The Yokozuna V brakes are currently 65% off at Soma, thru Sunday. I bought
a pair at the last sale, they're nice enough. Seemed similar to Shimano
Deore.

We talking pavement or dirt?

I think pavement the steepest/longest is out in vacaville - Mix Canyon Road
is about 2500 ft in 5 miles for an average of about 10%.

As for dirt, they are all steep as $hit. The longest/steepest is probably
somewhere out in Marin, but "Dirt Diablo" via Burma Road is pretty steep.

Apparently the actual steepest road mile in California is nearby: Mix

wondered whether it just seemed extra steep to me because I live in the

2024-04-12 Thread Toshi Takeuchi
The top of Diablo is probably the steepest (15%?), but quite short (a
couple hundred feet). The second half of Mt. Diablo is steeper than the
first half and is about ~6-8% and ~4.5 miles from the junction/ranger
station. The backside of Mt Hamilton is about 5 miles at a sustained 10%.
(Front side climbs from Fremont ~19 mi of climbing, backside goes toward
Livermore/Mines Rd.) The backside of Mt. Hamilton is definitely the hardest
for me.

2024-04-12 Thread Patrick Moore
That might be worth watching; thanks for the link. (Yes, I too find most
movies too slow and only watch them with my daughter, a film major;
otherwise I fast-forward a lot.)*

I can't help but thinking that if there were riding Rivendells they might
have been more comfortable.

Lastly, when I read the header, "Hard Miles," I saw "Hard Men."
https://www.velominati.com/racing/flahute-the-hardest-of-the-hardmen/
You're welcome.

*Actually, discovered some old BBC or Brit TV movies that I actually like;
one is the 2-part condensation of E Waugh's already condensed Sword of
Honor, starring (of all people) Daniel Craig. I dislike Craig, but he does
a wonderful job in this early 2000s movie. Four thumbs up.

Oh: Another wonderful one: Run, Boy, Run -- a 9 year old Jewish boy from
the shtetl runs away into the woods as Nazis round up his family and shoot
his father; the movie describes his survival. Based on true story.

The 5 Boro Bike Tour in NYC has been on my bucket list for years, and I
decided this year is the year. First Sunday of May (5/5 this year).
 https://www.bike.nyc/events/td-five-boro-bike-tour/
Registration opened this week, and I signed up.
I've got my lodging and flight booked as well.

This will be my first trip to NYC since I was a kid, 50 years ago. I
won't be bringing my Riv (Bringing the Ritchey Breakaway), but I'll be
there for a week, staying in midtown not far from ride start.
I'd love to meet up with others while I'm there, get recommendations on
where to ride, cheap food, coffee, bike shops, etc.

Anyone else here doing the ride?

 Mike M

Re: [RBW] Re: Question about rear brake cable housing routing with low friction on a Clem

2024-04-12 Thread R. Alexis
Allan,

Excellent use of that 135 degree noodle. I have used a couple of these to
route derailleur cable from the SunTour Command shifters in place of more
cumbersome full cable run on my Wilderness Trail Bike Dirt Drop bar OX
Brand Ti 29er cruiser. Also used a 90 degree one on the front cable hanger
on my Gary Fisher Gemini tandem with Surly Open bar. Made for smoother
cable routing.

I would say a bike shop probably has them sitting in a parts drawer, but
some shops may just toss them. Depends on the shop.

Nice seeing standard canti's in use on these bikes.

Thanks,

Reginald Alexis
