Thanks, Bill. Friction it is. And reasonable ambitions for how the pie is

[RBW] Stubby Front Derailleur with a triple crank?

2022-06-01 Thread Rod Holland
I'm wondering if the Stubby Skeleton Key front derailleur offered by Riv
will work with triple cranks and shifters? 3x9, hopefully. 3x10? If it will
work with a triple, any guidelines for success-prone configurations?

This isn't directly addressed in the product copy on the Riv site, except
"This will work with all Silver cranks."

Doug, "that last creak of tinkering" is both poetic and precise. There was
a distinct last creak when the bolt abruptly gave by several degrees before
refusing to budge again.

[RBW] Re: Looking for a replacement for the old MUSA short sleeved merino wool jersey

2019-07-28 Thread Rod Holland
While I've got a couple of Kucharik jerseys on order, they haven't arrived
yet; more on those later. I've worn the MUSA short sleeve jerseys that I
bought from Riv some years back for a number of summers, and think highly
of them. They're quite light weight, corresponding roughly to what
Smartwool used to call "microweight", and currently calls "150". The
Portland Cyclewear merino wool jerseys are beautifully made, with a
somewhat heavier weight, but an open weave that has allowed me to wear them
on several summer rides without overheating. They wick moisture well, and
support evaporative cooling. I'll post again when I've got more experience
with these, the Kucharik, and a Yeti Turq merino jersey that appears to be
as light weight as the MUSA.

The 26" Surly LHT fits Rat Taps with fenders, and is a hoot to ride. (Lest

[RBW] Re: Heard my first "Hey, nice Riv!" today. Felt chuffed

On a ride with my new-to-me orange Ram, I encountered two episodes of this,
on a 20-mile ride on Minuteman Commuter Bikeway:

May I photograph your bicycle? (this really happened...)

Interestingly, they photographer wasn't keying off "Riv" per se, but
thought it was a beautiful steel bike (and who could argue with that?)...

The second episode was on the return leg of the same ride, when a gentleman
overtook me and matched speed for about 1/4 mile, asking me about the bike
in great detail, and praising it to the stars. It's a little like walking a
really cute dog... I guess good design will do that for you.

Re: [RBW] Re: PSA- Rambouillet FS in Boston

Peter,

Once again, thanks so much for the pointer to this bike at BnB!

Today I swapped the GR-9s and Power Grips for a set of MKS Allways platform

I also discovered that the Schwalbe tires that I thought were 28mm are
actually 32mm; I'm thinking I'll just swap in some Stampede Pass ELs and
not pursue putting on any larger tires or fenders (with brakes to match)
for the remainder of the season, and just ride the bejesus out of this bike
before the snow, ice, and road salt arrive..

Well, I came to Grand Bois and Compass EL tires early on my Surlys, and
found they transformed the ride experience; I've logged 12K+ miles on the
700c LHT, much of that unloaded. It's definitely a different dynamic
profile, but I find it agreeable. You might say I have a soft spot in my
head for touring bikes... An apologia can be found at

I have an MIT Atlantis build in progress, btw, and just picked up an old

I've had success with GB Cypres on DM-18 rims. Similar remarks apply to

similar, but I've never put my hands on CR-18s, and don't actually know

[RBW] Re: Jack Brown green/Cypres/Compass 32/ impressions?

2018-08-25 Thread Rod Holland
No experience with Jack Browns of either hue, but have put in several
thousand miles on GB Cypres ELs, and about a thousand miles on Compass
Stampede Pass ELs. Both these tires are 32mm +/-. I also ride a range of
Compass tires in larger sizes on other bikes: Barlows, Snoqs, RTPs, (all
ELs) even the now-discontinued 26"x1.75" "Compasellas".
I have nothing but good to say about the larger Compass tires, and note in
passing that I've seldom had them flat.

The GBC ELs I originally rode on my LHT, as my gateway drug to light,
supple tires. After the doughty 37mm Continental Contact touring tires I
had been running, they transformed the ride of that bike, and opened my
eyes. I rode them over the full gamut of surfaces I was already in the
habit of riding on the Trucker: pavement rough and smooth, urban and rural,
dirt with the standard New England ration of roots and rocks, and the odd
stretch of gravel. While I changed the occasional flat, this was not a big
deal: didn't take long, and the tires were easy to work with and seated
right the first time (I did learn to search assiduously for sharps still
buried in the tread however; no sense changing the same flat twice). I had
been clinging to the Contis in part from fear of flats, and found I needn't
have bothered.

When the 38mm Barlow Pass EL was introduced, I swapped a pair onto the LHT,
and loved them. But I found myself missing the Cypres's extreme nimbleness,
and built up a Rawland Nordavinden frameset in part as a platform for
continuing to run those tires; it continues to do so to this day, and rides
like a dream, comfy and nimble, with the added pleasures of a lively frame
and low-trail handing. When an older Ebisu frameset fell into my hands, I
took it as an opportunity to try the 32mm Compass Stampede Pass ELs, and
love them, too. When the Cypres ELs on the Rawland wear out, I will have to
make a decision as to whether to order another set from Japan, or to
replace them with Stampede Pass ELs. We'll see about that when the time
comes, and I may try swapping the tires between the two bikes to try to get
a little more insight into how much of what I'm experiencing is the
frameset and how much is the tires (the wheelsets and drivetrains of the
two bikes are identical). If I had to equip a 3rd bike with 32mm tires, I'd
probably go with the Stampede Pass ELs, since they do seem to corner a
little better and have a more robust interface between tread and casing (a
documented weakness of the Cypress that, mercifully, has never bit me).

In the meantime, I'm building up an MIT Atlantis as a platform for a pair
of Antelope Hill ELs, a sort of human-powered hovercraft.

Re: [RBW] Re: Oh the humidity!

Had a nice 31-mile ride through Eastern Massachusetts, 96degF and 50%
relative humidity (I think). Ride report
at https://www.bikeforums.net/20492484-post7556.html. Similar conditions
today, but I'm sitting it out; turns out to be the second day of an ozone
alert; noticed the haze yesterday, and then found out that had a name.
Drank a liter and a half of water, evaporative cooling worked like a charm:
sweat is our friend, at least while the bike is moving. I grew up in South
Georgia, so I'm used to worse.

[RBW] N+4?

2018-07-02 Thread Rod Holland
As someone wisely pointed out on this group, if you see a Riv frame you
like, it's best to buy it when it's offered. On that basis, I just ordered
a New Atlantis, a.k.a. MIT Atlantis, a.k.a. LWB Atlantis. It's a 59cm,
meaning 700C with a truss. The joke is that I already have three other
builds queued up (an Ocean Air Rambler 700C, a Sam Hilborne, and an old
Nobilette go-fast); I've done a really good job of not getting to these,
due to a range of distractions, but have full build kits for the Rambler
and Hillborne, and need to spend some quality time in the basement, putting
them together. Given that it's also prime riding season, what this really
means is that I need some weather foul enough to make me prefer wrenching
to riding.

So why, when I already have builds for three more very likable bicycles
queued up, on top of five bikes already in the stable that give me real
satisfaction to ride, would I go and order another frameset? Rocks in my
head? Poor impulse control? Probably. But it falls out like this, I think:
I've got a soft spot in my head for touring bikes, and already own two;
I've got another soft spot in my head for Compass tires, and was an early
adopter of Barlows, RTPs, and Snoqs, all Extralights; none of my current
bikes would accommodate the Antelope Pass, I've wanted an Atlantis for
years, and the Riv long chainstays experiment is intriguing; I have also
admired the old ANT truss bikes, and missed the window for those. So,
godnose when I'll get it built, but I've taken the plunge...

... and when they are all built, what on earth am I going to do with 9

[RBW] Model(s) going away

2018-06-15 Thread Rod Holland
Blame it on intertextuality, but I recall Grant saying elsewhere that the
Clem-L would probably replace the Clem-H going forward, and so gave the text a
narrow reading: last of the Clem-Hs, but not last of tbe Clem-*s... unless they
bring back the Clementine model name.

Based mostly on remarks in the catalog, I read the comments about Sams and MIT
Homers as suggesting staggered availability of the two models, not extinction
for the Sams. But as they say at the Cretaceous-Tertiary Boundary, "Shit
happen, and the situation evolves."

Re: [RBW] Hot waxing chains?

2018-06-02 Thread Rod Holland
By way of a minority report, I switched from Chain-L to TriFlow a few years
ago, after a fervent recommendation from a bike mechanic. This struck me as
eccentric at the time, too light, but I tried it and have been getting good
results. Not as messy as Chain-L, does seem to keep the chain lubed. One
drop per link, re-apply when that seems to be called for. I ride in Eastern
Massachusetts, so rainy and sometimes snowy. About 30% of my riding is on
dirt.

[RBW] Re: Tire Pressure Question

2018-05-24 Thread Rod Holland
I ride my 32mm Stampede Pass Extralights inflated to 60psi front, 65psi
rear; 235lb rider. I have no doubt I could run them at a somewhat lower
pressure. I remember a long period of experimentation with GB Cypres ELs,
looking for the lowest sensible pressure, that ended when I started getting
pinch flats. In the years since, I've settled on 60/65 in that size range,
and been happy. I'd run 35mm tires somewhat lower.

[RBW] Re: Riv complete: appropriate mechanical expectations?

2018-05-22 Thread Rod Holland
Thanks, all, for sharing your experience with this. Most all the fittings I
had occasion to expose were well-prepared (grease, anti-seize, loctite, or
light oil). There were one or two exceptions, but they were easy to
recognize and deal with, and tended to be trivial anyway (e.g., fender
mount bolts on the fork). And EVERYTHING that could be tuned, was tuned: no
fussing with brakes or derailleurs. Now, I didn't pull the bottom bracket
to check for grease, and didn't want to add a 3-day delay for a
conscientious frame-saver application (I reckon that can keep until the
Winter bike-tinkering season). I just put everything that wasn't put
together, together, added grease, anti-seize, or Tri-Flow as needed, and
pretty soon it was a bike.

Thank you, Rivendell!

[RBW] (My sweetie's) New Bike Day

2018-05-21 Thread Rod Holland
I got my consort a 45cm Clem-L complete bike. This arrived Saturday, and I
put it together today.

Peeking in the box: fun with lossless compression.

Out of the box, but still in a yoga position.

Now it's a bike (some assembly and a bit of grease and anti-seize required).

Immediately thereafter, the bike escaped the basement and Ellen did some
tentative riding, to permit adjustment of saddle and handlebar height (both
lowered). She also discovered that V-brakes aren't like the other children,
but no harm done (I think). Still to be added are lights, a bell, a water
bottle cage, and a saddlebag, and likely a set of Compass Naches Pass
Extralights. We'll take a shake-down cruise together tomorrow.

I get set to attach pedals, saddle, bell, etc., it occurs to me to ask what
people's experience with the mechanical preparation of Rivendell completes
has been. Should I expect that everything that should be lubed, has been
lubed? Do I need to second-guess the build? I've never heard stories of
that sort here, so I'm guessing not. What are people's expectations for
finishing/prepping a newly-delivered Riv complete bike?

Related question: does Riv normally frame-save their complete bikes?

[RBW] Clem-L, Bosco handlebars: where to put the bell?

2018-05-10 Thread Rod Holland
I've ordered a 45cm Clem-L for my consort, which rumor has it should be
delivered one of these first days. This is the stock build with Bosco bars.
Question to those with Bosco experience: what's a good place to mount a
bell in that style cockpit? This will be a Crane Suzue
, so it will be loud if she
can reach it... Most of my experience configuring cockpits has been with
drops or flat bars, I don't have a good sense of hand positions on Boscos.

[RBW] Re: Atlantis tires rec request

2018-05-06 Thread Rod Holland
Tim,

I've been using RTP Extralights on my Surly Trucker DeLuxe (a 26"-wheeled
LHT, for all intents and purposes). I find they measure out at 53mm (2.08")
on Sun Rhyno Lite rims. What is the inner size of the rims you'll be
wanting to mount your tires on? The Rhyno Lites have an interior measure of
22mm. The RTPs fit under Planet Bike Cascadia ATB fenders. You really might
want to give them at try, if they're what you're really looking for. Of the
two other tires you mentioned, I'd got with the Naches Pass EL over the
McClure. The McClure is the last of the "Compassela" tires, good as far as
they go, but just not as supple as any of the EL variants.
