Pretty much unimaginable to me, but the variety of people who manage it tells
me that, like most things in life, it's mental toughness that sees people
through. Certainly makes me feel like a wimp for some of my in-my-head whining
during those first long (80km) rides in the spring.

The occasional stupid mechanical failure is just another thing, just like
watching the clock, but being able to head out from my front door, go
across the Cascades, loop through a bunch of covered bridges, then come
ghosting back into Portland via country roads in the middle of the night
250 miles later is just a really pleasant way to spend 20 hours or so on
the road.

2017-07-25 Thread Steve Palincsar
If they can do it, it's not way too far for them. For me, 200 km is
about as far as I'm going to go. However, the structure - the Rules -
what some might call "the bureaucracy" add something special that goes
well beyond your ordinary garden variety century ride, even if the
distance is less than 100 miles.

BTW - even if your shifter cable breaks there's no reason to ride in a
50x12. You can use what cable is left to hold tension on the derailleur
to keep it in a large(r) sprocket by clamping it under the edge of a
water bottle cage. This way, instead of to high and way, way too high,
you can set a drivetrain so that you have a low gear and a cruising gear.

Re: [RBW] Movie "Brevet" on Vimeo

2017-07-25 Thread 'Tim' via RBW Owners Bunch
What Grant told Patrick is right. 30 miles is a long ride. I'm a randonneur and
I did PBP in 2015. It is a very, very difficult ride. The hills are absolutely
endless. I had a DNF at just over 1000km due to a sidewall cut on my Compass
extra light tires that couldn't be fixed. I used 2 boots and a paper euro, to
no avail. After 7 flats in around 35 miles, I had to bail. Sometimes I wonder
why I do it because, quite frankly, once a ride gets over 300km (186 miles)
there are some very, at least for me, "not fun" times. That is where
randonnesia (the art of forgetting those times when you want to throw the bike
in a ditch and call an Uber) comes in handy. But PBP is an incredible
experience. There's a filmmaker named Damon Peacock, from the UK, who has also
made at least 2 (2011 and 2015) PBP films that are very good. Maybe I'm only
plugging him because I was riding next to him on the first day and he put me in
the movie. Oh, and also, list member Eric Norris has several (many?) brevet
films.

Re: [RBW] Re: Terrific Writeup on the origins of Rivendell by Jan Heine

2017-07-25 Thread Patrick Moore
For the record, I wasn't being snide or trying to deprecate when I used the
word "cruisers" -- I think that the word fits; they're very nice and fun to
ride and sporty cruisers. And -- I'm 62 -- in 10 years, heck, I may be
saving pennies for a Clem or Joe or similar.

As to Joe's hypothesis: I dunno. I was a late member of the original
bobgroup, and an early member of Rivendell, and I recall the print space
devoted to what basically was old school steel road bikes and all the cool
retro steel/friction/leather/canvas/wool roadie kit; only, more practical
than your 1995 Eddy Merckx. And IIRC, they -- Riv Roads, Long Lows, related
by marriage Herons -- sold a lot more than All Rounders.

Aside: My first customized Road was built around the All Rounder idea -- I
asked Grant to make me a XO-1 that was more roady and was better than the
XO-1. (He said, "Oh, it'll be better!") So, 54 cm st c-c, 56.5 level tt
c-c, 73* parallel, toute Riv 753 except perhaps the fork may have been 531.
Tweaked geometry, road tubing, lugs, and fork. Now, with a level top tube,
I can very comfortably ride a 60 c-c. I told Grant, "I'll post this to the
boblist!!!" He said, "Don't you dare!" But the statute of limitations has
run out.

A very nice bike, tho' I had to get a custom Salsa upjutter to make it fit;
but fit it did. The current '99 and '03, though, are light years and
quantum levels and levels of being better than that first 1995 custom, even
though that was a huge improvement, for road use, over the '92 XO-1 (I
think that the XO-1 was a good idea that hadn't yet come to fruition;
fruition was the Atlantis.)

[RBW] Compass Elk Pass tires -- longevity

2017-07-25 Thread Patrick Moore
I finally, after 18 months, and a recent repeating puncture on the rear,
replaced the original Stan's-ified tubes with new tubes containing Orange
Seal.

The tires have 3353 miles on them, and the rear is perhaps 1/2, perhaps a
wee bit more, worn, while the front is 1/4 worn, if that. Pretty damned
good for tires that weigh about 175 grams and get ridden occasionally on
dirt and gravel! Jan really hit the best spot for ride and durability!

In other news: the F Fred that has been on the rear of my Matthew and on
the rear of the Fargo before it, has 2607 miles on it, and is a bit over
1/2 worn -- and this is a tire that, for its size, is even lighter than the
Elk Pass and gets a lot more rough ground. Also PDG!

[RBW] Re: WTB: Used 700c and 26 fat (non-knobby) tires and long reach caliper/centerpull brakes

2017-07-25 Thread Ash [who works to bike]
Austin,

No worries. Given how much folks in this group ride, I'm sure there enough
used tires to go around :)

Appaloosa is my first experience with fat tires (if would consider 47 and
50 as fat!). I'd have a hard time going back. Not just for comfort, but
also safety. There were two incidents recently that would have ended up in
a bad crash if not for the tires. One of them where a local trail goes
under a freeway. You go several yards downhill, cross the bride from under
and go up again. In order to make going up easier, I maintain the speed
while I'm under the bridge. On a sunny day, the contrast is too high for
my eyes to notice details on the trail under the bridge. This time there
was a thick layer of dried mud (2-3 days after the creek has flooded). My
Appaloosa with 47mm tire somehow cleared the dirt patch (it was scary
though, I had no control of the bike). If it was my road bike, I would
have likely ended up in the creek.

Now I advice all my friends to go fat. (I also have a tendency to ask them
to eat less carbs, so they become less fat themselves)

[RBW] Re: Terrific Writeup on the origins of Rivendell by Jan Heine

2017-07-25 Thread Craig Montgomery
Ordered mine in '96 and took possession in '97. Still my main squeeze
though I've put a low trail fork on it and converted to 650B.

[RBW] Re: WTB: Used 700c and 26 fat (non-knobby) tires and long reach caliper/centerpull brakes

2017-07-25 Thread Austin B
This is a cool idea. I've thoughts of making my Sam more offroady and
putting the fattest tires with some tread on it. Been reading a lot on the
forum & online about Soma Cazaderos, SimWorks Homage, Marathon Supremes,
etc. But I prefer to test it out a bit before investing $120+ in new tires.

Most curious about how well the Cazaderos ride. If anyone has an old pair
of 700x42 they're looking to toss or unload, let me know if I can make it
worth your while to box up and ship to me (of course I'll cover shipping
costs too). Or if you're in DC/Baltimore area, I might be able to meet up
with cash-in hand.

Though please give Ash first right of refusal since he started the thread
on this.

Thanks for the great photos and writeup, Erl. Looks like you had a
fantastic trip and stayed in some nice places. Can't wait to hear more
details from you! Steve

Re: [RBW] Crowd sourcing ideas for vintage parts for a new randonneuring rig (semi sort of WTB)

No, the change in shifter location should definitely prevent that kind
of confusion.

As to the actual functioning of these derailleurs, I have no opinion and
make no claims one way or the other. My issues -- having been a victim
of this in the past WRT SunTour front derailleurs -- lie solely with
negative transfer
.

All five of my bikes have standard-gauge tubing and all "plane" more
or less. I found that when I am climbing with hard efforts the flex in
the frame pulls hard enough on the shifting cables that the shifters
get tucked a little and sometimes end up slipping a gear. I tend to
tighten the shifters when that happens. The advantage of rapid rise in
this scenario (which happens every ride I do), is that the derailleur
will slip toward the lower gear, which is OK on a climb.

I would use all rapidrise except I find that it's noticeably harder
(though not hard) to shift friction on the downtube with rapidrise. On
every shift I tend to overshift and then trim it back.

While I still make mistakes with the RapidRise, they are minor and
don't bother me (decades riding pre-RapidRise made some habits).
But I really don't expect moving back and forth to be much of a
problem. (I make many more mistakes with the twist-shifter on my
Bike Friday.)
Cheers!

Ugh, I need an edit button. "Nice" near the end is "niche".
