[RBW] FS: Tires/Small Parts - Nitto Struts, Frame Pumps, .

2021-05-07 Thread David B
Doing a deep dive of garage cleaning - goal is to not have any extra parts
- just what I need to maintain bikes I have (Clem, Redwood, Clementine).

Prices below do NOT include shipping - which will be actual USPS costs from
60171.
Contact me off list if you have any questions.
Happy to do local pickup if you can pickup in River Grove, IL.
Photos upon request.
Thanks,
David

1. Nitto Rack Struts - 12cm, pair, appear to be new - $6

2. Nitto Rack Struct - 18cm, pair, appear to be new - $8

3. Nitto Rack Struts - 39cm, pair, appear to be used, but are nice and
straight - $14

4. Topeak Master Blast Frame Pump - size XL I think, 59cm length
uncompressed, silver - I stripped off the logo and lightly polished the
aluminum, used, some light dings - $15

5. Zefal HP-X-4 Frame Pump - black - 58cm length uncompressed, used - $10

6. Suntour Aero Road Brake Levers - came on my Redwood when I bought it
used many years ago - these feel slightly different in hand than Shimano
levers, feel more like a non-aero in a good way, I think they're an Alpha
Cyclone series, if that existed - $25

7. Vee Rubber V12 Tires - 29 x 1.95, used, some tread wear, but lots of
wear still left in them, had these on my Clem when it was setup as a kid
hauler - $10 pair

8. Maxxis Ardent Tires - tan sidewalls, 29 x 2.4", I briefly swapped this
in on my Clem for more rough stuff - $40

9. Panaracer Gravelking Slick Tires - 700c x 38mm, black, lightly used, had
these on my Redwood before I finally committed to 650b - $50 pair

10. GearClamp - these:
https://www.rivbike.com/collections/cassettes/products/gear-clamp-ss - but
a PAIR for $20

[RBW] Re: Schmidt Wire with B Lights?

2021-05-07 Thread Kieran J
Agree with Ian about ordering what you need from PWC. They have everything
you need (and then some) and are very cheerful to deal with.

I find the B wiring easier to work with because it's smaller in diameter
and the conductors are easy to separate and terminate. The Schmidt co-ax
requires a bit more effort and precision to put the connectors on. The main
tool you need is some decent wire strippers from just about any hardware
store.

I have never bothered to use solder to terminate them. Even sloppy crimps
with pliers will do the job with some heat shrink over it. It's good skill
to have, even at the 'crapsmanship' level, if you plan to run custom
lengths inside fork legs, inside fender lips, etc.

[RBW] Re: Schmidt Wire with B Lights?

2021-05-07 Thread Ian A

If it is to run out to the tail light, the connectors from the light
(assuming B/Schmidt etc) require 2.8mm female spade connectors. Either
crimp or solder to the coaxial cable and heat shrink to insulate. 2.8mm
spade connectors aren't too available at hardware stores. The connectors
for the main light to the hub are 4.8mm (effectively 5mm) connectors, and
it is easy enough to find 5mm female spade connectors at most hardware
stores.

Best thing to do would be to contact Peter White for the right connectors.
If you know the length of tail light run you need, he would be able to sell
you a complete run, ready crimped and heat shrinked etc. Having struggled
with crimping those connectors and going through quite a few before
successful crimpage was achieved, I'd recommend going the professional
route. (Although my amateur wiring handywork has held up fine over a few
years).

Anyone lucky enough to already have his/her 55 Platy, could you measure the
effective top tube and post that here? If it matters, I run the seat
height around 72cm.

I sent Analog Cycles Losco and Albatross bars today (both already in my

I'm curious while I wait.

[RBW] Losco vs Albatross 6mm Additional Sweep back--an additional 6cm

2021-05-07 Thread Roberta
I placed the Albatross on top of the Losco, lining up the clamp area. The
Losco extends back an additional 6cm.

I had looked previously and couldn't find this measurement. Perhaps this
information is interesting to someone.

Re: [RBW] Re: Basket Rack with Panniers?

2021-05-07 Thread Collin A
Jay - agreed that the Basket rack is not the best tool for the job, but its
the tool I have right now and i'm not in the mood to spend another $280 on
a (very nice) rack. I also don't know if I would like the impact the front
load would have on the bike yet, hence trying to use what I have and give
it a shot for a shorter trip (if its safe).

Mike - the panniers I have are the swanky PR ones that basically have those
straps built into the carriers, so it would be redundant. BUT that is a
good idea none-the-less when dealing with the "elastic-hook" style panniers

Bill - Thanks, the redundancy of the irish strap would be helpful. I also
like the idea of drilling the T-plate for the extra daruma (I have a pair
sitting in my parts box, so lucky me!), but not ready for that commitment
yet. I think I'll give a shot with the irish strap and hit the nearby
trails with a camping load and see how it goes (or doesn't).

Any other thoughts or concerns?

Re: [RBW] Re: Basket Rack with Panniers?

2021-05-07 Thread Jay Lonner
Collin, I think you’d be better off with a Pass and Stow rack for that
application. (That’s what Michael appears to have in the pictures he sent.) I
have one on my Hunq, and my wife has a Basket Rack on her Cheviot. The Basket
Rack is great for lighter loads, but has too many points of
articulation/loosening for heavy loads in rough stuff. The Pass and Stow is
designed to do exactly what you describe, and is worth every penny.

[RBW] Re: Basket Rack with Panniers?

2021-05-07 Thread Bill Lindsay
I think it's worth a try but there are multiple places to add redundancy.

If the diving board fails the whole assembly will rotate forward and that
will be bad. You should run an Irish strap to prevent that rotation.
The telescoping lower strut should be straight vertical, but various
twisting motions will make the single Nitto daruma try to unscrew. If it
were me, I'd run a zip tie around the strut and the T plate to help limit
rotation there if it wants to loosen. I'd almost consider drilling a
through hole up high on that T-plate for a second Daruma. That would be
super-redundant and would prevent rotation permanently.

[RBW] Basket Rack with Panniers?

2021-05-07 Thread Collin A
Howdy Folks,

I wanted to poll some of the rivendell hive-mind wisdom here. I'm messing
around with my current bikepacking setup and wanted to give a shot with
front panniers to see how the bike handles. I don't have a dedicated
pannier rack for the front of my bike, but I do have the RBW Basket Rack
and the panniers I have do indeed fit. This
Rack: https://www.rivbike.com/collections/racks/products/a7s5klhjwe-oith-lk5465a

So the question is, does anyone with more experience with low-rider-esque
bag setups see an issue with using the basket rack with panniers on
bouncier surfaces? There is only the connection at the fork crown and the
drop outs (no mid-fork struts), and that is what is giving me pause.

Thanks,
Collin in Sacramento

Re: [RBW] Re: Pseudo-Rivendell Thread?

2021-05-07 Thread Patrick Moore
Thanks. Currently have the fat-tire Matthews here in Ft Worth for a week.
Crank on this one is a 175 mm Ritchey Logic 110/74, and that on the hub
geared bike is an old 170 mm TA Pro 5 Vis.

The light mount is really a rack support, except that the builder messed up
the lowriders; hope eventually to have them fixed.

Here’s my partial build. I’ll be getting it in a few weeks.
