[RBW] Re: 36t Hyperglide cog source?

2012-02-11 Thread truegolden

Regarding the modification of the rear derailleur to accommodate a
larger cassette / freewheel cog:

Just this week I read about doing that on the bikeforums.net.

A fellow was able to use a water jet cutter of some sort at his
community college to cut a longer cage so he could
use a vintage derailleur and a larger tooth freewheel. Not sure what
measure of success with new set up yet or if he has even had a chance
to test it out.

A search should turn it up that discussion.

old SunTour rd could actually accomodate a 38 t big cog.

[RBW] Re: Threadless Stem Adaptors

2012-02-14 Thread truegolden
I also use the VO stem adapter and like it.

If a really tall one is needed Soma makes one.
http://store.somafab.com/sohiristad.html

I had the tall Soma adapter at one time and it was too tall and I
could only get it to insert far enough to give me the correct height
so I successfully cut off about 2 of it, used a shorter bolt thus
achieving the right height. A buddy is now using the modified Soma and
really likes it as well.

Hey, who out there has experience with threadless stem adaptors like

I guess Nitto makes one also. I know this may be a little off-topic
for the Riv list but I think there are people here with experience
  using these.

My rando bike currently runs a quill stem but I'm considering using
one of these adaptors paired with threadless stem that can accommodate
31.8 bars so that I can run Salsa Cowbell 3 bars. I have them on my
Cross Check now and did a ride yesterday and they're just fantastic.
The really seem like they'd make an excellent bar for randonneuring.
The reach is short, the drop shallow and they flare out a bit in the
drops. It's unfortunate the Salsa doesn't make a 26.0 version and in
silver. Soma makes a similar bar in silver and 26.0 (and 31.8) so I
might try that out first as they're in expensive and I could use them
with my quill stem. The main issue with the Somas is that the widest
  size is 44cm.

Are there any down sides or concerns with using an adaptor like this?

Here are links for the bars if anyone is interested.

[RBW] Gofast f/f: 6.0 lb even!

2018-02-12 Thread truegolden
Not bad indeed Patrick!

I expect you will be glad to get it back on the road soon.

It makes me recall my Joe Starck built Riv Road bike from the same year.

I called it my triple Joe as it was built by Joe , painted by Joe Bell

and had wheels built by master wheelbuilder Joe Young with Phil hubs.

I wish I had that one back.

Speaking of steel frame weights I recently built up a 1980 Centurion Semi Pro

and the 23.5” frame weighed 4.65 and the fork 1.70 for 6.35 lbs total.

Your Joefast is under that one by about 1/3 lb.

Makes me wonder what my old Riv Road weighed.

It was a 61 or 62 cm I think and a heavier seat tube

so probably in the range of my Semi Pro.

Of course I also am more interested in how a bike rides than saving a few
ounces of weight.

That said, reading the thread on a sub 20 lb Roadeo got me thinking of dropping
the weight on one of my bikes

to just 22 lbs. The Centurion is currently at right at 24 I think.

Safe pedaling,

[RBW] Re: 30 Days of Biking!

2020-04-27 Thread truegolden
That's an impressive ride masmojo.

I occasionally will do a long loop around North Dallas to White Rock Lake, up
the Santa Fe Trail , through downtown, up the Katy Trail , through Southern
Methodist University campus and back to North Dallas for around 40 miles. I
hope to do that later this week and that would get me 300 miles for 30 days of
April.

The last two days were much more modest at 4 miles each day as I rode quite a
bit over the weekend and needed to recover a bit.

[RBW] Re: 30 Days of Biking!

2020-04-30 Thread truegolden
Yes, Nathan very similar bikes.

I owned a very customized 1983 Expedition similar to yours and subsequently did
2 self contained bike tours on it of one month each back in 08 and 09. I was
loaded up with 60 pounds of gear and supplies and
toured with a friend who also had an Expedition.

The Expeditions performed very well for those trips.

One trip was across Nevada on Hwy 50 in July. The other was about 30 miles
south of Denver all the way to Yellowstone National Park.

I have very fond memories of both trip. They were quite challenging but very
rewarding adventures for me.

These vintage tourers are no Rivs but have some good qualities for more budget
oriented builds.
