[RBW] Re: FS - Tires, misc

2019-08-27 Thread Chris Balaschak
I'm sorry to say I did not measure the width when mounted. I will say based on
my experience, the Gravelking 38s were slightly wider than the Soma 38s. Both
were used on my Legolas, and the gravelkings were a tight fit.

They are great tires, but in the end I've preferred more narrow tires - 28s or
32s.

2019-08-27 Thread 'John Hawrylak' via RBW Owners Bunch
Andy

Great ride report, as a former native Pittsburgher, I enjoyed the photos.
2 questions:
Where was the 1st photo taken on the river at 1st light? I would say the
Mon at the old J Southside works, the bridge would be the Birmingham
(successor to the 22nd St).
Emerald View Park on Mt Wash. Wasn't this called Grandview Park, and the
photo left side shows the observation deck with a funny circular concrete
roof? The photo shows the new jail directly across the river and the park
south of the Liberty Tubes/Bridge.

Anyways, thanks for the memories. Glad the guy from Seattle enjoyed

[RBW] Re: FS - Tires, misc

2019-08-27 Thread Peter Adler
I've been curious about both these tires for several years, since they're
both in Panaracer's scary-light category (at 700x38, 320g for the Soma
Supple Vitesse and 360g for the Panaracer GravelKing Slick, compared to
350g-380g for the Panaracer-made 700x38 Compass/Rene Herse Barlow Pass).
But I don't think I have clearance for a real-world 38 mm tire on any of
the bikes I have in mind, so I've mostly paid attention to 700x35, which
don't often turn up used. I just lost another eBay auction for a pair of
35mm Bon Jon Passes yesterday :-( so let's get some more details on these;
maybe my size fears are misplaced.

Panaracer lists the GravelKing Plus as ERTRO 40-622; no way I can fit 40,
if that number is real. Did you measure the widths of these tires before
you took them off the wheels? How wide were they, once you'd run them for
awhile and they'd grown?

[RBW] Riv sighting, Pittsburgh

2019-08-27 Thread ascpgh
I rode Pedal Pittsburgh, the annual fundraising ride of our local advocacy
group, Bike Pittsburgh, Sunday on my trusty orange Rambouillet. I had three
bottles, two tail lights and a pair of toe straps (remember those?) to
carry my shell jacket and T-shirt since I couldn't make the pre event pick
up of my number and shirt.
https://photos.app.goo.gl/oTNX5PUQPK2n28DF7

I rode to the event from home at o' dark thirty at 51° and clear skies,
pre-sunscreened, jersey pockets full of stuff to account for crowded or
depleted refreshment stops. I took care of the admin stuff and had a half
hour to kill so I patronized a coffee vendor in a compact '60s era camping
trailer to warm my hands while I rolled my shell and T-shirt into a nice
shape to strap to my Brook's bag loops.
https://photos.app.goo.gl/GL7yC4RtMPhnp26B9

The start for the 62 mile group was 0700 and headed directly up Mount
Washington to Emerald View Park.
https://photos.app.goo.gl/T9emoZMpcHRbwZAR9

After a few miles of wandering around on the ridge the route dropped to the
Monongahela River and crossed into downtown where I heard someone say "nice
bike" on my left. He was riding a blue A. Sam Hilborn and I said "that
too".
https://photos.app.goo.gl/UMEDX7yQ9aYcAoP68

The rider, Hill, was from Seattle. He is retired and spends his summers
driving from city to city participating in similar events. He volunteered
Saturday in the final prep of the event in exchange for free participation.
He'd come from Detroit and a ride there most recently.

Together we chatted bikes, places ridden and headed into some big climbing,
distracted by conversation. Total climbing for the 62 miles was over 4000'
and we were plugging right along. Hill even commented that "we must piss
them off" regarding the two old guys on those heavy steel bikes banging up
the hills and me guiding him down the other sides with previous knowledge
of the roads and no unnecessary braking so we carried our inertia into the
next climb.
https://photos.app.goo.gl/dQmtXFh9rYZjVTzC6

Onward we rode, reaching the lunch stop in Highland Park and taking our
sandwiches away from the crowd, up the stairs facing the english gardens
and fountain, up to the reservoir promenade to enjoy the view of the entry
gates. In a few minutes we headed off for the final legs of the ride. We'd
enjoyed a steady stream of conversations among the 3000+ riders who I've
met through local group rides over the years.

The finish was a festival and we enjoyed an IPA from a regional maker, sat
under an umbrella as we enjoyed it and talked bikes and riding. Hill said
this is the first place he's come to ride that he wants to come back for
other rides. He purposely doesn't repeat places so he can see more but the
community, friendliness of neighborhoods and visual impact of the route
really impressed him.
https://photos.app.goo.gl/KXqnF2rvXTqfxzyp8

I got home with a tick under 80 miles on my day and I felt pretty good
rather than hobbled. Days like this are why my Rivendell is almost 20 years
old. What would be better?

[RBW] FS: BBB BCP-15W Wireless Bike Computer

Bought this BBB wireless computer in Rambouillet before PBP after I discovered

Used just a few times. Comes with the original packaging, instructions, etc. 10
functions (speed, time, distance, average speed, clock, etc.), with a wireless
transmitter that mounts to the fork. Took me about 15 minutes to set up.

Full specs here: https://bbbcycling.com/en_en/bcp-15w-dashboard

[RBW] Re: Rivendell Touchup Paint

2019-08-27 Thread ascpgh
That's funny. In an earlier thread I suggested that my orange Rambouillet
(funny how that name's recognized after this P-B-P) has transcended from
beausage to "beausavage". No hope of touching up that three layer color,
cost of a repaint is a large part of the next bike's cost in a color of my
(actually my wife and young lady we mentor's) choice: French vanilla with
sky blue lug lining.

Like Kai says: the Jumble is worth a look. On the other hand - that's not a
terrible deal for a canti 700c all-roadish bike that appears to fit 35's.
Also considering that it's a Riv and may likely have that silky-magic Riv
feel. Anyone know max tire size on a Rom? If it fits 38's then I might not
hesitate.
