I see I'm a little late here, again as usual.

I would like to see a new version of the Wooly Warm pants. They would

out prematurely, perhaps a little lower rise. Black is still good in
my book.

I searched the forum and tried to find if there was a product wishlist

[RBW] Re: Mixing Components

2009-06-30 Thread Phil B

zrainryder -

I'd suggest changing out the cranks. Campy front shifter/derailers
don't care what crank you are using. Once you start changing out
stuff in the back it opens a can of worms which (for me) is solved
eventually with spending too much money.

On another note you may want to ride it as is for a while. Although
I'm not familiar with that particular model, Serotta's are generally
responsive machines and depending on the terrain and your condition
you could eck by with that 34T/28t combo.

I had swapped out the cranks on my Campy equipped Merlin, geared 12-23
in the rear, with a compact compact of 46/30 using a Sugino triple.
Recently I returned to the 50/34 Campy, since I'm pretty sure I will
be selling it, and found most of my routes to be doable. That bike
won't be seeing any racks or bags of any size and it could use a
couple more teeth in the rear, but as is it's fine. Bigger gears rely
on technique as much as strength.

Let us know how it works out.

[RBW] Re: Glove Recommendations?

2009-05-26 Thread Phil B

Eric, et. al.

There's another consideration for me when choosing gloves: how they
smell after days of riding.

The Spenco crochet back and the Riv summer gloves both have passed
that test for me. They also provide ample padding - almost to much
padding for use with mountain grips or other large diameter bars due
to padding. The thought of touring ala moustache bars makes me
shudder, but these two would be my first choices given that bar.

If anybody has recommendations for gloves that have a thickly padded

The Nigel Smyth bags are very well constructed and detailed. Baggins
really can't compare, even the canvas is better quality. I'm not

The Smyth bags (I've had a couple Little Loafers) are lined, and outer

I've got four or five years experience with RTs and have never seen a

And a set of Maxy Fasties.

I wouldn't ride on a tire that looks like that either. I wonder if a

FWIW.  I ride a 64cm Atlantis, with a 5-10 lbs saddle bag, drop bars
about 1 above the saddle but using 700x37 Panaracers.  I do not
experience (perceive?) a push to the outside of the turn on this bike.

I also ride a 64cm Rambouillet using 700x32 Panaracers that does feel
more responsive with a lighter touch to the bars in the corners.

I have ridden bikes that didn't want to hold a line, they felt like
they want to go straight all the time.

to hold a line in a turn.  It feels like the bike is pushing me to the
outside of the turn, and I have to wrestle with it to keep the turn
tight.  On my Ramboulliet, the turns are seemingly effortless, and the
bike simply goes where I want it to go with a very light touch on the
handlebars.   I don't know if it's possible to duplicate this effect
on the Atlantis; the geometries are different in many ways, but I'd
  like to try.

I'm running 33mm Jack Brown tires, and I have a Hoss saddlebag on the
back with between 5 and 10 pounds in it most days.  I use drop bars
roughly level with the saddle.  I don't know if dropping the weight
lower into panniers would help, or if I need more weight in the front
end, or if I should try different (narrower?) tires.  It could very
well be my riding technique!  Lot of things to try, but I thought I'd
pick the collective brain before I start throwing money around.

  Any suggestions?

[RBW] Re: looking for a fast bike, where should I go.

2009-04-20 Thread Phil B

Has anyone else had this difficulty of not being able to get the bars
 low enough?

I've had to trim the bottom of my technomic (?) stem quills to get
there. But my headtubes, due to frame size are only 110mm at best.

I guess I could go for a normal length quill next time.

2009-04-19 Thread Phil B

Hey Brewster -

Thanks for the Gary Helfrich's words on Ti. And yes affordability is
good on the used stuff.

 Urban
 Mythology
surrounding bikes made from radioactive Russian titanium.  Most of the
recovered material became golf driver heads.

I agree with Jim that if you are looking for a used bicycle or frame,
titanium is the bargain! I've seen Serotta Legends, Litespeed Vortex,
Merlin Extralights and others including the newer Lemond ti frames
sell for anywhere from $500-1000 for frameset (usually with a carbon
fork and headset). A great deal.

The problem titanium has is its trying to compete with carbon on
weight and well, let's face it, if weight is the main/only factor
you're looking at, and most rec riders do, then carbon is the winner.
Don't be afraid to look at a used ti frame, there are great deals out
 there. Brewster

The Soma Speedster Road Sport is built from good Tange Prestige
tubing. It's also got a smallish diameter downtube. I'll bet it
responds well.

Yes the Ram is fastish, but I have it set up for touring with 36 spoke
wheels and a wide cassette. I recently rode a friends Bianchi C2C and
enjoyed it, apart from having my hands so low. It felt a lot different
from the bikes I have and I saw an excuse for a project.

The difference in touring weight wheels and all around lightly but
smartly built wheels can make a difference in ride. Climbing,
acceleration, all around responciveness is improved. I think this and
good frame design, rather than minute speed-in-the-lab improvements
per gram of weight, makes for what most of us look for in a better
(faster?) ride. Losing a few pounds of our own body fat helps, too.

Having said that, I've got one (out of 4) bikes that consistently
shaves time off my usual routes. It's got Roly Polly rubber and a
Brooks saddle but that just about ends the Riv influence other than
possibly riding position and comfort. I don't even want to go there
with this post - but, well, ...it's titanium. Sorry. I know that
crosses the line for a lot of readers-of riv. But with the advent of
carbon a lot of the racy set are abandoning their old metal bikes, and
I couldn't resist. What I think though is the designer, Tom Kellog,
could do a great job with any material. He just knows the ti, that's
all.

I'd agree with others who mentioned the vintage stage race bikes.
Those with 27 original design wheels would more than likely allow for
larger tires given the use of long reach brakes.

Good luck and have fun. I'm off for a ride on one of my 'slow' bikes.

The Rambouillet was built by Toyo and the Quickbeam by Panasonic.
They have different lug-sets but also undoubtably different tube-

I'd be really surprised if they started life as frames of the same

I think that's why the similarity in built up weight.

[RBW] Re: Slightly OT: Any LBSes have White Ind. Pedals yet?

Joel, et.al.-

I've seen a pair in person - at White Industries - I was there showing
them a strange symptom one of my older ENO hubs was diplaying (as it
turned out it just needed new cartridge bearings). There were two
bikes, that had shown some use, in the lobby adorned with WI stuff and
the road bike had their new pedlals. Bee-uttiful stuff they make.
There were also derailers, canti-brakes, cranks, hubs and all.

They're quite nice down home folks. The shop is in Petaluma, and
looks to employ 8 to 10 people. Sorry no pictures or other tidbits, I
was too much in awe visiting Mecca.

Nice looking bikes on your Flickr page John!

[RBW] Re: Question for campy only please!

2009-04-09 Thread Phil B

Hi Rene -

I ran my shimano 7 speed hub with a re-spaced cassette using my 9
speed Campy brifters. No shiftmate necessary.

I think your 8 speed setup could work just as well. The Campy spacing
is 3.0mm for 9 speed. Just unassemble your cassette and replace the
spacers. I got mine from Loose Screws - they are the same diameter as
a standard Shimano bottom bracket spacer. I used a combination of
smaller widths since a 3.0mm wasn't offered.

wrap, and yeah, I agree the OP should try the two layers of cork first
before shellacking.

One other consideration is how much padding your gloves may have, if

[RBW] Re: Saluki and Big Wood Hetre

2009-03-10 Thread Phil B

Gino -

I don't have a bike set up at present to take the Hetres, but do run
the Cypres Green on my fendered winter fixed gear. I didn't have such
great luck with the first set of Cypres I had. A number of flats
deflated my confidence in them. I did remember the quality of the ride
though, and purchased another set into which I immediatley installed
the flat-away strips from Panaracer. I've got about 1000 miles on
them now without any flats. I couldn't tell if the second batch was
any different from the first, which was the original batch to hit the
states.

So if it's true the Hetre was built beefier than the Cypres I'd worry
less about flatting. Happy trails.
