[RBW] Re: Friction Shifting Issues with my Old Clem

Yes it is a 9. I've wanted to switch to Silver Thumbies so that might just
be the next upgrade. Good point about the derailleur too, that's something
to consider.

Re: [RBW] Re: Rapid rise derailleur suggestion

2024-03-18 Thread Junes
High normal refers to “regular” rear derailleurs, for which the default position with no spring tension is in the highest gear. Hence, high normal. Low normal (what Shimano called Rapid Rise) is the opposite: the default derailleur position without spring tension is in the lowest (largest) gear. This is why Grant/Riv are calling their low normal derailleur in development the “OM,” for opposite movement, sort of rejecting the notion that high normal is the absolute normal. The different movements are just opposite each other. On Mar 18, 2024, at 11:02 PM, John Rinker wrote:Just curious: What does 'high normal' mean in the derailleur world?Cheers, JohnOn Monday, March 18, 2024 at 3:44:45 PM UTC-7 ian m wrote:I believe the M952 is high normal, but you can't go wrong with the M951On Monday, March 18, 2024 at 1:01:39 PM UTC-4 chintan...@gmail.com wrote:I'm looking to try a RR derailleur and want something under 50-60 ideally.Which ones would you recommend? Hey Collin,

I had the same issue with my hanging Edelux (also while living in
Berkeley). The condensation would not go away no matter how long I kept it
out of the rain. Turns out there was a bad batch of lights. I sent my light
to Peter White and received a new one from the good folks at SON after a

Thanks. I'm pleased with the bar tape choice as well. The Paul Racers are
great, though I think their industrial look is somewhat at odds with the
rest of the bike; They are one of the few choices I made with the bike that
I sometimes second-guress: wonder if I should have saved some $$ and gone

I think olive would be a good color choice. WIsh there were some sort of
configurator, like with cars, where you could get a better sense of the

Re: [RBW] Edelux II Headlamp Moisture - Is my light cooked?

2024-03-18 Thread Collin A
Thanks Peter et al.,

I'll go with the wait and see approach then (I've got 2 more years on the
warrant just in case). The condensation has already reduced a bit courtesy
of the lovely weather we have been having here. But regardless, definitely
a bit bummed that a $200+ fancy light has water intrusion with (in my
opinion) a "normal" amount of rain riding.

Eric -

go for it, ride it, enjoy it.

I have a lovely 2003 Rivendell Custom.

In its first iteration, I put Mavic Ksyriums on it.

Admiittedly, it looks better without the Ksyriums -

but I was happy riding them for a while, the bike still road great. I got
some funny looks but kept going.

anyway, enjoy your bike.

[RBW] Re: Ride Reports - Where You Defied the Weather

2024-03-18 Thread Nick Payne
About 40 years ago, when I was a racing cyclist, I rode in an early season
spring race (three laps of a 50km circuit) that started in nice sunny
conditions with the temperature somewhere around 60-65F, so we all started
in shorts and short sleeves. Towards the end of the second lap, the wind
started to pick up and rather black clouds started rolling in, and shortly
after we started the final lap, it started to rain and the temperature
dropped quite noticeably. With about 30km left it started to hail and the
wind increased and the temperature dropped further. By the time we finished
(in dribs and drabs, my wife who was at the finish line told me that the
largest bunch she saw finishing was three or four riders), there was
several inches of hail on the ground, and my fingers were so cold that I
couldn't feel what I was touching. I was shaking uncontrollably, and had
real trouble undoing my toestraps so that I could get my feet out of the
pedals. I saw some cyclists who couldn't manage to get their toestraps
loosened at all - when they came to a halt, they just toppled over
sideways. It's by far the coldest I can remember getting on a bike in over
half a century of cycling.

Re: [RBW] Rapid rise derailleur suggestion

2024-03-18 Thread EGNolan
I have acquired a few and enjoy them when paired with the correct
thumbshifter. To me, they're not inherently better than High Normal
derailleurs, BUT because I always use my thumbshifters to shift the rear
derailleur and keep them on the inside of my bars, the Low Normal/Rapid
Rise keep me moving in the same direction regardless of whether it's a
Right thumbshifter or a Left thumbshifter. I've used (and still have) a
Deore, LX, XT & XTR. While the weight and appearance differ, I haven't seen
a huge improvement in shifting from one to the other... I've got more RR
derailleurs than bikes at this point (and love my High Normal XTR) so if
you'd be into a well loved LX or really good shape Deore, I'd be happy to
sell one for $50 shipped.

Honestly I gave up on them because the costs are way over what a very nice
non-RR sells for. Its an interesting feature and I understand why people
like it but at the end of the day I personally don't think the difference
is life changing enough to pay the premium. Shimano really doesn't make any
junk at any price point though so I think any of them will work. Some are

I'm looking to try a RR derailleur and want something under 50-60 ideally.

Which ones would you recommend? Were there are early RR derailleurs that
one should stay from or budget ones that are a good value? Were there
differences in pulley sizes - so would be better to get one where
replacements are available?

I'm currently seeing an LX m580, xt M760, an xtr m951 and xtr m952 around
that range on ebay in different used conditions...and then the prices rise
very quickly!

Thanks a lot for guiding :)

Your build came out very close to the build I'm working on--I think we have
the same levers, brakes, saddle, and wheels. Great choice on the bar tape.
I'm debating between that and the Blue Lug acrylic cloth tape in olive,
which I already have in possession.

Well done!

The 26mm diameter and silver finish requirements limited handlebar

Highway One bars, paired with 10mm shorter quill. The bike fits SO MUCH
better now. Rode for almost 4 hours yesterday with nary a shoulder, neck,

 ** Why Amelia?
 1) The "A" has to stand for something.
 2) I've always been fond of the name, but S.O. nixed it from the baby
name list--a diagreement mooted when she gave birth to a son.
 3) I always felt that bicycles, like ships, should be named after
 women, cats, or felonies.

Wish the pic could capture Amelia's subtle but elegant butternut
 sparkle:

New bars a much better fit for my body. However, I hadn't realized how
much longer the drop part of the bar would be than on the now-replaced
Noodle, or maybe it's the shorter stem, or maybe both, but my knees will
sometimes graze shifters when popping up out of a seated position.

Re: [RBW] Philadelphia Bike Expo March 16 - 17

2024-03-18 Thread Tom Goodmann
Echoing Eric: so good to see Roman, James, and Will--and three beautiful
bikes (all of which sold, I believe)--as well as meeting Roberta, Leah,
Pam, Tom, Patty, Paul, Rick (riding a Rom with 38s!) and others at PBE.
Multiple Atlantises and Platys amid the throngs. A very nice event in every
respect; lots of group rides, including Saturday night to Keystone Bicycle
Company for beer and pretzels, our group led by Pam. And seeing the work of
advocates, of component makers, and the bikes of fine builders. Very good
crowds, too, on both days. I'm glad I went. Thanks, Rivfolk!
