[RBW] Re: Will's weekly emails?

2024-04-29 Thread John A. Bennett
Apologies. We've been having issues with *Mail Chimp*, the service we use
to distribute *Will's Email Updates*.

In addition to sending them via The 'Chimp, they are also (immediately and
reliably) posted on our site

.

You can find them under the News heading at rivbike.com
.

You can also go to the Link Tree in our
Instagram profile, and find 'em that
way. There's also a heads-up
posted on IG that a new email has landed..

New emails arrive pretty much every Friday afternoon.

Onward!

John

*Gladys* was a great shop. *Golden Pliers* became the *Rivendell* dealer in
Portland, Ore. after Darby and I closed *Rivelo* in January of 2020.

Kevin & Becky and the whole GP crew are awesome.

Check 'em out!

Tilting the nose up prevents sliding forward when you're riding upright
bars.

It feels the same as an English equestrian saddle, once you get the hang of
it.

[RBW] Re: Clem Lotto

2021-10-07 Thread John A. Bennett
Good point, Johnny. We do that for our custom frames.

For the stock frames, the list "sells out," and people are disappointed
that they didn't know about the pre-sale.
It's not an issue with customs because each bike is made for the person
who is ordering it.

With stock frames, we order a specific number. That's usually as many as we
can
afford and the number that our frame builder feels they can safely promise,
based on supplies and their production calendar.

We'll try the lottery, and see how that goes.

[RBW] Re: Clem Lotto

2021-10-07 Thread John A. Bennett
As we have discovered, there's no perfect method these days.
Pre-selling is *still* based on a specific number of frames/bikes.
That's how we have to order them: "100 of _, please."

And when the pre-sale "sells out" and someone didn't know about
it, they're just as disappointed and frustrated as if they tried to click on
a link at High Noon along with everyone else who wanted __.

We're hopeful that the lottery will relieve some of the stress.
Is it perfect? No. What is? (Besides Jimi Hendrix's cover of
Bob Dylan's "All Along the Watchtower," that is.)

As we have said before, this is not how we'd like it to be. And no,
it's not an intentional - or unintentional - marketing scheme.

Sending emails and posting updates on Instagram about the
sale of ___ in days was our way of answering the concerns
of would-be buyers who said they didn't know about __ going on
sale, and *had they known*, they'd have

We don't want to tie our customers to their phones or laptops, so we
try and give as much of a "heads-up" as possible about the upcoming
availability of .

That way, customers can mark their calendars, forget about it, and go for
ride.
And hopefully, the lottery will help with that even more.

Thank you for your patience, and suggestions.

Re: [RBW] Clem L frames live 3et 8/12/21

2021-08-14 Thread John A. Bennett
I remember when we received the first batch of Quickbeams. The green ones.
They sold out pretty fast. Not in two minutes, but maybe in two weeks.
So we ordered another 100, and the second stack languished for a long time,
piled in the middle of what is now the showroom. They eventually sold.

The times, they are a-changin'.

No way of knowing if anyone is using a bot. I doubt it.
Like you say: Have your RBW account set up. Have your cart ready. Refresh
like crazy, starting a minute
before. And boom.

We definitely look forward to the day when we have enough bikes and frames
for everyone who wants
one. And we hope they sell out. But not in two minutes.

[RBW] Re: Wow! What's going on with Rivendell caps going for $$$

2020-11-18 Thread John A. Bennett
I remember that one. It came in as a surprise.
Grant said it was the ugliest cap he'd ever seen.
We didn't sell them. A few leaked out, I guess.

Used Rivendell caps normally don't sell for anywhere near this amount on
eBay.

Re: [RBW] Re: Weirdest Rivendell ideas?

2020-10-17 Thread John A. Bennett
*Saluki: 2005.* Mark built mine first to work out the assembly details.
It was the largest size we made (62cm). Still ride it daily.

When it became apparent that the design would work for larger frames, the
A. Homer Hilsen
came along in sizes larger than 62cm with 700c wheels.

It didn't take long for us to realize that having the same bike with
different names was
confusing (we had already done that with the Romulus & Redwood) so "Saluki"
was dropped,
and they all became Hilsens.

The Saluki decals and head badge were designed by Jon Grant in Austin,
Texas.
Later on, he created the Bleriot artamong other things.

[RBW] Re: Best saddle for very upright posture?

2020-10-13 Thread John A. Bennett
Before you rule out a Brooks B-67, Jesse, there's one thing to consider:
The springs are very stiff, and only provide the minimum of shock-absorbing
qualities.

What the springs *do* allow is a little sideways movement as you pedal,
dipping a little with each pedal stroke.
It's a great saddle for an upright position, giving your sit-bones the
perfect platform on which to perch.

[RBW] If You Need To Call Rivendell In The Next Few Days, Do This

2020-10-07 Thread John A. Bennett
We had to stop answering the phone for a few days.
Suffice it to say it has something to do with our BRP plan.

Email whomever you wish to speak with at Rivendell or
email i...@rivbike.com and give us your number.
We will call you back (insert caveats regarding COVID staffing levels, etc.)

Of course, if you're just calling to give us "an earful," that's OK.
No need to call. We've "heard it all before."

Thanks for your patience!

John, for everyone at RBW

I don't remember that, Joe. Not saying it didn't happen; I just don't have

He did give some advice to XtraCycle about head-tube angles early on, as I
recall. Don't quote me on that, though.

Interesting Rivendell-related footnote:

The Bleriot decals and head badge were originally designed for a take-apart
travel bike (along the lines of the Ritchey "break-away").

Never happened, and when the opportunity to make a frame in collaboration
with QBP came up, the Bleriot decals, etc. were appropriated for that.

[RBW] Meet Bruce, The Touring Guy on an Atlantis

2020-03-01 Thread John A. Bennett
Bruce bought an Atlantis from us at Rivelo (Portland, Ore.) last year with
the idea of retiring from his job and taking to the open road.

He started that tour yesterday, and sent the following dispatch. If you
want to live vicariously, follow along. Links below. If you want to let him
surf your sofa, follow along!

Onward, Bruce!

I’m underway-1 day of riding in the book. Below is the tracker etc I
mentioned. If you’re so inclined perhaps you could connect me with the
Rivelo and Rivendell fan base. Maybe I could occasionally poach a night on
a couch here and there.
Thanks.

I'm heading to Santa Cruz on Feb 28th and starting my ride on Leap Day.
Here are some ways to stay in touch:
Here's a link to a mapshare site tied to my satellite tracker:
share.garmin.com/E36U4
I'll be posting iphone photos, text and generally boring items on a Tumblr
site: https://atlantisontheedge.tumblr.com/
email: freemanbruc...@gmail.com
cell: 971-678-1430

I'll be expecting you to heckle me, encourage, ask questions, answer
questions and stay in touch. Thanks for everything and especially for
making the last couple of weeks so memorable, surreal and great.
If you're looking for an interesting vacation use the satellite tracker and
come find me out on the road. I'll be glad to let you carry a large portion
of my gear.

Bruce

[RBW] Re: Vaughn's custom for sale

2020-02-28 Thread John A. Bennett
Rivendell is honest about everything that they do, even when they flub up.

That leaves them open to criticism, but it beats the alternative by a mile.

Other companies screw up, too, but they're more likely to keep mum about
it, or spin it to cover a mistake:
"We just scored a batch of NOS widgets. Get 'em while they last!"

That's not to say that Rivendell is the only honest company out there, just
the one that I have the most first-hand experience with.

In the 12 years I worked at Rivendell, I never heard anyone lie to a
customer, was never encouraged to fib to save face, or to preserve the
company "rep."

Quite the contrary.

Sure, customers got steamed if we goofed, but they --and we-- slept better
knowing that we were above-board and honest.

As Grant wrote more than once, and I paraphrase, "This is not a secret
company; ask us anything and we will tell you."

Sounds good to me!

John in Portland, Ore.

[RBW] Re: Legolas, Bombadil, Saluki

2020-01-24 Thread John A. Bennett
Fantastic idea, Karl!

Buying second, third, or fourth hand is a great way to conserve funds, but
if we always *only* do that, well, eventuallyno more Rivendell, and no
more Rivendells.

In an early Rivendell catalog ---No. 4, I think -- the brown one, in any
case --- there was a great line, maybe a quote, that went (and I
paraphrase)

"Buy from the fine folks who told you about the merchandise is the first
place."

That's a very rough paraphrase/translation.but it still has meaning.

Ponder the alternative for a guaranteed bummer.

I've been riding Bosco bars on my daily commuter (2005 RBW 62cm Saluki) for
years, and I have had zero issues with them.

No slip, no dip.

They are* by far* my favorite bars OF ALL TIME, and believe me, I've ridden
them all. Well, all of the bars sold by Rivendell, that is.

Thanks, Isaac. We're diggin' *all* the pix you get.

which doesn't require focusing and produces very fine photos, too.

Speaking of photos, I need to get a better one of your contest poster on

[RBW] Re: Recommend a film camera

2019-08-16 Thread John A. Bennett
THE best camera is the Olympus OM-1n.

The "n" is the upgraded version of the original OM-1. Well worth seeking
out.

Great lenses available. Start with a 50mm (the one most people paired it
with). Then branch out to a wide (28mm) and save up for an 85mm (perfect
for portraits).

The camera is affordable, light, sharp, intuitive, carry-able, and super
reliable. I don't know* anyone* who has one that has ever had one bad thing
to say about them!

Great list. Brings back memories!

My 62cm Saluki was the first one assembled by RBW in 2005. Mark wanted to
build an in-house/staff bike before working on customer's orders, just to
get a feel for the new model. I happily volunteered. It is still my daily
commuter.

We have big stack of donated Readers at Rivelo that we loan out as part of
our shop library. When I went to RR 35 to check on the first Saluki
mention, as listed here in Mary's post, I noticed that the original owner
of this particular copy was none other thanMartin Gierke!

[RBW] Re: New bike woes - Albatross bars and Brooks B17 Special saddle

2019-04-22 Thread John A. Bennett
The Brooks B-67 is --for most anatomies -- a better choice than the B-17
when paired with upright bars.

Your pelvis rotates backward when you sit upright, and the B-67 (or the
unfortunately discontinued B-68) makes for a better "sit-bones platform."

Leather saddles are like leather shoes, though. They require a little
break-in time to mold to your body, but once they do, they're more
comfortable than anything else out there.

[RBW] Re: Another Riv Financial Situation Thread

2019-01-01 Thread John A. Bennett
I don't believe ANYONE posting on the Paceline forum regarding Rivendell
has any kind of real understanding about how much money it costs to run a
company like Rivendell.

What other bike COMPANY (yes, it's a company, NOT a shop) with only 10 or
11 multi-hat wearing employees produces as much of their own stuff? Bikes,
frames, components, clothing, lugs, bags, specialty racks, soap...C'mon,
the list is endless.

All of those items require multiple prototypes (which ---"surprise,
surprise'" --the makers-suppliers do not provide for free); new tooling;
materials; manufacturing; safety testing. All of that costs LOTS of
money.

And the Rivendell mark-up is MINIMAL to keep all of these cool items as
affordable as possible. Sure, they still "cost," but if they were marked up
the way Made in Bangladesh Name Brand Designer Duds were, well, they'd be
10 times as much. Maybe 20X!

Year round and especially during the holidays, I get tons of emails and
catalogs from companies pushing their merchandise at 50% off. Rivendell
can't afford to do that. They'd be losing money, big time.

How can other places sell their stuff at 50% off and still thrive? Yep,
they pay very little for their Made In Who Knows Where merchandise.

So, Grant asking people to consider buying a $20 gift certificate after a
slow month seems pretty harmless to me.

And the guy on the Paceline forum who thinks December is a big month for
the bike business has obviously never worked in the bicycle industry. It's
a terrible month.

People don't buy bikes as gifts, and most regular customers are busy
spending their disposable income on their friends and family and
kidsNOT on bikes and bike parts for themselves.

I remember when Rivendell used to have paid memberships. $15 a year. It was
a great way to make a small contribution in exchange for the tangible and
intangible things Rivendell did, and to be a part of it all.

These days, I'm seeing more and more blogs and sites charging to view their
content. Riv doesn't do that. It's free. Heck, I'd pay $15 a year ---or
more!--- JUST to read Grant's Blahg.

Happy New Year to everyone who digs Rivendell and keeps 'em going!

[RBW] "Pedal Bikes / Shoot Film" Poster Contest

2018-08-17 Thread John A. Bennett
Rivelo -- AKA Portland's independent Rivendell dealer -- is teaming up with
Stumptown Printers to create a limited edition poster, and we're having a
contest to choose the (black & white film) photo that will be used to make
it.

You don't need to live in Portland, and you don't have to attend the launch
party to collect the prize(s).

I will let the link do the rest of the talking. If you have any questions,
though, lemme know.

Thank you, Rich,

I developed the film at home, but scanned the negative to make a JPG.

Been taking a darkroom class at the local JC, but we're on a break, so no
printing again til next week.

Looking at old enlargers on Craigslist. Inch by inch.

Thanks, again.

[RBW] Two April Events In Portland, Oregon

2018-04-05 Thread John A. Bennett
*Rivelo, *Rivendell's Portland/OR/NW dealer, is hosting two events at the
shop in April. Both are on *Saturday*s.

*April 21 (1-4PM) : Randi Jo Fabrications Trunk Show. *Randi & Eric from
RJF will be "in the house" with lots of items for immediate sale. We're
also hoping to debut our 4th Rivelo / Randi Jo Limited Edition cap. This
one is fully lined waxed cotton. Half with ear flaps, half with an
adjustable back. We'll be serving Elk Claws from Elkton, Oregon...and
coffee.

*April 28 (12-4PM) Grant Petersen visit.* Hand-grip makin' demo. Informal Q
& A. If the timing works, we'll have the new RBW bike & frame catalog
available, too! Lite refreshments. Stop by Rivelo to enter a drawing to
join the Rivelo crew and Grant for dinner immediately afterward.

Details and regular updates on our Instagram
account: https://www.instagram.com/rivelo_pdx/

IF you live in these parts, it would be great to see you on *one or both*
of these Saturdays.

[RBW] Re: Riv request for store credits

2018-02-24 Thread John A. Bennett
Marc, you said a mouthful. *All* true for all small businesses.

If you spend too much on inventory, your cash flow suffers. If you spend
too little, your cash flow suffers.

Every product you develop costs 5 times as much as you thought it would
because you want to get it right,
and your customers expect you to.

Designs, samples, prototypes, materials: The cost of those are
astronomical, and only a small fraction of their expense can
be absorbed by the retail pricebecause otherwise the product won't sell
because it costs more than people want to spend.

And then you have another cash flow problem.

Huge companies can absorb those costs with big volume sales and almost zero
margins.

That said, I worked at Rivendell for 12 years, and Grant and Mary *never*
missed a payroll and I *never* went to the doctor
only to be told that my insurance had lapsed. As GM, I never got a call or
opened a letter from a supplier or bank asking where
their money was.

Rivendell is as good as it gets. Long may they wave!

[RBW] Re: Houseless Sam Hillborne in Portland, Oregon

2018-02-01 Thread John A. Bennett
I have exchanged emails with the Craigslist poster, and a guy who lives in
the neighborhood where this took place has spoken with him in person at his
place of business.

While I lack the proper tools to investigate/examine the inner workings of
his mind/heart/soul/whatever your reference point, he seems legit and
well-intentioned, and the person who spoke with him in person agrees.

The fact that the owner of the bike in question has not surfaced lends
credence to the tale, it seems. I know that if *my* bike was missing, I'd
be all over Craigslist, bike forums, email lists, etc. looking for it.

[RBW] Re: Crankypants & Thoughtful Responses

2018-01-06 Thread John A. Bennett
*Many thanks to Jim Edgar!*

As I believe I mentioned here once before: When this group was first
started by Rivendell, Grant and I tried to moderate it, but we fairly
quickly figured out that it was not only too time-consuming to do it well,
but that it was also putting us in the difficult position of playing
policemen with our customers. Not good.

We were ready to close it down when Jim stepped in and said that he'd like
to try his hand. We couldn't have asked for a better person to take it on.

He continues to steer the middle course, even when the waters get choppy.

Much appreciated, Jim.

Mine has the added feature that Giro calls MIPS. Costs an extra $20 or so:

[RBW] Re: Saluki.

2017-09-28 Thread John A. Bennett
Dear Dave,

I'm a little rusty of the Bleriot specs. It was a very limited offering,
done in conjunction with QBP, and yes, made in Taiwan.

Riv originally intended the decals/HB/name for another model, but when the
QBP thing came together, it was decided to use them for the Bleriot.

Jon Grant, who also did the Saluki artwork (and, coincidentally, Rivelo's
logo), designed the Bleriot decals and head badge.

All I can remember today

[RBW] Re: Saluki.

2017-09-28 Thread John A. Bennett
Salukis were originally available/built in sizes 47cm to 62cm, starting in
2005.

When Rivendell wanted to make a bike with similar geometry and qualities
(room for bigger tires and fenders, etc.), but in larger sizes, the A.
Homer Hilsen was born.

Because bikes bigger than 62cm with 650B wheels didn't seem like a good
idea, the A. Homer Hilsen was first offered as "the 700c version of the
Saluki."

When Rivendell realized that having two bikes that were, for all intents &
purposes, "the same," the Saluki name was retired, and all existing (and
future) frames became A. Homer Hilsens.

John, late of Rivendell, currently of Rivelo, and rider of 62cm Saluki

Re: [RBW] Re: Portland to SF?

2017-08-29 Thread John A. Bennett
Seventeen years ago, I was 6 months away from getting my Atlantis, and 2
months away from starting my job at Rivendell.

I made the coast trip on a (too small for me) Trek that I bought at
Goodwill for $24.99.

After I started at Riv, I gave it to my then RBW co-worker, Joe Bauder, who
--I think-- either still has it or only very recently got rid of it.

Thanks, Mark! Probably too far afield for this quick jaunt, but I
appreciate the offer. Next time!

[RBW] Bike Swapping? Manhattan (NYC) and Portland (OR)

2017-08-14 Thread John A. Bennett
Darby and I are going to be in* New York *from the 14th to 19th of
September (which is more like the 15th to the 18th).

We are looking to find bikes for a day to tool around Central Park, and the
Waterfront Greenway.

We're on a shoestring budget for this trip, so I thought I'd see if anyone
would be interested in a bike swap. (We won't have a car, so the bikes
would probably need to be somewhere *in* Manhattan.)

We ride your bikes (Rivendell or Riv-like) for a day in New York and then
you ride our bikes (Atlantis, Betty Foy, Saluki) for a day when you come to
Portland.

My PBH: 92.5 cm Darby: 80 cm

In any case, if it sounds interesting, let me know. Barring that, if you
live in New York and can recommend a good bike rental place, that would be
cool, too.

Thanks!
