I wouldn't argue. I'm halfway tempted to throw the Moustache bar back on my
Sam with a DD stem--it actually came from Riv with a 100 mm Technomic +
Moustache combo--but I'm happy with the Albas for now, so I won't be going
to the trouble.
Still not settled on a handlebar purchase for my mtb.
I'll be on my Sam with 42 mm Soma Shikoros and Treetop saddle wedge (via
Jeff). I'll likely remove the basket for the ride, although I've been
enjoying the setup with my makeshift "rando bag," a large canvas fanny
pack. :)

Thanks, Bill. My Sam has eyelets just under my canti mounts and near the
bottom of the fork blades. Hopefully that clears it up.

It's interesting to note that location, perhaps even more than season,
dictates what we pack.
For example, it makes a ton of sense for DP to plan for worst case
scenarios given that he's camping (I'd guess, at least) at, near, or above
the tree line in the Rockies.
Also, Phillip is sure to bring
Agreed on all counts, Bill. Patronizing LBSs is fun, and I love the
connection with owners and workers. It feels good to support real people.
But it's not always that easy for me. I tinker with my bikes because it's
fun, and I enjoy it, not because I *need *to. Can I always afford to pay my

Sunday--it'll likely be a game-time decision for me. I suppose I could
throw the fenders back on my Sam and make it work, but I'm not really
looking to ride all day in the rain. Here's to hoping for a shift in the
forecast!
No sweat!
Cool thing about the Shikoros is they aren't overly heavy even though they
have flat protection in both the tread and sidewalls. I've only ridden a
couple hundred miles on mine at most, but I'm more than pleased with the
ride quality.

Thanks, Brian! Carradice mentions something on their site called a "Bagman
Adaptor." I have no idea what that is and I don't know much about these
supports in general as I've never used them before. I'd scoop yours up, but
I'm looking for an Expedition. Good luck with the sale!

I wish I could get my mitts on a Jones Plus for a test ride! I love my
new-to-me Krampus, but I can't help but feel like the Jones is my grail
bike. I keep hearing and reading that it essentially defies categorization
in all the right ways. I also hear that it's fantastic for long rides, on

It looks like they were announced in the most recent BLUG post. Only six

Yeah, it seems like a Jones Plus may be in my future! Going to have to
pinch some pennies for that day to come, though--maybe by next fall unless
a used one shows up somewhere (unlikely). Luckily, the Krampus may not
stand up when A-B'd with the Jones Plus, but it's still a
Bill asked how folks are fit for Jones bikes.
The website says riders 5'7" to 6'2" fit the 24" medium. It also says in
many places that buyers are encouraged to call Jeff to talk specifics. So
in the end, I think Jeff would say, "Call me to discuss fit." Guessing
wouldn't be a great move
Another possibility that is similar the the Jones in terms of angles is the
Surly Open Bar. It comes in 25.4. I used it on a vintage mtb build that I
took on a pretty challenging off-road tour in VA this past summer. There
are a couple of hand positions. I didn't have any numbness after hours in

Awesome responses, folks!
While I firmly believe that my n=2, if I were to add a bike, it would most
definitely be a tandem. I planned to buy a 26" wheeled mtb Burly Rock and
Roll off a friend who bought a HHH tandem, but in the end I couldn't

Thanks, Bill. I trust your analysis and was hoping you'd chime in. It
sounds like I could sell the 32F and get an M18, but it wouldn't
necessarily be an upgrade in capacity, despite the numbers.
I could also kludge together something with the Surly rack so it could fit

I think the claimed handling benefits for a bikepacking setup generally are
only benefits for those who want to ride aggressively on an off-road tour.
My bikes definitely handle more naturally and with less forethought

Steve's right. You can get a brand new silver Tubus Tara and LM-1 mounts
