[RBW] Re: Not so permanent Basket + Rack

2018-08-31 Thread Bill Lindsay
OK, since nobody explained it, I managed to view the .gif video on my
phone. There's a clip wrapped around the top of the tombstone and a QR
clip permanently attached to the front face of the Wald basket. You
presumably insert the rack in place under the fixed tombstone clip, and
then lock it in place with the QR clip. I like it a lot as a diy-project.
If I were Clayton, I would similarly have little interest in trying to
manufacture it for others.

A theoretical 'run' of a product like this would be made for one model of
Wald basket to fit one model of front rack. A product made for just that
combination would still need some non-trivial installation effort on the
part of the end-user. If the basket sagged or bent at all in use, the QR
clippy part might need to be adjusted. I'd be nervous offering this product
to non-mechanically-inclined end users who don't have the mechanical
instincts to detect when it's getting loose and the risk of it popping
itself off is getting more likely. People building it themselves puts them
in a better position to take responsibility for themselves. If it's too
much trouble to make your own, then you probably don't really need it.

It's super clever, though. I "never" remove my baskets, so I'm good with
zipties

If that's the whole design, what holds the body of the rack down? If I

Thomas,

I use a jeweler’s screwdriver inserted into one of the four shallow holes on
the plastic cap. When the cap begins to release from the pedal, insert the tiny
slender blade between the cap and the pedal housing to remove.

If you place an order from Rivendell add some of the plastic caps for your
parts stash.

Side note: The non drive side pedal has a tendency to tighten up for me so
consequently doesn’t spin as freely as the drive side. Periodically I have to
adjust the lock nut to allow the pedal to spin properly. Still my favorite
pedal though.

grease tubes, and just input fresh grease and remove the old grease that
leaks out the back of the spindle (on the crank arm side of the pedal). It
works very well and is quick and easy. The hole can be patched up with
bees wax or just left alone.

[RBW] Re: Not so permanent Basket + Rack

2018-08-31 Thread Brad
On one of my bikes I like to switch back and forth between a basket and a
rando bag. I used zip ties for a long time, but it seemed wasteful to be
cutting them off every few weeks. One of the bikey Instagram accounts I
follow (I can't remember which one) showed someone attaching their rack by
weaving an Arno strap (which is the same Irish straps) between the rack and
the basket. The Arno straps are very solid and I carry heavy loads
sometimes) Now that I've been doing it for a while, I can install the
basket quickly. One caveat: I'm using a Haulin Colin platform rack, so
there's a lot of support for the basket.

Now I'm curious about the tool box buckle technique...

[RBW] Re: New(-to-me) Quickbeam

2018-08-31 Thread Philip Williamson
Congratulations on the child! And the Quickbeam. The Quickbeam may stay in
the house longer than the kid...
That's a great looking build. The shiny fenders over the Delta Cruisers is
a nice look, and complements the clean chainguard. Thanks for bringing
those PDW fender mounts to my attention, too. I have yet to cut the fender
stays on my green Quickbeam after... many years, and the PDW attachment
looks so clean. Might be just what I need to finish the bike.

Shame about the brakes. What kind are they? I would second the other
suggestions to check the cable drag (does the lever return snappily and
fully?), spring tension, symmetrical setup, etc. You might double-check
that the wheel is straight in the frame, but it would probably rub the
fenders if it wasn't.

John, you're right and I've lost my mind! Ghosts of previous shells that
needed pit zips any more have addled me. Only dropping the front zip has
been necessary to get all the venting needed (duh, that was the primary
attraction of Ventile to me).

Sorry for the confusion. It clearly has been warm enough that I've been
without my Braemar's use for some months.

Side note: Farmer's Almanac says it's going to be very cold and snowy here.

Re: [RBW] New(-to-me) Quickbeam

2018-08-31 Thread Joe Bernard
Tully, do your canti mounts have the 3 holes for anchoring the springs? I'm
thinking you're getting enough drag on the cable through the bends under the
tape and at the rear loop that the springs aren't overcoming it enough. Maybe
you can mount the rear springs to have more tension, then start adjusting from
there.
