2024-04-09 Thread Stephen Cavell
Hey Paul,

Oops, not sure if that last email made it to you because i got an alert the
message was too big (I included phone photos) so I'm resending the info
sans photos:

The long struts are about 10 1/4” measuring from the center of the eyehole.

Looks like I did cut the shorter struts down by ~1.5” or so, with the bend
theyre about 6.5”.

if those are too short for you and thats a dealbreaker let me know, I could
bring the price down and keep the short struts or something.

I guess that depends on what you mean by "taller" and what you mean by "usual".
I have six vintage level top tube road bikes in my stable, and I would not
consider the Univega "taller" than the other five.  I'm a Stack and Reach guy,
and in order to get the Stack and Reach I want/need on a vintage road frame
with a level top tube, I'm looking at a solid "Large" frame size.  Even though
I'm 5'10".  Back in my teens and twenties I fit these bikes more like racing
bikes and I would have been in the "Medium" range.  I also have two
contemporary level-top-tube bikes and those have a similar silhouette to the
vintage machines.  Those 8 bikes have a "fist of seatpost" as is typical.
My modern sloping top tube bikes have a similar Stack and Reach but have a more
modern compact look.  Those range from slightly sloping bikes like a
Roadeo/Legolas/Quickbeam/Romulus to more sloping approaches.  All my bikes in
my stable fit me fine.  :)

Re: [RBW] The excellent old GP Sheldon/bikesite/mudsluts interview

2024-04-09 Thread Patrick Moore
Thanks for posting this link; old times. I do miss the Reader; I expect
Rivendell could turn that into a modest new revenue stream, but Grant did
talk about the wear and tear writing it imposed on his psyche. But it was
always fun and quirky and sometimes silly, but genially -- and *interestingly!
--* so and to me one of the best-ever bike reads. The Blahg is a good
second best and there otta be a law that Grant write a new one every 2
weeks.

Also, Grant was the one person who brought Brooks saddles (or leather
suspension saddles generally) and transverse saddlebags back to the US
market.

Patrick Moore, who sourced a NOS Campy Valentino FD from Rivendell for his
first custom 26" wheel Riv road bike in 1995 -- and who still has 3/4 of
that lump of beeswax that he bought from Rivendell not much later; fun
fact: beeswax kept for 30 years hardens into a solid bulk that no fire will
melt. Or so it seems.

[And who just now got back from a very pleasant early Spring, sunny, breezy
ride on his 1999 Joe Starck Riv Road Custom gofast 76" fixed gear -- the
truly best bicycle I've owned out of scores and the ultimate keeper.]

*bikesite: And finallyIf Eddy Mercyx and Miguel Indurain were able to
race each other in their prime, if they were to ride technologically
identical bikes, if they each had the exact same amount of rest, each had
abstained from sex for a full week before the race and each had their
friends, family and countrymen there to cheer them on, who would get the
most flats?Grant Petersen: Indurain, but they'd be pinch flats.*

Pending items have sold and folks should have the tracking info. The
updated list is below:

   - Vittoria Corsa 700x34 N.Ext, tube-type only. These have about
200-or-so miles. Lighter (230g measured), faster, and more durable (so far)
than the RH 700x32 extralight equivalents, IMO. Measure out to about 33 mm
on 19mm ID rims at 45 psi. *$80*
   - Wolftooth 110 bcd 42t narrow-wide. About 100 commute miles on these.
   *$40*
   - White Industries 68x113 BB Spindle. *ONLY the spindle*, good deal if
you have another length WI BB and want to try a 113 instead. *$30*
   - Ultegra 10 speed 114 link chain, new except for some block miles.
Waxed with silca chain wax if that's your thing. *$40* (I can include 2,
10 speed quick links for another $5 to help with resuse during hot-pot
   waxing).
   - Ultegra 10 speed 114 link chain, about 100 commute miles on this guy.
Used T-9 chain lube on this one. *$25*
   - Silca Tubeless Setup, 16 oz Part 1 and 32 oz Part 2 (replenisher).
   New, never used. *$50*

Cheers,

Actuall, regarding the tires -- I meant to point out that unlike 'modern'

but has worked for me in the past.

I found a bike far, far away that I had to have, and a quick post promising
fiddy bucks for taking the bike to a bike store for further processing
brought competent and friendly help.

https://www.bikeforums.net/classic-vintage/677166-facilitators-thread-post-here-if-you-re-willing-able.html

The outlay was $50 for the trip to the store, $100 to the bike store for
packing and dealing with the shipper, and a little over $100 for shipping
to my house. In early 2022, from Spokane, WA to East Lansing, MI.

Where there's a will...

cheers -mathias

Riv Folk,

Anyone could potentially assist with lobbing this to Michigan?..

[RBW] Re: Eroica California

2024-04-09 Thread Bill Lindsay
Paul asked: "Question: Is this bike taller then you usual?" in reference
to my Univega.

I guess that depends on what you mean by "taller" and what you mean by
"usual". I have six vintage level top tube road bikes in my stable, and I
would not consider the Univega "taller" than the other five. I'm a Stack
and Reach guy, and in order to get the Stack and Reach I want/need on a
vintage road frame with a level top tube, I'm looking at a solid "Large"
frame size. Even though I'm 5'10". Back in my teens and twenties I fit
these bikes more like racing bikes and I would have been in the "Medium"
range. I also have two contemporary level-top-tube bikes and those have a
similar silhouette to the vintage machines. Those 8 bikes have a "fist of
seatpost" as is typical.

My modern sloping top tube bikes have a similar Stack and Reach but have a
more modern compact look. Those range from slightly sloping bikes like a
Roadeo/Legolas/Quickbeam/Romulus to more sloping approaches. All my bikes
in my stable fit me fine. :)

[RBW] The excellent old GP Sheldon/bikesite/mudsluts interview

2024-04-09 Thread luckyturnip
I’m sure this has been revived and discussed many times in the past thirty odd
years, but I’m reading the Mudsluts (Sheldon Brown/bikesite?) interview with
Grant Petersen and well if you haven’t read it you should. It’s mostly Grant
trying not to make the whole interview about the internet and its future as a
tool for bicycle businesses and customers.
I got here unironically via Google search so I can’t tell you when it’s from
but early in the Rivendell days, maybe 1994 or 1995.
Someone more saavy can tell. Hopefully this link will work:

Re: [RBW] FS: Swift Cascade rolltop Pannier set, maybe a Fab's Chest large

2024-04-09 Thread Richard Rose
I lucked into a set of these exact panniers a couple of years ago. They are really great & after doing a little research it seems they are highly collectible. Great price imho.Sent from my iPhoneOn Apr 8, 2024, at 9:52 AM, Austin Plocher wrote:Swift Pannier Set - $1752x Panniers: vinyl interior lining, external zip pocket, carrying handle, reflective strips, hook and bungee cord mounting system, D-rings... Don't have exact specs on interior volume but can carry plenty. I did one bikepacking trip with these but otherwise in good shape, everything in working order. Made back when Swift was MUSA, I believe.Gauging interest in Classic Large Fabio's Chest Burgundy, can take pics if anyone's interested. Would sell for something like $175 also? Missing one magnetic snap, doesn't really affect functionality. Came like that from Ron's, they offered to fix but timing never lined up to send back.Pics of Swift panniers attached
