It sounds like you want to rotate the lever mounts 90 degrees on a mustache
bar. I’ve never seen this done, but it seems feasible. You might want to adjust
the mating surface of the lever with a half-round file.

Disclaimer: I didn’t even visit the bike shed to look at the pieces.
UPDATE (DIS-disclaimer): I put the chickens away and put upright levers on a
moustache bar. Easy. I don’t see an advantage over a normal moustache setup,
but it’s possible.

Hey James,
Could you elaborate on the cerakote. I have one of the previous 2 bolt stems,
and love it, but it has developed rust under the coating. Does the cerakote
minimize this? I know it’s used on guns and stuff. Curious about differences in
the previous finishes and this new version.

My wife's pbh is long for her torso (relative to many folks), and she's
prone to neck and shoulder pain if too stretched out on a bike for more
than a few miles.
The other week I finally swapped out the 50mm stem on her Roadini with a 0
offset stem I bought from James/Analog a looong time go.
(I rationalize my inexcusable delinquency by observing her upright bared
Sam H serves her fine, so really she doesn't need the Roadini.)
She came back from the first round the block test with a big smile on her
face. The bike finally fits her the way she wants, and we're both much
happier.

Thanks James. Real nice stem.

1" head tubes are 1" head tubes, threadless or threaded. The part you need
to worry about is whether the fork is threaded. Actually, you can even chop
down an extra long threaded fork to make it threadless if you so wish, as
long as you don't end up clamping the stem on the threaded portion, because
the external diameter is the same. Furthermore, if a manufacturer makes
both 1" threadless and 1" threaded headsets, it's usually the top cap and
associated parts that are different; the lower end is identical, and even
the upper cup and bearings are usually identical. Chris King even sell
conversion kits to convert one to the other.

In any case, I don't think 1" threadless is a step backwards. 1 1/8" was
introduced for mountain bikes, when it was decided that the 1" steerer was
too wimpy, especially with the introduction of non-steel steerers. AFAIK,
Rivendell steerers are all steel, and they don't especially cater to the
"EXTREME SPORTS" crowd, so 1" threaded or threadless is plenty. As for
threaded vs threadless, each have its advantages and disadvantages. For
example, it's hard to get a lot of height out of threadless setups without
it looking goofy, but it's trivial to properly setup and preload a
threadless front end with only 1 or 2 Allen wrenches (no need for a pair of
32mm or 36mm wrenches).

they don't list it, I am assuming the SOMA bar is lighter since it is aluminum.
Yes, steel bars tend to be heavier, but I rarely find them harsh. I prefer the
steel Albatross just because it is much more supple in my opinion & only
slightly heavier.
The Tumbleweed bar is not harsh either, I just think it's over built; maybe
making it so wide necessitates it be made out of thicker Steel!? I don't know,
but it's a wonderful bar saving that one issue.

The Tumbleweed Persuader looks very similar to the Soma Dream bar, though
the Soma comes in aluminum.

Why do steel frames feel good while steel bars just feel harsh and heavy?
At least the ones I've tried.

Re: [RBW] Re: Are there different sizes of 1" threaded headset?

2020-08-09 Thread J L
Just to swing it over to Rivendell. The Legolas from 10+ years ago and the
Rodeo had always been a available in 1 inch threadless options. It is a good
way for those bicycle models to have compatibility with “modern” components and
aesthetic. Threadless stems in 1 inch and 1 1/8 inch fit with only a commonly
found shim needed. As we all know Rivendell has their own fork crowns cast and
typically use 1inch threaded steerers. A 1 inch threadless steerer fits the
same crown making it an easy swap when placing orders with the builder.
That is a common reason other makers have used 1 inch threadless steerers, they
fit the same for crowns and head tubes as 1 inch threaded.
They are also independent of threading standards (french, raleigh, english,
etc) so eplacement forks with different properties (rake, or braze ons for
example) can be made and are modular.
Some “popularity” is also due to aesthetics.
Some want stems that have a removable faceplate, more commonly used on
threadless, so they opt for that style steerer.

To answer the OP question, there are many different sizes of 1 inch headsets.
Threaded and threadless both come in two different crown race sizes. Beyond
that, there are differences in bearings, stack height, and thread style that
need to be considered.

Re: [RBW] Path Less Pedaled will review a Riv!

2020-08-09 Thread masmojo
I have to agree about the width of the Albatross bars, a little wider would be
nice, but if you put it into the context of when they actually came out, at
that time they were considered quite wide. Handlebars across ALL disciplines
have gotten MUCH wider. The Billie bar is a little wider technically, but
because it flairs out a little more the additional width is only at the extreme
of the ends of the bar which is deceiving, because you may not ride back far
enough to utilize that additional width.

My favorite bars; in no particular order:
Albastash
Albatross (steel)
Salsa Cowbell
Surly Sunrise
FSA Metropolis

Honorable mention: the new Tumbleweed persuader. It could possibly be my all
time favorite if it weren't so blasted heavy!
Also at 800mm wide it's hard to figure why anyone outside of Wilt Chamberlain
would find it comfortable. I cut mine down quite a bit, but still nearly ate it
the other day when I caught the end of the bar on something.

Sorry I skated so far off topic there! 

[RBW] Re: 31.8 quill stems now available in 0, 30, 50 and 70mm

2020-08-09 Thread Weston Hein
Just wanted to chime in and say that the fit and finish on these stems is
phenomenal. I ordered a 30mm to run drops on my Clem and was really
impressed with the craftsmanship- the expander wedge snugs easily and there
is no play or "rocking" back in forth felt with the stem run at full
extension.

I really think the design gives you the best of both worlds: clamping force
and removable faceplate of threadless along with the ease of height
adjustment of a quill.

[RBW] Re: Are there different sizes of 1" threaded headset?

2020-08-09 Thread masmojo
It is very strange, but when threadless headsets first appeared I am pretty
sure they were 1", but quickly went to 1 1/8" (or larger).
That was OK, but lately 1" threadless does seem to be becoming "a THING" again,
I've noticed components popping up in 1" threadless, it seems to be popular
with BMX racers under 10 years old. In that geme, light weight is everything
and smaller stuff just weighs less! (Surprise)
I made a similar mistake to you, I bought a threadless BMX stem and didn't
even look at the size, because it was a modern component; then when it arrived
I was shocked to find it didn't fit & I was like "Whaaa ?)
Now I see a bunch of 1" threadless components, but not frames with 1"
threadless spec.?
Maybe someone knows more? Last thing we need is another spec. And I am unsure
how 1" threadless is anything but a backwards step!!???

Re: [RBW] Re: Suggestions on my aspiring Riv-style build?

2020-08-09 Thread S
I agree. If you plan to ride the bike through "salt and snow" and lock it
up outside public buildings, then it makes sense to use a less expensive
frame.

As for the XO-2 versus Expedition, I prefer the looks of the the
Expedition, but, again, for "salt and snow," the XO-2 may be the better
choice, as it can take wider tires. The tight clearance on the Expedition
could be frustrating. And the XO-2 still looks nice, eg,

https://www.cycleexif.com/bridgestone-xo-2

Grant Petersen designed the XO-2 for his own mixed surface commute, so in a
way, it's really a commuter bike, which is what you are after.

Re: [RBW] SS Coupler Military Bike stupid idea?

2020-08-09 Thread Michael Hechmer
I have two SS coupled bikes, a bilenkey tandem and an old (1984) Trek 620.
I don't think it makes any difference in the ride, but it can make a
difference in the packing. I would suggest you use a bike builder with
experience and just his/her judgement about the latter. Having two
somewhat equal sections makes it easer to stow, both in a case and in a
car. I have had more hassle with the cable disconnects, poorly positioned,
when trying to clamp a TT in a repair stand.

Tandem's require a great deal more thought and experience. I've got that
one dialed in.

Re: [RBW] Re: Rene Herse Fender Install for QB

2020-08-09 Thread 'Deacon Patrick' via RBW Owners Bunch
After fiddling for quite a while I've learned the following from this
experiment:

- metal fenders are a craftsman install. Poorly installed, they are nuts;
well installed and...
- well installed metal fenders ride beautifully and quiet and solid on
asphalt and dirt roads and smoother trails.
- metal fenders on a fixed gear bike with horizontal dropouts and changing
gears and flex when climbing do not play well with all the climbing and
jouncing.

I'm offering these Honjo fenders for up to 700 x 38 tires for free pick up
if anyone is local (I'm near Colorado Springs, CO).

With abandon,
Patrick

Re: [RBW] WTB: 55cm or 56cm Heron

2020-08-09 Thread David Hallerman
Hey, I have a 56cm Heron Road that I was planning to post soon (gotta find
some time to write it up). Complete bike with frame in pristine condition
and almost all new parts, including Velocity wheels I bought from Rivendell.

Contact me off-list if you want to know more.

[RBW] Re: CL outting: Bombadil

2020-08-09 Thread Mark Roland
You could show up with a suitcase full of cash, buy all the bikes, then buy
the Honda Element, stuff the bike in, and drive away with an instant bike
collection.
