[RBW] Re: Thinking of getting A Homer- does it feel quick?

2022-03-29 Thread Mark Schneider
I don't know about the new design, but I've had a Waterford Homer since
2011 or there about. I love the smooth, comfy ride, and it's plenty quick
enough. Not fast like my old Masi or my custom Terraferma, but plenty fast
enough, especially with Rene Herse Tires. The Homer is more comfortable and
rides similar width tires as the Terraferma, but I have ridden some pretty
gnarly single track on that Homer I would not try on my other "fast"
framsets. If I had to have only one bike, I always thought I'd pick the
Homer. I do wish it had canti-brake mounts I'd run my favorite brake ever,
the Paul Mini-Moto's!
I also have an Atlantis, and it's more of a mountain bike, setup with
upright bars, the Homer is faster than the Atlantis, but I love riding them
both.
I've seen plenty of Brevet riders on Homers, great long distance bikes are
both fast and comfortable, I'm sure the new ones ride beautifully, are even
more comfortable and probably faster downhill.

 I

[RBW] Re: Thinking of getting A Homer- does it feel quick?

2022-03-29 Thread Jason Glenn
Graham,

I believe you said elsewhere that you're looking for one of the older
Homers. I got a 2011 Homer about 6 months ago. My first Riv. It's
fantastic. I put 38 mm Soma Shikoro tires on it -- may try 44s when they
wear out -- and use it for my commute (with a rear rack and panniers) in
Los Angeles. Take it longer (30-40 mile) rides several times a week. Have
done spend a few full days in the saddle with long climbs and descents. I
literally couldn't be happier or imagine anything I'd want to do that I
can't.

I've had a few short spins on a friend's Hunq, double TT Sam, older
Atlantis, and a zippy custom. All really wonderful. Find myself
fantasizing about getting another Riv (Joe App or Atlantis) to complement
the homer, maybe with fatter tires, front basket, swept back bars, etc.,
but every time I do so, I ask myself why, as it would mean that I would
have less time on my Homer that is so comfortable and smooth. It's such a
joy to ride and a true all-rounder, just as a quick as my old Raleigh
Reynolds 753 road bike, when I want it to be, but far more versatile and
handles better, for sure.

Good luck with our search, but if you can find one at a reasonable price, I
can't imagine you'd be disappointed. Mine is all that I'd hoped it would
be and more.

Maybe you wouldn’t mind holding a big beautiful creamsicle orange Ram until

Further and further from topic, but indulge me, it might add a bit of spice
to your dull lives: I had to sell the upscale Sprite, and was propositioned
by several brothers of my father's secretary, a statuesque, yough

calls to my father. She told her brothers about my sale, and they came out
to our house to view and negotiate, but we could not agree on a price.
While most Indians of that place and time were small by corn-fed American
Anglo standards (my father was 6'2" English/Scotts-Irish Southern American,
tho' enlightened -- he married a Filipina in 1954), her brothers were even
more majestic than she, easily as tall or taller than my father, and stout

2022-03-29 Thread Roberta
I replied to your other thread asking about a zippy bike and gave my full
endorsement to the Homer. I just love riding that bike.

For around town though, when it's an on/off/on/off/stop at
light/start/stop...oh, pothole, I much prefer my Platy. I built it up
light-sh with great tires, rims, a 1x and Dyno lighting. That bike goes
with me on about every other long ride, sharing duties with Homer. Platy
is my commuter ride. As Johnny said, much of it is with the build.

If I'd have to keep one bike, I'd be happy with either.

2022-03-29 Thread Johnny Alien
The wheelset is gone. Here is an updated list. Help me clear out my stash.

   1. *Tektro Quartz V Brake Set* - These are brand new and pulled from my
new Clem. They are labelled as "Quartz" and they are silver and nice. I
only pulled them because I had some new Deores I wanted to try out. *$30*
   2. *Clem Saddle* - Nice black padded saddle that comes with the Clems
and maybe some other Riv completes. Fairly wide so good for someone looking
for something cheap and wider than a B17. *$35*
   3. *Busch+Müller Eyc N Plus Lumotec IQ2* - This is new but not in a box.
Has the wire you need. 50 lux. One doller per lux. *$50*
   4. *Altus Rear Derailer* - This is not the cool big pulley Altus. This
one was new on my Clem. Can be indexed up to 9 speeds and if you want the
Shimano trigger shifter that was on the Clem I can throw that in for a
couple bucks more. Nothing at all wrong with it. Does everything you want a
rear derailer to do. I just wanted to put a big pulley Altus on because I
had one and they look cool. *$30*
   5. *Deore Front Derailer* - Again this is new from the Clem. Nothing
wrong with this either I just went with a 1x setup. No need for it. *$20*
   6. *Sunrace Thumbshifters (Left inner/Right outer)* - These are the cool
friction thumb shifters that Riv put on everything for awhile. They click
when you shift but aren't indexed.Info is on the Riv site. I have two of
these and both are new. One came from the Clem and one came from a set I
bought where I only needed one). These can be used for the front derailer
mounted inside the handlebar on the left or for the rear mounted on the
outside on the right. Technically you could use both of these on one bike
but that might look weird. Grant might approve. *$25 each.*

2022-03-29 Thread Christian B-H
Mark- You're probably correct on your insights! I received a helpful reply
from Bill although I missed out on his bike while deliberating, and agree
with your assessment of setting the bike up similarly to James which is
also pretty much the direction Johnny's response was taking me.

Lance and Jon- Thanks for the messages. I'd love to come down to Littleton
and ride sometime. I know Andrew on this group has a 2001 Toyo Atlantis and
would also be interested in riding. Front Range Riv Riders is not *yet *a
club, but anyone Riding Riv's on the Front Range is welcome to it!

I'll be in Bear Creek Lake Park this Saturday morning the 2nd if a 10:30 or
11am ride might work out of the Littleton area, and if not, could do
Sunday. Otherwise, potentially April 17 or the May 8th or May 15th, or a
Saturday at 2pm or afterwards on the 16th of April or 7th or 14th of May.

If anyone is interested feel free to send me an email directly at
beit...@gmail.com and I'll put together an email to organize.

 to
what they would push for me. It looks like you might be exactly the same
with the Atlantis frame. A PBH of 89.5 is the minimum size that that they
would recommend for the 59 which would put you at the very bottom for that
size and at the top for the 55. That makes it tricky and a lot will come
down to personal preference. I hope you can find a good source for a try
 out!!

2022-03-29 Thread Emily Guise
Hands down, IMO, get a Platypus! Honestly SO good for riding around town,
it's super comfortable and stable. Climbs like a dream, fast on the flats
to speed through those yellow lights, easy step through frame for hopping
on and off. Looks gorgeous and you will receive many compliments, but it
can definitely handle all-too-frequent potholes and unpaved gravel sections
of streets (maybe that's just in Portland?). I have a basket up front and a
rear rack for carrying stuff and they don't weigh the bike down at all, and
they're fantastic for errands.

Re: [RBW] Re: Beausage

2022-03-29 Thread Bicycle Belle Ding Ding!
I was SO hoping Pam would chime in here. I love that post about her Betty
Foy. What are we at for miles now, Pam? I bet you’re close to 65,000. I
should get an odometer on my bike - I know how many miles I ride per month
and year (Apple Watch) but I don’t track the miles according to which
bicycle I ride. Would be nice to know how many miles I get out of tires and
components, too.

Re: [RBW] Re: Coffee Grinder Question

2022-03-29 Thread Will Boericke
Blade grinders are totally fine for drip coffee. I'm not sure you'd notice
a difference there. If you're making espresso, the burr grinder is a
must. I have to say, for crusty bike tinkerers, Baratza is right in our
wheelhouse. All the parts and instructions are online. I've had mine
apart dozens of times and upgraded the internals along the way. As far as
using a drill with a hand grinder, I'm not sure I see the need to
reverse-engineer an electric grinder, especially for the amount of coffee I
grind (a pound + / week).

2022-03-29 Thread Johnny Alien
Having a proto Gallop (designed to be a zippier road bike) and now a Clem
(designed to be a do all modern mountain bike) I can say that the overall
opinion that the Clem is not as sprite as other models comes down to builds
more than frame. I can easily say that if I threw heavier commuter tires on
the Gallop and added some racks and a Dynamo wheel and then on the flip
side gave the Clem some light components and nice light/supple tires that
the Clem would feel much zippier than the Gallop. I would argue that there
isn't a bike in the lineup that couldnt do what you want to do and be a
whole lot of fun to ride while you are doing it. Maybe not the Roadeo but
that's about it.

2022-03-29 Thread Rusty Click
Graham,
I live in Pittsburgh, PA and if your travels take you anywhere near...say
somewhere between CLE and IAD, I'd bring you my 60 Sam to ride. I also
have a MUSA 62 Atlantis that's set up as a tourer if you'd like to try it.
I use the Sam very much like you plan to do and love the ride. I've even
had racks on it and used it for weeklong touring (before Atlantis), and it
held up fine even if a little out of its wheelhouse.
