Adam,

I meant to add that prices on digital micrometers seem to have gone down
over time. I replaced my old "analog" PITA micrometer on Amazon for
twenty-five bucks. I would not go for the cheapest though. I opted for one
with an auto "OFF" setting so you won't burn the battery out when you set
it down and forget it.

Adam,

Just saying . If you like the paint job on your bike, be mindful when
applying muscle to the BB remover tool. You'll be using a heavy-ish
adjustable wrench. So, adjust it so it's snug. It's pretty easy to have
that tool come out and the wrench can chip the vulnerable BB shell paint
edge. Ask me how I know.

[RBW] FS: 59cm Clem H "Hillibike" with Jones, Thomson, Shimano XT, etc.

2024-02-17 Thread Jeremy Till
I've got some exciting adventures on the horizon that would be best suited
to having a slightly different bike in my stable, so I've decided to part
ways (amicably) with my first-gen (2016) 59cm Clem Smith Jr, in the
no-longer-available "H-type." This has been a great bike that I've really
enjoyed riding, but I don't do it enough and I'm excited to pass it on to
someone who will enjoy it.

Not to toot my own horn, but I was riding hillibikes before they were cool,
or at least before Grant had thought up the term. When I bought this in
2016, I was mountain biking a lot and built this up from the start as a rim

strong V-brakes, and trigger shifters. When VO brought out their 31.8mm

whole thing together, and that has been the basic setup with relatively
minor modifications since then.

but the rim tape is the original from when I built it up in 2016 so it
could probably use a refresh if you are going to try to run them tubeless.

[RBW] Re: Intro post, pics of my RIvs, and a Homer fit question

2024-02-17 Thread John Bokman
Ted, thanks for that handy tip concerning fit. My Sam fits just how you
describe: Elbow at saddle nose, fingertips just brushing the bars. I'd
never measured this way before, but knew immediately when I swapped a 7 cm
stem from the original 10cm stem that it was a vast improvement. I'd always
felt that my other bike (not a riv) was just a tad too long, also. By
employing your method, I have since shortened the stem (7cm from 9cm).
Noticeable improvement for me.

 Hi all,

A while back I posted about low q, low-range cranks for my
 Hillborne.

I just ordered one of the VO 46/30s, which seems like a good option
at the price. I'll use the stock rings first, then tweak them down the
 road.

 A few questions - I'm going to try the install myself--I think--and
 this is my first attempt.

I understand that the VO 46/30 is supposed to be paired with a
118mm BB. I have read on here of folks using shorter spindles. I
 currently
have either a 113 or 115mm on the Hillborne. I'm assuming the only way
 to
know is to remove the cranks and measure? Has anyone here tried a
 shorter
spindle on their Hillborne with the VO cranks?

My question - Should I try simply swapping cranks

I'd take the Nitto Pearl 100. Is it the kind that says "Pearl 10" on the
