2022-12-08 Thread Jared Wilson
Hey Max,

Can't speak to the "why" aspect, but you're not crazy in your observation.

We have (3) pairs of the BL BT III and (1) pair of the Bubbly pedals and
they're not in the same category. Not to say there's anything wrong with
the Bear Traps, but the Bubbly pedals are on an entirely different level.

That said, either option good and you shouldn't regret your decision, you
did what works for the time being and maybe later on down the road you get
to try the alternative, but I wouldn't dwell on it all that much.

[RBW] Pedals, MKS XC Bear Trap III vs. MKS Bubble Pedals

2022-12-08 Thread maxcr
Hi Everyone,

I decided to get new pedals for the bike I'm building. First I went to my
LBS (Cambridge Bicycles) and they suggested the Simworks Bubbly pedals - I
really liked the spin on them and the looks, but unfortunately they only
had the olives in stock. They sent me to the Simworks website, but the
polished were sold out. (Their next order was going to be in about a month
at best)

Reading through the forum I saw good comments on the Blue Lug Bear Trap III
and ordered them in silver.

They arrived today and I'm surprised because they feel much less smooth
than the bubbly ones. To be fair they are much less expensive $62 vs $100
but still, is this normal?

Is it the lack of sealed bearings that affects rotational performance?

Will I feel a real difference if I go with one over the other?

Thanks for your opinions and knowledge.

The other day I saw an orange Hubbuhubbuh at Blue Lug Kamiuma branch and it

I hope to see the tandem bike is running in Tokyo very soon because tandems

I like to see people are riding Rivendells in a lot countries too! It's

It seems like most of you have 2 different type Rivs for different
occasions as I was vaguely imaging for my future as well.

As Keith pointed out the tricky point is that if you get second bike
for a different purpose which you barely have chances to go, you will end
up to ride just one but not both of them.
That made me think that I should get the second Riv if I "need" it
while I got my first one mostly because I did "want" it.
(Well it's really hard to separate these feelings though)
Anyway I am going to ride my Platypus as much as possible for now and
will see if I need another one:)

Otherwise actually it's a really simple thing. Having 2 bikes you
really love and "ride all the time and alternate daily" as John said.
John, if I'm not mistaken I have seen your Hunq on Blue Lug's blog
before. You have lived in Japan? The Hunq and the Atlantis are both so
 beautiful!

adore both-but they're extraordinarily different, despite being a natural
and logical evolution. I really enjoyed the reference of the thread "a

The evolution of Rivendell's is absolutely fascinating to me as there
has never been a hang up for changing tried and true models. XO-1 - ALL
Rounder - TOYO Atlantis - MUSA Atlantis - MIT Atlantis. People are still
obsessive with each rendition of a concept over its evolution.

SOoo long story short. I would choose the Hunqapillar. Hands down.

hands down, a Legolas.. ideally a Taiwan-made frame to save a little coin..

I just picked up a new-to-me Rambouillet, so I'm covered there for now.. :)

My Hunqapillar is the favorite in the stable, but I think a case can really
be made to bring back the Bleriot. Classic geometry, MIT (I believe) to
keep the price reasonable, and I'd argue that the decal
 is the best Riv has

Re: [RBW] Re: New Sam Hillbornes

2022-12-08 Thread Guy LeVan
The HiHo silver looks wonderful, and will be a neutral enough palette to
absorb plenty of colorful bits. It is nice to see a different color on the
Sam. I’ve seen the LimeOlive on the Clem L, and it is dazzling in
sunlight. Both color options play well with the cream highlight paint, and
you can hardly go wrong with either. Looks like only the 57 in LimeOlive
has sold out at this point. HiHo……!

Seem to be selling way faster than the Platys (assuming a similar # of

So why call it a Road-UNO ? Because it can be a seamless single
speed and just because it can be used as such doesn't mean it
can't/shouldn't have a hanger for a tensioner or derailleur. It adds to
 the

[RBW] Re: New Roaduno Dropouts

2022-12-08 Thread Joe Bernard
It's an outlier as far as what most people are looking for in a frame like
this, but a member here many years ago put an old rear derailer (Shimano
200GS I think) with a bolt on hanger on a Quickbeam so he could use a
wide-range double crank with fd derailer to give it a big top gear plus
hill climber granny (it was in a Rivendell Reader).

I'm guessing after all the 2-speed experiments Grant and Will have done
with chain tensioners they figured it couldn't hurt to have the option on
RoadUNO.

Another thought: Does the presence of a hanger mean that the dropout will

[RBW] Re: New Roaduno Dropouts

2022-12-08 Thread iamkeith
Makes sense, but it's still curious to me that they only used the Frank
Jones Sr. dropout on that one model. (Or, maybe a Rosco model, too?). Im
kind of suspecting that, with 3D design printing capabilities, it might be
just as easy to come up with a new part if and when it is needed.

I'm curious to see if this means there'll be some extra cable routing
options on the Roaduno, or if that'll be left to clamp-on devices or zip
ties, for someone who wished to use a derailleur. Part of the beauty of a
single-speed is the cleanness of not having unused stops. On the other
hand, I'm brazing on some extra housing stops to my Quickbeam - but for a
Sturmey Archer 3-speed, not a derailleur.

The "chain tensioner" feature doesn't make sense to me.

Re: [RBW] Is there a 31.8 clamp drop bar comparable to a Nitto Noodle 54cm?

2022-12-08 Thread Conway Bennett
Scott,

I ride tumbleweed prospector bars for the last 6 months with a discord
fingerling stem, but I like drops but got used to the width. I did
purchase the new 54 cm Nitto noodle, but I have not ridden it yet. My dark
horse pick for wide bars is the vo rando bar that comes in 50 cm wide.
Since I have these, I can't justify the Renee Herse option at 4x the price.

The Hunq and the Atlantis are both so
 beautiful!

[RBW] Re: How you choose 2 Rivendells?

2022-12-08 Thread Bill Rhea
Hi Masa,

Funny I was thinking of this the other day... What if I could keep just one
of my Riv bikes?

I would have to go with the first generation, grey/red 62cm Waterford
Hunquapillar. Day night, rain shine, commuting, long multi-day tours or
grocery runs... Always comfortable, reliable, and fun! Has more miles on
it than any other in my fleet

After that I'd have to say my first gen, Toyo AHH. This is my winter road
bike, with fenders, Schmidt generator light and French-style handlebar bag
on the Mark's rack with a VO decaleur. Ready for all conditions, but for
light loads on long day rides.

Others in the fleet (yeah, I know, I've got a condition here...). I build
this up over 30 years, but what can I say? I like Grant's bikes!

63 cm Romulus with Gran Comp centerpull brakes, no racks, 38c tires. My
summer road bike that's also great on dirt roads
64cm Quickbeam with Bertoud steel fenders, with a Sturmey Archer S3X hub.
My commuter of many years but less practical now that I live in super hilly
area in Napa
Size XL Susie/Wolbis with a fillet faceplate Nitto stem and Tosco
extra-wide bars. My off road "klunker" but also great on the super steep,
beat-up roads in my area
Size M orange Hubbuhubbuh. The.Best.Tandem.Ever
59cm orange XO1 with a looong Nitto MTB stem from the 80's and Albatross
bars (my stepson has it now). Always was a little small for me, but got
ridden tons back in the day

I love seeing all the photos from BlueLug, RivSoc, and all the Japanese Riv
enthusiasts on IG! Makes the world feel a lot smaller!

Cheers,

-br

Hey Masa-san,

You are lucky, indeed! Blue Lug is such a great shop; there are so many
beautiful bikes and fine parts to enjoy.

I rode to Shikoku on the Shimanami-kaido from Onomichi. This is a
spectacular way to go there. You must try it sometime. Here are GaiaGPS
tracks and photos if
you are interested.

Re: [RBW] Re: ROADUNO - a new singlespeed!

2022-12-08 Thread Coal Bee Rye Anne
I like 'em. I'm certainly curious if the hanger addition will be
accompanied with any other spec changes like going from 120-130/132.5/135mm
rear hub spacing or just as a nice option on the 120mm frame. I recently
just found a crack on one of my single speeds reducing my fleet to a Clem
and two old fixer-upper single speeds. Apparently the cracked frame may be
repairable but out of warranty so depending on cost for repair plus some
potential add-ons that would make the repair more worthwhile I'm thinking
it may be wiser to hold off and just put that towards an eventual Roaduno
purchase. Either way, looking forward to see how these turn out.

2022-12-08 Thread Masa
Hi Jim, I too am really enjoying this thread to know how the people
ride/plan their Rivendells!
I can easily tell that how your Rivs are beautiful even from the head
badges:)

Can I ask you how you describe the feel of the shorter wheelbase Rivs
please?
Since my only Riv is Platypus which has longer wheelbase and so do majority
of the current line up of Riv, I'm not familiar with the shorter ones.
The more I like the feel of the longer wheelbase Riv, the more I'm curious
how is the feel of the shorter ones.
I would like to know how you feel them!

Thanks,
Masa

2022-12-08 Thread Shoji Takahashi
I'm also v interested in RoadUno as "my last Riv"...

Spec'ing a hanger on these trackends means that Riv can use it for other
frames-- maybe they'll make a 135-spaced frame using these? Or someone will
request a custom?

That said, these are prototypes, so who knows what will show up in the
final form.

Looking forward to it!

Anyone ride the prototypes RoadUno frames at RivHQ? How does it compare to
the Quickbeam? or present offerings?

John, it was actually you and your Hunq on the blog post! I have been to

Luckily Blue Lug is my local bike shop so it didn't take long for me to be

 Hey Masa,

I'm stoked to own two Rivs- a Waterford Hunqapillar and a Toyo
 Atlantis.

The Hunq was my first bike from Rivendell which I bought new in 2015. I
had the great pleasure of working with Keven M on ordering and dialing the
bike in. Right out of the box it was a go-anywhere, do-anything bike, and
it has been tested to its limits all over the world. Or, should I say, it
has tested my limits! This is the One-Bike-To-Rule-Them-All as far as I'm
 concerned.

I was fortunate enough to find a Toyo Atlantis a couple of summers ago
in this group. I chose the Atlantis because I still wanted a trail-worthy
bike that could handle a load, but also one that could be pared down for a
lighter, more nimble ride. Further, I wanted a bike made in Japan by Toyo
because...well...because of my love affair with Japanese dedication to
craftsmanship. It's a beautiful bicycle that provides a dreamy ride.

As far as the problem of bikes not being ridden enough is concerned, my
solution has been to ride all the time and alternate daily- when the Hunq
rolls on Monday, then the Atlantis rocks on Tuesday.

 Cheers, John

Re: [RBW] Is there a 31.8 clamp drop bar comparable to a Nitto Noodle 54cm?

2022-12-08 Thread Steven Sweedler
Scott, yesterday on the Bob list I asked about comparisons of the Noodle
and the RH Randonneur bar that comes in 31.8. The two responders liked both
bars and had used them for years. Steve

[RBW] Re: Stolen 58cm Rivendell Atlantis - Berkeley

2022-12-08 Thread Ryan
Dave, I am so sorry your bike was stolen and I hope you can get it back -
safely

I suspect you have a lot of history with it and that is irreplaceable of
course. But do you have house insurance to cover some of the financial
loss, so you can possibly replace it if it doesn't turn up?

[RBW] Re: New Roaduno Dropouts

2022-12-08 Thread Garth
The print does say for a chain tensioner or derailleur. That's quite
straight forward to me. Sun XCD does make a 120mm cassette hub. Customize
your own cog set and there 'ya go.

So why call it a Road-UNO ? Because it can be a seamless single speed
and just because it can be used as such doesn't mean it can't/shouldn't
have a hanger for a tensioner or derailleur. It adds to the versatility of
the frame, very good idea ! Don't let the words/definitions/descriptions
yank you're chain, so to speak.
