[RBW] Roadini fendering at 32mm?

2019-05-13 Thread Paul G
Rivendell used to market their Roadeos with Jack Browns and SKS P45s
(Chromoplastics or Longboards) all the time. Perhaps they are no longer
comfortable with that combination and limit the use of fenders with 28mm wide
tires to protect themselves if a customer had a crash because something got
caught in the front fender and flipped the bike.

I've been running the combo for going on four years with no problems other than
a leaf getting caught in the front fender on occasion. But I'm careful to avoid
going over sticks and such. And they must be installed carefully with attention
to maximizing the available clearance. That means cramming the fender as high
as possible under the brake calipers. By the way, this renders the wide opening
of the R539 brakes useless as the fenders get in the way when opening them. I
have to let almost all the air out to remove a wheel past the calipers.

Remember that the SKS fenders have more clearance potential than metal fenders.
Honjos or similar styles may allow a 30mm at the most. Also, different people
have differing levels of what their comfortable with regarding fender/tire
clearance.

Cool! I love my King Cage/64ozKanteen; mostly because it makes an excellent

[RBW] Roadini fendering at 32mm?

2019-05-13 Thread Matt D
My 61 Roadini is set up with 17mm Alexrims G6000 rims, Panaracer Gravelking
32c tires (which run true to size), and Tektro R539 brakes. I'm headed to
merrie olde England in June with bicycle in tow and I'd like to prepare for
the rain that seems to go along with the island but I'm not sure I can fit
them.

My research has only turned up this - Paul Gong on a RBWOB facebook group
says:
*"I have a Roadeo which has the same designed-in clearances. I can just fit
Jack Browns and SKS P45 Longboards with careful installation. This was a
combo that Rivendell often featured on their website and Instagram. I'm
pretty certain metal fenders like VO and Honjo wouldn't fit with Jack
Browns. Their design and hardware require more clearance than Longboards."*

Jack Browns, of course, being 33.3mm. That makes me suspect that
Rivendell's limit of 28 with fenders might be a little conservative. I
don't intend to ride many loose surfaces or gravel so I'm not all too
worried about things getting caught under it. Is anyone else running
fenders above 28mm on their Roadini or Roadeo and if so, what do you
suggest I use?

[RBW] Many Things Cages with 64oz Klean Kanteen Bottles

2019-05-13 Thread 'Deacon Patrick' via RBW Owners Bunch
Beorn of the Gus Boots Willsen family is now outfitted with three King Cage
Many Things Cages (and one iris cage), bringing my frame carry water carrying
capacity to 3 x 64oz + 27oz = 219oz (6.2 liters). This is a challenge I've had
in the dry bits bikepacking, and since I'll be attempting (hopefully) some more
I am excited to be able to carry water low and central on my frame for the
longer stretches (I'll carry empty when not needed).

Test rode the Klean Kanteen 64oz. bottle on the lowest cage today and it rode
the whole way snug and silent. Andrew at King Cage said the 64oz works great
and also is the largest he would recommend. I used his universal support bolts
to augment the bottle bosses as needed, and add the Iris cage behind the seat
tube.

There's an easy fix for this problem.

MOVE TO NEW HAMPSHIRE!

Here in New Hampshire, even the guys in the pickup trucks jacked up an
extra foot with the AR-15 in the rear window gun rack are extremely polite.
When I occasionally go south to MA to ride with old friends I'm always
intimidated by the drivers.

Re: [RBW] Re: Plus Tires for GBW

2019-05-13 Thread 'Deacon Patrick' via RBW Owners Bunch
Update on the Nobby Nic plus: Wow. I'd calibrated their speed based on gearing
and feel to the Maxxis Ikon+ on dry trails, but my initial ride was on wet,
semi-muddy and mud collecting on the Nobby Nics, so when I thought the were
about on par or slightly ahead in terms of effort in the same gear, I was
selling them short. Today's ride was on dry trails, and Nobby Nic just glides
along, conforming to the terrain and not loosing speed. Smooth and delicious
and confident. Schwalbe has produced an amazing tire here, with flat protection
yet impressively supple. Amazing ride on all ways.

Re: [RBW] Re: Nitto M18 vs Mini Front for carrying a basket

2019-05-13 Thread hugh flynn
As a minor clarification, the direction is not to use baskets with M12 or
similar mini racks designed to support a front rando-style bag (which would
presumably also be supported by a decaleur).

I do not believe Nitto or anyone else has stated that baskets can not be
used with ANY Nitto front rack. The 34F or other full-sized front racks
should be fine with a basket.

[RBW] PSA 59CM Custom Riv on FC CL

2019-05-13 Thread Fullylugged
Funny how reactions differ. I bought a near NOS Waterford RS-12 off this list
with a prior owner name on the top tube, 'Doris Rodriguez". That just became
the bikes' name for me. "I think I'll take old Doris for a spin Dear." "Okay
Honey!" I love it. Btw, the '99 bike is essentially a Rivendell Long Low
with regular 753 tubing, not the heavy wall that RBW used. Even has the
extended HT. Waterford uses a simpler seat cluster arrangement which is not as
pretty as the RBW.
