2019-12-27 Thread John McClusky
I agree. Errands are a great way to get pedaling out in the fresh air. Most
of mine range from 6-8 miles ( hardware, grocery, the occassional doctor appt).
Even my commute is only about 8-10 miles of riding on a Brompton broken up
with a train ride. All these rides start and end on our gravel river trail
where I constantly spot eagles, falcons cranes, goats grazing (to reduce fire
hazard), and the construction of a fish ladder to aid salmon spawning. The
mundane often turns magical on these short rides.

Re: [RBW] Magic tips for clearing rocks from inside tires?

2019-12-27 Thread 'Deacon Patrick' via RBW Owners Bunch
Och, aye. That's the trick, Steve. How to have enough dexterity without
risking loosing skin. Slow and steady wins the race.

Tricks I've learned:

- Glomitts are brilliant, and then quickly get back into a chopper mitt
with wool lining at those temps, having worked with intentional slowness so
as to be fast by avoiding dangers and screw-ups.
- avoid getting snow on fingers
- avoid touching metal when snow does get on fingers. Wood, rubber, fiber
are fine to touch wen wet.
- get good at doing as many tasks by mitten as possible, exposing fingers
only briefly and intermittently as required.

Everything takes longer at colder temps. Everything has twenty additional
steps to consider because of all the layers and temps. The above tips also
work well for packing and unpacking, setting up tent, etc, if stopping or
camping.

With abandon,
Patrick

Re: [RBW] Re: All Rounder on ebay

2019-12-27 Thread Patrick Moore
THey certainly won't fit on the '93 (canti), let alone '92 (caliper) XO-1.
And I doubt they'll fit on the All Rounder. For a nice budget ride
(alternative to 26" all road custom), consider a nice NORBA-type very late
'80s or very early '90s (pre-susp-fork) high quality hardtail. I "all
roundered" several of these, long before, alas, the Rat Trap Pass, and they
work very nicely with the right top tube, stem, and bar (I used upjutters
and various drop bars).

The XOs and All Rounder were ahead of their time, looking back from today's
gravel bikes, but they were also call-backs to an earlier period of 650B
fat tire all rounders and 700C all rounders with fatter tires; IOW a
throwback compared to the then-20 mm tire road fashion (I know; I once
installed 19 mm tires on my Falcon.)

I am now in fat-tire all rounder heaven with my custom 700C X 60/650B X 70
Matthews, but there is much to be said for 2 or 2 1/2" wide 559 wheels --
they are much more nimble compared to almost 30" tall fatties, IME, tho'
the tall wheels do roll over small bumps and soft spots better.

This thread actually started as a conversation with Grant a couple years ago. I
don't remember the specifics of what he considers short and long rides, but
he's definitely in the category of preferring "go out for a while and come
back" distances.

Of course this is terrain specific, he and I both live in the same hilly area
of the world where a short ride can involve a pretty serious workout.
Flatlanders probably have different definitions of short and long.

2019-12-27 Thread Patrick Moore
Wha!!!??? Two to 4 flats *per year?* I used to think that the world was
spinning normally if I got 2 to 4 flats per 70-to-100-mile week!

As for granite debris inside the tire carcase, just possibly this might
help: I don't contend with rocks, but I very often have to clean up sealant
explosions and leakages, and I carry a rag -- old bandana, shop rag --
around with my repair kit to wipe the mess out of the inside of the tire.
The rag also alerts you to thorn remnants.

Perhaps a wipe with a soft rag around the inside of the tire will catch the
flint bits?

Re: [RBW] 2020 Goals

2019-12-27 Thread Patrick Moore
One of your goals ought to be to continue your very entertaining
ride/family/bike posts. As for tracking miles, instead of many computers
for many bikes, I use the free version of Cyclemeter for the iPhone (proud
to announce that my iPhone 5S is still going strong, after I discovered
that removing handsful of pocket lint from the charging socket allows you
to -- charge the phone). I keep an Excel spreadsheet that breaks out all of
my bikes, but since I'd be doing something like this anyway even if I did
use computers for all bikes, this is not a burden. I copy the spreadsheet
from year to year, so it doesn't have to be re-created every 12 months.

Re: [RBW] Re: Short rides are good

2019-12-27 Thread Patrick Moore
Self-confessed short-rider here. That is to say, I'm not short -- I ride
(level top tube) a 60 mm frame, c-c; but I ride short distances. When I
ordered my Joe Starck road fixie gofast custom (that's 5 qualifiers) I
apologetically told Grant that, "Wull, for me, yuh know, 30 miles is a long
ride." Grant said, "It *is* a long ride!" (From that time onward my
self-image has been much more positive.) This long before "Just Ride."

Of course, I ride mostly fixed gear on the road, and when I use multiple
gears (and freewheels!) it is largely off road, and everyone knows that
dirt and fixed add the equivalent of triple the riding distance. Seriously,
fixed gears are just perfect for short distance riding.

Typically, I'll fill the working week with 12-15 mile rt errand/detour
rides, and once or twice a week I'll get out and ride 20, 25, more rarely
30 miles. But the short rides fit well with my workday -- calls and edits
in the morning, writing late afternoon and evening. Today's 13.5-mile rt
shopping trip was extended by a very annoying, sealant-splashing nail
puncture, though I ramped up the strenuousness on the way home with 4 miles
in the hooks against a stiff southerly headwind beating against full rear
panniers; 70" gear; I have yet to capitulate and shift to the sissy 63"
Dingle gear, let alone the 54" flipside 22 t freewheel.

I am glad to say that I put considerably more miles on my bikes than on my
car; tho' this is less impressive than it might be because, apart from my
daughter, I drive an average of about 50 miles a month -- much
procrastinated, and much hated Big Box Shopping trips (Costco, Target, True
Value or Home Depot); occasional drives to church when it's dark or wet and
I don't feel like riding; a few social events, though I manage to arrange
even some of these at nearby (= walkable) eateries).

Och! Aye. Every ride helps me brain. Thus, no ride is too short, and every
ride is a gift. Even the ones that take longer to don boiled wool bits and
bobs than the ride itself. Grin. Some days me brain lets me oot ta hoose,
others past the gate, others past the town puddle (half a mile rt), others
to the green bench at the cottonwood (2 miles rt, maybe), others to the
horse barn, others to the bar and grill, others to Woodland Park (8 miles
rt). In general, if I make it through the massive metropolis of Woodland
Park (population approaching 8,000, still a few hundred below its altitude)
I make it up a trail, in which case my ride totals 18-20 miles depending on
the trail and what I do. ANy and all of those rides helps me do better,
making the next ride likely to be yet longer. Grin.

[RBW] Short rides are good

2019-12-27 Thread in Dallas nick

I'm on the same wavelength as to rides.
I'm right around 2000 miles for 2019 and my guess is more than half is errand
running.
I try to leave the automobile in the driveway and take a bike on every occasion
I can.
It's been years now since I decided even if it's only a mile or two to get out
and pedal.
When I have hours I'll pedal that long as well.

A lot of short rides can accumulate surprising mileage. Using my bike for
errands, visiting & just knocking around, I've had 100 mile weeks without
doing anything special. At this point 3 hours on the bike is enough. I
think most of my weekly mileage is more like in the 50-70 mile range. I
only know because I have a watch for monitoring my heart, & it also records
miles.

[RBW] Re: Snow and Brisk Riding Tips

2019-12-27 Thread 'Deacon Patrick' via RBW Owners Bunch
My rule for tires, year round, is supple knobbies as wide as reasonably
fits and still clears mud/snow, detritus. If Rene Herse made wider tires
I'd ride their knobbies on all my bikes. As it is:

Quickbeam: 38mm Steilacooms (Rene Herse)
Hunqapillar: 2.1" Racing Ralph liteskin
Gus Boots Willsen: 2.8" Nobby Nic Addix

Points to consider (all of which rule out less expensive tires for me)
- Supple rubber (both in type and thickness/thread count) conforms to
terrain, providing astounding grip.
- Knobbies pattered similarly to those on Rene Herse tires, with supple
rubber, ride surprisingly well on smooth, hard roads, and only get better
on the more fun stuff. Grin.
- A wider tire gives better control in loose stuff, be it sand, mud, or
sloppy snow. The idea of using a thin tire to cut through to the
under-surface is largely useless in varying conditions.

I hope that helps. Also, weight further back and off your front tire makes
the loose stuff far easier to ride. Rear wheel drives with weight, front
wheel floats and steers better without digging in and getting sloppy.

With abandon,
Patrick

2019-12-27 Thread DHans
I couldn't agree more. Even though my 2020 goal post (not as in football)
stated a mileage goal, I prefer to accumulate miles with lots of short
rides. I ride around the neighborhood, to the convenience store, or to the
coffee shop. It's transportation not sport for me. And, that's a change in
that there was a time I kitted out, hauled my bike to a meet up spot, and
rode hard and fast on a specific route just for exercise, fitness and to be
part of the group. Now I see my bike as a way to get there and to just
enjoy a Sunday (or any day) ride.

Ed, did you end up installing the Xtracycle conversion on the Clem? I've
been thinking about building a cargo set up in 2020 and had the idea to do

too long to be compatible. If you were able to work it out, could you post

I always thought the XOs and early All-Rounders were way ahead of their

considered huge for road bikes. How times have changed! Question for those

I agree, really cool video! I had the same question already asked about
MIT Atlantis vs. MUSA, but I'm also curious about the brakes on the rear.
I couldn't ID them from the quick glimpse, what are they? I really did NOT
need to see this video. I'd been "Atlantis curious" in the past, then
recently saw a pic of one with flat bars and got curious again. Promptly
talked myself out of it. Touring bike, probably not really suitable for
trails. Nope, now that defense mechanism for myself is out the window.
Seemed to handle trails just fine, or at least the kind I would consider
riding on.
Thank you for posting!

2019-12-27 Thread 'Kurt Henry' via RBW Owners Bunch
I'm not getting my son a new bike for Christmas, as he got a new Woom 6
last year. But I'm buying him some accessories. I hope that counts! Woom
now offers frame bags made of denim, sized for their frames. My son is
always reluctant to bring his phone, no wanting to drop or lose it. Now he
will have a nice place to put his phone, a few dollars (Duck donuts is on
the back side of the park behind our house and a common destination for him
and his friends), and a lock. Woom is sold out of their locks so will have
to get a regular one. Maybe one of the folding locks from Riv? I'm also
adding lights. It's that time of year! Rechargeables are perfect, no more
than he will ride in the dark and just up and down our alley to go see
friends.

Since the last time I decided horizontal dropouts were a dealkiller, I've
acquired 4 bikes with horizontal dropouts, and guess what? I didn't die.
Vertical dropouts are better, but horizontals are not the end of the

irresistable. So, new bike day? The build will be a drop bar mountain
bike. No racks, no lights, no fenders. It'll be used for 2-3 hour
mountain bike rides. I'll post photos when there is something to look at.
I have a couple small details to iron out.

In the meantime, there have been a couple gram-counter threads
recently, and I thought I'd offer up another datapoint while I have a bare
 frame and fork:

A 58cm Black Mountain Monstercross frame, with Cane Creek 40 headset
 cups pressed in, weighs 2257g
The fork with a crown race installed and an uncut threadless steerer is
 1057g

Use that data for whatever you like.

Cycling goals:
1) 2000+ miles. My goal this year was 1500 and I did 2000 so that shouldn't be
a problem
2) Finish building my 650b all road bike. It's 80% done now and all parts are
bought so again it shouldn't be a problem.
3) complete my first century ride. I did one metric century this year so I've
got a long way to go.
4) continue to be a full time bike commuter. 4 years strong now so this
shouldn't be a problem.

Non cycling goals:
1) get to the gym (weights) 150 times this year. Was a 2019 goal too and only
made about 115.
2) bring lunch to work 2 days a week. I'm currently a 5 day a week eat out guy.

Any retail endeavor is really, really, really hard to pull off these days.
Retail bicycles, add another really. Non-mainstream, non-disc bikes, add
another really. Adding in unrelated products to a specialty niche store,
which tends to confuse many consumers, add another really. When the added
products are non-digital cameras and vinyl records, add two more reallys.
Maybe adding CBD chain oil to the mix would subtract a really, but I doubt
it.

No doubt John knew this going in, as he knew the fate of the Bike Book
Hatchet store. It's a risky proposition and always a labor of love. I don't
know John, but he was very helpful with advice through this forum when I
had a question about my film camera. I wish him and his partner the best in
their next chapter.
