[RBW] Re: Rivendell vs Crust! Which is Better?

2021-02-09 Thread Mark Schneider
I deliberately didn't bother to watch it because it's a stupid click bate
title and a ridiculous premise. Like Ben stated they're both great bikes,
but quite different. My custom Terafrerrma is nothing like my Masi, or my
Homer or Atlantis. If I'm going on a long fastish ride but want my camera
in my bag in front of me I take the low trail custom. I use the old Masi if
I just want to ride hard and fast. But most the time I just chill on one of
the Rivendell's that are still fast, fun, and plush.
I found the idea as ridiculous as people arguing who's better, Clapton,
Page Beck, or Mick Taylor. (It's obviously Peter Green)lol.
I'm sure I'll watch the video eventually, Russ does a great job and he's
level headed and fair.

[RBW] Rivendell vs Crust! Which is Better?

2021-02-09 Thread Ben Miller
The "Path Less Pedaled" YouTube channel just released a video with the
provocative title "Rivendell vs Crust! Which is Better?
"

The actual video is a lot less provocative. Basically Russ comparing his
Hillborne to his Bombora. Still interesting, but maybe less so than it
could be?

I imagine Crust and Rivendell must get compared to each other a lot. I know
that their the only two bike frames I currently own and ride, so I do it
more or less constantly. I imagine that this is partly due to Matt & Bene
purposefully designing the Romanceur frame with the Rivendell aesthetic in
mind. I think Russ sort of touches on that, when comparing the Bombora to
the All City and the Hillborne to the Richtey. He seems to be saying, the
Ritchey/All City aesthetic lacked something the Riv/Crust bikes had.

Anyways, I think of Crust as threadless, disc, and low trail compared to
Rivendell with rim brakes, quill stems, and high trail. Like most thing's
not hard and fast (see: Canti Lightning Bolt). What's your hot take on the
two?

I think both bike companies are really doing some amazing and important
stuff for the bike industry. What I think would be really interesting
collaboration between Grant and Matt. Maybe something along the lines of
the Soma San Marcos, but both providing inputs. That'd be really cool!

[RBW] Re: Leah Peterson Takes A Stand

2021-02-09 Thread Bicycle Belle Ding Ding!
Tomorrow I am doing a new thing because Leah Peterson Took A Stand and now
has no excuses.

The crappy electrical tape the LBS used to tape my dyno wire under my
fender is (predictably) falling off...again. I need to remove the rear
wheel, which I have never ever done - and clean the fender (I’m thinking
with alcohol) and then try to secure the wire until the good tape arrives
from Analog. I’m afraid that this will all go south on me and I will have a
unicycle.

I’m going to watch like 15 YouTubes tonight. Wish me luck.

Darn this new stand,
Leah

 Hiya Bill,

I appreciate the compliment on the previous build. Good to hear your
 wheel tire combination work.

On this build I'm going with a more around town lighter setup.

Since I posted this on the forum I believe I've decided I'd like to run
a tire from 47 mm up to~55mm. I may start out with a WTB horizon or byway.
For rims I am leaning towards the Velo Orange Voyager rims in 650B setup
tubeless. Unfortunately they're out of stock!!

Albatross bars. I really want to keep my cockpit clean so I'm
considering downtube shifters or stem shifters. My preference would be the
downtube shifters, just simpler and cleaner lines. I don't care about
indexing so friction is my preference. Drivetrain 9-speed with a white
 industries double crank.

Small Nitto rack up front and small Nitto rear rack both of which I
have. I'm considering Paul Minimoto brakes and I have Paul brake levers.
Vice silver pedals to complete the build.

I highly recommend the Compass/RH Barlow Pass 38mm tires for the Sam. I

incredibly comfortable. I like the drop bar setup on mine works great

You're on the right track with the RBW52, 20 lbs. including a dog moving

unfortunately there aren't many out there and the people who have them
don't seem to be selling. Good luck!

Re: [RBW] Re: Wanted: Nitto/Rivendell RBW52F Basket Rack

2021-02-09 Thread Jared Wilson

Right on, thanks for the input Justin.

I like the profile of the Mark's Rack, problem is I need to be able to
support 20+lbs which leaves me with a rack larger than I really want.

Maybe switching it up with the longer struts like you mentioned could put
me on the right track?

I always overloaded my old Nitto M12 without issue, but adding a dog to the
mix makes me hesitant to up the load on a smaller rack.

Jim, I'm pretty sure that was in the weekly Riv email Will writes, it was
on a Will bike. It'll be a slot to look for because the shifter trick
probably isn't in the title, but you might find it by searching the Rivbike
address in your email.

Or just try it! I have one of those SunRace shifters on my Susie and it
looks like it would slide right on the quill stem, easy peasy.

2021-02-09 Thread Justin Kennedy
Gotcha. The Riv-Nitto RBW51
 works
well as a front basket support too and has a narrower profile. I have also
used a Mark's Rack with long struts. It worked well even with a Wald 139
(the big basket).

Just your lucky day Jim ! I found it here :

It's the IRD quill stem shifter mount.

Though other 22.2 mounts for a whole lot less are found on ebay.

William Henderson in PDX after an accident had a wheel set built with the
same hubs I'm considering, if he could chime in that would be excellent.

 On with the question,

Does anybody have experience with the Velo Orange Grand Cru 135mm QR
Shimano hub? Specifically, has it held up over time? How does it feel? Does
it spin freely? How does it sound? Meaning is it silent or does it have a
loud ratcheting noise? What were your initial impressions of the build
 quality and then later impressions.

It's my aesthetic, I just see my new to me Atlantis built with silver
shiny hubs otherwise I'd build my new wheels with a DT Swiss 350 rear hub
and be done. I'm considering a White Industries hub but that's close to
$200 more over the VO hub. Just debating whether the extra $$ is worth it?

I'm going with the Velocity Cliffhangers, wish they came in silver :(
Planning on running schwabe g ones in 2.25" evolutions for cush and speed.
If you have a recommendation on rims that will allow for tubeless, decent
tire profile in silver please lmk. FYI not going with the HED Belgian rims
 at $165 nope!

I'm also looking for the Riv stem shifters currently out of stock on
the Riv Hq site. If anyone has a pair that they're willing to part with let
 me know?

 Best Regards,

Hugh in Sunny SoCal Los Angeles to be exact.

Since I'm honorable and might as well ask another question. I plan on
running aluminum albatross bars any recommendations for grips. My
preference is a easily removed grip like the Ergon which I have. Is there
an esi like grip that's removes simply?

And I've got another one new in box still in transit. (should be here in

I figured if someone wanted a pair, I'll throw in the new one rather than

For the pair: $150
For just the used one: $75

Re: [RBW] Re: Wanted: 52cm Clem H frame or Bombadil

2021-02-09 Thread Alex K

YES! very happy to hear the good news. That's not an easy bike to
replace. As I was riding around the Marin Headlands yesterday on my 52
Grilver Clem H I came to the realization that it has slowly, zippily, but
surely crept into the "this might be my favorite bike I've ever ridden, let
alone owned" category. And with this ecstatic thought came the equally
troubling realization that, living in San Francisco, I could be relieved of
my Clem at any time by any thief worth their salt, seeing as how I have to
(triple) lock my bike to a concrete post in a rented motorcycle space in
the basement of the apartment building next door to mine . All part of
life in a tiny studio with a partner who is not so fond of access-blocking
vehicles in what little of a hallway that we have. SOcongrats!
And happy riding. And cherish that unparalleled ride quality. Here's to
hoping this will be the last "looking to replace a Clem" post for a while,
and that maybe someday we'll wake up to a RBW e-mail with the heading CLEM
H's ARE BACK AND UP FOR PRE-SALE AT 12:01PM NEXT WEDNESDAY!
Peace

Re: [RBW] Fun with Lights!

2021-02-09 Thread Matthew P
This is fantastic. Looks great.
Did you use any guides online that were helpful? I'd like to get better at
this stuff.
Also looking for a basic guide on dyno hub and lights troubleshooting with
a multimeter, but I can search and then start a new thread.

[RBW] stem mounted shifter for front derailer

Hi, I was wondering if someone can direct me to a link that I can recall,

2021-02-09 Thread Mark Roland
Great looking build, Ash. What black seat post are you planning to use? All
black components but keeping the brown saddle would look pretty awesome.

The swoop top tube is actually a big plus for me. In addition to being
functional, that graceful line complements the fillet-brazed construction.
It give the bicycles a distinctive character.

2021-02-09 Thread Mark Roland
Sharp looking build! What black seat post will you be using? I think the
all black but keeping the saddle brown would look fantastic.

In terms of the swoop, that is a big positive for me in the looks
department, in addition to making a lot of sense from a functional
standpoint. It gives the bike elegance and a flow, and it goes so well with
the construction method. Much more character than your basic diamond frame.
Z. Truly a beautiful bicycle, so much presence.

[RBW] Build Ideas for New Sam H

2021-02-09 Thread Erik Shearer
I decided to get in on the Sam action last week and purchased a gold 54
frame. I've been thinking through the build and am interested to hear a
from other owners about what worked, what didn't, and to see some photos!

So far, I'm moving toward a road-oriented set up on this bike, including
drop bars and maybe 32-38-ish road tires. My Appaloosa is already set up
as my burly, load-carrying bike with 50mm gravel kings, racks, and beefy
wheels. My Atlantis is set up for trails with fat knobbies, bull moose
bars, and a 1x11 drivetrain. I want this as my lighter, fun bike for road
rides with an occasional short dart across a gravel connecting road.

Tell me (and show me) about what you've done with your Sams to keep me
amused while I recover from a broken hand!

[RBW] Re: about the IRD Alpina-d front derailer,,,

2021-02-09 Thread samcr...@gmail.com
I heard back from IRD about this, and here's what they say:
"The F has not been made for at lest 6 years and was designed for the
shifter pull ratio that upright style (shimano mtn) shifter had. The
Alpina D was a triple designed around the shimano road pull ratios.

The current model of the Alpina is the D version and uses drop bar pull
ratio (shimano road). "

This response lead me to researching more about shifter pull ratios, so
naturally I turned to Sheldon:

"The ratio of cable movement to derailer movement differs with Shimano's "
road " vs. "MTB
 " front derailers.
This can cause indexing
problems
if you use a "road" front derailer with upright
 handlebars or a "MTB"
front derailer with drop handlebars. This is a concern if you are running
an indexed front shifter, such as Shimano STI or RapidFire shifters.

It is not a problem if you are using a friction system, such as bar-end
shifters or downtube shifters. It is also not a problem with ratcheting
systems such as Campagnolo Ergo."

I run all friction, all the time, so no issues. I ordered the IRD front
derailer yesterday. Thanks all!

I did this on a vintage Ed Litton mountain bike with a asymmetrical 122
(121.5?) spindle and a triple crankset.

[RBW] Re: Wanted: Nitto/Rivendell RBW52F Basket Rack

2021-02-09 Thread Jared Wilson

Thanks Justin,

I spoke with Vince last week and they had 14 in stock so I know that's an
option.

What I'm not sure about is the size, and I'm slightly more interested in
the Pass & Stow 3 rail but figured if I could get into a RBW52 for less
than new I might be able to scratch the itch.

Re: [RBW] Re: Personal Experiences Request.

2021-02-09 Thread David Person
Hugh, too bad (for me) that you need 650b Voyagers, as I have a set of
700c Voyager rims hanging up. I built them up into wheels but decided to
go with Dyads. Could have made you a good deal. I do have a set of silver
VP Vice pedals in excellent condition, if you are in need of a pair. I
gotta get around to listing some of items it's time to purge from the
collection.

[RBW] Re: The joy of winter riding, and how do you keep your toes warm?

2021-02-09 Thread Fullylugged
Coming in late on this thread. Clipping in will make your feet colder as
the cleat is a heat sink. Even if you clip in normally, going to platforms
in winter is a thought. If it's just cold but not too windy, thick wool
socks in sandals does keep feet warm and allows moisture to wick away. I
have several pairs of wool socks in thin, medium and heavy thickness. I
also have sock liners with reflective material that bounces heat back at my
feet. In wind or wet, the sealskins already mentioned are good. they allow
wicking out but not water getting in. They need socks inside. If it's
warmer, say in the 32F to 45F range, I just wear leather sneakers a half
size larger (also as noted above by others) with medium weight wool socks.

I never would have tried sandals and wool socks, but a northern randonneuse
came down for one of my 300K winter brevets a few years ago and that's what
she had on. The set up worked so I gave it a try.

[RBW] Re: The joy of winter riding, and how do you keep your toes warm?

2021-02-09 Thread Nick Payne
In our winter here we are often riding in the morning in temperatures a few
degrees below zero (Celcius) - say low 20s Fahrenheit. As I use MTB pedals,
I wear Shimano MW7 winter boots - they're not cheap, but they do a good job
of keeping my feet warm when out on rides of two or three hours in those
sort of temperatures.

If you tend to suffer from cold hands, lobster mitts are good, as they
minimise the amount of surface area through which heat is lost. I have some
Carnac ones, and my wife has some Pearl Izumi:
