Re: [RBW] OT: Advice on trailer hitch mounted bicycle racks

We did this to our Honda Fit. The Class 1 hitch has a maximum
recommended vertical load of 200lb, so the salesman at the shop
recommended that we use the lightest possible rack. We would have
preferred a tray rack, but we settled for the Thule Helium rack for
two bikes.

Also, the Romulus with caliper brakes was only available for one year in

I had this issue on my Romulus a while back -- I couldn't seem to tighten
the Silver shifter enough. It turns out that the square-hole washer was not
seated well against the frame, and that was preventing proper adjustment of
the shifter. I filed down the washer a little and it was fine after that.

I thought about this too, but it could be that the only horizontal
dropouts available for the prototype happened to have a derailleur
hanger. I noticed that there are downtube shifter bosses also. So, um,
I have no clue.

Re: [RBW] S24O Packing & securing load

2011-09-26 Thread Horace
I tried out an adjustable bungee cord for securing my tent on top of
my rear rack for my latest trip (this past weekend). I thought it did
a better job than other solutions I'd tried, which mainly involved a
cargo net and many smaller bungee cords.

Here's the one I used:

Re: [RBW] Best/Favorite/Most Radical Cantilever Brakes

2011-09-17 Thread Horace
After trying a few different cantilevers on my Quickbeam, I finally
settled on using V-brakes. I did have to switch levers to do this. I
know that many people on this list disdain V-brakes, but I find that
they are excellent for braking, especially in wet weather, and I don't
have any problems modulating the stopping power. I also find them
easier to set up and adjust than cantilevers.

Re: [RBW] slipping Silver shifter

2011-09-08 Thread Horace
I had this problem with the silver shifter on the downtube, no matter
how much I tightened it.

I finally traced the problem to the fact that the square-hole washer
that sits on the frame was slightly too thick for my shifter boss. I
sanded it down a little bit with a Dremel tool, and that solved the
problem.

Re: [RBW] Downtube shifter diehards vs. downtube shifter experimenters

I noticed this about large frames too. I ride a 59cm with the bars a couple
inches below saddle height; the reach to DT shifters is about the same as
it is for bar ends. So I prefer them on the downtube (7-speed friction and
9-speed indexed).

650C and 650B are certainly close enough in diameter that you could use the
same tube; but most 650C tires are narrow racing tires, so that's probably
all the bike shop had. You probably want something like this:

But someone else also mentioned that you can use a 26" tube and that would
be pretty close too.

Re: [RBW] 650 vs. 650B

The problem isn't with the "650" part of the sizing. If you stick 650x18
tubes into 650x36 tires, yes, the tubes will seem thin.

Re: [RBW] Cross levers on 46cm Noodle bars?

I have the interrupter levers on three road bikes, two of them on Nitto
Noodles. I recommend them unconditionally. I probably use them less than 10
percent of the time, but they are simply great to have. There are almost no
drawbacks, except that they may interfere with a handlebar bag.

Re: [RBW] Route from San Jose to Santa Cruz

2011-01-28 Thread Horace
My preferred route is to take the Los Gatos Creek trail up to
Lexington Reservoir, take Alma Bridge Road along the east side of the
reservoir, and take Old Santa Cruz highway to Summit Road, to Soquel
San Jose Road, and take that down to Soquel. There is a fair amount of
traffic on Soquel San Jose Road as you approach Soquel.

The Google Maps route takes you down Mountain Charlie, which I've gone
up, but not down. It's narrow, steep, and has rough pavement. It's a
popular route northbound (its steep grades attract a lot of climbers),
but I don't hear of people taking it in the southbound direction much.

I've taken Highway 9 too. It is okay early on weekend mornings, but
there is quite a bit more traffic than Old Santa Cruz Highway/Soquel
San Jose.

Re: [RBW] RBW style bike security

2011-01-25 Thread Horace
A good approach is to use both a U-lock AND a cable with its own lock.
Thus, a thief would require two different sets of tools to steal the
bike, and would likely just pick an easier target.

Bike theft was a big annoyance when I lived in Berkeley. Things got
better when I moved to the suburbs.

Re: [RBW] Tubus Fly for trunk bag?

2010-11-28 Thread Horace
I use an Arkel Tailrider on a Tubus Fly on my Romulus. The Fly is too narrow
for most trunk racks, but if you call up Arkel, they'll make a Tailrider
with extra-long straps that will enable it to work with the Fly (they'll
charge a few bucks more). Additionally, the Tailrider is sufficiently
low-profile and stiff to work with the narrow platform of the Fly. I've been
happy with this setup, but lately I just throw an Ortleib Front Roller on
the rack for the extra capacity and easier access. I don't worry much about
aerodynamics.

You can see from the following photo that I was able to mount the Fly to the
seatstay eyelet on my Romulus:

Re: [RBW] Re: Sacramento Blogger Profiles His & Her Quickbeams

2010-08-20 Thread Horace
With the SKS fenders:

1) Don't cut down the fender stays after installation.
2) Instead of putting the plastic caps on the fender stays, I ground
all the edges off the tips with a dremel tool.
3) I carry an 8mm wrench as part of my tool kit (I started carrying
the Park MT-1 tool).

To fix a flat I loosen the fender stays with the 8mm wrench and the
rear wheel comes out fine; after the wheel is back on, I re-tighten
the stays.

You can probably use an open-comb double-edge safety razor, like this:
http://www.classicshaving.com/catalog/item/522941/337255.htm

If you really want to try a straight razor without the huge up-front
investment cost, you can try one with disposable blades:
http://www.amazon.com/Parker-SRW-Stainless-Razor-120/dp/B002ONHBBW/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&s=beauty&qid=1281588364&sr=8-4

I've tried a similar version to this, and went back to my safety razor. The
straight razor gave a really close shave, but it was too scary for me.

Re: [RBW] Man-Topic [Shaving Facial Hair]

2010-08-11 Thread Horace
I knew this topic would eventually show up on the list. :-)

The odd arms race in multi-blade cartridge razors mirrors the constant
increase in bicycle cassette sizes from 5-speed to 6- to 7- to 8- to 9- to
10- to 11-

In 2004 The Onion ran an article making fun of this, predicting that
eventually there would be five-blade cartridges.
http://www.theonion.com/articles/fuck-everything-were-doing-five-blades,11056/
(salty language warning)

Campy and Shimano are up to, what, 11 speeds now? Is that not ridiculous?

I use a Merkur classic safety razor and it is like a fine single-speed bike.

Re: [RBW] what a difference a cm makes

2010-08-06 Thread Horace
I use a Sharpie. I've found that the proper height varies a bit from year to
year depending on my level of fitness and flexibility, and the type of shoes
and shorts I'm wearing. But it's usually a difference of a few millimeters
at most. A centimeter sounds huge to me, so it does not surprise me that you
notice a dramatic difference there.

You've exceeded the capacity of the derailleur.

differing ideas of how rear derailleur capacity is stated.

The top left section of this page discusses it:

One more good thing about the FiberFix replacement spoke is that it
does not require cassette removal to use. And it comes with a spoke

Re: [RBW] Centering Hub Axles

2010-05-28 Thread Horace
It doesn't matter if the hub is centered on the axle exactly. The rim
is centered between the flanges, and the cone nuts will always be a
set distance from the flanges because they seat into the bearing cups.
As long as the end of the axle doesn't stick out so much that it
interferes with your quick release, you should be good. Just eyeball
it.

If you're really fastidious, though, a Vernier caliper will measure to
one tenth of a millimeter and cost about $10. They're great to have
around for other bike maintenance tasks (especially to answer the
question, "is this crown race ISO or JIS?").

Assuming indexed thumbies, on the tops of the bars, using a Rapid Rise
rear derailleur will do the opposite of what you want. That is,
pushing the right lever forward will cause the bike to go into a
higher gear. My wife's bike is set up this way (with a Rapid Rise rear
derailleur) and that's how it works.

Don't drill the downtube. The tubing wall is less than a millimeter thick.
You wouldn't be able to tap it for threads. I doubt the fork tubing is much
thicker either, if at all.

Yeah, that's the way it is for me too. There are small indentations in the
saddle where my sit bones land. If I were to try a different saddle, I'd
measure the distance between those: it's probably useful information.

Nice looking bike! I remember test riding one of those when they came out,
but it wasn't different enough from my Univega at the time to justify
buying. I eventually got a Columbus SL Guerciotti, and then... 14 years
later, a Romulus.

As far as the downtube shifters go -- once you're used to them, it's a
non-issue. Kind of like driving a manual transmission car. If you're happy
with barends, though, those are fine too. I left the barends on my Romulus
for the first year and a half, but when I changed the handlebar tape, I put
on DT shifters.

Re: [RBW] Re: Chris K's Roadeo

2010-03-18 Thread Horace
They allow for cleaner cable routing; the cables are shorter, and it keeps
the handlebars neat; they're less likely to bump into my knees; they're less
likely to get damaged in a crash or fall; they allow for easier handlebar
swaps; they're compatible with a wider array of old shift levers; the cable
routing won't rub against the head tube and wear the paint off; they're less
expensive, lighter, and better looking.

Moreover, on a mid- to small-sized frame, with the handlebars slightly below
saddle height and riding on the hoods, reaching to the handlebar ends is
about the same as the distance reaching to the downtube shifters (I ride a
59).

Re: [RBW] Re: google maps

There is a big yellow box and a link on the left side of the screen that
says:

*"Bicycling directions are in beta.*
*
*
*Use caution and please report unmapped bike routes, streets that aren't
suited for cycling, and other problems here."*

The reporting form allows you to specify which part of the directions is in
error, and what is wrong with it.

If you want the service to get better, and you have local information --
then improve it!

I don't think anybody suggests that EVERY carbon frame or fork will fail in
the next XX years. In fact, probably a TINY fraction of a percent MIGHT.

I also don't think that EVERY Toyota on the road is going to accelerate
unexpectedly and uncontrollably within the next XX years either.

The point is that if the consequences are severe enough, then it's not much
fun playing the numbers game.

To: RBW Owners Bunch

> Newlite Roadbike. TheROADEO<---final name, final spelling, thanks

for all your input and don't take offense.

> This is really Mark's bike, by which I mean he asked for it/suggested

it as a bike for clubbies. He's a club rider a couple of days a week,

and rides his cross bikes--which to me are light enough, at 19-20lb,

even with fatty tires (and he's still the fastest by a good margin,

and the humblest). But he sees his fellow clubbies buying road bikes

with carbon this and that, and was thinking hmm, they should get a

nice lugged steel bike, and if we made it light enough and roadynuff

they probably would.

Originally,'twas gunnabe for short reach brakes, but nobody here

really rides with those anymore, so, with some input from Jay's,

they'll use standard reach brakes, which means...about 56mm reach,

about like the 'bouillet.

TUBING: The goal is a clubbie bike, so it's going to be clubbie light,

and it should, ideally, be ridding by somebody who is, if not clubbie

light, at least knows how to ride light. A Nureyev-like 225-pounder

who lifts over bumps and veers around pothholes and rides 32mm tires

at 85psi rides lighter than a Nagurski-like 150-pounder who rides 23mm

tires at 115psi and hits everything with a stiff body and locked arms.

So, it's hard to give this bike a weight limit. I should point out

that you aren't buying an engine with this bike; you're supplying the

engine, and it's good to somewhat match the engine's weight with the

frame's weight.

OK: Up to 57cm, the main tube butts are 0.65, with 0.4bellies. Bigger

than that, 0.8 butts with 0.6bellies. It's superstrong heat-treated

steel, so strength isn't much of an issue. Flex is more of an issue,

but nobody really anymore believes that flexless frames are the goal

(I never have). A more rigid frame matters if you're toting weight,

but not as much if you aren't, and as we introduce this as a

superlight clubbie-bike, its flex-under-a-touring-load shouldn't

matter.

Good grief -- those guys continue to amaze me. Kudos to them. Maybe I'll buy
a new bike this year.

Re: [RBW] A poll: Long distance riding with uprights?

2009-12-19 Thread Horace
I've used Zoom Brahma bars on rides up to 100 miles, but I'm not sure if
that is the kind of "upright" you're talking about. It's more of a flat bar
with a built-in extension. I also have "H" bars on the front of my tandem,
which I've also ridden on rides up to 100 miles.

Most of my bikes have drop bars, though.

Re: [RBW] Quickbeam Chainring Clearance

2009-12-15 Thread Horace
It's pretty tight. But I figured, as long as there was _some_ clearance, it
didn't matter to me.

Re: [RBW] Fork dropouts: lawyer lip

My non-canti Romulus and Quickbeam both have the safety tabs on the fork
tips. I don't mind the extra time it takes to remove a wheel, but I really
resent having to haul the extra weight around.

Well I was going to point out the Tubus Airy, but I guess you wouldn't like
that either. Looks like a great rack, though!! I have the Luna, and I think
it's great. A little narrow for a trunk bag, but I use panniers.
