[RBW] Very belated SFR 300k ride report

2024-04-14 Thread Toshi Takeuchi
About a month ago, I rode the SFR 300k event. Prior to the 300k, I rode
the SFR 200k event and completed it successfully. I hoped to add to my
training, but I was only able to take one ride in the weekend ~28 hilly
miles to supplement my 4-5 days of commuting during the week.

Despite the lack of long miles, I was confident that if I stuck to my plan
of taking it easy on the hills and limiting my stopping time, then I could
have a good outcome.

The 300k route is very similar to the Russian River 200k route, except the
extra 100k comes from riding from the out and back from San Francisco
towards Fairfax-Olema. There were a few extra km in the mostly flats
around Santa Rosa too.

I had around a 10 hour 200k, so I was targeting a 10 + 6 hour =16 hour 300k.

I made my chicken sausage/egg/rice "sushi" rolls and then didn't stop at
all for food. I took a couple quick bathroom breaks and a water break, but
the only substantial time off the bike was my two flats.

Unfortunately my rear tire picked up some steel belted tire wires that went
through my Grand Bois Hetre tire and gave it a slow flat. These annoying
metal wires can only be removed by pliers, so it is a good idea to carry
one in your toolkit. I have a mini leatherman tool that I have in my bike
bag.

--One thing I did notice was that my tire had some sidewall damage despite
being stored inside and the tire being relatively new. I booted the tire
with a sticky park tire boot and continued on to the end without mishap.
I'm not sure when the tire damage happened and need to make sure to check
my tires before a long ride more carefully.

Despite the 2 flats, I finished in about 16 hours, so overall it was a good
ride in that I reached my desired goal.

I couldn't do the SFR 400k, which was yesterday, ending today, due to an
orchestra concert today. It was a bit wet out there, so I hope everyone
who did it managed ok. Actually, a couple years ago I rode the 400k and
played in a concert the following day. I wasn't so confident this time!

Several years ago I rode a wet 400k and finished around 23 hours (brutal!)
and did the very stupid thing of trying to drive home without taking a
nap. I caught myself falling asleep on the drive home and could have
killed myself. I promise to rest before going home!

I'm sure to have at least one big ride (double century or 400k) to ride
this year, but I have to juggle that with my crazy schedule. Luckily my
daily commute is providing a good base of training for these rides.

Actually, your fancy 10-speed Chorus rear derailleur does. It's just not in
the same location as the Shimano/SRAM ones. The Campagnolo chain tension
adjustment screw is actually on the cage itself:

(image taken from http://www.raltech.co.uk/Prod_96-Inst-RMC-Campag.html)

Here's a video
explaining
how to do the adjustment, but other than the location of the screw, the
concept is the same other than any other modern derailleur.

If you want to try to make the Chorus work, you could reverse the b screw to
add a little more reach, or you could try a Wolf Tooth Roadlink hanger

Re: [RBW] Snapped Clem seat binder bolt

2024-04-14 Thread Joe Bernard

accurate, they show a 57 effective top tube and 650b wheels. That is a nice

Good evening John. I'm sorry to hear about your reasons for selling and
hope all is well, but I am very interested in this lovely Hillborne. I just
wanted to double-check the size on it before I commit. The listing says
53cm but I can't seem to find Rivendell's dimensions on a 53cm: on their
site they have 51cm or 54cm. Could you please confirm if it is 54cm or
indeed 53cm? I have a PBH of 83.8, which puts me in a 54cm, but I'm sure a
53 would be fine too.

All the best,

The 5 Boro Bike Tour in NYC has been on my bucket list for years, and I
decided this year is the year. First Sunday of May (5/5 this year).
 https://www.bike.nyc/events/td-five-boro-bike-tour/
Registration opened this week, and I signed up.
I've got my lodging and flight booked as well.

This will be my first trip to NYC since I was a kid, 50 years ago. I
won't be bringing my Riv (Bringing the Ritchey Breakaway), but I'll be
there for a week, staying in midtown not far from ride start.
I'd love to meet up with others while I'm there, get recommendations on
where to ride, cheap food, coffee, bike shops, etc.

Anyone else here doing the ride?

Looking for an Atlantis in 53cm or Homer in 54.5cm, frame or complete. I'm
in the Boston metro or I'll cover shipping.

Thank you for your time and consideration. :)

[RBW] Re: 5 Boro Bike Tour (was NYC Riv Ride?)

2024-04-14 Thread Roy Summer
Did it once. That was enough. Verrazano was tough at end. Lots of crazies.
Right of passage for any rider. Remember, it’s a ride not a race. Bring
extra tubes. Be prepared for rain and chilly weather (My daughter and I
rode in the wet. Not fun). Ride defensively. Enjoy the sights. As a New
Yorker, I can say it’s the fastest I’ve ever gone on the BQE (Brooklyn
Queens Expressway). Have fun.

[RBW] Re: Soliciting opinions: help me pick the right Rivendell

2024-04-14 Thread Greg Sonstein
There is a lot of overlap in the Riv lineup. Most bikes can handle any
road, paved or gravel, even the Roadini (though I would not buy it for off
roading, it will take a 42mm tire which is plenty big for going on dirt).
The Homers, Sams are more roadie than the Appaloosa, Atlantis and Platypus
but can also easily go off road and take racks, fenders, and carry a decent
load. The only difference between the Sams and Homers is really the brakes
(v brakes/canti v. caliper/centerpull). Sams take a slightly larger tire,
maybe 50mm over 48mm for the Homer. If you really want one bike to rule
them all, I would get the Appaloosa or Atlantis, they are the same bike,
take big tires (55mm), take heavy loads. Most people will not even notice
the difference in the weight or stiffness. Also the longer chainstays make
the ride more plush. Platy is just as useful and comfortable but the design
is not for everyone. Clem is basically a cheaper Susie. Also the colors
change every year so this years Apps will not be tbhe same as last year.

   - February - Clems
   - March - Lugged Susies - kind of a new model
   - April - Roaduno bikes and frames - new model
   - May - Sam Hillbornes
   - June - Appaloosas
   - July - Platypus bikes and frames
   - August - Charlie Gallop, nu model, bikes and frames, more info later
   - September - Roadini

[RBW] Re: Soliciting opinions: help me pick the right Rivendell

2024-04-14 Thread Roy Summer

First, I would love to buy your Ciocc if it was a 52-54 and I didn’t
already have 5 bikes I ride and 1 to sell (1994/5 Bontrager rebuilt for
road). Second, although I don’t own a Riv, I do own a mostly original X0-1
(the precursor to all Rivs). It seems to be the best all around choice as
it works for fast road riding as well as longer, hillier rides. I think the
moustache bars combined with lighter road tires (I use Michelins that are
no longer available, but read on for a suggestion) work really well (other
bikes are drop bars and I often think X0-1 is best). So, my suggestion
would be an Appaloosa or Atlantis with Albastache bars, gearing of your
choice, and, if possible 26” wheels with Panaracer Pasela Protite 26x1.25
folding tires (light; flat resistant; fast on the road; wide enough for
light off road/gravel; daughter rides them in NYC). And, yes, I understand
the color issue and the dual top tube thing. Finally, strip the RB-1. It’s
not safe. And if you want my Bontrager we can talk (but it won’t fit you
and your Ciocc won’t fit me, so what’s the use).
