2020-03-26 Thread Nathan Mattia
Well, I’m definitely loving it so far. For all the “small differences” I
think, it’s the best-fitting bike I’ve ever had. Just feels right every
time I saddle up.
I haven’t ridden this much since I was 8.

Re: [RBW] Re: Speed wobble

2020-03-26 Thread lambbo
Dearest Friend,

Is this happening on the used Homer you bought or the new-from-riv
Appaloosa? I bought my Cheviot used on this list, and it got speed wobble
at certain speeds down hills. Later, I got in an accident and bought a new
fork from Rivendell, and the bike no longer wobbles. I don't know if it
was that I re-installed the fork and messed with the headset, or if it was
the new fork.

Good luck!

Yeah. That is my experience as well.
Mostly it's about the weight between fore/aft.
They tend to be speed-specific. They'll happen at 18 mph, but not at 17,
for example.

Jobst wrote some (fairly strongly opinionated) missives about this - this

The only time I've had a wobble was one brevet on the Hilsen, in which I'd

nothing on the front, and sat up as I crested a hill and glided no handed.
Got a wiggle-wiggle-wiggle and shifted forward slightly, at which point it

Yeah... that's an odd one.
If you click through the site, their twitter link is dead. Nuthin' on the
FB.
The company url whois says it was last updated in January of this year.
It's a pretty roundabout scam if it is one.
Company url shows an...ahem... VERY different bias towards frame materials
and fit.

The internet can be a very strange place.

Re: [RBW] Cycling Glasses

2020-03-26 Thread Joe Bernard
Hey Doug, if you're a fathead like me I have WAY too many Oakleys you might be
interested in. They're rather unfortunately called "Asia Fit" by the company,
but they work great on non-Asian me: most regular shades fit too tight at my
ears while sliding down my nose, these solve that.

If interested I have a few that are good sport-plus-casual styles I'll sell
crazy cheap, plus a couple full-on cycling style if anyone else here wants
them. All in great condition, I take good care of my Oakleys and have too many!

As Reid says you can set them up differently, but really they're the same bike
with varying toptube heights. The only reason I can see to have both is if you
just really like that style of bike - lugged Riv with road brakes - and are
into the names and paint on both.

[RBW] PSA Clem Smith Jr/Clememtine Sacramento Craigslist with interesting ad

2020-03-26 Thread Jeff B
It does seem like a great deal if nothing fishy is going on. Agreed that it
could be an estate item, fairly new for that though.

It could be like what car guys do when the wife wants them to sell the project
car, mis-spell everything hoping that no one finds the ad so they can say that
no one wanted to buy it.

[RBW] Re: FS: Clem Smith Jr Disc 59

2020-03-26 Thread chris feczko
Hey Matthew,

Bars are Simworks getaround which I had laying around. This is a 61cm Toyo.
Not sure of the year. The tires are 2.1 TB's. The blunt 35's are great
though. Amazingly light and wide! First time I've been able to get a tire
to measure to their stated width. I have a little room in the rear and I
might be able to go 2.25 but not worth it to me. Fork can fit a 2.4 I
believe. Check out WIlliam's build above. Much more elegant!

Thanks

I don't know about each other, but they'll both certainly draw a lot of
compliments from bystanders (even from 6+ feet away)!

In seriousness, yes; provided they're set up differently enough from each
other. Cheviot as a commuter with racks and swept-back bars, Homer with
drops, for example. Rivs have the bug/feature of being versatile enough
that you can make them very similar to each other, or very different.

If you want more "spread", sub one of those for a Riv that'll take 50+mm
tires and cantilevers.

2020-03-26 Thread Dave S
Looks like a 650b/52cm to me. I would doubt this is stolen. I buy and sell
a fair amount of used bikes and I try to avoid stolen stuff. Although the
seller is clueless, that doesn't mean it was acquired illegally. I deal
with so many estate cleanout and storage auction guys that do a quick
google search on the biggest word on the bike and list it.

Also, I don't think they'd post the bike's VIN and their license plate in
the ad if they were a criminal.

Your Specialized Expedition looks amazing. I think you’re going to really like
riding the Rivendell. Rivendell are 85% similar to 80s touring bikes, but the
small differences become apparent over many miles and years. :)

Re: [RBW] Cycling Glasses

2020-03-26 Thread Keith Weaver
I just went through this, and settled on some that I've been happy with.
They are the Tifosi Tyrant 2.0. I got them with the brown polarized fototec
lenses. That is a photochromic lens, they do lighten and darken based on on
surrounding brightness. I can't say I've noticed the light transmission
varying a lot, but they have been about right for cloudy and dusky
conditions, as well as sunny days. There are a lot of other lens options
for these, and they are interchangeable, so you can switch them up if
desired. I also wanted some shades that would be somewhat stylish in off
the bike settings, these are acceptable for me, if not the most
good-looking casual shades.
Cheers,
Keith

Re: [RBW] Re: Speed wobble

2020-03-26 Thread Peter White
I've never found that wheel alignment, which is actually frame alignment,
has any effect on wobble. If the frame is out of alignment the two wheels
will not follow the same line when the bike is moving in a straight line.
For example, if the rear wheel is tracking to the right of the front wheel
when moving in a straight line, the bike will tend to turn towards the
right. This is easiest to feel when riding no hands. But this won't cause
the bike to wobble.

Re: [RBW] Re: How do you ride alone?

2020-03-26 Thread Toshi Takeuchi
Sorry, I'm late to the discussion, but these bone conduction headphones are
amazing. They work best in the higher register--the bass is not so great.
I like to listen to piano music and all of the street noise comes through
perfectly well because the ears are totally open. In addition, the car
noises tend to be in the lower register/rumbling which is not in the range
of the piano music, so there is no loss of hearing for street sounds.

I use the Aftershokz brand and they are comfortable and highly recommended
for exercise.
