[RBW] Re: 1947 French touring bike — Bombadil/Hunqapillar inspiration?

2023-03-06 Thread Joe Bernard
I don't know anything about the French bike but I don't think Grant was
inspired by any particular one when he started fiddling with extra tubes.
There was an early Rivendell Reader (I guess they're all early now) with an
article all about triangulation and bridge trusses and stuff, I think it
started there.

Oh my gosh, Leah...these are a riot. What's even funnier is your plan to
add the evidence to the graduation slide show; he'll really love that!

Your dog wasn't being tortured; he was happy to be there in whatever way he
could smush his body into the backpack or basket. Happy to be with his
people and not left behind.

To all who have "tortured" their kids and significant others with rides
that were too long or bikes that weren't up to snuff, forgive yourselves!
They had bikes and you made time to ride together. Good for bonding, fresh
air and fun. My hat is off to you!

[RBW] Re: Front Derailleur Suggestions

2023-03-06 Thread Eric Marth
I'm not a mechanic or an expert. But I've set up two compact doubles in the
past year:

   - On my Hillborne: A SunXCD 42/24 with a Suntour Cyclone (Mark I)
   - On my MB-2: A TA Specialities 42/28 with a Suntour AR

In both instances I had to run the derailer a lot higher than I thought I
should to get the jump. It looked so wrong I almost abandoned the crank.
But then I looked closely at other compact doubles and found FDs run higher
than conventional wisdom dictates. The same was true when setting up an SR
mixte, had to run the FD pretty high to miss the chainstay but it shifts
fine.

Your mileage may vary.

Any suggestions for different FD? May need different chain rings
because of that big jump, but if I do that, I may be best off buying
 something else and selling these.

 Thanks,

[RBW] WTB: Silver Paul Short Pull Levers

2023-03-06 Thread matt miller
I'm pretty sure this search will be met with crickets, but figured I'd ask
here before I order. In case anyone wants to get rid of a pair of Paul
canti brake levers, I'm looking to buy. (For some reason long-pull brakes
were installed on my Homer. My wife has Pauls on her bike. I tried them, it
worked well, and now I don't want to go with different levers!)

Thanks,
Matt

Update - I put some park tool super grip on there for a little extra

alone on a seat post or is it combined with some grease on the lower part

[RBW] WTT: Nitto Noodle for your Spank Flare 25 Degree bars

2023-03-06 Thread maxcr
I'm looking to explore some flared dropbar action on one of my builds - as
the title says, I what to trade my Noodle for your Spank Flare 25 Degree
bar, ideally in 50 or 52cm width.

My Nitto Noodle is a 46, it's in great condition and I'll throw in a set of
basic Shimano brake levers (Tiagra) to make up for the price dif.

Thanks!

Max in Boston.

But substituting OS Regular did what I described. In any event, good luck with the sale and getting new wheels. I too much prefer tubeless off road. I said that you can patch tubes full of sealant, but it sure ain't a job you'd want to do trailside in a desert with sealant-dribbling tube and only sand on which to spread your stuff around. My Rangers are mounted on far too narrow OEM 24mm OW Alex rims on a 2012 Monocog 29er with rear stays considerably too narrow for anything much over 55 mm, yet with age the Rangers have spread from 69 mm to (in front) 73 mm; 72 mm in back -- this at 13-15 psi; if you pump to 20 the tires expand so much that the rear is locked against the stays. The rear tire is improperly seated on the very many layers of Stan's rim tape and the runout brings the knobs to within literally 1 mm of the left chainstay, 2 mm on right. I mean to have the rear rim retaped (I leave such non-spec conversions to professionals) and the tire seated properly. One day God willing I'll replace the Monocog with a frame and wheels that allow a true 76 mm + 1 cm side clearance at all 4 stays. On Fri, Feb 24, 2023 at 1:13 PM A. D. That tire is so glued to the rim it could not care less if the sealant dried up in 2020. Lots of fun. If anyone has a set of 650b wheels they’d be interested in trading, let me know. My wife and I honeymooned in Vermont on our Santana tandem. Yes, 27" wheels

middle school aged, we bought another tandem (Co-Motion Periscopa) for a
