[RBW] Wool at 100*+

2018-06-26 Thread Patrick Moore
It was 101 or so when I left for a church building committee meeting at
5:30 pm, wearing a nice merino Sugino jersey. Humidity was well below 10%,
probably close to 5%.

Soft merino, even if not particularly thin, works very well in such hot,
dry climates; as comfortable as the synthetics I have, though I daresay
these would be more comfortable when the humidity got much above 20%.

Patrick Moore, who took the long way in, and the shorter way home at 9:30
with an almost full moon.

FWIW.

[RBW] Re: Other annoying threads

2018-06-26 Thread jack loudon
I don't like threads where the poster asks a very general question like 'my
brakes squeal' but provides *zero* additional information. Helpful
responders then prompt the poster with pertinent questions, like 'what kind
of brakes', 'what conditions cause the squealing' etc. However the OP just
drops off the face of the earth, and *never* responds.

Jeff,

Thanks for posting the spreadsheet; that looks like a lot of work. Have you
looked at the Soma Highway 1 Bar? It doesn't flare, but it does have a
short reach and drop. I replaced the original Nitto bars on my old Santana
Noventa with Hwy 1 because of their short reach, 26mm clamp, and silver
finish.

[RBW] Other annoying threads

2018-06-26 Thread Bill Lindsay
My list of list-pet-peeves include:
-posts addressed directly to Rivendell Bicycle Works because the poster is too
shy to call them. Most annoying when they include phrases like “Grant, are you
listening?”
-for sale posts from email users followed by an entirely NEW THREAD saying the
thing for sale has sold
-posts made mostly or entirely of sentence fragments. Grammar? Ever studied?
Graduated? Thoughts?
-posts made like this is Facebook or twitter. Like a post that says only ‘LOL’,
or ‘???’ I guess I’m guilty with APPROVE posts, but I think that conveys a
significant idea at least.
-Bump posts to FS threads that say only ‘Bump’. Email viewers will only see an
email from you that says ‘Bump’. They won’t know what you are selling.
-subject lines that give no clue what the post is about. Like ‘WTH?’ or
‘information please’ or ‘help’.

Re: [RBW] Re: 53 cm LWB Atlantis test ride

2018-06-26 Thread hugh flynn
Semi-related. I've been riding a 58cm Appaloosa for a couple of weeks now
(and a 55 for a few weeks before that).

All I can add is that from your ride report, the catalog is correct. You're
description of handling and "cush" with the LWB Atalantis is remarkably
similar to my experience riding the Appaloosas over mixed terrain since
early May. The one thing I will add is that I find myself sitting and
spinning up hills more with my Appaloosa more than I do on shorter wheel
base bikes - but that's a non-scientific observation. Perhaps it's a result
of the overall balance of the longer bike, maybe it's something else, but
it's simply something I've noticed.

For those with concerns about LWB bikes...I'm not finding anything to be
concerned about. The plush ride is delightful, and I have yet to find any
drawback when compared to my SWB bikes (or even my MWB bikes).

Re: [RBW] Re: Dear Riv, please make a wider Noodle

2018-06-26 Thread Jeff Lesperance
Tony, I’ve been going through a journey that I’ve written up a bit on the
iBob list, looking for a 46cm bar as you’ve described. I’m not sure if
you’re a member of that group - I can provide more detail if you’re not,
but the short story is that I’ve not found anything with the same reach and
drop as a 46cm noodle, with flared drops. Trade-off is shorter reach and/or
drop - I’m currently trying out:

46cm Salsa Cowchipper
46cm Ritchey Venturemax
44cm Origin8 Gary Sweep OS

The Salsa has the shortest reach of the bunch - it was pretty comfortable
but lacks the extra hand position behind the hoods with such a short reach.
I’m now trying out the Venturemax.

I put together a google spreadsheet with a bunch of data on handlebars I
wanted to compare, it’s filtered at the moment for some specific bars, but
if you remove the filter you can compare a number of bar measurements;
