My Clem came with a single layer of clear material protection. Hard to see but it is there. Seems inadequate though? That is a long chain & I imagine it might sag quite a bit at times. In addition the cable running below the stay nearly hugs the stay. On other bikes I have experience paint

Ryan, My experience is just like Laing's, the whole chainstay is wrapped and I didn't notice for months. What I believe Grant means by "slap guard" is those old timey braze-ons touring bikes used to have that you would stretch a piece of leather between. He's not a stickler for paint staying
