Re: [RBW] Club Rides On A Racing Platypus
Leah: Good ride! A senior lady in our club can hang at 18 on flat roads on her Clem L. She has made believers of many. Hills slow her down some, but she can ride with whatever group she wants to. On one Sunday afternoon ride, my friend Frank and I were felling peppy at about 18 mph and she dropped us like we were sacks of lead. The Clem has Conti Contact Speed tires (RBW calls them "basketball") instead of Schwalbe. racks and fenders tho. Tailwinds. On Tuesday, May 3, 2022, 07:37:56 AM CDT, Bicycle Belle Ding Ding! wrote: I moved the Racing Platypus into the faster class last night. It was 15-16 mph, and the route chosen was 26.4 miles. That’s the longest club ride I’ve attended, and not knowing if I could keep pace made it a little terrifying. The group was nice enough but skeptical. I was the last to arrive, and as I wheeled my sparkly raspberry Billie-barred mixte into their group of lethal-looking black carbon drop-barred bikes I wanted to disappear. “Are you with us?” asked one member. Cringe.“Pretty bike,” said another. (Not “nice bike” mind you.)My old group pulled up and the ride leader said, “Leah, aren’t you coming with us?” Right there, I just about caved. Feeling like a traitor to the one group and a pretender to the other, I diplomatically said I’d just try the faster group this once and see how it went. Everyone (but me) clipped in and we set off. I remember thinking that this was crazy. But, everything I do now scares me, so away I went. There were new things I noticed in this group. They don’t stop - they will slow up a bit to let people catch up if need be, and they obey traffic signals but other than that, we are moving. You drink your water on the go. They ride closer together, probably for drafting purposes. They all magically accelerate at a certain point in the ride. I don’t know why they did it, but I figure it was because they knew we were at the end of the ride. Like horses racing home toward the barn. They talk more about gear and bikes/components. They are not appreciating the flowering trees. My Apple Watch shows we averaged a perfect 16.0 mph for 26.4 miles. We hit speeds of 18.4 mph at times. I thought it was fun to fly around at that speed but also hoped we weren’t expected to keep it up for the entirety of the ride. My heart rate averaged a very respectable 147 beats/min. I did not feel spent or sore or beat up after the ride. As I type this this morning I feel fantastic and will lift weights after coffee. You can ride your Rivendell to a club ride. You can even join one of the faster classes. You will be comfortable and you will get to turn your head and enjoy the scenery. But you will have to endure some skepticism and you should do it good-naturedly. That way it will be ok for them to change their minds about you when the ride is over. It’s really fun to do group rides and be with bike people. I like having someone else choose the route so I’m free to enjoy the scenery. But this is not the highest use of the bicycle. I really like riding to get places and do errands best of all. I am glad I don’t have to choose one or the other. My bikes can do both. I have this crazy idea. Next week, I could join my previous group and bring my big, huge, hero Clem. Wouldn’t that be wild? Has anyone ridden a Clem on a club ride? Ah yes, Rivendell models come and go with great frequency. I tell people, if you see what you like, buy it. Chances are it won't be there later. Some models were made in more quantity so your chances at a resale are better. Some are very scarce. To Doug's comment, I would reply, if you think you want a Susie, get it. If you think a Clem or a Platy, or a Cheviot or a Betty Foy or any other model is more your cup of tea, let it slide. I helped a local friend spec her Clem L purchase recently, and we went with upgraded lighter Velocity wheels and the Conti "Basketball" tires instead of the usual Schwalbe rubber. The bike is of course not light, but it rolls like a dream and she (an oboe player in her 60s) cruised a hilly loop today (17 miles, 1,200') and was NOT the last person in (all spaced out 100' or more) So, tubeless may have some benefit, but there are good, ligher choices with conventional set-ups too. Re: [RBW] Re: Which Rivendell frame would you resurrect?
Bill: The "original" "Road" in 1995 was the Riv Road (see RR #2) which came out before the "Standand." It's a nice bike with level TT, normal HT, and basically a Waterford RS front married to a slack seat tube/long stay RBW rear. Made from Reynolds 753, drawn heavier wall than normal for RBW. The bi-plane fork crown is nice too. It is lighter than Ram, Homer, etc, My 54 cm frame weighs 4 lb, 7/8 oz. My 52 Ram frame weighs 4 lb 8 oz. The road forks are not quite as nicely curved as Ram, the stays are single taper. The lugs are Sachs designed, and look powerful. Ram is more typical of Riv curlique designs. My '95 Road is still my "go-fast" bike. "Fast" being relative of course, and related to the rider, not the ride. The Road Standard came out in 1996 with sloped TT, extended HT (see catalog #3) Strated out with the same lugs and tubes but changed lugs by '97 iirc. The color doesn't really matter. Ram is spec'd for 37 mm btw w/o fenders. It's the lugs, the double taper stays, the combo of HT and non HT tubing for ride quality, the beautiful fork blade curve, the un dimpled chain stays, the fillet brazed drop outs, The Panasonic or Urema paint work with lug window details and the neutral steering that corners beautifully on fast descents. Re: [RBW] Re: What epoch of Rivster are you?
This is one of the more entertaining threads for sure. I'm glad that others also prefer the first wave of Riv bikes. My original Road iis one of the 2 best bikes I've owned. The other is a '95 Waterford that has similar geometry in lighter tubing. (Riv used heavy wall Reynolds 753. Waterford stayed with very light stuff). My Ram is also a wonderful bike and it is basically a Japanese made Long low. Rich! Let's let our bikes get together soon. I'm just in MGM. Re: [RBW] Re: MIT Roadeo coming?
I don't think they're using actual niobium tubes (these go in nuclear reactors) but rather an alloy. See this page from Columbus. Re: [RBW] Re: Is the Roadeo gone?
I imagine you could essentially order a Rambouillet or Rodeo as a custom and get it fit to you. Re: [RBW] Re: Wool at 100*+
I have a stash off Ibex Duo wool/poly panel shorts that I cut the pads out from. Find them on Ebay. I have a Kucharik pair bought new without a pad. Also have icebreaker bibs with a pad. My favorites are Smartwool Rambition shorts though, from which I've also cut the pads out. Just a little elastic mixed in with the wool. Under padless shorts, I wear wicking sports briefs in hot weather and wool boxers in cold weather. The Kuchharik kind of sags when wet, which I'm not wild about. The Ibex is comfy but needs a wash with every use. The all wool Smartwool and Kucharik do not. If I'm a little saddle tender after a long ride, I'll use the padded Icebreakers with Bag Balm as the skin glide. I gave up lycra shorts largely for reasons of comfort, not appearance -- I hated the bulky, awkward diapers, the tight clingy fit, and the clamminess when you cool down. Worse, for me, than synthetic jerseys. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. Great idea Steve. Thanks On Thursday, November 2, 2017, 5:16:47 AM CDT, islaystevewrote: Bruce, I responded your request or info on the Old Man Petersen decal on that thread. My 52cm size only came in blue so the green will be kind of neat, I think.
