Congratulations! You will love the Riv Ride. On Jun 27, 10:54 am, Rex Kerr rexk...@gmail.com wrote: After a nearly unbearable wait I'm finally a riv owner!!! I drove down on Saturday and picked up my 67cm AHH frame! It's a work of art! I went with a custom color, and after many hours of second guessing my decision I finally got to see it! I have to admit that it came out a lot lighter than I expected from the paint chip, and I was a little bit upset when I first saw it, but once I started hanging shiny bits on it I started to realize that it's probably a lot nicer than what I'd originally asked for, and it's really growing on me -- I think now that it's a really nice color! [The big reveal coming once the shiny bits are properly hung :-) ]. So, speaking of shiny bits... there's one rather important one that I haven't decided on yet! Wheels! I really like the classic polished hubs, and this bike is beautiful and really deserves some nice looking hubs, but a set of Rivy hubs approach the the amount that I was hoping to spend on the entire wheelset! I considered the VO Grand Cru hubs, which are a bit cheaper, but they don't have the 32 spoke hubs that I wanted (I like the look of 32 spoke hubs, and I'm a lightweight rider for my height, I have a touring bike for the heavy loaded stuff). I like freewheels, and 7 speeds is perfect [prefer it over 9], but am probably leaning more toward a cassette just because quality freewheels are getting harder to find. The problem that I'm having is that it's harder to find 135 mm hubs that meet these requirements than 130 mm hubs, as 135 mm stuff is usually MTB oriented and more colorful (usually anodized). So, I'm starting to think about maybe getting a set of road hubs and buying a new axle and respacing it... anybody ever done that? Is it hard to find proper axles? It looks like Harris sells all the parts that I need... Thanks! -Rex -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. The travel parts live in the SS travel case when they aren't being used. I also have travel fenders - Planet Bike Speedez. The Honjos stay home, as do the racks, and the generator hub front wheel.. My Carradice Barley is plenty roomy enough for the riding I do on vacations. So far :-) I can reassemble it in about 45 minutes, and disassemble it to return home in about the same amount of time. However, the combination of Honjo fenders and front rack and Silver brakes makes home (dis)assembly a bit more complex, requiring about 5 hands. :-) I can take fewer tools to the summer place - I keep some basic ones there, as well as chain lube. When the trip was over, I was offered the use of a conference room inside the hotel as the location to do the disassemble and packing. No problem with the airlines. No big bulky bike box with the threat of enormous fees and/or outright rejection hanging over the trip. No danger of severe damage or loss of pieces coming out of the box. The peace of mind in traveling, for me, is priceless. That's why the cost effective argument doesn't make sense. One may be willing to live with the downsides of airline travel with the bike in a card board box rather than pay the admittedly high cost of couplers and case. That's a matter of personal preference. But what one cannot do is obtain the advantages of a coupled bike for less money than the cost of couplers and a hard case. There is also the assembly/disassembly problem. It takes me approximately one hour to unpack and get the bike ready to ride and a little more time to disassemble and pack the bike. For me, if I'm going for a multi-week trip, the time spent on assembly/ disasembly is insignificant. If the trip is for a couple of days, I'll take the Brompton. Again, it's a matter of what one is willing to put up with. If the assembly/disassembly time is so unpleasant and frustrating that it threatens to spoil one's vacation, then the couplers are not worth the cost whatever that is. The first time I got the click was with my touring pedals shortly after my new Quickbeam arrived last November. The click got worse and worse and I ended darn near taking everything off the frame and greasing it. Nothing worked and I though perhaps I'd gotten a faulty bottom bracket. You could feel the click throughout the frame. I kept searching and finally came across this: http://stankertanker.blogspot.com/2008/12/mks-touring-pedal-dismay-an... I took repacked my pedals and haven't had a bit of trouble with them since. Next I got a pair of Grip Kings and threw them on without thinking. Sure enough they clicked within a week. Repacked. All good. The next two pairs of GKs (for other bikes) were taken apart and repacked before I even used them. No noise at all with those. But, like the others, they showed a real lack of factory lubrication. Once they are repacked they are great though. BTW - as I recall there are 12 bearings per Grip King pedal, 11 per Touring pedal. It was kind of a low frequency shimmy, gentle but steady. The bike kept going straight, but with the shimmy. I have a Chris King headset; is it perhaps a little tight? Read somewhere that someone fixed that problem by loosening their headset a bit. The fix I'm familiar with is actually the opposite - either slightly tightening the headset or using super heavy grease (like boat trailer bearing grease) in a loose-ball headset to slow down the response. Bear in mind that there are a _lot_ of variables in the shimmy equation - fore/aft weight distribution, friction into the tires, tire pressure, load positioning, weight, etc - I would see if you can replicate it again before trying anything. The bike creaks constantly; there is some creaking when coasting, but I cannot associate it with anything in particular. Perhaps the Berthoud fenders, perhaps the BB. Then, when pedaling with my hands on the hoods, there was a regular loud creak that towards the end I could replicate when stopped by twisting on the handlebars. Both of my stem bolts are as tight as I can tighten them by hand. This creaking superimposed on the rolling creaks as well and created a cacophony (in my ears) that seemed to get worse towards the end of the ride. Specially if I was pedaling harder or uphill. Creaks are crazy-making issues. Basically, remove the bolts, grease the surfaces, reinstall. Repeat until isolated. However, I will say that you might not want things as tight as (you) can tighten them by hand. If you have a good bicycle mechanic nearby, you might pay for a half hour of their time (burrito and beer?) and have them show you how tight a properly torqued bolt should be. With greased threads (and threads are _always_ greased), it doesn't take everything you've got. It is very helpful to develop the feel, and that comes from practice. (And I will say that if you don't get the 'feel' thing, be honest and get a torque wrench with inch-pound increments.) Squeaks are notoriously hard to locate while riding. Having someone alongside listening can help. Now, specific to your complaint: If you were just sitting and coasting and creaking: Saddle itself (silicone spray at the metal/leather interfaces) Saddle to rail connection (bolt threads, thin grease on rails) Hubs, freehub/freewheel, wheels not properly seated in dropouts Since you can replicate it by torquing the bars, I'd pull and regrease the stem, then the bars. It could also be a cable housing tip. If it's happening with a pedal stroke, then I'd suspect in order - pedals, pedal/crank threads, crank/spindle interface, bottom bracket threads.
