[RBW] Re: Anecdatum: Single datapoint "pro" for dynamo lighting.

2024-03-27 Thread Joe Bernard
This is the point Leah (Bicycle Belle Ding Ding) mentions: She rides a lot
and always has her lights. I ride not as much but run my rechargeables day
and night and tell myself they're fine. Have I forgotten to charge them the
night before? Yes. Have I charged them but still had one crap out on me
before the ride was over? Also yes!

I haven't been convinced to invest in a dynohub yet (current bikes, I've
had them before) but she's right about them.

[RBW] Anecdatum: Single datapoint "pro" for dynamo lighting.

2024-03-27 Thread Patrick Moore
I think there has been a recent thread or 2, or perhaps just thread
tangents, about dynamo lighting versus battery lighting. Here's my $0.05.

I rushed off to Presanctified liturgy (Orthodox Lent is a month behind
Catholic Lent for reasons I don't understand) this evening at 5 pm after a
pretty full work day, riding the 2020 Matthews IGH road bike. I am usually
pretty good at getting all my riding kit together the night before, or at
least the morning before, but as I passed the outbound 3 mile or so mark I
realized that I'd forgotten all my reflective gear. I usually wear a bright
reflective Sam Browne or big Rivendell triangle as well as bright and wide
ankle reflectors on both legs.

But I was safe; the IGH Matthews has a SON 20R powering a 1st-gen Edeluxe
as well as a Secula seatstay-mount tail light and that big B rack-mount
one with a ring of LEDs around a central reflector. I had remembered to
attach my B Ixion IQ Premium AA battery light to augment the feeble
Edeluxe standlight.

*52cm Nitto Noodle (Mod. 177) - 26.0 — $90*

residue from the standard newbaum/shellac combo here at Riv.

*Panaracer GravelKing Slick, BROWNwall, folding 700x38 — $80*

   - Used for one 25 mile ride.

*Velocity A23 rims, Silver, 700/NMSW — $120*

   - Purchased in 2012 and sat around ever since, was told it was built and
then unbuilt. Looks basically new to my eyes but will ask Rich to
   double-check if there's any interest.

*Thomson Elite Setback, Black/27.2/330mm — $45*

   - Looked like a well-used post before I got it. Used for 250-ish miles

[RBW] FS: NOS Heron Road frame & fork, 60cm, $800

2024-03-27 Thread Tom Goodmann
As part of downsizing ahead of an impending move, I am selling a
never-built 60 cm Heron Road frame and fork only (no headset; no bottom
bracket). As all of you will know, the bike was designed by Grant Petersen
at Rivendell, and built by Waterford as a collaboration with Rona
Components, then owned by Ted Durant. The beautiful blue-green road frame
bears serial number B00055, and was built in February 2000 with Reynolds
531 tubing. (For further information, all of the original Heron web pages
may be found on the Internet).
The frame bears only the slightest mark on the inside of one rear
dropout, probably a sign of having been fitted with a wheel at some point;
it is otherwise pristine with all decals and the Heron head badge in
perfect condition. $800, plus shipping and insurance (I'll use a frame box
instead of a full-size bike box). Questions welcome! Tom

[RBW] Re: WTB 26" Front Wheel with Generator Hub

2024-03-27 Thread Ian A
Just be aware that is a fairly low end dynamo in the Shimano range.
Slightly heavy and draggy in comparison to the higher end Shimano and SP
products.

Some shopping around on the German sites might get you an SP hub or an
LX/XT hub built into a wheel. Shimano does have a restriction on allowing
the export of their products from Europe to North America. A complete wheel
might be excepted from the restriction.

I have bought a fair bit of stuff over the years (Tubus racks, B lights,
Brooks Saddles, Ortlieb panniers and handlebar bag, tires, spokes and
nipples etc) and quite a few of those items are now restricted for export.
Xxcycle in France doesn't seem to observe those restrictions (yet). Maybe
they do now, my last order was while back.

My main reason for ordering from Germany is because the economy shipping
option comes through the regular postal system and gets delivered by Canada
Post on this end. Canadian consumers will have horror stories of shipments
delivered via UPS and FedEx due to the brokerage fees for customs entry.
Also, shipping tends to be faster to Canada from Europe than from the USA.

2024-03-27 Thread walter peseckas
I am 6’ tall with a 30” in seam. The saddle setting in the pic was for my
son who is 5’9”. My normal saddle setting is about 2” higher than what I
have in the picture. BTW the brakes are Paul center pull brakes. Sorry for
the typo.

[RBW] Re: How do I know when a saddle fits?

2024-03-27 Thread Linda G
You write that you have tried many saddles but were any of them woman
specific? Through a lifetime of touring and casual cycling I never had a
saddle that I would describe as comfortable until I found the Terry
Liberator X. By comfortable I mean that I just don't notice it when riding.
Long ago I ran for exercise, before there were running shoes for women. I
would get blisters on my heels and sides of my feet because the heels and
whole shoe was too wide and not shaped for my feet.
My dilemma now is finding a saddle for more upright riding that is
comfortable and also looks good on the Platypus I am building up. What I
think would be ideal is the Brooks B68s but it is not being made. Rivendell
sells the regular B68 if you buy a frame but I have learned that I need a
short saddle. I have bought a B67s and will see how it works out, though I
don't like the extra weight of the springs.

I’m considering taking a train to a ride this summer, but that means no Racing Platypus, only the purple one can fit. Can 48 mm tires do a 15-17 mph road ride pace? I have 42 on all my other bikes. Would 48s be slow? The ride is a 2 day event, 100 miles total. I’d like to keep the tires if I could, because they’re new and they are fat enough to also double as gravel tires, should I decide to do a gravel ride again. But I do more road rides than anything else, and if those 48s will cripple me, I’ll go back to 42s. What’s the consensus?Basket straps. I have the Nitto Basket Rack and even though I’ve disliked it in the past, I figure it’s pretty and I already own it and I might need a front rack for travel. But do I really have to put the ugly strap from bar to basket? Is the Nitto Basket Rack safer than the Mark’s Rack? I know Sergio was thrown when his Mark’s Rack loosened and hit the front tire and he’s missing significant chunks of front teeth! What is everyone doing about their front racks?Lights. I have an Edelux light. It’s not the right color for this build, but it’s perfectly good. But sometimes I think, “wouldn’t it be nice to have a light that would charge your phone?” The Sinewave Beacon 2 will do just that, but it sounds like it’s not a great road light. What are people using to charge phones on long rides away from home?I ordered my wheels today. This, because J at the Velocity booth in Philly talked me into them when he heard about the theme of my build. Here’s a sneak peek. And thanks for helping me out here! [RBW] WTB 26" Front Wheel with Generator Hub

2024-03-27 Thread JohnS
Hello All,

Looking to make my '82 Stumpy a year round errand runner, so dyno lights
are the way to go.

Requirements:
26" rim brake for a wider tire. I plan to use RH 26" x 2.3" Rat Trap pass
tires.
100 mm spacing.
6V, 3W power output for front and rear LED lights.
Good working order and can be serviced (no rusty axle nuts).

Nice to have, but not required:
Silver color, but black is ok.
32 spoke count (I have an extra rim, so if yours is worn out, I can switch
it).
Looking to spend about $100 plus shipping to Allentown PA 18104.
Hub brand is not too important to me, the exception would be the Sanyo hub,
I've read that it has noticeable drag.

Please reply directly to me if you have one to unload.
Thank you,
JohnS

My dimensions have been the bane of my cycling existence, Bill!

Bill's question and suggestion to clarify was pretty insightful then.
I suffer from the same handicap as you: short legs/ long torso. (6'2" w/
 87 pbh in my case.)

Knowing what I now know after many years of figuring it out, I'd
suggest making sure you get the biggest frame you can possibly stand over.

Especially with the older models that tended to have proportionately
shorter top tubes. They might still only be marginally long enough, but
the good news is that there was likely a size increment that worked pretty
well. The later, expanded-sizing models don't come in as many increments,
but the good nees here is that if you DO happen to find one that maxes-out
your standover height it is likely to be the most no-compromise, best-fit
bike you've ever owned. Just don't settle until you find it.

Also, FWIW, the very first run of sam hillbournes (canti versions in
metalic orange or sagey green wihout creme headtubes and with gold decals,
I recall), which were among if not THE first to use the expanded sizing,
had longer top tubes than later versions. Im always on the lookout for
 one
of those, even though i don't "need" one.

I'm in Atlanta GA, but I travel all over the East coast for work. Also
have shipped plenty with bikeflights and happy to talk to folks from
 wherever about what's available!

Yeah you're a fair bit taller than me and I used to ride a 58cm 700c
original-run Atlantis. That may be a tricky fit challenge. I like your
inclusion of the Platy on your list. No standover worries with a nice big
step through! Last suggestion, if you mention your general location, you
may be able to arrange test-ride try-outs on a good candidate chassis from
a friendly RBWGroup reader. Good luck with the search

 Thanks for the thoughts Bill!

My saddle height is 74cm and the Atlantis I just got rid of is a 53cm.
I'm 6' with a 840 pbh, so pretty long torso and shorter legs.

Budget is fairly open depending on what the Frame is/how rare it might
 be.

what size are you looking for?

 Hey Y'all,

Recently sold my Atlantis frame that was a bit too small for me to move
up to something that fits better. Wondering if anyone here has an
Appaloosa, Atlantis, Plat, Sam that they're looking to move on. Also into
older models if the sizing works/they're in good shape(Hunq, Saluki,
 Bombadil, etc.)

Figure this might be a long shot, but better to make it known here
before starting to dig too deep into the corners of the internet.

While not an "on the ride" charging option, portable solar panel rigs are
becoming close to interesting for situations where sunlight can be tapped
for charging devices or bricks. An NYT take on panels and banks: NYT
Wirecutter review

I hope development soon reaches a point where a bag top solar panel might
have utilitarian output more than a dynamo hub for maintaining a smartphone
and a brick/power bank, not just an array that can be opened up when
stopped. Powering a bank is the key, it buffers devices from fluctuating
outputs. That function in a bicycle light was just too much as Peter
described.

Even if not used while riding, an easily deployed solar panel charging
system that you could pop out when stopping could scavenge powering
opportunitiees as you go. Lunchtime, time at destination before sunset. As
the military relies increasingly on devices carried by individuals a
performance balance between carrying charged batteries/bricks and
recharging options is evolving and offering greater independence.

My wife's neice and engineer husband finished out their Transit van for
living at the onset of the pandemic. He was knew to let someone with
knowledge and skills install a solar roof panel and power bank specified to
their living and working from the van. While the he grasped the concept of
a charging, storing and use draw of electricity, he did not appreciate the
same for the water system and used the tiny transfer pump's output directly
to faucet or shower instead of employing an accumulator/point of use
reservoir. It was the intolerable issue that ended their van life period in
the western National Parks.
