Re: [RBW] Plus Rims for GBW

2020-02-03 Thread Ed Fausto
Hi Ed,
Thanks for the link.
I am hoping that Velocity will build the widest practical rim for Grant's
planned V-brakes.
Same here, I want to have my Susie as a dedicated trail bike :-)

By the way, could you send a picture and specs of your proto Gus? :-)

2020-02-03 Thread Ed Carolipio
Thanks for update.

Coincidentally I was window shopping tires today at Maxxis for my
proto-Gus. SoCal riders really like the DHF + DHR combo for our "loose over
hard" trails. The Maxxis 2020 catalog has some recommendations on tire
width vs rim width. Here's the link to catalog
, see
p.6. Short version: 25 to 30mm for 2.2"-2.4"; 35-40mm for 2.6"; 40-45mm for
2.8"-3.0". For reference, the Cliffhangers have a 25mm internal width. In
addition, the Maxxis "Wide Trail" (WT) casing is for tires 2.4" and up and
optimized for wider rims: min inner width of 35mm but "can work over
30-35mm".

Would be really nice to run a high volume, aggressive tire on the Gus/Susie
when running it as a dedicated trail bike.

2020-02-03 Thread Ed Fausto
I have been patiently waiting for new rims for my Susie ever since I read
the news that Rivendell is working with Velocity for a new rim for their
Hillibikes.

I sent Velocity an email to check if they are still doing this project with
Rivendell and this is the reply I got.

-
Hello!

Thanks for taking the time to contact us via our webform. We are working on
a rim with Rivendell for their new hilly bike, but the details and timeline
are yet to be figured out. Unfortunately I don’t have more details for you.

Thanks for riding with Velocity USA! Please let me know if I can help in
any other way.

Re: [RBW] Re: Thinking about cycling for me in the future....

2020-02-03 Thread Ian Dickson
I was just telling my girlfriend about how, when I was a bike messenger
many years ago, I got hit by cars several times and always bounced up and
kept riding. I'm almost 50 now, and there are people who depend on me. I do
still ride in the city, but I'm a lot more judicious about where and how I
do it. It is important to be safe, but more importantly, there is no point
forcing yourself to do it if you don't enjoy it.

I'd only say, if you find that you miss riding, that it's worth giving
other kinds of cycling a shot to see if you like them after all. I used to
be strictly a road rider, but now I strongly prefer gravel roads and double
track. I don't have much interest in real mountain biking, but riding in
the woods or mountains is great. It's okay to drive your bike somewhere and
then ride.

I tried to post the Riv Appaloosa Pre-Order webpage but no luck. The
website says the sizes are: 48, 51, 54, 57, and 60 cm. In an earlier
email from Riv, Will (perhaps it was Grant) noted that the geometry is
virtually identical to that of the new MIT Atlantis except colors and sizes
differ. The MIT Atlantis sizes are: 47, 50 53, 55, 59, 62 cm. If one can
live with the color, size can be dialed in better with these choices than
for many other Riv frames.

[RBW] Re: Tips for mounting tubeless tires with tubes

2020-02-03 Thread masmojo
Mounting tires with tubes on tubeless rims is one of life's most confounding
things and used to drive me crazy, but I recently figured out "the trick".
May not work with every rim, but after my first foray into trying to do it,
failing and then going to my local shop and watching my buddy do it without any
tools, I figured "OK, I am doing something wrong"
Without getting too involved I will try to tell you what causes problems and
the solution.
First, when you put a tire on a tubeless rim the first bead wants to ride up on
the opposite shoulder (as it should) then the second side also wants to ride
the shoulder when you put it on. This all adds up and means you can't get that
last bit on.
Solution: when you get down to that last bit. Go around and push both beads
together in the middle, the opposite of where you are trying to push the last
bit of bead over, make sure those two beads are pushed together And riding in
the trough in the middle of the rim and not on the shoulders. This will create
enough slack on the opposite side to push the bead on!
Hopefully that makes sense? It would be easier to show you then try to write an
explanation, but . . .
Most times now I can pretty much get mine on by hand with no tools; but I
pinched lord knows how many tubes before I finally figured it out.

[RBW] Re: Appaloosa Presale

2020-02-03 Thread Mark Roland
The "newly updated" 2019 PBH and size chart lists the Apoloosa 55/58. I guess
they changed for 2020, but the only other chart on the website is the 2017.

Looks dangerous for my wallet and my wife's happiness. I should stay away,
good thing I don't own a car to drive myself there.

Re: [RBW] Re: Thinking about cycling for me in the future....

2020-02-03 Thread John Phillips
Hi BBDD,
Thank you for your kind words. You're right, my bike was my lifeline
back then.

I envy you your sidewalks! Compared to my sidewalks, those look like MUP's!
