[RBW] Re: Wald 137 bag recommendations?

2018-07-17 Thread nick b
I ride with a Sackville Shopsack a lot. You can put shitloads in it and it
expands well. I keep double d-rings on it so it stays in well when being
ridden on decent roads and then I use a bungee net when I'm going to be
riding dirt. It's VERY expandable and secure. Maybe worth a look for
you. It meets all of your requirements but the outside compartments.
However, I usually end up strapping things between the net at the bag and
then keep a stem caddy on my bike for the rest. I've used other basket
bags and don't like them as much as that option.

What a great fun way to spend the day (and vacation). It's tough riding

Re: [RBW] Re: Billie Bar Double Up lever‽

2018-07-17 Thread Andrew Letton
I believe that aluminum bars that will take bar end shifters will also accept
bar end brakes.  Some will argue that 22.2mm aluminum bars that take bar end
shifters are such thin wall at the end that they may be too weak for bar end
brakes. Nitto is particularly conservative about strength of their
products...and I appreciate this!
However...
My personal datapoint on this is that I have heat-treated aluminum 58mm Bosco
bars (22.2mm OD) on my Bombadil, fitted with bar end and interrupter brake
levers. I ride it as a mountain bike and a fully loaded camping bike, and I've
had no problems in about 2 years of use. (Knock wood.)

No, but I suppose braking produces more torque than shifting, what with big
levers vs small levers, so shifting/Yes braking/no. Could be that it would be
fine, like a twelver on a Mark's rack, but is not to be endorsed for
liability's sake.

[RBW] Billie Bar Double Up lever‽

2018-07-17 Thread Kainalu V.
The Billie bars look like good candidates for doubling up on brake levers, with
reverse brake levers in the ends and interrupters up front. That would leave
you with a huge chunk of uninterrupted bar that's always within finger shot of
a lever. I did it once with albatross bars but didn't need that much lever
coverage, but those billies are hge! Looks dorky, yes., but no? Hope
somebody tries it out.

[RBW] Re: Joe Appaloosa, MIT Atlantis versus Jones SWB

2018-07-17 Thread Chris Birkenmaier
Jonathan, I am a big fan of the Ti bikes I own (Seven, Blacksheep and the
Jones). In all of these bikes I feel a smoothness when I ride that isn't
always present in others. I certainly like steel and have never owned a
carbon fiber, so that is my universe of experience in frame materials. I
think the Jones is well proportioned to me in reach and general set up so
that helps too. Just a combination of a lot of different factors that come
together in this particular bike that makes it a real treat for me to
ride. Sorry if that all sounds very vague.

2018-07-17 Thread Lester Lammers
The image has a bit of perspective distortion and the bars look a bit
weird. The fit is excellent. Billie bars with a 13cm Tallus gives me 3
usable hand positions. The Billie's have a lot of sweep and an appropriate
TT length and longish stem, IMHO, is needed to not feel cramped. With a
82.5 PBH I was at the top of the 50cm and bottom of the 53. The 53 is a
perfect fit and I have enough space between the TT and my 'junk'.I don't
plan to use this as a MTB. As others have said, the long chainstays are
most excellent.

VO Diagonale wheels, Nitto seat post, Berthoud Aspin saddle w/cutout, (got
it when Wall Bike was closing shop) Stem mounted shifters work well with
the Billie bars. Paul cantilevers and brake levers. Shimano
derailleurs.40/32 crank set...may go to a 43 outer, Soma Demi Porteur
front rack and Ergon grips coming, undecided on rear rack.

I like the Billie bars a lot and if I would have gone with a 50cm frame I
don't think they would have worked as well for me. Big smile overall.

[RBW] Joe Appaloosa, MIT Atlantis versus Jones SWB

2018-07-17 Thread T Cal
I have a relatively new Ti jones plus lwb diamond frame with truss fork and
rohloff hub. I already owned several rivs: QB, ram, Clem L, appa/mystery bike,
Sam Hilbourne. My Sam is setup as the most off-roadish of the five. To me, the
Jones rides quite different and has very different capabilities. It is more
versatile and at least as comfortable. The jones climbs anything and goes over
everything. In June I did a week+ mixed terrain backpacking trip in England.
The jones was fantastic. Any of my rivs would have worked less well - much less
well on some parts. I love the rivs, but the Jones, to me, is a different
animal.

[RBW] Re: Wald 137 bag recommendations?

2018-07-17 Thread Joe Bernard
Ian, your question was why most basket bags aren't designed with long handles.
Your solution for them works, but if I was designing a basket bag..no way José.
The trick is to offer a detachable long strap and let the buyer decide if they
want to use it. Making it a permanent part of the bag and hoping they don't
screw it up sounds like a liability nightmare.

Having ridden with cloth totes in a basket for many years I can say with
confidence neither visual nor reality has ever been a problem.

Plus, with a nice canvas rolltop, you would roll the handles right up!

2018-07-17 Thread Patch T
Again, thanks all for your replies.

I think I am mostly sold on the Outer Shell. It's pretty much a rando bag
fit for a basket, best of both worlds. I like the one-handed open/close
function. Also, seems there is a bit of an inner sleeve with a closure that
can expand some to accommodate the rare large load. Not as roomy as a
rolltop, though. Map case, external pocket, internal pockets. I love
pockets.

Stoker in training! In a very related note I've learned that a surly junk
strap makes an amazing quick bike lashing to stabilize/lock down this bike when
parked. Another use for the Jones loop bar - lashing point. And since our big
trip to weeks ago any time the tandem is out in the yard - whenever I'm doing
something else in the garage, Rebecca is trying to climb up the pedals to the
saddles. I'm going to take that as another indication of a successful trip.

Another trickle down benefit of the longer trip for me has been increased
confidence in the build and general bike handling. We've taken two fairly short
of the moment ~10 milers since the Leesburg trip. The bike was ready with no
fiddling and all three of us got right back in sync. Post Alexandria city
fireworks on 6 July we had quite the opportunity to do close quarters, crowded
pedestrians and cars everywhere at night riding home. Very slow speed
maneuvering, sudden stops and some creative steering all worked out fine. This
would have been challenging on single bikes but the HHH did just fine.

I recently picked up a stickpack used here. Good looking bag, first impression
is that it's smaller than I expected but well made as you'd expect.

I did some searching but couldn't find any archived Riv product description or
much discussion here. Anyone care to share a link? Also curious if any other
users have a suggestion for water bottles that for those side pickets.

Thanks,

[RBW] Re: Wald 137 bag recommendations?

2018-07-17 Thread ChrisB
Hi Patch

Another data point:

I've got the larger Wald basket on my bike; I'm totally sold on it for
versatility and ease of use. A bag that fits perfectly, has many colour
options and meets a lot of your criteria is the Patagonia Tormiro Pack. It
has two neatly designed external pockets that's are accessible when the bag
is flat in the basket and a laptop sleeve. Off the bike, it's a
bucket-style rucksack and kind of vintage-looking.

Often on discount plus it's Patagonia; well made and conscientious goods.
Just put a net over the top if you're bounding down single-track!

Best, Chris
