[RBW] Re: Cheviot (or Sam)

2016-08-12 Thread Irving
Can I add to the list of glowing reviews about the Cheviot?

I've had my Cheviot since last December and have taken it on a 120k rando
ride, Bay Area headlands dirt excursions, S240's and daily commuting trips.

I don't mind dealing with the "guy on a girl's bike" comments. Usually when
you have a bike with albatross bars, a Brooks spring saddle, fenders/racks,
people are already going to have snarky comments about your ride. I will
say that there are plenty of orange Public Mixte's

 in
San Francisco, which my Cheviot has gotten mistaken for on multiple
occasions -_-

Anyways, the Cheviot isn't the best for long spirited rides but it's the
bike I seem to grab before heading out the door most of these days.

Here's a picture of me riding last weekend
 on a S240 campout.

[RBW] Invitation to Samuel P. Taylor Bike Camping (Sat Feb 4 to Sun Feb 5)

2017-01-17 Thread Irving
Posted this to the Bay Area Rivendell Riders group
, but
thought it might be relevant here as well for you Bay Area folk:

Last year, I reserved a group campsite at S480 at Samuel P. Taylor during
Super Sportsbowl Weekend and it was a blast

.

It was some awesome, that I ended up reserving the same Madrone Group
Campsite at Samuel P. Taylor State Park for *Saturday February 4th, 2017. *The
site is pretty huge and there are flush toilets and showers, multiple
picnic tables, a fire ring, a few outdoor grills and the campground host
sells firewood.

I'm open for the route this year: we can either do the normal road way
through Fairfax to the Cross Marin Trail (if conditions are favorable) to
the campsite, or we can do some combination of dirt in the Headlands + Old
Rail Road Grade en route to Fairfax. Also like last year, there are no
planned activities, but last year some of us hiked up Mount Barnabe and
others biked out to Point Reyes Station or Marshall Beach.

Please let me know if you plan on attending or know anyone else who is
interested in joining. Estimated costs are $10-$15 per person to chip in
for campground reservation and firewood costs. Bring your own food and
drink, but sharing and trading are encouraged too!

I know the weather has been pretty crummy so far this year, and I will be
monitoring the weather forecasts and updating the group if cancellation is
necessary, but I'd really appreciate an RSVP so I can get a semi-accurate
headcount.

Questions, comments, concerns?

Hey John,

I have a set of Nitto Mod174 bars. They are very similar to Noodles but the
shorter reach/drop plays very nicely with modern levers with long ramps. PM
me if you're interested, as I may be selling a set.

The Nitto M151F
<https://www.retro-gression.com/products/nitto-m151f-handlebar> is
available in the US and is similar if you wanted a short reach/shallow drop
bar.

[RBW] Re: FREE goodwill gesture: A one-of-a-kind A. Homer Hilsen coffeemug

2016-11-07 Thread Irving
Bill, some important questions:

What type of clay did you use for this coffee mug?

How many ounces of coffee (or other liquids) has this mug seen over it's
lifetime?

Do you have any geo charts or measurements from MugCAD?

The cup specifies that the mug is 650b, but is it compatible with 700c or
26in lifestyles as well?

How would you compare the mouth or lip feel of said mug compared to off the
rack offerings?

[RBW] FS: 60cm Cheviot Complete (Nitto, Sugino, Paul, Brooks, +Dynamo Lights)

2017-06-01 Thread Irving
Hi All, I am located in the SF/Bay Area and am entertaining the idea of
selling my complete Cheviot... either to fund a bike for the
partner/girlfriend/roommate or possibly a Rosco Mountain Mixte project :)

I had the bike built up by the Riven-wizards over at HQ and it's got a
nicer build than their previous demo builds
<https://drive.google.com/open?id=0ByiXHcvXkrUccmhfQXdldHBrdTQ>. Frame is
in excellent condition, minus some paint chipping near the downtube from
u-locking. New chain, cables, cassette and chainrings just installed (under
200 miles).

Full parts list below:

   - Cheviot 60cm Frame in Orange
   - FSA Duron Threaded Headset (Silver)
   - Nitto Mark's Front Rack and Wald 138 Basket
   - Nitto Longboy Rack
   - MKS Lambda/Grip King Pedals
   - Nitto Albatross Handlebars (58cm, Heat Treated)
   - Nitto Technomic Stem (90mm, 25.4 Clamp)
   - Ergon GP-1 Grips (Small)
   - SunRace SLM96 Thumb Shifters (Silver/Black)
   - SRAM 9 Speed Chain and 9 Speed 11-32t Cassette
   - 170mm Sugino Wide Low Crankset (40/26t) with a BBG Bashguard (Black)
   - Shimano CX-70 Front Derailleur
   - Shimano Deore M591 Rear Derailleur
   - Front Mavic A719 Rim (32h, Silver/Black) laced to to SP PV8 Dynamo Hub
   (Black)
   - Rear Mavic A719 Rim (36h Silver/Black) laced to Shimano Deore XT T780
   Rear Hub (Black)
   - Busch & Müller Lyt Basic N Plus and Toplight Line Plus Dynamo Front
   and Rear Lights
   - Paul Racer Brakes 59-73mm Reach (Silver)
   - Kalloy 27.2mm Straight Seatpost
   - Brooks B67 Saddle (Brown)
   - Pletscher Twin Legger Kick Stand
   - Vittoria Voyager Hyper 700x40mm Tires (Well worn, could be replaced)
   - SKS P50 Longboard Fenders (Silver/Black)

   - *Option #1* - Full build as above (front/rear racks, dynamo wheel,
   front and rear lights), $2,400
   - *Option #2* - Front/rear racks, no dynamo wheel/lights, replace
wheelset with generic 32h Mavic Open Sport wheelset, $2,200
   - *Option #3* - No racks, no dynamo wheel/lights, replace wheelset with
generic 32h Mavic Open Sport wheelset $2,000

Here's a picture <https://www.flickr.com/photos/modernfuturist/23081893244/>
of it shortly after it was built, but I can take more if there is serious
interest.

Price is picked up from SF or meetup at RivHQ in Walnut Creek. Shipping,
let's discuss since this is a BIG bike. Not entertaining offers for parting
it out currently!

E-mail me off list if you are interested or have any questions.

There are alternatives to the F5 Titan Stem in the 31.8mm quill variety in
the form of Velo Orange

the Nitto UI-12

[RBW] Bay Area: 3rd Annual Escape from Super Bowl Weekend Campout

2018-01-12 Thread Irving
Hi all!

2 years ago I started a tradition of going on a big campout with my friends
during the Super Bowl weekend. Last year I grabbed a group site at Samuel
P. Taylor, made it open to this list and luckily some members were able to
join! (For those of you who missed out, here are some highlights: 2017
<http://www.boyzonthehoods.com/?p=2803>, 2016
<http://www.boyzonthehoods.com/?p=2756>)

This year I decided to mix things up by grabbing the China Camp Group Site
for Saturday February 3rd to Sunday February 4th. I'll be organizing a roll
out from SF. Route <https://ridewithgps.com/routes/26707176> will look
something like this and East Bay'ers will have opportunity to take bus to San
Rafael <http://goldengatetransit.org/schedules/current/route_40.php>.

Here's some more details on Facebook:
https://www.facebook.com/events/670228923365990/

Let me know if you're interested in joining!

[RBW] Re: Bay Area: 3rd Annual Escape from Super Bowl Weekend Campout

2018-02-05 Thread Irving
Thanks to everyone who showed up! We had about 25-30 people show up to the
Golden Gate Bridge start and then another 6-10 show up at random intervals
throughout the day. The weather was unusually warm for February in the Bay
Area and the jorts and t-shirts were out in full force.

It was a pleasant day meandering through the bike paths and we had a a beer
stop at Marin Brewing Co in Larkspur and then at various grocery stores in
San Rafael. Some chose to take the road entrance along bay to the park and
others opted for the single track entrance to the group site.

Check out some of the photos here:
https://www.instagram.com/explore/tags/superbowlchinacampout/

Hoping to reserve some more campouts in the spring and summer, and
definitely doing this again next year as well!

[RBW] Re: Jones Bar on a Clem H, Appaloosa, or Yves Gomez?

2018-02-05 Thread Irving
I got the 90mm but am rethinking that maybe 80mm may have been the better
choice. I haven't had any issues with the 2 bolts or the stem flexing but
have only tested it on a short singletrack and off road loop this weekend.
I supposed the 4 bolt Nitto quill 31.8 is more secure but it's much shorter
so you'll have to determine if it has enough extension for you.

[RBW] Re: Rivs with the Jones Loop/Bend H-Bar (Map/Ahearne too)

2018-08-06 Thread Irving
I've had Albatrosses on my previous Cheviot and had Chocomoose bars on my
Hunq previously. I love the Jones bars and have been riding them all year
on various dirt rides and tours in the Bay Area.

Some quick thoughts:

   - the Nitto UI-12 is a great 4 bolt stem but it doesn't have a tall
quill height if you need to get the bars UP
   - The nickel plating on the VO 31.8 quill stem is fantastic and it goes
   really well with the finish
    on the Jones
   SG bars
   - If I were to do it over, I'd just get the H-Bend bars... but the Loop
bars have the extra kooky factor and the 2.5 is next level

   - Here are your options:

   - Meet me at 8am at the Golden Gate Bridge and we'll bike 13 miles to
the Larkspur Ferry Terminal to meet with everyone

  - or you can drive and park at Larkspur Ferry Terminal

   - North Bay peepz can take the SMART train to downtown Santa Rosa
   <https://sonomamarintrain.org/schedules-fares>

   - Or you can just drive to Spring Lake Regional Group Campsite (let me
know, since there's only 10 parking passes)

   - How many people can fit at the campsite? A LOT
   <https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VbrEsOLu75c> (actually 75, so please

There are some small tears in the lightweight tent storage bag but the tent

The current model of the Fly Creek UL1 is on sale for $280 at REI but

[RBW] Re: Welder to add v-brake posts in SF Bay Area / Napa?

Hey Abe,

I would highly recommend Erik Billings out of Oakland (Instagram
<https://www.instagram.com/billings_cycle_works/>/Website
<https://www.billingscycleworks.com/contact>). Very easy to contact and
deal with.

He did some surgery on a Crust Bombora

building up soon.

[RBW] Re: Tire Recommendations

2023-08-09 Thread Irving
I went through a similar exercise looking for tires to fit under SKS P65
fenders on my Rivendell Hunqapillar. I ended up with Maxxis Torch 29x2.1's
but they didn't offer me enough fender clearance. They felt like a high
quality tire though from my initial rides around the city to test
clearance. I ended up replacing them with Schwalbe Marathon Almotion's
(VGuard's) <https://www.schwalbetires.com/Marathon-Almotion-11654059> and
those measure closer to 700x48 and feel slightly more durable but less
grippy. Note they have a reflective sidewall, so that may disqualify them
from your "no gumwalls or stripes!" disclaimer.

Maybe the Vittoria Terreno Dry (comes in 700x50)
<https://www.vittoria.com/us/en/tires/gravel-cross/terreno-dry> or the G-One
Superground <https://www.schwalbe.com/en/tour-reader/schwalbe-g-one-speed>
as other alternatives. The G-One overland seems fine if you're riding more
dirt than pavement. I would recommend against the Hurricane just because
it's a wire bead tire, which are generally less fun to ride in my opinion.

If you're looking for something:

[RBW] FS: 2x Schwalbe Marathon Almotion (700x47, 50-622, 28x2.00) - $75 shipped

2023-11-17 Thread Irving

I have 2x Schwalbe Marathon Almotion folding tires
<https://www.schwalbetires.com/Marathon-Almotion-11654059>, ridden for
about 250 miles, still in excellent condition. They measured out closer to
700x47 on my Velocity DYAD and Alex Adventurer 2 rims.

They seem like a really well made and faster/lighter alternative for wire
bead Schwalbe Big Ben's, Kenda Kwick Nine's and Continental Contact
Urban's. Read the Bicycle Rolling Resistance review here
<https://www.bicyclerollingresistance.com/tour-reviews/schwalbe-marathon-almotion-addix>
!

$75 shipped and I'll put them in a USPS priority Tyvek envelope without any
extra packaging.

Thanks for posting this Manny! We had a great time but were definitely
missing you on the ride. I'd like to think Nathan borrowed his puddle move
from you during the ride.

Stay tuned for upcoming dates for the #fauxvet 2.0 and 3.0!

[RBW] Re: Boyz On The Hoods Fauxvet 1.0 Ride

2014-03-04 Thread Irving (boyzonthehoods.com)
Thanks for the comments Hugh. I kind of had a frazzled week before the ride
so I knew my ride report was already going to be a stretch to comprehend. In
my draft post, I began to elaborate on my inner conflicts about living in
the city but it just made the post longer and NOT about bike riding. In
short, I get bummed about living in such an expensive city, I miss my
friends and family in LA (back to BLADE RUNNER, haha) and I have my own
doubts about where I'll be career and life wise years from now... but then
on a ride like this past weekend's, when I meet a bunch of new people who
share the same appreciation of rad bike rides, I can't help but think it's
all worth it.

Really fun ride that was lead by Manny. Definitely did some underbiking
this weekend...

 Magical labor day weekend.

Last real overnight before school takes over my weekends.

Big group towards HMB. Pretty much perfected the route by not riding on
HW1 at all. Beautiful route filled with new dirt trails and trekking
through horse pooped water. Met up with Brian Oei and love-ones who just
recently came back from his tour in Oregon. (Check out that ride report
 here: http://www.boyzonthehoods.com/

 )

Lovely night despite sleeping on the ground. Had to just sleep under a
tarp so ended up with mosquitos making sweet love to my face.
Woke up with semi swollen eye and a soccer ball hitting my head.

Great way to start a morning.

We continued the route, again limited our chances on riding along HW1 and
rode the last hard climb on Purisima. But not before a couple of hikers
lets us smell their scented oils mid way through the climb to help us
 finish strong.

Had a blast of a weekend and great way to finish summer.

Pictures proved that when I don't plan the route things go great:

Manny The water isn't deep but there's horse poop in it Acosta
