Re: [RBW] First Ride of the Platypus
Hey Dave, the Platy looks perfect! Where do you live in Mass? The riding looks great. -MikeSent from my iPhoneOn Nov 30, 2022, at 10:27 AM, DavidP wrote:This morning I squeezed a quick ride in before work - a dangerous thing with most any bike but, as I learned, especially so with the Platypus. A short ride can feel like an appetizer and there is always the temptation to eke out a few more miles.I covered 12 miles of roads, bike paths, and multi-use trails that I've been riding regularly in various loops for the past several years. I have several bikes that are well suited to these types of mixed surface rides and they all bring something different to the table. My Platypus is built with these types of rides in mind with Cliffhanger rims, Gravel King 50mm (rear) and Fleecer Ridge endurance 55mm (front) tires, and 650mm wide Tosco bars. The Platypus is my first Rivendell and the first one I've ever ridden. I've gotten a few short rides in before this one but those were mostly about setup rather than riding. My goodness, what a bike it is. I guess the best way to describe the ride could be "cruisy zoomy", it's a very easy going yet zippy ride.It is supremely comfortable and can be a very upright cruiser, though even when ridden this way feels responsive. My setup with a 120mm stem puts me at a ~75 degree back angle with my hands fully rearward on the grips of the Tosco bar, perfect for taking in the scenery and appearing approachable when encountering dog walkers on multi-use trails.I spend most of my time with the heels of my palms on the front of the grips, palms over the brake lever clamps, fingers either loosely draped over or wrapped around the taped bends of the Tosco bar, giving about a 60 degree back angle. This is a good home base position for forward progress, still balanced enough to not put noticeable pressure on the hands.Moving my hands a bit forward, resting the heels of my palms on the brake lever clamps, and bending the elbows more gets me to a ~45 degree back angle to stretch out a bit or get lower in the face of wind. The forward flats of the bar are also usable when wanting to get to the same angle with less elbow bend and is nice option on open road sections, though I doubt I'll bother taping there.During standing efforts I can hold the bars back at the grips or up at the bends - both positions work fine and I found myself doing both in different places. In all positions the fit is roomy and the handling is responsive but not twitchy.I still haven't installed a front derailleur but a 46x34 low gear is enough to grunt up most of the short climbs on this route. I did opt to walk one short and steep pitch on a trail rather than manually changing to the 30t ring.I also haven't settled the front carrying method yet but am leaning towards a 137 basket and bag. For this ride temps were in the upper 30Fs and wanting a place for a layer and extra pair of gloves, I borrowed the Swift Catalyst from my wife's bike to hold those things and my pump. I do plan on putting a bottle cage on the bike but the stem bag is a really convenient spot for the primary water bottle.A fantastic first ride (including a deer sighting!) for a fantastic bike.I took a few photos to commemorate the occasion:(Our local open space stewards decorate trees throughout town lands this time of year; it's kind of a scavenger hunt.)(Excuse the poor photo - this guy was a ways off after he and two does dashed across the path in front of me.)-Dave (5'11"' on a 60cm Platy in Massachusetts) -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. Re: [RBW] Re: Susie / Gus questions
If we’re talking tires, take a look at the Kenda Booster Pro. It comes in 29x 2.6 and 27.5x2.8 and both in 120 TPI with standard casing and a more puncture resistant casing, both tubeless ready.I have the 29x2.2 version and they are a surprisingly fast and not buzzy on pavement and very very grippy tire on gravel and single track. I have them in the standard casing and they feel really solid and don’t squirm with running lower pressure. A quick look at the tech specs and the claimed weights are very light for a 29x2.6 tire( 681 +/-34 g for the standard casing and 763 +/- 38g for the more puncture resistant casing. Again, I only have the 29x2.2 tires so can’t speak of real world experience of the 29x 2.6 or 27.5x2.8 but if the characteristics carry over, it is a wonderfully fast and grippy tire Sent from my iPhone > On Oct 29, 2022, at 7:50 PM, Luke Hendrickson > wrote: > I appreciate it. ❤️ > > On Saturday, October 29, 2022 at 7:45:47 PM UTC-7 jmlmu...@gmail.com wrote: >> Luke, >> >> I'm so sorry for your loss. But they are a lot of fun on the single track, and until I get them into some real mud, I think they're all I need. Basically, they ride like a really good touring tire, I think. Plenty comfortable, plenty capable, plenty durable, but not especially supple or fast. Of course, the air pressure can really impact how supple they feel, and to a degree, change how boggy they feel. I'd really like a 2.5" or 2.6" tire with a similar tread and a suppler casing. The Scwalbe Big Ones were a chubby 60mm and they were my favorite for a long time. They weren't quite enough on single track, and the skinnier G Ones - 57mm - probably won't be either. I really think these fat G-Ones do so well on the single track because of their chub, not the tread. And I'm going to keep them on at least long enough for me to ride them in the deep sand at the beach this winter. I have a feeling they'll do even better than the Big Ones there. If the WTB Ranger was available in 27.5 right now, I'd give that a try. I hear good things about the Teravail Ehline in 27.5 x 2.5, but it has a more aggressive tread than I want for riding on pavement. So for an all around bike that sees 50% single track and 50% pavement, I think these are about as good as it gets. Hey Erik, Sweet looking Gus!In reading your post it seems like your missing a dropper option, Have you considered putting on a quick release at the seatpost binder bolt? You said you’ve been riding many iterations of MTBs since the 80s so I’m sure you’ve had a bike with one before.I put one on my Atlantis and it’s great for dropping the seat post tool- free when I want to get back a little.I think Riv might sell something on their site. Re: [RBW] Re: Ron's Ortho Bars in stock at Crust
Just a heads up to the group if you missed out on the Crust ortho bars: there is a fellow who makes all types of handlebars under the moniker DoomBars on instagram. He does a lot of swoopy albatross style bars. I’ve ordered 2 pairs from him over the last couple years. He’ll do any sweep/ rise/ width. It’s really actually awesome. He’s really great to work with. They’re made of steel. Very strong but not too heavy. When I ordered I think they were either $100 or $120 might have gone up, not sure. If you’re looking for custom bars they’re hard to beat. -Mike Sent from my iPhone > On Jan 5, 2022, at 6:36 PM, Bones wrote: > > Thanks for the head's up. Jeremy as I am roughly doing a similar search, it looks like SOMA fab shop offers a Nitto UI-12 quill stem( in stock) in 60mm length in 72* or 90*. Im thinking the 90* has a rise of 18*. Re: [RBW] WTB: Short 31.8mm Quill Stem
Jeremy, I’m in the same boat, looking for an exact stem. I’d prefer the Crust or Riv that you referenced. Analog also offers their ‘fingerling’ stem that is similar to what your after but a bit more expensive. -Mike Sent from my iPhone > On Dec 31, 2021, at 7:27 PM, Jeremy Till wrote: > > (apologies for the x-post with iBOB) > > Hi All, > > I'm in need of a short (50-60mm) extension, tall 1" quill stem for 31.8mm > bars with a two or four bolt removable faceplate. Re: [RBW] Re: A Hunq
I believe Rivs last run of Hunqs( Green) looked like a great bike but they did a really short run of them. The chainstay was an in between length( 49cm) of earlier Rivs and the current longer stays. It had less BB drop ( 71mm) and a decent stack/ reach ratio where drop bars were a little more feasible. And it was offered in 700c and 650b in the 59cm size which was pretty neat. And possibly( I can’t remember) no diagatube in the 59 size which turned some people off, not me though. Another run of Hunqs would probably get a lot of interest.-Mike Sent from my iPhone > On Dec 9, 2021, at 7:11 AM, 'Gary L' via RBW Owners Bunch > wrote: > > > I've got a 2015 grey/kidney bean 58 hunq that I bought new and I'm sure that > one was built in Taiwan. I have the rear hub you may want for your singlespeed spare rear wheel idea. It is the contemporary Surly Ultra New rear hub. It is a flip-flop hub, which will take a freewheel on one side and/or a fixed cog on the other. Some people run a freewheel on both sides with hubs like this without issue. It is 135mm OLD, which fits most Rivendells. It has 32 holes and is silver. A nice thing about the Surly New Ultra is that is can be run bolt-on or QR with zero modifications to the hub itself. The axle is hollow to take the QR skewer, but it also comes with bolts (M6x1.0) that thread internally into the axle. The hub has been built into a wheel, but is mechanically perfecto in my view. My price is $60 plus shipping. I will be traveling for work this coming week but can ship when I return. I'd be happy to field questions. Re: [RBW] Re: Seeking advice - Sam Hillborne vs Atlantis
Daniel, the new Appaloosas are being released soon. Maybe a release this week? You gotta be on it though, recent runs of Riv frames tend to go fast! There’s a 60cm in this run, which might fit your PBH well and it’s a little shorter in the TT than the Atlantis which would/ might allow you you to ride drops; and a chainstay that’s in between the length of Atlantis and Hillborne and has a sloping TT which will allow you to get the bars up and has tire clearance between what the Atlantis and Hillborne will allow. I think the frames will be orange and mermaid , which are great colors. Take a look at the site or always give them a call. Re: [RBW] Re: Weight question / I'm obviously confused
Jim, several years ago I had a double TT 64cm Atlantis that I took on a tour up around the Olympic peninsula. It also was a touch too large for me. In touring mode I had it loaded up with a Pass and Stow front rack with a basket on top and two medium sized low rider front panniers. On the rear I had a medium saddle sack that sat on a Nitto r-14 rack.It was probably 75/25 ; front/ rear weight distribution. That bike rode awesome( to me) in that configuration.Leaving an empty-ish camp one morning on a quiet stretch of road, I rode no handed for ~7miles on a gently curvy road. It felt smooth and in control. (. There were mile markers and when solo on the road sometimes you make games for yourself). I’ll never forget that. Thanks Curtis and Robert for the ride suggestions. These seem like a great start. I actually did ride Elfin Forest yesterday and the climb up was steep and hike a bike but one you get up there you’re sort of riding a ridge line. One thing that is new to me in SoCal cycling are goatheads. I’ve seen posts about them. I must have 10 in each tire but tires didn’t go flat until I started pulling them out when I was done the ride.
