Oh, that's nice! I bought my AHHilsen, also pre-loved, 1 3/4 years ago as

[RBW] Converting 650b Hilsen to Rene Herse 42/26 cranks

2021-05-04 Thread KenP
Hi Doug,
My Appaloosa needed a much longer bottom bracket.
RH shipped me a 121 & LBS had me return the BB because it needed to be
even longer. The RH crank has a different feel because of the Q factor.
It puts the legs closer together. It weighs about the same. Advantages
that you customize it with the rings you want, a longer/shorter crank arm,
finish color, etc. The rings have a different bolt pattern than the XD2. I
switched front derailleur and I switched to a RH crank from XD2 and am
satisfied. I had been having trouble with the XD2 having the chain drop
between the rings. Riv's own new crank might be nice as well if they have
them available.

Hi Robert:

My apologies - not trying to turn this post about your two terrific new
bikes into a thread about shifters! Good to know about the ratcheting feel
on the Silver 2s. Thanks!

Andy, given the frame size you require I can see why bar ends would be
optimal for you. I'm nowhere close to you in height so I can go back to the
future shifting from the DT or install the excellent shifting Shimano
bar-enders.

Shimano CX70 Cantilever brakes. I have an extra set that I can live
without. Lightly used. You'll get both calipers (one whole bike's worth),
both link wires. All the spacers and bolts to work with a wide array of

Nitto R-14 rack. This is the rear rack with the tombstone that was/is
ideal for large Sackville saddlebags. You'll receive the top platform, a
full set of the Nitto Daruma bolt hardware assemblies for grabbing both
sets of stays. You will receive one pair of stays, medium length,
straight. You will need to buy another set of long stays from Riv to make
it complete. $100 shipped to me. This is the item you'll buy from
Rivendell: Nitto Rack Hardware - 35cm straight struts, pair – Rivendell
Bicycle Works (rivbike.com)

[RBW] WTB: Rivendell Readers #00-10

2021-05-04 Thread Eric Marth
Hi all — As some of you may recall I've been collecting printed matter from
Rivendell: Readers, catalogs and flyers from the past.

I've got a ton of stuff but I'm missing the first run of readers, from
issue zero through number 10. Is there anyone willing to part with their
run? If so, please let me know!

Thanks,
Eric

Re: [RBW] Converting 650b Hilsen to Rene Herse 42/26 cranks

2021-05-04 Thread Mark Allen
I made a very similar switch from a 46-36-26 Sugino to a 42-26 White
Industries VBC, both with an 11-34 9 speed cassette. It's been a great move
– I don't miss the few high gears I lost, I still have plenty of really low
gears for loaded climbing, and shifting is a bit simpler. The bottom
bracket spindle length with the Sugino triple was 118mm long, and the White
Industries support docs suggested a 113mm length was ideal for that
crankset so I swapped those out, although the dark art of chainlines is a
bit of a mystery to me so I don't know if keeping the 118mm would have had
any adverse effects. I kept the front triple derailleur which worked fine
with friction shifting after adjusting the limit screws. I've since moved
to a 10 speed 11-34 cassette just because it was what I could find when I
needed to replace it late last year, but everything still works flawlessly.

[RBW] WTT — Brooks B17 Special, Honey for Black

2021-05-04 Thread Michael J.
After some recent frame swaps, I am looking to trade my Brooks B17 Special
in honey for something that is black. Condition of the saddle is very
nice—it’s not super broken in yet. I’d swap it for the same saddle in
black, or something sprung (B67 or B72) in black as well.

Here’s a pic:

More pictures available upon request. Contact off list to work something
out.

[RBW] Re: First 40+ miles...

2021-05-04 Thread ascpgh
My bar end shifter knee strikes stopped once I settled on the right width
of bars with the right amount of flare, regardless of the popular choices
of the time.

My legs are long for my height, so frame size and cockpit set up have my
hands far from DT shifters, bar ends have long been my answer. Every bike
has been unique due to fit and set up. I held on to a set of NOS set of
Simplex/Mavic friction shifters for possible use on my 650B rando last year
but when I mocked up the rolling chassis to try the reach, the bosses were
just too far down. "Shift" was right, my whole body to reach the lever and
move the chain over a cog.

I accepted that I use bar ends and made sure my new bar provided for knee
clearance then I gifted the shifters to one of the mechanics who was
piecing together a Waterford rando for a big west coast ride and they were
perfect for his Rinko needs and the trains.
