[RBW] Re: RivReader asks if aluminum bars should be replaced after 5 years?

2013-03-19 Thread ColonelJLloyd
I agree that time is an irrelevant factor. Whether to use vintage aluminum

several vintage bars and have no plans to replace them.

I have a headset spacer mount for a bell. It's pretty straightforward. Not
much to say about it really. If you have spacers under your top nut this
just replaces 10mm of them. Mine is actually from Velo Orange as they offer
the mount in 1 or 1 1/8.

[RBW] Re: VO vs. Nitto handlebars...

2013-03-13 Thread ColonelJLloyd
What bars are you interested in specifically? I'm a fan of randonneur bend
bars and have vintage unmarked ones that are on the narrow side, but my
favorites are the VO Randonneur and the Nitto B132 and B135. The
differences in the bends are subtle and it comes down to personal
preference in the bend and the aesthetics. Nitto drop bars are sleeved
while the VOs are bulged at the clamp area. I do wish the reach on the VO
Randonneur was just slightly less.

The only cromoly bars I have are Nitto risers and a Nitto straight bar, but
if those bars had been available in aluminum I'd have chosen those. It's
possible for aluminum bars to fatigue and crack, I suppose, but unless they
are put through substantial abuse that's not a risk you really need to
consider. Nitto heat treats some of their larger bars just to mitigate the
risk further. Cost of production is another factor with cromoly equivalent
bars tending to be less expensive.

I have used the cromoly Albatross as well as the aluminum version and the
aluminum Soma Oxford. I see no reason for the extra strength of a steel bar
for such an upright configuration so I would let your budget determine
which to buy for that type of bar.

[RBW] FS: 700c Phil Wood/Wheelsmith DB/MAVIC MA2 Wheelset

2013-03-12 Thread ColonelJLloyd
I'm new to this list, but I have an impeccable selling reputation on both
eBay and bikeforums.net (same handle).

I have a super nice wheelset for your Rivendell that I need to part with in
order to finish up a few other projects that have been in limbo too long.
PayPal, money order or personal check accepted. The wheels are true and
round and free of dings or dents.

*$350* plus shipping.

   - 135/100 spacing
   - 32h Phil Wood hubs
   - MAVIC MA2 700c rims
   - *New* DNP 13-28t 8 speed freewheel (Hyperglide ramped cogs for optimal
shifting with in friction or index mode)
   - *New* DNP freewheel remover
   - *New* Velo Orange skewers
   - Wheelsmith double butted stainless spokes
   - Chromed brass nipples
   - Velox rim tape

The new Rivendell Jack Brown green labels and Schwalbe SV16 tubes are
*not*included, but if you'd like them I'll included them for an additional $75.

[RBW] Re: FS: 59cm Bleriot Frame/Fork/HS/BB/etc.

2013-03-11 Thread ColonelJLloyd
I'd like to see pics. I'm new to the list and I don't see how to send you
an email directly.

Update to this: upon further inspection, it appears the chainstays are
damaged from the use of a kickstand. That is, they have been flttened in a
bit where the kickstand sat agains them. And there is paint damage there
as well. I've dropped my price to $520, with shipping included. Please
send me an email off list if you want pictures or are interested.

For your consideration, one much loved 59cm Bleriot in typical condition
(photos available upon request). Includes a Campognolo headset, dirty
bottom bracket, and Dia-Compe centerpull brakes (if you want em - I
recommend em). Scratches / dings here and there, but otherwise every bit
the grand frame it's purported to be. I have moved on to less gears (one
 to be exact).

I hate to part with it, so in honor of the best tire size in the world,
I'll start at $650 plus actual shipping, probably $60-$75 in the contiguous
 US. Great bike.

Also have some Albatross bars and a Wald basket or two. Email me off
list if you want something like that.

 Cheers,

[RBW] Re: How do Silver Shifters work?

2013-03-08 Thread ColonelJLloyd
That's correct. I have trouble with my Simplex Retrofrictions slipping when
climbing. I assume this is due to a combination of a very strong rear
derailleur spring and frame flex.

Looks like a mini-ratchetting system. Like micro-indexing or something.

So I am guessing that when you shift gears, the ratchet mechanism holds
the derailer in place over the cog so you will not have the chain slip off
if it isn't a perfect shift, like what happens in pure friction shifting?

That would be a nice improvement over friction, as I have had the chain
drop to higher gear when standing. Ouch!!
