather. I'm not lying awake t
spinning revenge fantasies, but really? No matter who's right, a car is a
lethal weapon . Driver could have easily hit a kid...but a life is a life.
In my case, I was very lucky but this was my first car/bike collision in
about 40 years. Since I've resumed riding I'm quite a bit more nervous
around cars than I was before and I was never totally blase about mixing it
in with cars at the best of times.

Geez...stay safe out there, kids

[RBW] Re: O/T pretty drivetrain

2017-05-12 Thread Ron Mc
Thanks again friends, Rich, George, Deac, Ryan, WETH and Rene.
George, I'm also a shooter, so I appreciate the analogy.
Hard-headedness is part of it, and I guess it shows if you do the math and
throw money at it, anything works.
Here are the two hottest decals left on the frame - I'm always looking down
at the Reg Harris decal.

A close-up of the pretty Cyclo Super R/S shifter, and a close-up of the
chainguard clearance and mounting hardware

The chainguard is tight, but everything works and clears. In order to
shift to the big ring, the FD cage has to be tight against the inside of
the chainring, and clearing the low-Q crank arm requires perfect alignment
of the chainguard. The Simplex L-bracket lets you align the rear laterally
at the buttonhead into the stanoff, and vertical alignment is rotation at
the forward fastener. . On the front end of the guard, the Simplex band
clamp has nuts on each side of the rod end, which lets you align that end.
My photos are probably going to crash, because it won't let me add another
- we'll - I'll add another post that shows the Simplex front band clamp.
But on my first ride, I didn't have torque on the buttonheads, and the
chainguard came loose in the first two miles. However, I had my compliment
of loose tools from McMaster and was able to re-align the chainguard at a
park bench and finish the 20-mi smoke test ride. Since then, with proper
torque, it's all rock solid.

How do you have the BMC set up? Mine is great for trails wearing 700x45
knobbies. Personally, I would listen to the Redwood, put on some EL Barlows
and let it be a road bike.

[RBW] Riv Redwood Identity Crisis. Tire recommendations needed.

2017-05-12 Thread David Banzer
My Riv Redwood has been fickle over the past couple years. It wanted to be
a road bike, then it got the idea that it could fit 650b in the 46mm range.
It went back and forth between those personalities for awhile.
Lately it's been intimidated by other bikes that fit large volume tire
bikes it shares garage hooks with. Riv Clem and BMC Monstercross are making
it feel unsure of its large volume tire capacities.
So, it wants to go back to being a road bike, but has moved out of the city
near gravel/dirt trails and wants to get some riding time in.
I heard it talking about wanting to wear some 700x35 Panaracer Gravel King
SK's. It feels comfortable wearing up to actual 38mm 700c tires.

What tires would you recommend to the Redwood in its ongoing identity
crisis?
I'll pass along the info.

[RBW] Re: O/T pretty drivetrain

2017-05-12 Thread George Schick
The well known definition of the term "wildcatter" is one who attempts to
find oil by exploring in unknown and uncertain terrain. But there's
another definition - a gunny who fools around with and explores things like
muzzle velocity, etc. with different types of cartridges and barrel lengths
and rifling twists. The popular bench-rest cartridge 6mm PPC came from
such experimentation.

You, sir, are a bicycle "wildcatter" extraordinaire and my hat's off to you!

Re: [RBW] Leah's Bicycle Bus! (and question)

2017-05-12 Thread Patrick Moore
Right on! Glad you were safe, and I hope that the son of a bitch gets
slammed.

I live on a little access street that feeds south into one of ABQ's busiest
cross-river (E-W) arteries (Montano NW), just 1/4 mile east of one of the
city's busiest intersections (Coors and Montano NW). There is no legal way
for a walker or cyclist to cross to the south side of Montano to head east
toward the river bridge, the bosque, and the paved N-S trail. Traffic is
especially bad at rush hours.

Montano is 4 lanes, Coors 6. Montano is signed for 40 with traffic often at
55; Coors for 45 with traffic usually 60.

To legally get from the south end of my street, Winterhaven, across
Montano, legally, you have to do a big loop: through the shopping center to
the W of Winterhaven to Coors; light; south on Coors 1/4 mile to the very
busy intersection with 2 left/east turn lanes. Of course a walker or
cyclist can't do this

I'm experienced, I can make it across, but it's difficult; and it's what
has prevented my daughter from riding the 1 mile south to her school.

And on the SW corner of Montano and Coors, adjacent to the school, they're
going to add a shopping center to be completed in 2018.

The traffic division passed the buck; I'm going shortly to write my
Councilor. We'll see.

Thanks, All. Yes, I really don't know what you have to do to get arrested
around here. Hit and run, nearly mowing down school kids *on the sidewalk with
your CAR*, having an extensive record of prior incidents, 4 eyewitness accounts
that put your car at the scene...

I called my Mom (mistake) who had a fit and demanded I stop my foolhardy ways
of biking to get places. "But MOM, I was standing on the sidewalk! Not even on
my bike!" IF YOU WERE IN A CAR YOU'D HAVE A BETTER CHANCE, she said. I cannot
win.

Re: [RBW] Leah's Bicycle Bus! (and question)

2017-05-12 Thread 'Mark in Beacon' via RBW Owners Bunch
Frightening indeed. It does bring home the fact that we are not really in
control of a lot. I'm sure you have figured out a way to talk about this
with the kids that helps assuage their feelings while letting them know
that just because we can't eliminate all danger, we can still enjoy the
day; a version of get right back on the horse, I guess. I am grateful this
was not the tragedy it could have been.

[RBW] FS- Price drop. Shimano XL dynamo wheelset with E 6 light. $195 shipped.

2017-05-12 Thread alan lavine
Hello to all.
This wheelset and light set came on a bike bought on this forum and I have
no use for a dynamo light. It all works fine, tried it before
disconnecting.
Rims are Mavic A319 36H, hubs are smooth as silk, but there is some slight
damage to the drive side spokes on the rear wheel. Looks like the chain
got jammed between the spokes and the large cog. Not serious and these
wheels are bomb-proof but if you're picky about things you may want to
change them out.

The E 6 light (and extra bulbs) I also have an on/off switch but don't
know how to mount it, so I'll let you do that. Comes with a wire like
mounting bracket for the fork crown.
Dynamo is DH T660-3N.

Thanks,
Alan

Re: [RBW] Leah's Bicycle Bus! (and question)

2017-05-12 Thread ascpgh
Proof again that even a wide imagination cannot fathom the breadth of
incompetence possible from a local population. Even if you could list all
of the things that people might actually do, you'd fall short as this
individual demonstrated. Good work keeping all safe, both you and good
graces. Your situational awareness was better than a scroll of possible
thing people might do.

Keep up with the officer, he can't go knocking down the door if not in
unbroken pursuit of a high level of crime. I was T-boned in the driver's
door by a drunk who continued off (without headlights) and pursued by
responding state police. With personal information gleaned from a partial
plate number by a witness they had the drivers address and two officers
knew her and her favorite watering hole but could not act once the pursuit
was called off when they lost contact with the fleeing vehicle.
Implications for me were the total loss of my beloved and irreplaceable '96
5-speed Legacy wagon "work" car. If they had continued contact and been
able to find her and the vehicle, her insurance (which I overheard them
verify on the officers' radios) my remedy from her insurance would have
differed greatly from what did occur (absolutely nothing).

Law enforcement, or should I say the lawyering in anticipation of an
offender's defense, necessitates that a seemingly very winding path be
taken to justice. Be like Patrick on the ride to Rampart and keep the
course, mud in the figurative fenders and all.

[RBW] Re: Mudbeam Rides Rampart Reservoir

2017-05-12 Thread ascpgh
Fantastic.

Not so much the thrill of mud extruding from your fenders, it happens, but
how you've demonstrated underbiking in it's true environs!

I'm looking forward to seeing your fender stick (or a purloined rubber pan
scraper from the kitchen) tucked under your saddlebag flap in the future
moist travels.

2017-05-12 Thread Dennis Hogan
WTF!!! how can the police allow the driver to refuse to answer the door ?
The driver has committed at least several violations if not felonies.
I am so glad you and your son escaped any injury.
