[RBW] San Francisco Randonneurs 200k ride report

2024-02-11 Thread Toshi Takeuchi
The Russian River 200k comes in at a little over 200k with 126 miles. I
consider myself a lazy randonneur. I prefer to train as little as
possible, while also trying to minimize the suffering on the event day as
much as possible.

I'm not unfit because I commute to work on my bike (Cheviot). During the
school year, I drop my daughter off at school, park the car nearby and ride
my bike to work and back to the car after work. It's about 5 miles and
~600 ft of elevation gain. My base is therefore 40-50 miles a week (4-5
commute days) and two weekends I did a 15 mile loop from my house. It's
enough training to finish the 126-miler, but I wanted to ride without
suffering unduly.

I drew on my experience:

1. I know what my body likes to eat on long rides.
My go to recipe: rice bars-I think of it as an elevated spam musubi
https://www.skratchlabs.com/blogs/recipes/dr-lims-bacon-and-egg-rice-cakes

I put in chicken apple sausage instead of bacon and skip the maple
sugar/brown syrup. I wrap the rice/eggs/sausage in seaweed like a sushi
roll and plop it in a sandwich baggie. I didn't have to stop for anything
yesterday except some water and a quick bathroom break.

2. I know that with my base of fitness, I need to stay within a very narrow
range of effort. If I put in too much effort, then my body won't be able
to recover.

--This means that I need to go slow out of the gate and not get caught up
in the excitement of the start, and I have to take it easy on the hills and
spin in my low gears. If I follow this strategy, then I can maintain
energy until the end without struggling to the finish line.

(Conversely, a countless number of times, have I gone too hard at the start
and limped along to the end!)

It was a chilly start and forecast for 38 degrees, which on a steep
downhill is practically ski weather, so I put on my ski gloves on top of my
fingerless gloves to start the day off.

As expected, out of the gate it was fast. I kept it slow. I was riding
alone that day because my friend was just returning from Germany and was
jet lagged, so I went at my own pace.

Soon, I was the last one of the 60 or so riders and the only people I saw
were the late starters who were passing me.

It was cold as expected, and it was also foggy with condensation on my
glasses, so visibility was poor for a while, but gradually the sun came out
and it was a beautiful day. I met up with another Riv that day--a rider
with a beautiful A Homer Hilsen (I'm sorry I missed his name). He caught a
nice picture as the sun started to come out and we had a beautiful view of
the rolling hills.

I made my way through the grazing cows and worked through the Russian River
valley over to the coast where it was a really beautiful day. We headed
back down the coast and then back to the start at San Rafael.

--In terms of time allowed for the ride, the minimum pace is roughly 10
miles per hour, including stops, giving about 12.6 hours to finish.

I exceeded my target goal of 10-11 hours and came in under 10 hours. I only
had 18 minutes of time stopped (a record low for me), including a couple of
construction 1-lane delays, so that helped me maintain a good time.

For the 300k, I'm going to add in some 28 mile training loops. I figure if
I go hard on the 28-milers, then it will be enough to finish modestly well
on the 300k.

Until next time,
Toshi in Oakland

Re: [RBW] FS Items Brakes, Seatposts, Saddles, Derailleurs

2024-02-11 Thread Mike Godwin
Hi Folks
Thank you for the great response. The remaining items are:

Campy GS crank, 170 length, 144 BCD, w/ 45 t ring. I'll throw in a pant
guard made from a 50 t ring if ya want it. Threads in good condition. $40

Pacenti Forza Classico rims, silver, asymmetric/symmetric pair, 32 hole,
NIB $220

Brooks Swallow, black, steel rails, like new condition. $120

Cannondale faux carbon al seatpost. 27.2, uncut. $20

Promax ISO seatpost. 26.4, uncut. $20

Tiagra short cage RD, RD-4500, $15

Avid Shorty cantis 1 bike’s worth. Koolstop/Tektro pads. Missing one barrel
for QR end, no straddle cables. $20
Campagnolo Silca Pump metal head $25
If anyone is interested in a 1980 Bianchi Specialisima, 62 cm, Tange
Prestige replacement chrome fork, ask for photos. Paint crappy, suffered a
front end bump, some crinkled paint but otherwise looks good. Free, you pay
shipping. Would make a cool patinaed frame much like the Ramboulliet
someone worked over.

[RBW] WTB: Blue Paul Racers and a Large Silver or Gray Trunk Sack

2024-02-11 Thread Nathan Mattia
Hello Riv Riders!

Like so many specialized parts these days, I find myself in need of a
couple that are supposedly still made, but that I can’t find through the
normal channels.

1. My 2017-Era Orange Caliper-Sam is trimmed out in blue whenever I can.
Since I need a brake upgrade, I thought I would go big and go for the Blue
Paul Racers. The home-office is out of them right now. Anybody out there
got a pair for sale?

2. Still looking for a Large Gray or Silver Trunk Sack for my Miyata 1000.

LET ME KNOW!!
-Nathan Mattia

Re: [RBW] Re: trying to find an obscure former riv product

2024-02-11 Thread Patrick Moore
Well, "to err is human." My sole aim, goal, purpose, and motivation in life
is to have the bottoms of the hooks perfectly parallel to the ground. I
may* have failed and, for that, I am profoundly embarrassed.

*The bar angle may be distorted by my always semi-incompetent photography.
Or perhaps not, and perhaps just a wee bit of downward angle is what I
really like. Who knows what one really likes?

At any rate, that bar is supremely comfortable, and I've been thinking that
hooks on the very same bar on the geometrically cloned 2020 Matthews needs
to be rotated down a wee bit.

Patrick Moore, surprised and at once somewhat flattered and alarmed that
Bill notices these things, in ABQ, mud 'n' snow NM.

I approve of this photo...because the hooks are correctly parallel to the
top tube, rather than the misguided standard of having them parallel to the
ground. The hooks are to be parallel to the ground ONLY incidentally, when
the top tube is level. Aesthetic truth and correctness demands this.

Re: [RBW] FS Items Brakes, Seatposts, Saddles, Derailleurs

2024-02-11 Thread Patrick Moore
Mike: I'll take the Shimano 15 t fw if still available. To confirm: 3/32"
and not 1/8"?

Paypal to this address?

[Among the other things, some good prices for things I fortunately don't
need. I'd love a Superb Pro crankset, only I've got too many TA 50.4s and
an extra DA GS 200 or 300; still tempted but not now. Ditto for SP fd.
Excellent price for a pair of Paul cantis, too. The prices for the Campy
head and the excellent RG Compe calipers also very good -- IME, good
quality single pivots with decent levers, short cable lengths, and salmon
pads stop very well indeed.]

Re: [RBW] Re: [BOB] 1) Best source for SP PD 8 hubs. (2) WTB/WTT/WTG Fleecer Ridge tires

2024-02-11 Thread Patrick Moore
Thanks, but the point of the exercise is to match hubs between the 2
wheelsets exactly so that the calipers and rotors require little
adjustment. When I tried an adaptor on an earlier second wheelset I had to
mess around a great deal with shims, which was a pain.

[RBW] Re: Northern Hemisphere Winter 2023-2024 Ride Photos

2024-02-11 Thread Patrick Moore
I should have added that each cm of width (with corresponding drop in
pressure) adds very greatly to float over sand. 50s are the narrowest that
I care to ride in sand, at 18 to 20 all round pressure; 60s are noticeably
better at 17 or 18 all round; and the WTB Rangers at a non-full-expansion
72 mm at 13 psi were sit and push a 65" gear thru 3" sand that would have
50s skating and require deep downshifting, and require standing on the
60s.. I could grunt the Rangers thru 4" sand standing in a 65" single gear.

So, 60 vs 50 gives up a lot of float.

[RBW] Re: Best practice with Sunrace Thumbshifters

2024-02-11 Thread R. Alexis
Hello Andrew,

What shifters did she have on the bike before? When you said the shifters
died, what happened? Lever actually break? Was wondering if there was a way
to make the old shifters still work.

Shop I frequent replaced some old Shimano brifters that had thumb shifters.
The 4 anchors nubs broke on the shifter mounting. Looked at how to make it
work. I initially was able to drill out recesses where the mounting, anchor
nubs used to be and tried using the smallest ball bearing to hold it in
place. The shifter ended up sitting a little too tall on the mount. Ended
up cutting small pieces of a broken spoke to fit in the closed recess of
the mount and protrude into the drilled out recess. Once remounted this
helped to anchor the shifter body and work again.

Thanks,

Reginald Alexis

[RBW] NorCal Coast Tour Route Feedback

2024-02-11 Thread Stephen
Hey All,

This week I've been fantasizing about a tour route from Eureka to SF that
follows the PCH but avoids riding on it as much as possible (within
reason). So I've been playing around in rwgps and Gaia Gps maps to make
some route drafts, trying to stay close to the coast but choosing alternate
roads and dirt roads as much as possible to avoid traffic.

For the beginning of the route I used part of a Lost Coast tour route that
ends and begins in Eureka. As for the end, I've done a fair bit of riding
in Marin and have familiarity with the roads and trails up to Sir Francis
Drake Road. Will probably make two different route endings, one for east
bay and one for SF. (the route draft I have now is for eastbay)

I was wondering if anyone on the list had experience in the other areas up
the coast, or has done a similar ride, or been on any of the roads I've
routed or had recommendations? Sometimes you see a road on a map and in
reality its private access or washed away. Would appreciate any thoughts or
feedback or anybody who wants to nerd out on maps and routemaking.

Playing with the idea of riding this on my appaloosa in April.

ROUTES:
https://ridewithgps.com/routes/45561107
https://ridewithgps.com/routes/45561484

Let me know if theres trouble accessing those.

Thanks!

Agree on the Silver version 1 shifters. No experience with a Campy but
years of reliable shifting with a variety of derailers. If you like
friction shifting then the Silvers are golden.

[RBW] Re: New Platypus

2024-02-11 Thread Steve
Tim, please pardon my disagreement, but I think your description of the
Platy's ride quality is perfect - "sublime". Anything more would just be
so many words.

Though it's a 50cm frame set with 650b wheels, my 2022 Platypus is built up
similar to yours - Billie bars, B17 saddle, front rack, a 44-34-24 triple
crankset, and of course, plump tires (42mm RH slicks under 62mm Honjos).
The more I ride it the more I love it. So, needless to say, I'm
digging your Platypus!!!

Re: [RBW] Re: Intro post, pics of my RIvs, and a Homer fit question

2024-02-11 Thread Garth
Zipp's Service Course XPLR 70 come in silver and are short reach/shallow
drop. (70/115). I chose this bar as I'm using a long body Tektro brake
lever(341) and my frames have a longer than usual reach. So with this
riding with my hands on the top/middles is as entirely comfortable as the
hoods and the drops as I still have lots of reach to stretch out in all
positions. The middle is oval shaped and has a slight 4-5d flare back to
it. Subtle but noticeable. I just can't see going back to a rounded middle
type of bar. I also bought a Ritchey Skyline Comp(black only) which has a
similar ergo top and small drop/reach, but haven't used them yet. These
change in reach/drop slightly per width.

Zipp has some some other silver drop bars too. I'd like to try them all,
but you know how that goes ..

The Tektro 341 "compact" lever has the same full body as the 340, but the
lever itself is shaped different so it's easier to grab in the drops.
They're marketed for small-er hands, but I find they mate perfectly with
shallow drop bars, and I have XL hands. I'm not a fan of the bent/offset
levers though as I think it flares out too much. It seems a solution to a
non-existent problem, and creates a problem in doing so, doh !

As for the saddle position, sheesh. Well everything I ever thought about
positioning oneself over the BB has been shown to be folly, so about all I
can say is if you get the urge to move forward, just do it and see what
happens. :-)

I second Patrick's thoughts on the saddle position -- don't adjust for
reach using the saddle position! Rather, get the saddle where you want it
and then figure out how to get the bars in the right position.

But, re. the Specialized Hover bars, don't forget that they feature
15mm of rise, while Eitan is finding that his handlebars are already too
 high!

The Specialized Expert Alloy Shallow Bend bar features the same shape
and 75mm reach of the Hover, but without the rise... But it remains less
than ideal on a Riv because it's available only in black and with a 31.8mm
 clamp diameter.

For that reason, I always return to the Soma Highway One handlebar!
Available in silver, and in 26.0mm clamp diameters! (Same 75mm reach as
 the
 Specialized bars...)
