Re: [RBW] Re: In praise of fixed mountain riding
Kevin Mulcahy--yup, 48x18 seems a bit stout, but it's different on a fixie ;-) The same gear on a multispeed bike does seem harder. Maybe it's because the fixie is so much lighter and maybe it's because of the rotational inertia caused by the direct linkage of the drive train that seems to help in climbing and forward progression generally. For some of the more technical tracks I've got my eye on for this winter and spring, I may drop down to a 44 on the front. Re: [RBW] Re: In praise of fixed mountain riding
I used to use spd pedals riding fixed but no longer do. Wide spikey pedals—race face “Chesters” or the very similar VP pedals. I run a 48x18 or 48x21 gear and, though I sometimes get to walk a steep section up, I always manage to keep my pedals while descending. But once a year, I pull myself together, square off with a brute and conquer it. So yesterday, I did my now annual (two years in a row) ride up to Smugglers Notch. I took the Rambouillet but wasn’t sure it’s low double gearing (30/28) would be enough, but it was. When I got the Ram, (Sept of 2004 or 5) my first ride was an 80 mile trip to the top of the Appalachian Gap, a beast of a climb with a fair stretch of 22% grade at the top. I wanted to celebrate this year with the Ram, again. This climb goes up about 1700 feet in about 4 miles. The first mile climbs 400 feet, then there's a couple of miles of 1-2% grade before the last three miles, which gain about 1100 feet. I always stop at the entrance to Smugglers Notch Ski resort, which is just before the last three mile push, for a brief rest water and then I stop again about 1 1/2 mile later where it briefly flattens out. Take on air and water. But this time I had to stop about a half mile or so before the top to catch my breath, lower my heart rate, and rest my legs. I wondered if a 24/27 wouldn't have required that stop. That’s just before the final 12% up to the top. About this time I forgot two very important things. Why the hell I was doing this and which of the dam turns was the last one before the top. But I made it. Shouldn't have done this on a Sunday, too much traffic, but life has been very busy. Took it easy on the way down, just sat up and coasted at 40 or so. I feel pretty good now on Monday morning. Re: [RBW] Re: Atlantis as touring bike: best choice?
I have an Atlantis and have used it for all manner of riding (except attempts at land speed records ;-) ) but I've not yet done a true loaded tour. I have loaded the bike down quite considerably and hauled stuff around. I can say without equivocation that the Atlantis offers a far more comfortable and secure ride than my old trek 720 of the early 1980s ever did. Also, though I've not ridden an LHT, I met a fellow who did own an LHT and offered him a test-ride of the Atlantis and he felt there was no comparison--he much preferred the feel of the Atlantis. I've not ridden any of the Bruce Gordon bikes, but I had been very tempted by them in the past. Of course, a big plus, for me, with the Atlantis is the fact that it is just a lovely, lovely bicycle capable of going anywhere a rider might care to venture. So, I'd wait for the Atlantis. . . Re: [RBW] Re: Losing Bike weight vs. Rider weight. Which one more effectively makes you go faster?
Michael, I must come down on the side of decreasing rider weight whenever possible, provided one is keeping within healthy parameters. If one loses weight through exercise proper diet, then one should also be stronger and fitter for it and this will further improve performance on the bike. I think, at one point, Jan Heine published an article in Bicycle Quarterly looking at whether or not modern racing bikes, with all the tech advancements, were actually faster than the bikes of the past. If I recall correctly, he found that bike had not gotten faster in the last half-century or so. . . Re: [RBW] Re: Atlantis as touring bike: best choice?
That's very true about the choice of tires! I had armored tires on the Atlantis when I lived in Chinle, Arizona and they felt every bit of armored when riding on pavement (but they did a stunning job of preventing punctures from goat-heads!). I feel that I mitigated the on-pavement effects of the heavy, stiff tires by running at quite low pressures. I've just acquired a set of 38c Barlow Pass tires and will be test riding those in the next couple of days. Not as marvelous when unloaded as, say, a std diam 8/5/8 frame, in my book. Of course, a big plus, for me, with the Atlantis is the fact that it is just a lovely, lovely bicycle capable of going anywhere a rider might care to venture. It is that. Note, however, a poor choice of tires can suck all the goodess out of an Atlantis. First one I ever saw in real life, at a rest stop on a ride, the owner had just put on some kind of ride forever over acres of broken glass and barb wire armored tires and he said he was so sorry it made him hate the bicycle and regret having ever bought it. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Re: [RBW] Rivs on the Great Divide, was Jamboree
Anne, I will second what D. Patrick wrote regarding the washboard riding technique. My Atlantis I have spent considerable time on the washboards in Colorado Arizona as well as on the cobblestones in Tacoma, Washington. I will say that I find it much easier to find a good riding rhythm on the washboard than I do on the cobbles. As I others have also noted, reducing tire pressure appropriately goes a long way to smoothing the road out. As one more data point, when I was out there riding those trails, I was on Schwalbe Marathon XRs, I think 45-ish wide tires. When I do ride the Divide route, I'll probably use a nice, wide cyclocross tire with a low-profile tread in the center and knobbies on the edges since one of the biggest problems for me was maintaining traction control when riding in deep-ish ruts in soft-ish sand... On Friday, 2 August 2013, Anne Paulson wrote: From what I hear, in the New Mexico portions of the trail, washboarding can't be avoided by picking a good line. Re: [RBW] Rivs on the Great Divide, was Jamboree
Anne, I've been contemplating riding the Great Divide for a couple of years now--time has been the big issue--but I will certainly ride either my Atlantis or my Rawland Drakkar (set up very much like the Atlantis, but fixed gear) when I do. I've extensively ridden both bikes over washboards and singletrack in Arizona, Colorado and, to a lesser extent, Maine. With high volume tires at fairly low pressure the Atlantis handles as well as anything else I could imagine on such terrain. Go for it! Re: [RBW] Dry bag packing atop Nitto Rack
Hi Andrew, I use dry bags quite often and like them a lot--they're typically quite sturdy. Re: [RBW] A Mini-State O' The List Report - Topic Drift and a Note on Tone
Nicely stated, and thanks for all the work you do! Cheers! lyle On 17 April 2013 02:08, Cyclofiend Jim cyclofi...@earthlink.net wrote: As we make our way out of the winter, I know every one is getting excited about spring riding. Even in the parts of the world where they have real winters, things are looking good. Over the past few weeks, mostly related to enthusiasm for riding, there seems to have been a steady increase in the amount of topics not related to the focus of this group. It's not to the point where it's a problem, but given the size of this bunch and the tendency towards entropy, I thought it might be a good moment to articulate it. This group has continued to grow steadily. We're now north of 2,300 membersand last month there were in excess of 2,000 posts. As I've written before, 1,000 members was a big milestone, and more than twice that is a bit mind-boggling. So, I have to start by thanking everyone who has continued to make this a positive and interesting discussion. I especially thank those who have been regular in sharing, answering and hanging out here since we threw the doors open. One of the basic underpinnings of this group is to define ourselves by what we are, rather than what we are not. As an example, I don't think that Rivendell has ever said they are anti-racing. Rather, they emphasize the things they enjoy - riding bicycles where ever they can under any conditions, camping under the stars, being comfortable - in short, just enjoying the ride. That way, you don't have to have an argument about racing vs. comfort. You can have a discussion about what is great about either. And to say it very plainly, this list is about discussion. I've mentioned before one of the ways I think about this list - as a public house where ideas are easily shared between those who have arrived, everyone is present because they want to be, and passing through the doors means that baggage is left outside. It takes the agreement of all to make that work. The wonderful thing is that by and large, that continues to be the case. The quality of discussions remain high. The slight downside is that because of the level of discourse, it periodically gets distracted. That's a very natural condition - after all, when you are with folks who have good ideas and thoughts, who manage to state them clearly and in ways that are optimistic and well-thought-through, you want to seek their opinions on other topics as well. The caution flag I'd like to raise is that the very narrowness of this list is what gives rise to that high quality. It's important to remember that if you are tagging your post OT or Off Topic, then it doesn't belong on this list. General questions are best posted to more general lists. Just by staying on topic, we're going to generate a fair amount of traffic. One of the hallmarks of this list has been a very high signal to noise ratio. It's solid information from the people using and thinking about the items. And we've gotten to know one another pretty well, generated real, live get-togethers among the members. As the photos from recent regional rides, there's a lot to cover just within the stated topic of this group. All good stuff. No... GREAT stuff. Take a new friend riding this month, and make sure they finish with a big smile. Tone is a critical issue. My view is simple: life is too short. If you can't stay positive or at least polite, it's time to put down the keyboard and take a break. We all get enough guff in our everyday existence that we don't need to add to it here. As I've said before, disagreement is expected. There's no way we will all come to the same conclusion about anything, and I think it would be a more boring world if we did. But, here, under this roof, we agree to disagree with respect for one another. To finish, I'll repeat what I said in the last full-length SOTLR (wow, was it really 2010?) - it is important as we grow to honor the relatively narrow focus of this group, even though it's tempting to have more general topics discussed here. Clearly, it's a bit of an imperfect border, but one which we've largely maintained. Letting discussions end as they creep toward more general topics, not having to have the last comment (or needing to win the argument) and, above all, maintaining the respect for one another within the group is what makes this list special. As always, thanks again for contributing to or simply enjoying the discussions. - Jim Jim Edgar / Cyclofiend.com / List Admin -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Re: [RBW] Re: FS 64 cm Atlantis - custom blue
Hi Drew! That is a sweet looking Atlantis! I'm going to second Tony's recommendation to try a set of fat knobby-type tires before parting with that bike. I've extensively used my Atlantis with Schwalbe Marathon XRs (700x40) on the trails and primitive roads on the Navajo Rez in the four corners area of Arizona and the riding is very similar to the trails in the Front Range area. The Atlantis is a great off-road bike with the right tires. Oh, and with the 700x40 XRs, there still miles of space, so easy enough to go much fatter. Good Luck! lyle On 5 April 2013 12:01, Tonester tony.mad...@gmail.com wrote: Hey there! Looks like the Ogre will handle up to a 2.5 tire , and I've seen Atlantii with 50mm slicks which is nearly 2. I'd whip a set of knobbies on the Atlantis and give it a go before giving it up. Re: [RBW] Get a Betty Foy, old man
You know, the findings in that study are interesting (though I concede I've not read the actual study yet). Living in the state with the oldest population, I treat a lot of older cyclists. Many of the men have a variety of hip and/or balance issues which make mounting/dismounting their bikes difficult and a touch risky. I've suggested a step-through frame to several of them and am consistently met with I am not going to ride a girl's bike! Ah well. . . I can say that, after having ridden my wife's Betty, I want one just 'cause they're delightful bikes. Manny, I can't really offer any advice beyond that which has been offered by others already, but I will take this opportunity to further compliment you on your photography--I always enjoy the photos you post. A few points if you start selling photos: - You'll need to get permission from people. For example, the Merry Sales catalog cover shows a person who is recognizable, and I think a Model Release would be required. - You may need permission from parks or private areas. - Certain events may require permission (e.g., races). The above starts to get all legal, but when you move into commercial work the personal-use exemption does not apply. One [simple] thing to protect your photos from appearing in print without your permission is to limit the upload size of the image to Flickr. Re: [RBW] First commute on fixed SO
David, Congratulations on your foray into fixed gear riding! As Patrick mentioned, climbing is fun on a fixed gear--I don't know why, but it really is--but I must say I don't mind the downhills. I've had some pretty ferocious spins going in the past but, if I try to actually keep up with the pedal speed, I find it fairly easy to do. Sort of a relaxed, high-speed spin with minimal resistance. Give yourself time to acclimate and you may be very pleased with the fixed gear experience. Oh, as a data point, I'm 52 and started riding fixed in my early 40s; I typically have the bike geared at 48x18 to 48x20. Cheers! lyle On 11 March 2013 12:48, PATRICK MOORE bertin...@gmail.com wrote: David: Welcome to the fixed gear club. You do know, do you not, that there is now no turning back? No, none at all. Downhills are the biggest bane of fixed gear riding. Uphills are fine once you develop your high torque muscles and, even more important, your mental outlook: you learn to pace yourself. Heck, hills are even fun -- I love climbing long, moderately graded hills. You learn to stand for extended periods without going anaerobic, and you learn when your knees prefer you to stand. But for downhills I've learned that the trick is, not to let your speed build up. I started with a small gear: 63 or so, IIRC, and quickly found that flailing along on the flats was annoying. I gradually upped my ratio until now I prefer something in the mid 60s to the mid 70s depending on total bike weight. I've even thought of gearing my gofast from 46/15 (24.5 650C X 22mm wheels) to 48X15. In all seriousness, give it sufficient time. I personally love riding fixed more than any other kind of riding -- tho' I must say that, yesterday, I did appreciate the 31 gear on the Fargo when schlepping 30 lb of groceries up a very steep hill against a headwind. Re: [RBW] A bike to grow old with?
Greetings Mark! I'll second Jim W's recommendation of the Atlantis. I have one and can't imagine I'll ever part with it. In fact, when I was in the selection process leading up to the Atlantis, my primary criterion was the only bike I'll ever need. That said, I really enjoy riding my wife's (too small for me) Betty Foy. It's a delightful bike and, with the step-through frame, it (and the more manly Yves Gomez) would make an excellent bike for the later years. Good Luck! lyle On 15 February 2013 16:14, James Warren jimcwar...@earthlink.net wrote: The decision needs to take into account how much loaded touring or offroad riding you would like to do on the bike. If you're not sure and want a bike that can do anything, get the Atlantis if the $2300 price for Frame/Fork isn't too steep. That bike in your size should have 1 top tube. The Hillborne would be a slightly more economical form of the something similar, a bit less tire clearance, extra TT that you don't want, frame designed around fewer sizes so maybe not as glove-like in fit, but $1000 less. I myself was not a double top-tube fan, but now that I've been riding a bike with one, it seems totally normal. -Jim W. A custom lightish 650b which could take some weight, running a 1x9 drivetrain with the option to go single speed, single color with limited decals for leaving locked up outsidekind of a high end PolyValent...OR maybe a 650b quickbeam with 132.5 spacing running 42/32 upfront and a the option to run a 6spd freewheel which could be manually shifted across multiple gears. By then it is 8:30-9pm and everyone is exhausted and just wants to relax. I do often get out on the bike and do an hour before coming home to shower and hit they hay but I have to make myself get out there alot of the time. Once I do though it is always a good decision as I feel better for having done it, and really enjoy myself to be sure. Not to get too meta here but the problem for alot of us is we are in a society that demands we work 50 hours a week and keep up a working family unit AND look great all the time and just something has to give. Newsweek had a great article last week pertaining to how this modern schedule is affecting women but touched on that no-one can lead a happy life at those levels. It is just sad to see a society that villifies people who are out of shape or frazzled so bad from just the daily grind that at the end of the day all they want to do is watch tv and eat some chips or ice cream. It is alot easier to just tell people to live healthier lives and get in shape, it is harder to understand the underlying causes of what makes people have to live unhealthy lives in the first place. Years of bad living often mean the damage is already done and some might only be able to slow the deterioration down making it difficult to return to a healthy body fat percentage and overall health. All the more reason to get on it as soon as possible. It is a well know fact that a very low percentage of the truly obese are not often successful in their efforts to lose fat. It is a real problem for some and not often understood by the average slightly chubby person. The subject and the people are more often laughed about, (I witnessed that yesterday at work) or dismissed as being lazy or otherwise flawed but that's another story we need to get back to the basics and those who are really struggling with weight need a multi-dimensional solution. be active. have sex. sleep. volunteer. pet a dog. learn something new. unplug the computer/TV and go outside. that seems like a better prescription for weight loss than any diet. There's a distinct feeling that comes with wellness - things get easy because being physically and mentally well feels really, really good. the body naturally craves this feeling and eating well and being active is our natural default setting - I live that lifestyle not because i'm on a specific diet and exercise regimen, but simply because it makes me feel good, day in and day out. it give me energy to do the things I like doing. it naturally relieves stress. it promotes rest and sleep. there's no choice or calculus about whether to eat this or that, or whether i should do cardio - the only choice is whether i want to feel good or feel like crap. culturally, we're getting pretty far removed from our natural wellness default. obesity, depression, anxiety ... that stuff goes hand-in-hand. life gets out of control, weight gets out of control, and we eventually start to lose our minds and feel like crap all the time. to feel good again, people over compensate with the things that should make us feel good - over eating is a prime example. Re: [RBW] That Diet and Exercise thing again!
Michael, In the past I've specifically trained for specific atheletic endeavors such as technical rock and ice climbing, marathon running, and olympic-style weightlifting. In those days, training occurred at a high intensity, often for hours on end, daily. In technical climbing and the sport of weightlifting, technique is supremely important, so a fairly high volume of training was required (in olympic-style weightlifting, there were a few years of 3 workouts/day, 5 days/week with no single session lasting more than an hour). Marathon training was done at fairly high volume, too, but more for psychological hardening than for cardiorespiratory or musculoskeletal development. Training like this, though, is not about being healthy--it's about sports performance. For health and general conditioning these days, I naturally cleave to something similar to Sisson's prescription. Mostly, I play for fitness. I still use principles of olympic-style weightlifting in my strengthening (I think the snatch and the clean jerk are fun lifts and are very applicable across a wide variety of athletic applications), I ride a fixed gear for my cardiovascular development because this naturally entails interval training, I probably rest between workouts more than I should :) and I rarely, if ever, do the same exercises twice in any given week. With respect to things like body fat percentages and the like, I recall a study (I don't have the article in front of me at the moment) which looked at 5 body fat of elite level male and female sprinters, middle-distance runners, and marathoners. Marathon runners (male) had % body fat around 11-13%, sprinters around 4% and middle distance runners were in the 6-10% range. The numbers for females were similarly distributed. If anyone would like the citation for the study, let me know and I'll dig that out when I get home. . . I hope this helps. . . I believe I am in the real majority, even if it doesn't feel like it at family gatherings! Actually I was more intrigued by Sisson's specific exercise recommendations and how they translate for people on this list. He suggests: 1. Doing lots of low intensity activity 2. Doing hi cardio for only 10-30 minutes a week. He refers to this as sprinting. 3. Lift heavy things, mostly your own body, for only 10-20 minutes twice a week. 4. Get lots of sunshine and sleep. These make a lot of sense to me, although when I was younger ( and apparently had a higher testosterone level) I felt the desire to go harder or longer more often. I haven't found anything in his writing on stretching, which I think is essential. As I age I feel more and more need for a regular yoga routine to keep my body functioning. These suggestions do seem to dovetail with GPs but I suspect many of us don't practice them consistently. Personally, except when I'm on the tandem, I have a hard time cycling at a moderate pace, or perhaps I should say moderate level of exertion and I find most club rides now require higher levels of output for 3-4 hours than these guidelines would support. I for one have never been able to sustain any weight training program - way too boring - but a 20 minute routine sounds more sustainable than an hour on weight machines at the gym. I also have a broader philosophical question about exercise programs, but will put that off to a separate post some time. If anyone would like the citation for the study, let me know and I'll dig that out when I get home. . . I hope this helps. . . Re: [RBW] That Diet and Exercise thing again!
I learned about Mark Sisson through Grant's writings. After looking into it, it appeared to be a refinement of what I do nutritionally anyway (I don't forego carbs to the extent that Sisson does--can't give up baking my own bread!). I find that the closer I adhere to Sisson's points, the more even my energy feels throughout the day, the week, or just the ride. I also do intermittent fasting, but not as a formal part of a plan--there're just those days when I feel like not eating and so I indulge that. Overall, through the years of being very active (former climbing and backcountry skiing guide, long-distance running cycling, etc.) I find that fats are absolutely essential to my energy level and my ability to be as active as I am. . . My wife recently began adhering closely to Sisson's approach--she has many food allergies and gluten intolerance--and noted very good results. I've been bumping around the interwebs since dial-up days, and have seen only a few topics turn truly, utterly and mind-numbingly ugly on a uniformly consistent basis. Helmets is one of those. I've never seen it end well. I've watched good folks who I knew and respected, other folks who seemed to fly in for the fight, and a whole lot of howling and sniping and cut-quoting. My personal view is that helmets is a topic where everyone starts out with the best intentions, but it devolves and becomes a harsher and more strident environment. Which is one of the things I'd hoped to avoid in this list. And just to say it clearly and loudly, we by and large have done so - avoided it, I mean. Thanks everyone who kept their head cool and presented facts, tried to keep a lid on a relentlessly explosive topic, or wisely took it off-list. Thanks for no name callin', and no oh yeah, so's yer old man! positions being taken. I don't think any other group could have pulled it off so well. I'm just asking that we let it sit now (ok, I've actually locked the topic, so, it's a pretty strong ask) and take a couple steps back and not pick it up again. Because, it's an every-steepening slope with increasingly slicker sides. As for that new way I mentioned above. I have no idea what it is - whether we have the ability to have the discussion without a lot of other things operating. Some of those things are well and fine, and others may be not even recognized impulses and reactiions. The only thing I can think to use as an analogy is when you are out in a boat and suddenly the fog creeps in tight. You can see the water but as soon as you lift your vision up, landmarks are gone, perspective is skewed and it becomes a sudden, strange world. The best thing to do is first recognize that you are in the situation. Then figure out the best way to calmly and safely withdraw. There are probably some places to discuss the topic, to make the case or prove the point. But, my suggestion is that we not do so in this group. Re: [RBW] First commute -- Mystery Bike!
54+? Holy Moly, that's about 9cm longer than on my Atlantis! I bet that's a cushy ride. . . once again, gorgeous bike! Enjoy! lyle On 25 September 2012 16:06, Allingham II, Thomas J thomas.alling...@skadden.com wrote: ** Thanks! Just measured the chainstays -- they're even longer than I would have guessed, effectively 54+ cm, with rear wheel all the way back in the horizontal drops. Hence, I'm guessing, the extremely cushy ride. But surprisingly (or maybe not, given the tentacular diagastays), it handles weight way back on the rack (which I could barely mount -- the struts are maxed out) beautifully. No swaying at all (I haven't loaded it really heavily yet, so I guess the jury's out, but it feels really sturdy back there). And it is definitely not sluggish in turns -- goes where you point it, when you point it. So, bottom line seems to be that you get the benefits that conventional wisdom says you'd get from the long chainstays, without (at least based on my experience) the downsides. -- *From:* rbw-owners-bunch@googlegroups.com [mailto: rbw-owners-bunch@googlegroups.com] *On Behalf Of *Lyle Bogart *Sent:* Tuesday, September 25, 2012 3:42 PM *To:* rbw-owners-bunch@googlegroups.com *Subject:* Re: [RBW] First commute -- Mystery Bike! Re: [RBW] Re: Rain Gear?
That's a good question, Michael! I don't have numeric temperature feedback to give but: when I was living in Tacoma, Washington I would wear the jacket while riding during heavy downpours in the summer and, of course, all winter long. Out here in mid-coast Maine, I can't really wear any jacket in the middle of summer and still ride vigorously; it's just too humid for that. That said, I feel that the JG jackets vent very well. Re: [RBW] Re: Bent Fork! Ack !!!
Amit, At worst, it looks as if *maybe* the fork was not squared up when it the steerer tube was fixed to the crown, so I'd imagine that the structural integrity should be fine. If it handles well, I wouldn't worry about it. With the change in rake/trail, it'd be a better front-load carrier than it otherwise would be ;-) For what it's worth, and this is a very different situation, I had a trek 520 back in the early 80s. I bent the forks in an accident in which I broadsided a car that had pulled out in front of me. I fixed it by repeatedly swinging the whole bike and striking the rearward side of the front tire against a curb until the front wheel was 'bout where I wanted it to be. It handled just fine and I put many, many more miles on it. . . the beauty of steel! So I decided to mount the mirror on the brake lever body. The only problem was I didn’t get a good view except of my hand and my left hip, which wasn’t very interesting to look at after a while. So I chopped the mirror, leaving the stalk and the ball and socket, and gave it a longer stalk, made of fine Canadian aluminum. By cutting the fine Canadian aluminum just right you can choose the angle it sticks out at. I suggest a rakish angle. I have been riding it for several weeks on roads and trails and it doesn't budge. If you look at how I drilled the holes, the zip ties hold it in tension against the flat part of the brake. Since the purchase I have swapped out stems to a 100 Nitto Technimic, added a Paul Neo-retro/Touring brake combo, splurged on the Tektro TRP brake levers, rerouted my brake and derailleur cables, and finally last night added yellow Newbaums cloth tape and twine to the Noodles. All that is left to do is get some amber shellac on the bars, and I am ready to ride!
