[RBW] Re: Pedals and Cycling Shoes for Feet Shaped Feet

2018-06-17 Thread Matt
Patrick:

Great idea! I have a few pairs of Vivos and would love to try that
stiffening strategy. I have a neuroma in one of my feet, which means I can
really only do street shoes and pedals for 6-7 miles before things go
numb. Works fine for my commute, but not for going out all day. After a lot
of trial and error during a long recovery after surgery (these were the
days before barefoot shoes) I ended up with Sidi Mega MTBs and I could
finally go all day again. They're not as wide as the Vivos but they're
plenty wide for my feet not to complain. Haven't wanted to muck with the
setup—if it ain't broke—but will definitely try the Vivos + stiffeners on
my commuter and see how much I can get out it.

Re: [RBW] Testing and Learning with Sam Hillborne...unexpected results

2018-06-17 Thread Patrick Moore
Nice build, and interesting writeup. I can't say that I, either, find the
plant eye pleasing, but it is, so to speak, philosophically pleasing for
the reasons you describe. (The Sam is eye pleasing, for the record, despite
its second top tube.)

It's sad that so many such operations have been sold down the river, so to
speak, leaving so many people without constructive work -- just read
interesting essay by woman minister, of all people, regretting departure of
the manual work that her male forbears and their communities did, to their
and their communities' loss in, well, essentially virtue in the
Aristotelian and Matthew Crawfordian sense. Now we're left with much more
nebulous work which is generally much less enriching; what was her term?
Bullshit work or something non-complimentary (though possibly
complementary) like that.

[RBW] Testing and Learning with Sam Hillborne...unexpected results

2018-06-17 Thread Austin B.

I swapped the Cazaderos and Albastaches on my Sam and put it back into
stripped down pavement mode, with Compass Bon Jon’s and drop bars, largely
for the purpose testing a quill stem adapter + threadless stem for possible
use on a new 61cm Roadini (it’s orange!!) where I’ll be transferring
components from an existing bike.

I planned on doing about a 25 mile ride this morning, and ended up doing
42. Lots of scenery, mixed surfaces and hills. A ride of farms, forests,
small towns, and public parks; and of industry. One of the highlights of my
longer ride was actually riding by the Lehigh Cement plant in Union Bridge,
MD. It’s a massive tower which I presume processes mined stone into a
useful form for cement & concrete and is fed via a conveyor from a nearby
quarry. But more than the sight of it was the sound which could be heard
almost a mile away. Almost a smooth, soothing hum that signified everything
was working as it should. A sound you want to hear from a production
operation. If you’ve ever spent time in a factory or a printer, you’ll know
what I mean. If you hear variable loud, erratic, sounds, you know something
isn’t right. You want that hum.

Most might think a concrete plant is an unsightly thing, and admittedly, I
wouldn’t want this view & sound from my back yard. But to me, it’s also a
thing of beauty, and an achievement of mankind that has enabled the
construction of skyscrapers, bridges, road infrastructure, airport runways,
and made so much possible. People built that.

It reminded me when I stayed at a family member’s house for a week in a
small town which was close to an in-town train track. Every morning around
6am train would wake me—and the sound of the cars rolling across the track
was soothing, calming even. This, like the concrete plant, communicated
that economic activity was happening, and that people were at work doing
what they do. That all is well.

On this occasion today, I wouldn’t have experienced it but by bike. And I
also wouldn’t have seen it if my Sam didn’t inspire me to go further than I
planned. I thank Rivendell for enabling this experience to happen.

stuck on some old Mavic Open Sport rims, because I had em layin' around.
Paired 'em with some Pasela tires, fine fine, good tires, road velcro. The
other day I blew out the rear tire on a dirt road, and incidentally,
Velocity had just shipped me a random extra Quill rim. I'd built a few
wheels with Quills, and dug them. So I ordered another, ditched the
narrow, non-tubeless ready Mavics, and rebuilt the wheels using Sapim Force
spokes and Quill rims. White Industries rear hub, Schmidt front. Happy
days. I used our secret tubeless tape and a custom blend of Orange Seal
juice, and mounted some smooth 38mm Gravelking rubber. They sing! Much
faster feeling than the Paselas, meatier sidewall than a Compass. Shot
these pics with an old Jupiter lens in the back yard of Analog Cycles.

2018-06-17 Thread Jeremy Tavan
The Lems Primal are the most comfortable shoes I've ever worn (even more
comfortable, to me, than the Vivobarefoot shoes I wore for years). The
bottom isn't as thin and flexible as Vivo, but it's also not quite as stiff
as Patrick's looking for, I suspect. But at least it IS thick enough that I
don't feel the spikes in the pedals through them... I've been happy with
them for cycling purposes.

Lum, Lems will be introducing a non-slip sole (their current sole is horrible
on trails, rather nonsensical for a company in Boulder, CO. Sardonic grin.). I
may try them again once they have a descent sole. Though I like the Ra II’s,
they curve the big toe in too early and I’d prefer a bit more width. However,
since I am not running in them (which requires greater width for forefoot
splay), I can get away with a bit too narrow.

[RBW] Re: Bikepacking Kit

2018-06-17 Thread Deacon Patrick
Tony, aye. Still roasting with the Zen Roaster. We love it. I roast (3) rounded
1/4 cup scoops each morning, which seems to be the max the wee roaster can do.
That keeps the six of us in coffee for the next day. Free beans? What a deal!
Grin.

How long my usual bikepacking trip? I do a fair number of S24Os, S48Os, and
then a few where I aim for 8+ but usually they get truncated to 4 days or so by
various causes. The food I bring, though cold, is calorie and flavor and
satiation dense (quality fat and protein does that). Also, flavor variety in
different flavors of jerky or roast. Cold camping while on a low fat, high carb
diet would be obnoxious. Grin. Also, keep in mind that fat has 2x the calories
per oz. as carbs — very effecient fuel and tastes great too! Essentially the
jerkey/butter/creamcheese/cheese thing is a lazy and tastier way of pemmican,
which does get tiresome after a 4-5 days. Grin. Folks with memory may find the
jerkey thing tiresome sooner — chalk one up for a bludgeoned brain! Grin.

Keep in mind that I eat at home the morning I leave and the evening I return,
so I don’t carry food for those days. Thus, a 5 day trip, I’d carry 3 days of
food. (I carry a day or two extra just in case.)

Lum, Mighty Organic is what I’ve used so far. 100% grass fed and organic. 8g
per package, so well below the 20-25g for ketogenic (if I remember my numbers
correctly? I don’t track it). https://www.mightyorganic.com. We have a
dehydrator, but the logistics of running it (it’s loud and I don’t do well with
loud) mean We generally don’t make things with it anymore.

Re: [RBW] 58 Appaloosa Build (a tale of two bike frames)

2018-06-17 Thread hugh flynn
Ahh the joys of mail order.

I will note, that Rivendell does have a solid return/exchange policy, so i
probably could have attempted an exchange. However, I was the one who
selected the 55 based on my interpretation of the posted geometry charts
and the 55 did actually fit. My reasons for wanting the 58 were partially
visual and based on the fact that my build is more “road” specific than the
stated off road design for the bike. I should have taken that into account
when making my initial sizing estimate.

There are worse things than having two Appaloosas to work with :-)

Are you still zenroasting your beans? I'm a couple months in with my

a couple bags of green beans by co-workers and friends who are amused by my
coffee pursuits which is funny and cool.

Back to the actual thread topic, Patrick how long are your usual bike packing
trips? I see you mention 4 days food... That would be a long time without

maybe the being out of doors setting helps. My memories of backpacking in
highschool with no fire/limited stove use we're that meals were more about
calories than enjoyment.

Re: [RBW] 58 Appaloosa Build (a tale of two bike frames)

2018-06-17 Thread Dave Small
I've had a similar experience but in reverse. In 2012 I bought a 60cm
first-run Sam Hillborne that on paper fit me. My 88cm PBH was at the
bottom of the recommended range, but it was in the range. My PBH was also
at the *top* of the recommended range on the 56cm model. I could have gone
with either one but knew that Riv espoused going with the biggest frame
that'll fit, and took their recommendation. I liked the bike but couldn't
get myself to love it---it felt a little too big.

That presented a quandary for me: Was it the model, the size, or the "Riv
ride" in general that I didn't love? I eliminated the "Riv ride" as a
problem by buying a used Homer Hilsen on ebay; after just one 35-mile ride
I determined that if I'm ever forced to reduce my stable to one bike, the
Homer is a strong candidate to be that one. So it was down to model and
size as the two remaining variables. When Riv brought out their 58cm
single-top-tube version a few years ago, I was smack in the middle of the
PBH range and bought a complete bike. I loved it immediately.

The size was the issue. The only difference was 2cm in sizing and a couple
of minor tweaks to the geometry (front/center had become shorter, I think).
The contact points on the two builds were spaced about the same, but the
60cm Sam just *felt* a little too big while the 58cm Sam felt perfect. I
now don't buy Riv models for which I'm at the edges of 2 overlapping
ranges, and instead consider only those for which that I'm firmly planted
in the middle of a range.

Very nice build--that blue is gorgeous!

This might be one of the most roadish Joe builds I've seen. I've not seen
many run Barlow's or Drop Bars on them. Goes to show the versatility of
these frames.

Another option: Rather than keep the 55, you could sell the frame and use
the proceeds to pick up a second wheelset/cassette/tires and cockpit with
the Bullmoose + Brake levers to give you your offroad rig. You'd just need
to rewrap your drop bars so the shift cable isn't under the wrap so you can
easily move the barends between bars. Once you have it set up, it's 10
minutes to swap wheels/cockpit.

Bosco Bullmoose all the way, and they feel just right at that level. Still
needs grips, but I took it our for an early Father's Day ride and it was so
nice on our local rail trail.

2018-06-17 Thread Garth

I'd venture to guess those pads would be made by SwissStop . I mean
hey ... there are not that many pad manufacturers !

Re: [RBW] 58 Appaloosa Build (a tale of two bike frames)

2018-06-17 Thread hugh flynn
Thank you, and yeah, that blue is something.

My ‘99 Heron Road is silver, so I thought I’d try something else for the
Joe. Honestly, I wasn’t crazy about going with the blue at first...then I
saw it in person. It’s a liquid silver blue that just brings joy.
