Re: [RBW] Re: 19-year old Riv

Patrick: "Have others had James's problem with RH cranks loosening? If so,
I shall resolutely avoid buying one."

There was a thread about RH cranks coming loose a few months back, and mine
are among a few that have had that issue. It happened more in the beginning
and decreased in frequency over time (mine are near 3 years old). I got in
the habit of checking the tightness at least once a week. I use socket hex
bolts instead of the supplied crank bolts, so carry a small hex key instead
of a big PB wrench. I finally installed self-extractor caps over the bolts
(suggested by Mark Bulgier?) which act as locknuts and seem to have solved
the problem. Like James, I've installed many cranksets in the past and
the bolts have always stayed tight. I'm not sure what the problem is with
these cranks, but my guess is an imperfect fit with the BB spindle (mine is
a Phil, JIS taper).I still like them but for $455 they shouldn't have
any issues.

[RBW] Re: How do you ship yer Riv?

2020-12-18 Thread 'Hetchins52' via RBW Owners Bunch
There is also https://www.shipbikes.com. You can call and talk to them with
your questions on box and bike size:
Contact info: PH: 1-708-383-2433. inform at shipbikes.com

They do sell a ready-made XL bike container. It is advertised as suitable
for tandems, large mountain bikes and e-Bikes.:
 https://www.shipbikes.com/xl-bikebox/
*The XL Bikebox.com meets all ground and air shipping requirements for UPS
and FedEx (which is 72 x 14 x 32 inches or 164 dimensional inches).
Recommended total shipping weight is 100 pounds. Made in USA. Guaranteed
for one year on shell, lifetime on metal mounts.*
They'll sell you a new "skin" when your box gets too battered to reuse.
You can also make your own. With the increasing popularity of e-Bikes I was
able to find a few of those when regular boxes had disappeared this past
summer. They are big and tough, too. Designed for heavier loads, they'll
last more trips.
This all assumes ground shipping with shipbikes or bikeflights. The
airlines will likely be prohibitively expensive, albeit faster.

[RBW] Bump: Removing primer from powdercoat

2020-12-18 Thread Patrick Moore
Does anyone have any suggestions for removing tendrils of acrylic primer
from powdercoat without damaging the powdercoat? Story below.

Thanks.

When I touched up the bare areas on the seatstays caused by rubbing of a
flat tire during a ~5 mile walk home a while ago, I used acrylic primer and
paint because I had those at hand. Unfortunately, my masking was not as
thorough as I had tried to make it (tip: use masking tape for masking, not
electrician's tape) so that little tendrils of primer escaped and dried on
the powerdercoat.

What is the best way to remove these without harming the powdercoat? They
are not thick, but they resist mineral spirits and I've not tried any other
solvent or mechanical method.

I have also found on some of the older Rivendell models with 2°-3°
sloping top tubes Bike insights mixes up the effective top tube and
calls it the actual top tube and then calculates a longer effective

I'd like to use wide drop bars, so stack & reach are quite important to

If anyone has any comments on the current long chainstay versions of

Re: [RBW] Re: How do you ship yer Riv?

2020-12-18 Thread Jay Lonner
I have thought through this very problem for a while, and so much hinges on how
frequently you plan to travel with your bikes. If this is a one-off then your
best move is probably to bite the bullet and just pay the ludicrous oversized
shipping costs. That adds up quickly though, and if you envision more frequent
travel I’d look at alternative solutions, like getting S couplers installed.
In my case I concluded that dedicated travel bikes were the best solution, and
am expecting a pair of Bike Fridays (or would that be Bikes Friday?) in the
next few weeks. We went full custom, but good deals are available on the used
market.

[RBW] Clem H 52 gone in record time. Who is the lucky winner?

2020-12-18 Thread Alex K
Well, that was quick! Got an email that there was one final Clem H 52cm
available at 310pm and it was gone by 319pm. I was considering buying for
a friend who is looking for that exact bike. Not only was it marked down
from $900 to $800, but there was a $100 credit if purchased before 12/31.
Somebody out there is real stoked and with good reason. I think it had the
sloped seatstays, too. Sheesh, this collecting Rivs is feeling eerily
like collecting baseball cards 25 years ago. When do you know you don't
need anymore precious steel bicycles?

I think the Joe A, but not the Homer, would be the better bike for the hard
riding you'd like to do. It's a very rugged bike. You might also want to
look at Riv's new hilly bikes (I don't know anything about them). or even
the Clem H.

[RBW] Re: How do you ship yer Riv?

2020-12-18 Thread dougP
That's a tough one. Have you checked with https://www.bikeflights.com/faq
? From discussions here, they seem a good source, and much more customer
oriented than common carriers. I have not used them but would look into
next time I ship my bike.

My 58cm Atlantis is the old, shorter wheelbase & it's like doing Rubik's
Cube to get it into a dedicated bike box that the airlines will accept as
not being oversize. The long wheelbase of the newer models could create
problems, unless you have a small frame. The airlines all have weight
limits (varies by carrier but 50 lbs is common) that are expensive to
exceed. Ground shipment generally has a 70lb limit before extra charges.

Thinking about this $3200 Clem H..Is that way way way too much to
ask for this bike? The frame itself was, what, $800? With tax, call it
$880. Seems like if you add up all the parts, bike trinkets, etc.. this
person probably poured about $3500 total for what looks to be a labour of
(possibly misplaced) love? Coupled with the fact that the Clem H might
never make a comeback (though I hear that we might have a Return Of The H
advocate in the upper reaches of management at RBW), I think $3200 seems
almost fair. Plus, does anybody ever pay full price on Craigslist? Of
course, I always end up paying full price and always end up taking the
first offer I get, no matter how low it may be, because I have absolutely
ZERO negotiating skills. So I'm thinking the final price here will be
$2750, depending on the patience/desperation level of the seller.
Definitely not the most elegant build I've seen, and not sure it's the
buildout that was intended for old ClemH, but it definitely seems like
somebody knew what they wanted, and poured some hard-earned cash into it.
Would love to know how much this one fetches.

[RBW] Re: Deacon Patrick

2020-12-18 Thread Cyclofiend Jim
I am leaving this first post intact in case any list members wish to
communicate with Deacon directly.

Please note - as stated (to paraphrase a certain bike company..."ever since
2007"):
"*RBW Owners Bunch - Dedicated to the discussion of Rivendell Bicycles and
products*
Ride reports encouraged, as is a respectful, supportive and polite tone in
all posts."

Since we had several contentious conversations develop in this past year,
I've simplified the moderation:
- Off-topic posts are removed.
- Members who continue to advance off-topic threads and commentary are
moderated.

[RBW] Re: Replace my Atlantis ?

2020-12-18 Thread Grandy
Sean, I have a new 55cm MIT Atlantis, the smallest frame size designed for
700c wheels. Riv has conflicting information on their website in regards to
maximum 700c/29er tire size. 2.2 and 2.4 is mentioned. In my experience,
experimenting with different tires, I would only fit 2.1's or smaller,
unless you are sticking to pavement. Numerous sticks and rocks got caught
between the frame/fork and tire with 2.2's.

[RBW] Re: Replace my Atlantis ?

2020-12-18 Thread Grandy
Sean, I have Jones bars on all my bikes, including my Atlantis. I also own
a Jones Plus LWB. My MIT Atlantis with 29x2.1's rides smoother than my
Jones with 29x2.6's. Both bikes have a 1200 mm wheelbase, give or take a
few mm, which I found interesting. If you do run Jones bars with a 1" quill
stem, stick to a steel stem. Aluminum stems are too flexy, from my
experience.

[RBW] How do you ship yer Riv?

2020-12-18 Thread Paul in Vermont
Hello  All.

I am planning a trip out west to help take care of my parents, and I’d like
to take my long wheelbase Atlantis and my wife’s Clem, as baggage on the
plane or by shipping them UPS.The wheelbases are so long they appear not to
fit in most normal bike travel boxes.

I know I can use cardboard, but I’d prefer something more permanent I will
use long term once the world opens up!

How do you ship your long wheelbase Rivendell when you travel?

Paul

pressure and check for tube under the bead or pull on the tire to achieve
that sometimes elusive evenness with rim. Spin and repeat as needed. John

 Hey all!
I just threw on Schwalbe Marathon Winter tires (700x40) on the
Atlantis. Sad to see the Shikoros all deflated and and sitting in the
corner, but it was either they take a timeout or I don't ride to work.
 Easy
 choice.

So I've been riding as an adult over a year now and started with an
affordable Linus with 28mm tires and promptly got a flat my third or
 fourth
time out on it. I took the wheel over, unseated the bead, got the tube
 out,
patched it, put it back in, reseated the bead, yadda yadda yadda, BOOM. No
issue. Had another flat this last summer and had to repair it while on the
way home from picking up a crowler of beer...very stressful, almost lost
 my
wrench, but got it done, not a problem!

Later this last summer as piece-by-piece Riv'd up my Linus, I wen to
35mm tires. Took off the old ones, did all the steps, and as I was pumping
up the front tire, the tube blew out (some tube was under the
 bead...DOH!).
So I laughed it off, changed the tube, did the rear wheel, and went out
 for
a ride. All was going well, then on a fast descent, when I started
 breaking
I heard an awful thud-thud-thud-thud that was getting louder and BANG! I
screwed up the back wheel, too! So re-did both tires, used soapy water,
thought about using talc, but I couldn't find any locally and Sheldon
 Brown
says it does nothing...I never had another problem.

So I guess I'm wondering this (if you've managed to read this far)...at
what point can you be absolutely sure that tube is not pinched between
 bead
and rim? Can you ever be sure? is my bike a ticking time bomb? :)

Just wanted to share my neurotic thoughts as I rode to work, traversing
ice for the first time ever!

[RBW] Stack & Reach for Joe Appaloosa & Atlantis

2020-12-18 Thread Den John
Hello,

My name is Johnny. I live in Belgium and I'm Riv Curious. I post from time
to time on the iBOB group.

I've been obsessed with the idea of owning a Riv for a while. I'm
particularly interested in the Atlantis and Appaloosa.

Could anyone tell me the stack & reach numbers for a 55cm Atlantis and a
57cm Appaloosa (current models)? Riv doesn't list S on their geometry
chart.

An image of the measurements I need is attached.

I'd like to use wide drop bars, so stack & reach are quite important to
know.

If anyone has any comments on the current long chainstay versions of these
bikes, I'd also be interested to hear. This seems to be the most
distinctive aspect, and the only way to get something like this in the EU
would be to go custom. I do have a bakfiets,
and the long wheelbase on that makes for a very nice ride.

I suppose now is not really the best time to think about importing a bike
from the US to Europe, but never mind :-)

Thanks,
Johnny in Belgium

[RBW] Re: Anyone else a paranoid mechanic?

2020-12-18 Thread EverRed
Pump the tire up until it’s slightly firm, then squeeze it as you peak
between rim and tire and you will see if the tube is pinched. Of course go
around the whole wheel on both sides.

Is https://www.randijofab.com on your radar at all? Her stock items are nice,
and she may be open to custom bag orders as well. I recently ordered a cap in a
custom configuration and it wasn’t a hassle at all.

[RBW] handlebar snack/Nalgene/Hydro bags

2020-12-18 Thread Lucky
Hey all,

I found a guy who makes handlebar snack bags (amongst many other bike bags)
and I love the ones I got from him very much (he is @greg.newland on
Instagram) but he's currently not taking custom orders.

I know there are a lot of commercially made bags online but I'm looking for
something interesting and fun, crazy fabrics and so on that I can't seem to
find "off the shelf".

Anyone want to recommend an individual who is taking commissions right now
or who maybe isn't one of the big name places that I've already seen?

By "snack bag" I mean those tube shaped stem bags that can hold a large
bottle or a mess of snacks, or whatever, typically with a drawstring.

Again, looking for individuals here more than companies (Chrome, etc)

Re: [RBW] Re: 19-year old Riv

2020-12-18 Thread James Valiensi
Patrick,
I’ve mounted hundreds of tapered-square bottom brackets, only one came loose
and that was because I didn’t tighten it enough.
This one required much more tightening force than any other one I’ve dealt with
before (Campy, Shimano, TA, Sugino to mention a few I’ve worked on).
My RH crank came loose about 4 times, I started to carry a wrench after the 2nd
time. Finally, I figured I had nothing left to lose and put the breaker bar to
it. It’s been good for a few thousand miles since.

I’d love to have another on for my Joe Appaloosa. Maybe one day I’ll pony up
for another (pardon the pun). I would not recommend against it.

Joe - I keep referring to him as "Deacon" in order to avoid confusion with
the other Patrick. He is a real deacon, BTW, in his local Roman Catholic
congregation, something he takes very seriously.

Re: [RBW] Re: Deacon Patrick

2020-12-18 Thread George Schick
Steve, again - as I stated previously, I did not follow the thread that
involved the discussion of "reparations," but some remark that someone made
must have been taken as hostile to a reply that Deacon made. Hence, he
(wisely) decided to back out of the list entirely because he evidently felt
personally affronted. It doesn't happen often here, but it does happen -
low carb diets, helmets, etc. Fortunately, our moderator catches many of
these early-on and deletes the post entirely. But he has a full time job
and and only do so much. Then again, our moderator occasionally gets
accosted for doing so too, as in the blow up incident over BLM a while back
which he deleted.
Anyway, I'm outta here.

Re: [RBW] Re: Deacon Patrick

2020-12-18 Thread George Schick
Steve - Deacon used the phrase "rise of the cancel culture" in his reply to
Patrick's inquiry. The author of the review of that book I cited carefully
discusses the intersection of conflicting views that eventually result in
the refusal to pay attention to any of them under the guise of some kind of
oppression (the need of one side to seize power over another). IOW, one
can't say anything about almost anything in the public realm nowadays
without someone pointing to the fact that whatever was said is
discriminatory in some way against someone else. These, as the critical
reviewer points out, are the "roots of 'wokeness' ", or a person who
is supposedly alert and sensitive to oppressive statements and has the
ability to point out the errors of others who made the remarks.

I've corresponded off-line with Deacon in the past and have a good
impression of his views and beliefs and that's why I attached that file -
for additional edification on the matter. But we'd better knock it off or
else this thread is going to wind up getting nixed, as well.

Re: [RBW] Re: 19-year old Riv

2020-12-18 Thread Patrick Moore
James's report on the RH crank surprised me, since I have thought that I
might one day buy one. But this report of loosening does not make me
confident.

Have others had the same experience with loosening?

Note: I am aware how hard it is to get a response from RH "customer
service." My method to force things is to post an indignant message of
complaint on the iBoblist, which seems somehow to chivvy the inert little
gnomes of service into immediate, ingratiating action. Try it at home.

But back to RH cranks: do they loosen more than, say XD2s and Pro 5 Vises?
I don't think I've had 1 crank out of scores if not hundreds come loose,
except for very cheap Indian-made cottered ones that I probably installed
with the wrong-sized cotter pin, and that was 50 years ago.

I certainly am not doubting James's experience, but I'd like to know
others'.

A tangent but not a 90* one: for those who want the opposite to what
Michael wants, and are looking for a minimalist, very light musette that
can be folded tiny and stuffed into a small kit bag for occasional pickups
when you are not palping bike luggage, Velo Retro's musettes are just
right. I carry them on the 3 bikes that don't have regular luggage for
those "just-in-case" moments.

Velo Retro panders to the retrogrouch and history nostalgic in each of us.

In my brief email conversation with him I gathered that he finds the need
to withdraw from public discussion and spend more time alone; at least, he
has done this once or twice before with this list. So perhaps he will come
back again. I miss his photos especially.

Deacon *we're talking about you!!!*

I rode with him once in the hills above Florissant, CO (I think that was
the nearby roadside town) back when my sister and family lived in the
general area, and with beauty like that to ride in, I can understand
wanting to talk less and ride more, especially if you can enjoy riding at
10*F.

Patrick Moore, who also should talk less and ride more, even if only in

I like the Riv flatsack

it were just a bit taller to fit a standard magazine. Currently sold out.
I saw Herse is selling one

lightweight and packable, as you would expect.

I think he's responding to issues cited in the attached file. I carefully
decided not to follow the threads in the "reparations" post so I'm not sure
exactly what was said that triggered his withdrawal from the group, but
reading the critique will give you the basic crux of what he's objecting to.

I read the Deacon's blog post last night. This incidentally is
corresponding with my own return to the RBW Owners Bunch after a couple
year hiatus. Something pleasing about reading his words as some of my first.

But like a lot of Deacon's prose I struggle with his words; I had to reread
it a few times to get some meaning. Any idea what censorship he is talking
about? I don't want to dig up old wounds just to satisfy my curiosity, so
if it's better left unsaid that is fine. But censorship isn't something I
ever really experienced here and I'm hoping that hasn't changed in those
intervening years.

[RBW] Re: Musette Recommendations

2020-12-18 Thread Ben Miller
Michael,

I have a Strawfoot waxed-canvas musette that I really like. Handmade in
Santa Cruz, CA.

Still plain and functional, but the waxed canvas does provide a fair deal
of structure. I don't know what the original Riv musette looks like, but
the Strawfoot was a nice, straightforward clasp to hold the cross strap in
place that just works. And it doesn't have a zipper like the new Riv one,
but just a snap that feels really solid. It's been durable for me, had it
for ~10 years.

I was gifted, by a very kind soul, an old Riv Plain Musette made of organic
cotton, along with the 1996 Rivendell catalog that it's featured in. Like
the label implies, it's plain and simple. I'm planning to keep it in my
bike bag for those instances where I need to carry just a bit more than the
bag allows.

I'm wondering if folks have recommendations for other musettes that work
well on a bike, but have a few more features (and more structure) than this
plain cotton one that I have. Even better, if you have one you'd like to
sell contact me off-list. The two that I've found so far that I like are
both out of stock (Riv's current Musette and one from Handy Bag).

As an aside, in the last week I've found a new appreciation for my Riv MUSA
Pants when a pair of long johns are layered underneath. I tended not to
like the feel of cold nylon on my legs in the winter months, adding long
johns make these pants a dream.

Re: [RBW] Re: 19-year old Riv

2020-12-18 Thread James Valiensi
Andy,
I’m originally from north of your area, New Castle PA. My folks still live
there. I keep a bike at their house. There is a really nice bike trail that
runs along the Mahoning River between New Castle and Youngstown OH. Have you
ridden it? It is ten miles one way and not exactly challenging or too exciting
but I love riding it because it is so different that pedaling in LA. The trail
was built on an old electric trolly right of way that ran from Youngstown to
Cascade Park in New Castle. I think it was from the late 19th century. One time
I found some of the original bricks from the tracks and the date was something
like 1890.

I try to be careful with my bikes. I have a friend that is the opposite, he can
take a brand new bike and make it look 25 years old in a month.

Cheers!

Terrific!
Way to go Pam and welcome to the group.

I like the carrying of unusual loads on a bike.

I've used the little two wheel hand trucks / hand carts to tow heavier or
larger loads on my bikes a few times.

Also I've carried things probably too heavy for rear rack and baskets all
strapped like crazy with bungee cords.

Towing a Christmas tree extra cool!
